had high expectations due to their high rating on yelp and was hoping for a good classic burger.. but it was disappointing. somewhere between a smash burger and regular burger, it was nothing remarkable and was definitely well-done. the buns were dry as well!!!!! the side was super lackluster. i got a baked potato that was underdone with measily amount of chives... to make matters worse the potato was barely seasoned. it was just dry and boring. my husband got a side salad and the server was trying to give a better deal but i think she wasn't really doing the math - half salad was priced at 7 and we asked if we could swap out the regular side with an extra cost if need. we should have been charged only 2 dollars more bc the "special" sides were priced at 7 and the salad is the same price!! on the bill, we were charged 4 dollar extra to get this iceberg filled lettuce with some dumb dressing that didn't taste good. they are definitely just ordering some mediocre crap from a major supplier or something and barely doing to cooking/curating the menu. the server did also a very confusing thing to put in an order for a different side bc she didn't know how to communicate with the kitchen what happened. they even made the imaginary order/place-marker order and we had to tell the food runner that we had not ordered that LOL i'm not sure if i'm explaining this correctly but the important conclusion is that they tried to charge a whopping 4 dollars extra to get this dumb salad that tasted so mediocre. and oh man this server was ever so confused anyways. overall bad taste in my mouth with bad food, math that didn't make sense on the check, and merh attitude and service. she ended up giving us a nominal discountbut the meal was so blah read more

I've come a few times to Broken Spirits and have enjoyed both the food and drinks! I've enjoyed the barbecue and though the portions may look small they are super filling and the sides are well seasoned and also delicious! Sylas helped us out with a new menu item, and made some good recommendations. I got the new 'broken barista' drink which is a gin with matcha syrup and strawberry foam, it had a subtle matcha flavor with fruity flavor and very smooth. I honestly struggle to give this place a 3 or a 4 ... but I'll put in for 4 since my fiancé had a great experience the first time even though the second time we were there with our dogs we were pretty snubbed. Came here for a quick snack and to try out their whiskey because 'broken spirits distillery' right? and we were seated outside after we entered the front and were escorted to the table. But there must have been some kind of in-fighting going on with the staff service outside because since one person sat us, but presumably didn't work the outdoor tables, the person who DID work the outdoor tables literally REFUSED to give us service. He would not look at us, give us the time of day, or even look in our direction. We sat for a good 15 min and could not order until my fiancé went inside to the bar to ask if we should be ordering at the bar inside instead. The staff obviously immediately took our orders after, but it was all of the staff inside the restaurant where the person who worked the other outdoor tables continued to ignore us and would chat with the customers for 10 min at a time at tables next to us. It was nice that the staff inside kept checking in on us and even got our doggos some doggie patties, but it felt like we got caught in between some kind of staff argument and got worse service because the person outside was mad at someone else not even us. I feel like this is just an odd experience. While we might come back because the location is great and the area is nice, and the outdoor aspect is wonderful with our pups, definitely hope that they resolve the staff issue. The service was good, and the waiter did tell us that they are short on the bartender, so drinks did come out slow. After enjoying some adult beverages down the street, we were searching for restaurant for dinner. I yelped a few potentials and it narrowed down to the Broken Spirits Distillery. By unanimous family decision, we opted to take the short walk over. We were lucky we were able to be seated immediately since the restaurant already busy with folks when we were seated at 1705 hours. The first thing I noticed was how friendly and pleasant the staff were! After being shown our table, our server came by and introduced herself as Anna. She was very patient with us asking for more time to make pour decisions for our drinks and appetizer order. We finally settled on our drink order: 3 - The Blacker the Berry (seltzer cocktails, 2 with added Vodka), 1 - I.H.O.B.S. (International House of Broken Spirits), 1 - Soda 1 - Crusted Warm Brie + Jam Entrees: 2 - Piggy Smalls (Steak Burgers) 1 - The Paso Robles (Tri-Tip Sandwich) 1 - 1/2 lbs Pork Belly (Craft BBQ) 1 - LB Pastrami (Sandwich) Our drinks were quickly dispatched to our table. It was really cool/fun to watch as our server, our my BIL's I.H.O.B.S cocktail from a mini syrup dispenser into his tumbler. I took a sip of this bourbon based cocktail. Holy S**t, this went down so smooth like sweet maple syrup with a bourbon flavor. That was one of the better cocktails I have had in my lifetime! I decided at that point, I would order one for my "dessert". My Blacker the Berry seltzer was good. Was advised there may have been a small amount of alcohol in it without the added vodka, and I was okay with that. I liked the taste of the berries used and it complemented my Piggy Smalls burger too. My wife like her Blacker the Berry with added vodka, my BIL's wife was kinda weirded out by the flavor of the vodka used. I took a sip of her and had to agree with her. It had the taste of tequila in the mouth, on the tastebuds, but after swallowing, has the aftertaste of vodka. We all enjoyed the Baked Brie with Jam a lot!! A very mild tasting small wheel of Brie, perfectly melted within its crust topped with the most delicious jam! The only downside was the kitchen is a bit stingy on the small toasted baguettes that accompany the Brie. We ended up with a good sized portion of cheese with no baguette to spread it on. SO we just ended up eating the cheese by itself. As for the entrees, our son liked his Piggy Smalls burger with waffle fries. As for my Piggy Smalls, it was ok. I wasn't overwhelmed by the burger. Sorry, it was ok, and unfortunately, as with all brioche buns (which I hate as a bun for a hamburger in general) broke apart and became so messy to eat, I finished it with a knife and fork. I ordered 3 Cheese Mac n Cheese as my accompanying side. It sounded great one the menu, but far far from what is described. It was more béchamel sauce and pasta with little to no discernible cheese flavor of any one cheese flavor let alone three cheeses. Really disappointed, but handed over it to our son, who liked it. My SIL's LB Pastrami sandwich was something I was considering to order, except, I'm not a fan of béchamel sauce, let alone on my pastrami. I'm a purist when it comes to what should a pastrami sandwich would be comprised of, so the béchamel sauce killed it for me. When my SIL gave me a bite, she told me she could not find any trace of béchamel sauce in her sandwich. I joked with her saying it was in my 3 Cheese Mac n Cheese. I tried her sandwich and the pastrami was pretty good. Juicy and tender, with a well defined smokiness to it. My wife's try-tip sandwich was unfortunately very, very dry. Previous Yelpers have also mentioned this as well. She boxed up the sandwich and will devour it at home once she adds some BBQ sauce to the leftovers. For her accompanying side dish, she ordered Street Corn, which she enjoyed very much My BIL devoured his half-pound of Craft BBQ Pork Belly. I looked over at his entree of glistening, glazed, pork chunks which he said were really moist and juicy. For dessert I ordered a IHOBS. Just a great cocktail to end my meal! My BIL's second cocktail, the Notorious P.O.G., was not as well received as his first cocktail, the IHOBS. To him, the Notorious P.O.G. reminded him of a Mai Tai. A one and done cocktail choice for him. Our wives both ordered "You're Killing Me Smalls...smore of what?". Yup, it was cold cocktail that was sweet and with a toasted marshmallow. They both really enjoyed it!! Overall, our server, Anna, was excellent, friendly and helpful with menu suggestions. The restaurant from our start to finish was very loud and it was hard to have a table conversation. Food was decent but nothing that would bring me back just for the food, but most certainly the cocktails and service. My side salad had a lot of wilted, bruised lettuce at the bottom (presumably because it had been made far in advance and sat in the fridge). One of those meals that makes you resent that you went to a restaurant and paid for it. Finally got to try Broken Spirits! We've lived in Downtown Long Beach for 7 years now, since before the pandemic, and have seen so much change on Pine and the revolving door of businesses. We're truly thrilled and grateful to have a spot to enjoy. We went on a Friday around 5 p.m. and tried the mezcal cocktail and a hazy IPA, along with a burger and the Thai wings. Our server turned out to be one of the owners, and he was incredibly kind, he gave my daughter mac and cheese and even had us try the bread pudding. We asked for an umbrella to block the sun, which was brought over but the moment another party walked in, they (the servers) kept moving our umbrella to accommodate them instead of bringing a new one out. It was like forget us I did not eat while here. I simply wanted to try the spirits. They have a lot of good options. Some straight to the point and some flavored. I'm sadly so disappointed in this place! It's always hit or miss when we come. When they get it right, the food is bomb, however when they miss, it's BAD! The thing that always leaves us perplexed is having a dish brought out with cold meat. It never fails, we order the sampler and something is always cold. We order the rack of lamb, they've come out cold. We order a quesadilla and the brisket inside is cold... like come on! Do you know how frustrating it is to receive your food and it be cold!? The amount of times they've had to comp something on our bill or offer us cocktails for the mishap is mindblowing! I think the straw that finally made me realize that they really don't care about their customers is today's visit! Back in July, I ordered the Ribeye Focaccia after the bartender recommended it. It was absolutely delicious! So much so, I went back several days later and was disappointed. I order it again and guess what, the ribeye was cold!? How!? Fast forward to today... I was craving the Ribeye Focaccia! Tell me why I order the ribeye focaccia and it was half the size and came out on ciabatta bread! There was no warning from the server that the sandwich was not served on focaccia or that the kitchen ran out. Are they really trying to pass fluffy yet flavorful flatbread off as a hard piece of ciabatta. I was over it and I don't think I'll be back, unless it's for drinks. They're really starting to cut corners on things and you can tell! In the timeframe my wife and I have supported and rode the wave at Broken Spirits, I truly believe their spirits are BROKEN!
