I'm a regular at Mugs and have always treated it as a reliable neighborhood spot to sit down with a proper latte. At $6.25 for a 16 oz, the baseline expectation is consistency--temperature, balance, and execution. Today's drink was, frankly, the worst I've had here--and it didn't even qualify as a latte. A proper latte should be built with espresso first, followed by well-textured milk at the correct temperature, integrated through a controlled pour. What I received instead tasted like espresso and milk were haphazardly combined, with no structure or technique behind it. The milk itself was improperly steamed--off-temperature and leaving a sour, flat, unpleasant finish. Even after a remake, the result was just as disappointing--tepid, flavorless, and simply wrong. Mugs is a new coffee shop in the Northwood Center near the Korean market. The layout has a lot to offer, two separate rooms to sit, drink coffee, and work on your computer. Therefore, a better name might be "chairs, " and not mugs. There are three separate rooms to find a seat, not including the outside patio. The staff is very friendly and helpful. It was a very hot day, so they gave us ice water right away. The coffee was great, for they have some special choices that tend to the sweet tooth in me. They also have the traditional unsweetened choices and lattes. Those are more what I like. Their pastries are wonderful. So many places are so crowded it is so hard to find a seat, not here. There is lot's of room. A couple suggestions to add to this wonderful place: add a few live plants, some soft music, artwork on the walls. I hate to say it, but the glasswork needs to be wiped down. Outlets - yes! Bad wifi. Mid matcha. I love the vibe of this cafe - a fun place to come with friends or to get work done. Service is fast and friendly. They are also pretty busy and popular, so it's hard to get a seat (I've come a couple times and its packed). I will have to say the double matcha was not worth. Honestly it's overall ok. The places vibe is set up mainly as either a quick 2 person coffee and chat or as a study coffee shop. But really just seems like a study or work coffee shop. The staff were pretty friendly and kind of helpful, lol IDK. So there's this trend where a lot of coffee shops for some reason don't like to tell you what's in their coffees? And that's fine since most places don't and most items on the menu are standard fare, but The Mugs had a drink I've never heard of called the Dalgona Latte (I'm not on TikTok so I missed it becoming viral in 2020 per my google of it later). Overcoming my personal issues of asking questions to a cashier I asked what this taste sensation was and was told that it's an iced coffee with sweet cream and candy. A little more detail somewhere would have been great or a better explanation! But quick service . As mentioned, I got the Dalgona Latte and was taken aback by it lol. The coffee sweet cream were good! It was a VERY rich coffee, I think? That's the best term that comes to mind when trying to describe it. There's a lot of seating indoors and outdoors. A lot of people come here to work/study inside. We sat outside, and it was great that the tables are in the shade with umbrellas to cover too. WiFi isn't the fastest, but good enough for light work or casual studying. Food & coffee: Started off with their Supremo drip coffee: smooth, strong, and just what I needed. Then I tried Mirado GR4 next: a bit more bitter, and my pleb palate couldn't quite pick up the fig, nougat, and brown sugar notes it claimed. Still, points for the zing I needed to get through my work. Said I wouldn't but caved and tried a croffle. I got the ham & cheese. VERY buttery. Tasty but def not worth the calories :/ The Mugs right next to Zion Market (the kimbap inside is great!) and you're surrounded by tons of restaurant options. They don't allow outside food inside, but the Mugs has a nice outdoor patio you can eat at if you buy food from elsewhere in the plaza. Parking: Easy and free in shopping center Service: Smooth & friendly. They carefully make most the drinks to order, so expect a little wait when it gets busy and they get busy quick. They've got both a self order kiosk and a human at the counter. What I didn't like: There's only one bathroom, it's clean-ish but the air freshener is way too strong and the ventilation can't keep up. The result? A bit of an olfactory battlefield, if you know what I mean. And the music....omg yikes. This was the real crime. Every song was worse than the last. Do yourself a favor and bring headphones. I make it a point to stop by at the Mugs when I'm on my way up to LA or passing through. Their coffee is so good because it isn't very sweet like many other coffee shop lattes. My personal favorite is the Dalgona Latte, the top is sweeter so usually when I drive it melts a bit and becomes a well mixed drink. It's been very consistent each time I've gone. I also love their plain/butter scone. They have a great texture and taste great both room temp or heated. I've typically gone to get it to go, but waiting inside it seem like a nice area to study. The croffle was a little on the smaller side however it was freshly made and slightly crispy and slightly sweet so it's delicious with the Americano that was pretty basic, but it was definitely an Americano. Strawberry cream latte has the perfect sweetness and tastes pretty much like a strawberries and cream coffee cake. Sweetness might be too much if you're not a fan of super sweet drinks. Black sesame croffle was a big hit for me, the frosting was a perfect blend of black sesame and sourness from the cream cheese. Croffle itself was crispy and chewy. A really good place for studying as well; there is bar-like seating, many tables, and even little rooms with more tables. They have the cutest drinks, I got a tiramisu iced latte. The croffle is a such a fun food idea, I love that it comes with some chips. I'm not sure the sauce it comes with as I didn't bother touching it so I don't know if it's for the chips or the sandwich. Wi-Fi was good and I was able to study all evening. This was such a cute spot to have a study date. I've been to The Mugs when they had a location in Fullerton, so it was cool to see one in Irvine. This location is located in the Northwood area. Parking is a little tricky since there's nearly 20 other businesses in the area, one being a huge supermarket. There's also an Electrify America charging station here, that I use from time to time. The coffee shop itself is divided into three study rooms, but it fills up pretty quick! I got their banana matcha and it was pretty good! It didn't taste super banana-y, but the matcha flavor was really good! This spot also sells paninis and sandwiches, along with other baked goods. They also offer free wifi here. I ordered the honey lavender latte with 50% sweetness. The staff were accomodating with the sweetness request. The drink itself was very milky, the coffee did not taste roasted at all (tasted like very weak instant coffee) with barely a hint of floral lavender. The cafe is a bit small so indoor tables were very limited. I sat outdoors, but was unable to connect to the wifi on my phone or laptop throughout my time there (showed an error message through their internet provider's website), which was disappointing as I was working there for about 2 hours with a friend on my phone's hotspot. The outdoor tables were sticky, wet and none were cleaned from the time I was there until I left. The table and chairs are also wobbly and there is no outdoor lighting - the cafe is in the shade and around 4pm it already was getting dark. The only restroom was also very dirty and extremely wet on the floor and sink. The restroom cleaning log was empty for the entire day and I was there in the evening around 5pm. Would not recommend. Stopped by this place as we were waiting for our table at Hako to be ready for us. It's next to Zion Market and it was pretty busy with students studying when we came. You can either order at the front cashier or there's a kiosk on the side. I ordered the blueberry matcha and my bf ordered the strawberries and cream latte (his first choice was to try the dalgona latte but they ran out). Both were so overly sweet, it tasted like a milkshake for both. My blueberry matcha barely had any matcha, it was more like blueberry milk with a squeeze of matcha SYRUP. Idk how they make their matcha but I saw her squeeze it out of a condiment bottle and I knew right away that I would not enjoy it. Cute coffee spot that took over Sootha by Zion! They do have a decent good selection on Coffee, House Specialty, Matcha, and Non-Coffee drinks. Food-wise they got bakery items or their Sweet Croffles and Savory Croffles. IMO - croffle prices are a just a tad bit little high BUT I understand it is Irvine. Every time I have visited this placed it is packed... inside and outside! Be warn - lots of students here studying... Service was not bad but just okay. Perhaps it was on my visits but I've noticed the working staff tends to chat amongst themselves a decent amount while not being fully engaged with the customers as we are ordering. Not to complain at all but just my observation and maybe even just those times I went. But I do enjoy the products so for that I will return. I've only had their Banana Caramel Latte and their Pizza Croffle. Both tasty amd solid choices. I did inquire how they make their banana latte with and they said banana powder.
