Meh. 2 stars for the welcome, by the person who didn't teach. The class was a stretch session rather than the vinyasa flow it was advertised as. The teacher was a sub, who may be different from the normal teacher, but the people in class (other than me) seemed to enjoy it. It was slow stretches with one round of tree pose. Max 2 vinyasa flows, I had to add in my own flows to get even a hint of a workout. If you need to get centered and aren't about the workout, this may be for you. If you want to get some kind of strengthening in, maybe try a different studio. read more

I wanted to give Dou 3 stars but "Meh. I've experienced better" is exactly my thought. It's just around the corner, but I don't intend to go again after attending about 15 classes over the course of several months. I do recommend co-founder Yuuki's class as he's very gentle, gradual and grounding (he should perhaps enforce his style on more of the instructors). And David is good if you're in a slow-burn, punk mood. Other teachers are hit-or-miss and it's invariably crowded at all hours (from Pratt students in the day, to office workers after dark). By crowded, I mean I'm in plank and there are human toes nearly under my nose! The kiss of death for me is that you seldom get a proper savasana because of the radio/human noise from the grocery store below. None of these things add up to a $17 drop-in rate for me. read more

I. love. this. place. I've been practicing regularly here for about five months now and - although I've enjoyed yoga on and off for years - honestly don't think I would have developed any kind of regular practice if it weren't for the down-to-earth vibe, excellent teachers, and sense of fun at Dou (and the fact that it's a few blocks from my apartment). Everyone I've taken class from here has a unique philosophy to share and shows real interest in and concern for their students. No one seems like they're coasting or checked out - classes are different every time and tailored to the needs of the students in the room. There is a very little bull shit here - I have been really turned off in the past by studios who force a contrived "at peace with the whole world" vibe. At Dou, nothing is too precious, and the individual is never steamrolled by an idea of what "should" be happening. So the yoga can actually happen. I particularly love David and Christina - they both make me laugh and teach me something new in every class. I basically schedule my life around their classes now, which isn't something I ever thought I'd do! The lovely tree and huge bay window in front of the studio are an added bonus. This place has been sort of hit-or-miss with the teachers. I've really enjoyed Holly's beginner class. They were having some issues with their computer system to keep track of your payments, but it seems like that's sorted out. The main gripe is that it's pretty expensive, and the smallest package deal you can get is 10 classes. And the packages expire in 3 months. It isn't totally customer-friendly. read more

After taking a break from yoga for over two years (and parting on bad terms), a heap of tension brought me to Dou Yoga for a "Strengthen and Relax" class with Ariel. My experience as a brand new, somewhat apprehensive student was totally positive from start to finish. My two concerns with going to a new studio (like trying a new gym) are a) Can I make it through physically? and b) Will I feel comfortable here? As far as feeling comfortable, Dou set me right at ease. The vibe here is very friendly and welcoming. Ariel came over before class and introduced herself and asked about my experience, and was very diligent during the class about suggesting modifications for poses, making me feel it was okay to take it easy when I needed to, or try again after I fell over. The mood in the class was lighthearted and joyous, including laughter and occasional birdcalls. By the end of the session I felt great, and actually looking forward to making yoga a regular part of my schedule again! read more

I love this studio. There is a wide variety of classes offered at reasonable times for reasonable prices. They also offer a work study program where you can help prep and clean up after class in exchange for a free class. It's fantastic. Teachers are nurturing and really encourage you to modify according to your needs. It is a judgement free zone and the teachers really emphasize the beauty of knowing and appreciating the uniqueness of your own body. Yoga tune up is my favorite class and worth a visit. The yoga balls work out knots that I didn't even know I had. I always feel incredible when I leave that class. If you haven't visited this studio, I highly recommend checking it out. It is literally the best studio I have practiced in. :) read more

I love this studio and the three different classes and teachers I have tried thus far! I can say all the usual stuff - about why I love this studio: good instruction, good vibes, decent rates but the two main reasons I keep going back are: I always feel like the instructors "lessons" or "reflections" for the day are dead on and totally relatable. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY FOR THIS REASON: I have laughed in all three classes taught by different instructors (2 made me laugh a lot -so much that I find myself craving that laughter ... I think it is really really cool to not take it all so seriously and just laugh as much as possible....totally restorative in many ways... also there is a LOVELY Cherry Blossom bursting through the studio bay windows which makes this place a little more special.. happiness is a good laugh while stretching and breathing :) read more

Each time I visit, it has been an absolute pleasure. I take yoga not only for the fitness aspect, but the relaxation. My job has become a bit more stressful and I needed a routine that could calm me at the end of the day. This has been my fourth time visiting and each experience has been wonderful. This was my favorite studio in Brooklyn and I happily made the trek in the mornings for Linnea or Ariel's morning classes when I first moved to town. They were the kind of teachers I really needed at the time, confused in my new town and reeling from a recent personal loss. I wanted to keep my daily practice to a certain degree, and I didn't want to do "yogarobics." I really wanted to get the nurturing (and yes, sweaty) support of a neighborhood studio, and I was not disappointed. When I did need a bit more yang/sweat, I went to the afternoon power yoga classes, which had more of an athletic bent, but never really losing that core of self-care and sadhana that Dou imparted. The classes varied based on the instructor, but I came to really enjoy Ariel's classes the most as she had a kind of earthy, knowledgeable demeanor. Super old soul! Her flows were very creative, sometimes taking us to all points of the room, and had a great balance of ease and challenge. She read the room well, offered supportive cues, and acted more like a friend than a sage, which is great. Beginner's mind, man. I loved it. Linnea similarly was a knowledgeable and compassionate teacher who taught with intent! I was lucky enough to be in her classes when she was programming around the chakras, which again was great for the kind of healing vibe I needed. I felt that I found the studio when I needed it the most, and I am forever grateful. The price for the classes and workshops seemed like a downright bargain when compared to other studios in the city, where $20 and over seemed to be the norm. I was lucky to have found a great groupon deal when I first joined, but returned several times for workshops. If I were to take a teacher training, this would be the spot I'd want to do it at (I've considered it many times). I found that when I was looking for new apartments, I always checked Clinton Hill to see if I could be closer to Dou. It never happened but I hope that when I return to NYC I will! I never write reviews, but after my experience at Dou Yoga I feel the need to warn other women about the negligence of the instructors there. I am in my first trimester. I informed the instructor before the Morning Express class. And then, without warning, she BLASTED the heat in the room. The class description said nothing about it being a hot yoga class, and she could have told me when we spoke before class. The instructors don't think about the safety of their students and I will never be going back there. read more

Location: convenient to many buses and subways. Yeah space is large, clean, and has beautiful windows. Unfortunately it is above a very noisy restaurant; perk- practice your mindfulness and refocusing skills. Cost: I like their student pricing and new member trial price. Teachers: David's class was an interesting approach that seemed more like a restorative class rather than a workout. I liked his focus on alignment. Georgia's class was very restorative and again, not a workout. So take these if that's what you're looking for. I got the best balance of exertion and restoration from Linnea. 3.5 stars. This is not the right studio for me, but I won't mind going here when other options aren't available. I's a very chill place. Jamming out Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, small talk and giggles in and before class, 'it's only yoga' type of mentality. Teacher was a sweet and bubbly girl named Ariel who seemed to tune in well the pace and intensity of the class. Minus - ..too much chatting before and after class. Personally I like to sit in meditation a few minutes before and after, to ground myself and connect to spirit. Didn't see any changing rooms..? Plus Beautiful big window, letting in tons of light. Relaxed environment. In general it's tricky to find a studio that embodies yoga, as opposed to imitating it. But this is definitely a place that is good for a class every now and then. read more

I've been to Dou several times over the past month or so, and every class was a great experience. The overall vibe of the school is positive, low-key, and unintimidating. All the classes I've attended were challenging, but not super aggressive in the workout sense. Different classes/ instructors had distinctly different flows, which I liked. Surprised a reviewer was complaining about heat; every time I've gone, the room was on the chilly side. Not a deal breaker for me. If you are finicky, wear layers. read more

This is a really wonderful community studio. I've been going for over a year and I've really learned a ton. My favorite teachers are David and Linnea - both are incredibly interesting and challenging teachers (I wish Linnea taught more frequently!). I guess what these two teachers have in common is that they both teach a combination of super sweaty challenging stuff combined with meditation. I go to yoga to feel sane and good - exercise is part of that but the meditation has also been really helpful for me. David's classes get crowded because he's so popular, so show up early! The studio also has really good deals for students/teachers which makes it very affordable for me. My only complaint is how cold it is during the winter. I gather they have issues with the landlord but it's still completely nuts that it's often 50 degrees in there in the winter. Docking one star for that. read more

I've lived in New York 10 years and have been to more than a handful of yoga studios that the city has to offer. I've been coming to Dou for the last 4 of those 10 as both a work-study (check-in attendees and general maintenance of the studio in exchange for free access) and as a regular practicing yogi. Dou is a beautiful space and perhaps, at times, uniquely non-conforming to your regular studio as some other reviews negatively mention. Just because instructors don't wear Lululemon doesn't mean they don't know what they're doing, let alone not care. I find this aspect refreshing quite honestly and, that said, I can highly recommend David Silverberg's classes as both challenging, informative, and entertaining. David is extremely knowledgable and dedicated to both the practice and history of yoga (so much so he is going to Columbia to study Sanskrit). read more

When I moved to the neighborhood I was looking for a yoga studio near my apartment. I got the new student three class pass which is a good deal. The space is bright and clean and though there's the usual NYC noises, it's on par with other places I've been. The first class I tried I wasn't crazy about. The teacher's style just didn't work for me. Then I found Georgia! She teaches mainly afternoon classes and since I work a late shift at work, I can go to one before I head in. She is phenomenal--one of the best teachers I've ever had and her class is by far my favorite. She is the reason Dou has become my new go-to yoga studio! read more

I started going to Dou because they had a LivingSocial deal you couldn't beat - $20 for 20 classes. I think I used 16 or 17 of my 20 before the time limit ran out, and this was my first time rekindling my practice after 2-3 years of lethargy. It hit the spot and the day my LS deal expired, I picked up a 20-class card. It's great to have them in the neighborhood The general vibe of the place is one I greatly enjoy. That being said, some teachers are just not my style. Hamid Elsevar and David Silverberg's classes are challenging and have helped me to learn a lot about my practice. I've been to many yoga studios in New York and this one stands out for its ambiance (very relaxed, clean, open, friendly) and the quality and dedication of the teachers. There's no 'tude at all from the students or the teachers. There's no aggressive jockeying for spots. They've nailed the flexible pricing and easy sign in (no cards or paper forms that you have to deal with). Great variety of teachers to choose from depending on if you want something mellow or ass kicking. I've been going regularly for about 9 months and can't say enough good about it. read more

Went to my first and last class at Dou Yoga this Sunday- you can take my review as you like but I wasn't a fan. I dropped in with a friend and paid the $17 fee, which is a little expensive but standard for a small studio. I expected the class to be limited to a few people but instead they packed us in, if I wanted my neighbor smacking me in the face I would have gone to YTTP, at least they only charge you $10! There wasn't even enough room for the teacher to go around the class, she was practically plastered against the wall. At other studios I usually have shied away from the standard yogi music and colt-like mantras, but here I found myself missing them as we listened to modern hip-hop, and I don't mean the music coming from the neighboring apartment, though that was nice too... Overall it wasn't a horrible class, but I don't think I will be going back- especially after they read my review. read more

The studio is lovely and clean, but located above a bar. The weekend morning classes are great, quiet with sun streaming through the big glass windows, but the evening ones are hard to focus through because the bar sounds come right up into the studio. Kate's Sunday celebration is a good mix of different things with plenty of space to adapt your own practice and find your own spaces for growth. Despite the sound, Linnea's evening classes are also great and not too crowded, so she adapts the class to the students. Some of the teachers are better about this than others. Overall, I appreciate the humor and relaxed atmosphere of the studio and very much appreciate my weekly visits. read more

I took a class at this studio and I liked the vibe at this place. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly, non-pretentious. Instructor Christina provided a very good flow during the class, smooth transitions are well developed and are easy to follow, and practice. She made a few adjustments during the class, which was very helpful to me personally. The music for this class was well selected. Great place! My first class was so crowded to the point of doing a downward facing dog meant being an inch away from someone's butt. Second class on the following week was empty. Third class..same problem over crowded. Hint to Dou-Yoga; if the room seems to be at a dangerous capacity then maybe the person accepting the $$$ should do less talking and pay attention to a potential fire hazard. Their is also a lot of chatter between staff...which can be annoying if your trying to get calm before class. Overall I would try a different class on a different day to see if this overcrowding is a reoccurring factor. It doesn't seem as though they have a capacity max....and if they do...then maybe its time to find another yoga studio less crowded. Class instruction was also a bit confusing. david's classes are the only good thing to come from this studio. everything else is so meh & left me so unimpressed - including the people who work the desk. the space is small, they are quick to turn away students, there is no changing room, the prices are high and the teacher's are nothing special. all of the classes (with the exception of david's) felt like a warm-up rather then full yoga class. i feel that in the fort greene area you can find other amazing studios with talented teachers who actually assist and take time to get to know their students & their practice for the same price. read more

I live just a few blocks away from this studio and was really excited to try it out, but the class I took with Christina this weekend just wasn't very good. Her instructions weren't clear (lots of confused looks as we transitioned from pose to pose), there were a couple of times when she forgot to repeat a sequence on the second side, and the vibe just seemed "off." I left feeling like I might not go back, although maybe next time I'll just try a different teacher. read more

This is the yoga studio for you if you like rigidity, rules, and valley girl instructors. I came in 5 minutes to an admittedly crowded but not full class. I was turned away because there was "no room," though there were several places that could easily have fit my mat. It's standard practice at every other yoga studio in New York to squeeze people in and the rigidity at Dou Yoga is incredibly off-putting. Rather than heeding the "friendly" reminder to come 15 minutes before class, I'd rather just head to another studio next time. read more

I really wanted to like this studio because it seems very no frills and is close to my apartment. I have gone to a number of yoga classes and am usually very appreciative when instructors provide attention and hands on assistance. However, this particular instructor, Amy, provided so much assistance it was disruptive to my practice. She seemed impatient and overly critical - she asked me so many questions ("Have you decided to skip the inversion and move straight to Savasana?" - I hadn't, I was just pausing before I started) during the session that it felt more like physical therapy than yoga class. This was the first time I have ever left a yoga class before it ended. There is also a really loud bar downstairs - it was a constant mashup of Amy's music and the bar's. read more

I bought a Living Social deal to Dou Yoga because it was in my neighborhood. Having only been to a yoga class twice, maybe three times prior to going here I don't have much to compare it too. However, after going to almost a dozen classes with different instructors a handful of times, i think this place is great! (Janna is really awesome!) The instructors are really thorough and i feel really rejuvenated when i walk out. The only downfall is, and this could be depending the time of day you go, there is some foot/bus/street/car (horn) traffic and can sometimes be a little annoying when you're in your "zone." Overall, I'm really happy we have a great house of yoga in the 'hood! read more
