The space is gorgeous, the classes and workshops diverse, but more importantly, the owners/instructors embody the spiritual/Bhakti yoga principles I seek when I'm on my mat in a yoga studio. Not all yoga studios are created equally. Prema yoga moved to this location a couple years ago and it's the one I'm familiar with. The room is serene, spacious and enlightening which is conducive in a yoga practice. Aside from workshops (I attended two onsite retreats with special guest and guru master Ragghunath Cappo), their website's calendar is packed with Kirtan and retreats (on my bucket list) as well as YTT. The instructors vary in their style of teaching and I'm sure all are very good. I've experienced a few but the owners Amanda and Bobbie tend to be my faves. I loved Bobbie's Sunday night Yin yoga which I think has made a comeback on the schedule. Prema is my favorite yoga studio in the neighborhood. This little oasis on Court Street can be the key to deepening one's practice while at the same time projecting a sense of community. Beautiful space, nice location in Cobble Hill, and lovely yoga instructor. While traveling, I dropped by for their Saturday morning live music yoga and it was beautiful to hear the music and the yoga was good. The yogis were friendly as well. Overall, a nice vibe. Like lots of popular yoga places, it was pretty crowded in that class. They also burned sage, so if you're not into hippie incense stuff, get there a bit early and put yourself far away from it. Bathrooms: I believe there was just one bathroom, and it might be partially blocked by yogis on mats near the time class starts. read more

I've only been here once (last night) but I plan on returning very soon! The studio is very cozy, with hard wood floors, soaring high ceilings, big windows and nice touches throughout. I went to the 8:30pm Monday night class which was awesome - this particular class fee is by "donation" so it doesn't break the bank which is always nice too. :) Sammi Friedman was the teacher - she was wonderful! Super thorough, friendly, had great energy and got really personal with each of us. It was refreshing! She was great in explaning the poses and showing us how to do them... right! A Gem Prema calls a beautiful lofty Salon level brownstone as their home. the space is one large room, with soaring celing and huge windows. The studio is humble but exudes a warmth, especially the hot summer night I ventured over for an hour and a half of vinyasas. One gets the feeling that this neighborhood studio has much more in mind for it's future. Talks of live music accompanying classes and dancing; how cool is that? Though I only went to one class, they offer discounts to students and their $100 for unlimited classes seems like a fair enough rate. Drop in for $17 and decide for yourself. read more

I've come here twice, through a groupon I purchased - i think it was $25 for a 5 class pack that must be used within two months of the first class. I've taken a mid afternoon class with Bobbie and a Sunday morning class with Lesley, both vinyasa. They were both really friendly and hands-on. Bobbie's mid afternoon class had under ten students, so there was a lot of room to flow as I needed, though her class tends to flow slower and hold positions longer than I like. If you like a sort of slow flow, I would recommend Bobbie. Lesley's class was great. very quick position changes and kept on point with breath flow. She seems to know exactly what her students need. I was attempting headstand, but had to retreat to child's because I had overworked my shoulders, and almost as soon as I did this she came over, sat on me and gave me a shoulder massage. (thank-you!) I took of one star for a couple minor things: - drop in class is very steep... $17 is crazy expensive... but I assume it's because of the location. If it weren't for the groupon I would have never come to this studio - the space is SMALL. I mean... it is beautiful, but it is the size of a brownstone's dining room... maybe a bit bigger than that. In the Sunday class I was constantly kicking the person behind me in the head and had a face full of man feet (not cute.) Luckily the person directly beside me (i was on the end of a row) was in sync with my movements so the two of us never had a space issue. read more

Prema is wonderful. I purchased the unlimited month Groupon in a fit of an existential crisis and I am so glad I did. I committed myself to going to yoga every workday and man, I have seriously gotten my money's worth. The teachers are very good, make individual adjustments and give really clear and helpful instructions. Some are a little more spiritual than others. I'm not into chanting and stuff, so I just stay quiet. I think they strike a good balance between meditation/restorative poses and more powerful/athletic ones. My favorite class is the guided self practice on Friday mornings. Amanda and Bobbie are awesome! They have bathrooms and a shower, so I oftentimes will shower and go to work straight from class. read more

I adore this place! I've sampled many yoga studios around the neighborhood and this one is my favorite--it has such a calm, welcoming vibe and the space is beautiful. I started doing yoga reluctantly due to injuries that sidelined me from running, my sport of choice. The wonderful instructors here have made me love yoga in earnest; I always feel happy and refreshed after a class at Prema. And I'm obsessed with Amanda's conditioning class! It's about time I write a review for this very special place. I've been practicing at Prema Yoga for around 5 years now--sometimes more consistently than other times. I can't recommend the studio and teachers enough! It is so much more than a studio. It is also a community of amazing, welcoming, fun, interesting and diverse people and friends. I have taken classes at a number of studios in NYC, especially when I first started practicing but now Prema has become my regular yoga sanctuary. This studio is the real deal and truly embodies all aspects of yoga from the rigorous vinyasa classes, to the philosophy and teachings, meditation, kirtan (chanting) and all in a non-scary, welcoming way. The teachers are phenomenal and seem to intuit what you need that day: do you want to challenge yourself pushing the limits of your practice in advanced variations of poses? Are you easing your way back after a yoga hiatus? Are you working on twisting poses? There is also a great sense of fun in every class. You can expect to sweat, laugh, make friends, deepen your practice and master poses you never imagined you could. You'll walk out of class feeling amazing and looking forward to your next visit. I've noticed that the few negative reviews focus on how crowded the classes are. There are some classes, particularly on weekends, that can get very crowded but now that the studio has recently moved into a larger space at 498 Court St. this is much less of an issue and the majority of the classes are not full so you will have your opportunity to play and take up space during these classes. (Also, I don't think a very crowded studio is a bad thing at all. There is something to be learned from having to practice and place your poses carefully and not "flailing". Plus, the most crowded classes are usually for very popular, senior teachers who know how to lead a busy class and still provide personal attention and adjustments to all.) I hesitate to give "shout outs" to specific teachers since there are just so many gems at Prema, but here is who I've been practicing regularly with lately: Amanda, Marcus, Aaron, Maria, Bobbie. It's a small studio and they don't limit the class. Prema is an excellent yoga studio. The space is cozy + the atmosphere is very friendly, but the main reason I go there is for Amanda Harding's classes. I have tried dozens of different yoga instructors at studios around the city, and Amanda is a rare type of teacher. Regardless of your level or ability, you will find her classes challenging and inspiring. I began taking her classes as a beginner, and I have slowly felt myself progress because of her excellent corrections and encouragement. Her classes are never boring because they are never repetitive -- and her great sense of humor is also a bonus. I don't live in the neighborhood, but I am happy to travel to Prema to take Amanda's classes. I have also heard that Lesley's classes are wonderful-- and from the one workshop I attended with her, I will definitely be back to try more of her classes. read more

Wow. What an incredible experience it is to practice at Prema. The space is gorgeous, and the vibe is so welcoming and feels so grounded. This is my happy place. I've practiced at various studios throughout the city and have never found such a connection to a space, nor to teachers the way I do here. Came here for the first time yesterday. I've been practicing yoga for many years and have attended several studios (especially since joining Classpass last year). While I have found a few amazing spots and have my favorites, I felt this studio was different than many I've tried. First of all, I think the studio is beautiful and homey. It has a really positive, welcoming vibe. I took Align & Flow with Jonathan. I usually don't love alignment classes, as instructors can get so focused on the poses to the point where you cannot enjoy the class. I didn't feel that way here. Jonathan was very knowledgeable and encouraging. I agree with other reviewers in that they focus on the anatomy more than other places I've tried. As somebody who is trying to deepen her practice, I want to make it a point to come down to this studio more often for that kind of knowledge. Definitely recommend. read more

I am a recent convert to yoga which means I'm a tough customer. While some people may like the UES bling of Pure Yoga, and I do sometimes too, other times you want to be in a quiet, comfy, peaceful space, far from the madding crowd. Prema does this. I take morning classes, held in the front room of a Carroll Gardens brownstone. It's lovely, but not prissy, and feels intimate, with each of the instructors really bringing a different personality and bent to the practice. I like each of them for different things, Ariel for her cerebral wit, creativity, and make it yours attitude, Nami for her spritely, healing ways and mysticism, and Amanda gives a graceful, warm and holistic class. Each pushes you gently to push yourself, makes me think about yoga and experience it differently, and enjoy it more. And it's just nice to come out at the end of class and not get caught up in ten-deep foot traffic. You get to carry the yoga high a bit longer--especially if you then have to wait for the G train! read more

I really like Prema. The instructors are knowledgeable about anatomy which really helps with maintaining poses in the right way. I've done a lot of Vinyasa flow classes where there is no individual focus. Prema instructors come around and adjust poses and make sure you don't injure yourself. Lesley D. takes the time to give thoughtful and effective adjustments and she is always smiling, always bright, always positive and friendly. A beautiful teacher and woman. I am so honored to have Prema only a hop skip & a jump away from my home. Not because of the convenience of its location but because of the all around vibe. It is more than just a yoga studio it is a yoga haven and a safe space where one can unveil and just be. The teachers are by far the best, not to say they are any better then the rest of the best but by far they are in the front line. I myself have a 200 hour YTT certification i dont teach but I know my stuff and I'm particular about the integrity a space holds when I'm holding my own practice. Please don't think this reveiw is to pimp out my local joint because I'm friendly with the folks running the establishment or the teachers because I'm not & that's not the case. Prema just has everything I personally need in a studio , there is a community if I want one, like an open hand when in need. I could go on & on about Prema but I don't find it neccasary to add the extra,. I guess I could say that's what I love the most about it, Prema leaves out the extra, unneeded and stands strong being simply enough. I mean that in the best way. This is a nice studio, and I've only been a handful of times, but every time I go I feel like we spend an hour of the time warming up and warming down and listening to the instructor ramble on about who knows what and about 30 minutes doing actual yoga. It gets really boring and tiresome, and I barely break a sweat doing actual yoga?!! The receptionist when checking in is also really cold and rude. Not highly recommended. read more
