I met Jyll years ago via Minka and it was a moment I will always remember! From the moment I heard her voice, I was drawn in. She led a yoga class at a Minka event. I then tracked her down in Crown Heights, where I live and have since tried a lot of different classes. Each one has impact- unexpected, more than you think kind of impact. At first I was all about the power class, I tried yoga in the park, breath and beats, and have attended a variety of in person special events. At the moment I'm a regular at Soul Sunday and if I don't attend, my week just feels different. You enter through the red door, go up the stairs, and a gold door greets you. Above the gold door, there is a chalk sign saying: "Heart Forward, Ass Back." Jyll (the owner) could not have chosen a better slogan for the energy in this studio. I have been going here for over 2 years. I've tried just about all of the different types of classes but my favorites are the restorative classes: Super Soul Sunday & Urban Unwind. I could go on about how therapeutic the space is (music, lights, merch offerings, overall ambiance, etc. ) but the biggest thing is that I have learned how to listen to + heal my body and gained an inclusive community at Urban Asanas. I love that the space is black owned and community minded -- there are pay what you can classes and even the drop in rate is one of the most reasonable I've found in the city. I started taking Urban Asanas Zoom classes about 10 months ago and Jyll's teaching has been a mental and physical boon during the pandemic. I've met a few yoga instructors with the ability to look at a student and seemingly transport themselves into the student's body, but I've never met one who can do this over an iPad like Jyll can. Physically, she will help you build up to challenging poses while providing the adjustments you need to do so safely. Her classes will make you stronger, more flexible, and more aware of your body, without the pressure to attempt poses that don't work for you. As a Day 1 beginner, Jyll perfectly fuses Black Auntie sass with a soulful musical selection, as she eases you into sometimes challenging holds. Starting off with her Soul Sunday class was the best decision because I was afraid of walking into yoga class and everyone is doing the upside down pretzel, while levitating. Hard pass. I know my body and I'm not trying to break it. Jyll knew it was my first time and walked around the class, often stopping to adjust my posture and bring awareness to certain parts of my body. She understands if you need to break a pose and respects that. The space is warm and inviting and even though I brought a mat, the studio is fully equipped with blocks, mats, blankets, and straps (which she encourages everyone to use). I bought the new student 3 class special, and so far I've taken two at this studio. My first class was with Corey who just made the class so much fun. He was just what I needed to get back into yoga after a year hiatus. The second class was with the founder, Jyll, who put us through difficult but amazing sequences. Her notes were extremely helpful and despite her class being very popular, she still managed to give individual notes throughout the class. You could really tell she was always paying close attention to all of her students and genuinely cared. The studio itself is simple but beautiful and clean. I was very lucky to have found Urban Asanas on my recent visit to Brooklyn/NYC. In one week I did several classes and one all out yoga 4/20 party, which was a super fun and social--a great way to connect with the local community. I took classes with several of the teachers and they were all great. Jyll, the owner, is a particularly special human. I have practiced yoga on and off for 10 years and my last 3 living in crown heights Jyll made maintaining a consistent practice light work due to the welcoming energy, authentic vibe and all around dope teachings. I live in Providence now and I still make it back for an urban asanas class at least every other month. Today, i met took her class and i must say she has an outgoing, loving personality. She's super relatable. I've been coming here for about six months now and I really enjoy the yoga classes. They are calm peaceful and there is absolutely no competition. Jyll the owner is sweet and lovely to work with. I usually go to Chauncie or Tara's classes I really like to be able to do an hour of yoga instead of 90 minutes if that's what I need. I find those classes have a good balance of stretching. Muscle building. And perfecting of poses. Also, every time I walk in I am greeted with a smile and sometimes even a hug. I've always hated yoga. I was more of a CrossFit, boxing, long distance running athlete who got really annoyed with the sometimes pithy sermons and endless boring stretches. Then I found Jyll. First off, as a 20+ year resident of crown heights I was delighted to see someone from the neighborhood open a business for the neighborhood. And then there's UA's unique cocktail of perfectly aligned, solid centered, sweaty, challenged to quivering, laugh out loud fun yoga...... Wow........ When Jyll says "I'm gonna serve it to ya", SHE SERVES. Think Debbie Allen meets Erykah Badu with a couple sprinkles of Cardi B and a hug at the end. I've gained tons of flexibility and strength coming to her classes. That said, after she made me decide I actually like yoga, I checked out some other places with a more open mind. While I had great experiences at other studios, it did make me realize that I've never done the same routine twice at UA. Never. It's always so fresh and spicy that the mild confusion figuring out the transitions and contortions puts you right smack dab in the middle of your body with your brain attached. This ladies and gentlemen is what we call mindfulness. Also, Corey's class on Wednesday is often the most fun that happens all week. Shout out to popcorn. If you live in the Crown Heights area and you like staying active, you should already be at Urban Asanas. If you're not, what are you waiting for?! I found this place through a Groupon deal after months of dealing with health issues and wanting to better myself. I felt myself slipping mentally and emotionally as well as physically. I couldn't get out of bed sometimes. My depression was at an all time high. So, I decided to get back into yoga to try to find some sort of alignment in my life. I was blessed enough to walk into Jyll's class for my first time back. Because of Jyll and this studio, I feel more alive that I've felt in soooo long. She snapped me back into reality, forced me to face myself, and truly get in touch with my body and my mind. All of that was during my first class. Her methods and energy were exactly what I needed and it came right on time. Not only does Jyll offer great classes, the community classes are awesome too! Now, I'm hooked. Jyll's radiating love and support helped save me from myself. I am in such a better place physically, mentally, and emotionally after taking her classes. And the best part? I was a student of Jyll's when she was at Shambhala Yoga. She was my first regular yoga teacher and helped me break down my internal barriers to being a plus size person pursuing a yoga practice. She was so encouraging, pushing me to my own limits, and reminding the class all the time that yoga is not a team sport--it's an individual endeavor. She taught me so many modifications to help me reach my own personal limit, even when the pose the class was doing was a little too challenging for my level of flexibility and/or body size. She's great at accommodating injuries for folks recovering. Jyll has an amazing personality--she's lively and engaged, an expert about yoga and also extremely demanding of her students in a gentle way. Kind of like a strict mom you want to please. She will be real with you. She will make sure you're at your limit but not push you too hard. She is spiritual in a really deep and meaningful way and I never felt put-off by it before I myself got spiritual and now that I am spiritual I really appreciate it on a deeper level. I like when she reminds us to allow her to do the thinking for us for 90 minutes, it's an amazing way to check out of the busy Brooklyn lifestyle. Going to yoga and studying with Jyll for three years helped me break my barriers to going to the gym, and I decided to join the Bed Stuy YMCA. I ran out of cash in my exercise budget and stopped going to see Jyll, which kind of sucked and I missed her. In those non-Jyll years she opened her own studio in Crown Heights (Urban Asanas), really close to where I live. A friend brought me back to Urban Asanas and to Jyll. I am so impressed with the studio! It's such a warm space, with lots of burnt orange and yellows and reds (sunset colors), a sweeping altar space in the front of the room, free mat rentals, blocks and straps. As long as I just show up in my yoga clothes, the rest is covered by Urban Asanas. I'm so glad to be back in a yoga practice and so happy to have the dose of Jyll every week. It's definitely more than an exercise experience, it helps me be a more relaxed, open and aware human. I haven't tried the other instructors at the studio but Jyll is the owner and she doesn't put up with any BS so I trust her instincts for who she has working for her. I've attended three classes so far and this is my kind of place! I like it for the following reasons: -Free mats and towels to use during the class (great for those who aren't ready to commit to purchasing yoga accessories) -Not crowded by boutique yoga goers so you don't feel like you have to perform each pose or show off your sexy yoga pants. -The community classes ACCEPT ONLY DONATIONS, which I think is great considering the dwindling sense of community Crown Heights' gentrification has caused. In fact, I have coffee plans with one of my classmates (mommy, I made a friend today!). Not gonna lie, the coffee plan is what made me write this yelp review :P -The instructors take their time with each person. You're not lagging behind in poses and rushing to play catch up. They're also really chill and personable, which sadly isn't a given with yoga instructors. What makes her class so awesome? * She's incredibly good at describing exactly how to do postures correctly * She has super-human awareness, so she can see what you're doing wrong and help you fix it * She has a special way of motivating you to always try your hardest * She's funny, loud, and all love/no judgement I'm not really a yoga person, but I think Jyll's class is the best workout I've ever done. I LOVE URBAN ASANAS and I LOVE JYLL. I moved into the area about 5 months ago and was looking for a nearby studio that I could get my practice on and found urban asanas and I'm so happy I did. It has made living in the neighborhood so great because everything about the studio, the instructors, and students are warm and welcoming. Jyll is tough and hilarious and loving. I find myself going more and more often to Urban Asanas even though I have another yoga studio membership (this one in the city so more convenient to make classes if work runs late). I love this studio. Used to take the noon class weekdays with whomever was teaching and never had a bad class. And then there's Jylls Sunday classes which are, truly, for everyone. Aside from her energy and humor, which make me feel like I belong there every time, what I really love is how skilled she is in describing what you should do to get the most out of a pose. She uses descriptive words- how you place your fingers, how you open your chest, etc in such a way that you don't need to know much yoga lingo to get where you need to be. I love this place! I attended this place for the first last Wednesday for Lacey's 9pm Urban Unwind class. The studio looks like it is inside an apartment building, but once you get inside it is very well decorated, warm, and inviting. They have their own mats and blocks that you can borrow if you don't feel like carrying yours there. When I showed up I just purchased a single class, but before I left I asked it to be changed into their 3 classes for 30$ offer for new students. Jyll is amazing! I have been to her power yoga and restorative yoga classes and both were fantastic. Jyll takes the time to focus on your alignment and make sure that you are doing the poses properly.
