I was looking at Google Maps when I saw Broken Yolk Café in Irvine. I saw the details and mentioned it to my family. Upon arrival, it was very busy and full of activity. I was informed that it was pretty new. Broken Yolk Café here in Irvine seemed to be a good place to be for brunch. I arrived in Irvine via Amtrak from Los Angeles and then hopped into my sister's car and we drove to Broken Yoke Café. We arrived around close to 10am and it was buzzing. We managed to get a table with 4 seats right away and that was particularly awesome. The service here was very friendly and we probably spent about an hour or so here before we got the check, paid, and left for home. The restaurant itself was fairly large and probably can sit about 75-100 people at any given time. We managed to get a table of 4 immediately, so that was awesome and no waiting involved. I ended up getting the breakfast steak and eggs and my family got their favorites and we just had breakfast as a family. It was nice to do this after an uneventful day of traveling. For the most part though, the experience here at the Broken Yolk Café was fun and casual, although I should have told them rate steak than medium, since I believe they cooked it more well done than medium. It was good, but more tough. The overall experience here at the Broken Yolk Café - Irvine was nice and the ambiance was good. Things are good here and the restaurant itself is clean. I did enjoy the clean décor and the wide open space that this restaurant. The chairs were good and sturdy. Not sure if they had wifi or not, but things were good and nice. No Flavor. The pancakes looked awesome but they were actually airy(had holes), dry and chewy. I tried adding butter and syrup but it just absorbed the liquid and went from dry to wet. Not pleasant. The machaca platter had zero flavor. No seasoning on the eggs, none on the meat and none on the veggies ( bell pepper, tomatoe and onion). Didn't taste like I was eating anything. Listed as "South of the border" I was expecting a burst of flavor. A sauce would help this dish out a ton if they choose not to season. The tortillas were nice and warm though. Absolutely not worth the price listed but even at a lower cost would not buy again. I also got the avocado toast. Again lacking flavor, though it was more forgivable as it is a lighter dish. Could have sprinkled some peppers, salt, something...anything lol. I was initially thrown off by the 2.00 online ordering fee even when going directly though the restaurant's website. But when going to third party sites to order I realize the prices are greatly inflated; by like 4.00-5.00 bucks per dish. I almost didn't purchase at all because if the inconsistent pricing, but wanted to try something new so went ahead anyway. It's been over a decade since I last stepped into a broken yolk. I believe it was on Garnet in pacific beach, SD. Quality is consistent after today's meal despite being an established chain. Service was great today. Staff worked in tandem to service us which is always a great way to ensure a pleasant dining experience. Inside is definitely modern decor compared to the tiki/hut vibe of the older locations. Clean is always good with food establishments. A side note would be the sensors in the bathroom. This is a wonderful breakfast spot when you can get in with minimal wait. I love how roomy and modern this restaurant is. The food tastes fresh and the service (aka prompt refills on coffee) is awesome the handful of times I've visited. As for the food, it's really nothing too special, just your basic breakfast spread and delicious when you crave it. For all I know it's the same stuff made by Sysco or US Foods. My mom and I were in the mood for some Easter brunch and decided to try this spot after having always driven past it. Even though Yelp said we were 21st in line, we ended up getting seated 5ish minutes after checking in. it's a cute and welcoming spot, though the light above our booth kept flickering in and out (?). I ordered the golden state benedict, my mom got the hash skillet, and we got a side of bacon. The first pass of our meal came out soon after ordering. I say first pass because we had to send 2 of our items back to the kitchen: my hashbrowns (that accompanied my benedict) and the side of bacon. The overarching word to describe our meal is "limp." My hash browns were limp. I don't think I've ever been served limper hashbrowns. I'm not one to send food back to the kitchen (I'll usually just tough it out), but I wanted crispy hashbrowns and these were just not up to par whatsoever. The bacon was also limp and chewy. Our server kindly took both dishes back to the kitchen, and everything came back a bit crispier soon after. My benedict itself was underwhelming. The English muffin was either severely undertoasted or not toasted at all. For me, an English muffin should be over toasted to compensate for the heavy hollandaise sauce, runny yolk, and all the residual moisture in a benedict -- this one was just limp again. The hollandaise sauce was too heavy and was missing some acidity to round out the sauce and balance all the flavours out. The sauce itself was also a tad broken, but that was honestly the least of my concerns. The hash skillet was arguably more mid. I want to say it was a 95:5 ratio of soggy potatoes to corned beef. There was maybe a soup spoon of corned beef hiding under the potatoes. TLDR: bland and mid. Disappointing experience, only made better by the fact that prices are fair. read more
