Everything about this experience made me so happy that Red Hook has a new restaurant full of casual elegance and impeccably rendered classic French and new French dishes. First: the wine list was varied and obviously curated with love. The white wines were all quite distinct. The service was extremely friendly - like neighbor to neighbor - yet great care was taken in a non oppressive way to make sure we liked what we were drinking (or they would have taken it back immediately). Next: the food. I won't bother you with the specifics of what we ordered but it was all just, well delightful. Fun, interesting, complex flavors yet prepared in a classic manner. Go there. If I could give a zero rating to our experience at this restaurant I would. As it is, a 1 star will have to suffice. First, the wait was ridiculous, even giving considerable leeway for being short staffed. When we finally got our food, the food was average, which is being generous. On top of this, the small things (like no water on the table???). To top it off, the attitude of the owner to the patrons was astoundingly unprofessional. Between poor service, average, at best, food and an annoyingly overbearing to rude attitude displayed by the owner to his paying customers, We will never return to this restaurant and recommend others do the same. read more

Two hours to get our entrées. More drinks than usual to pass the time. Food was good, not special (which one might hope for considering the time waiting). A lot of apologies from our waiter. Well ...first visit with new restaurant... charming redo ...sophisticated change ... gracious host ... pleasant server...we split an app special - oyster mushroom wild mushroom delicious. Ordered rack of lamb (pink). Nice presentation- overdone ... bummer ... I didn't send it back since I'd then be watching the rest of my table eat . I did speak with our server who said that she would let the chef know .... We began with the special appetizer of foie gras mousse with fig preserve. The mouse was so light and smooth I was totally enchanted. The brioche toast was a bit of a disappointment and there was not enough for us to easily share. I was expecting toast points, but it was more like an average sliced bread, cut into triangles. Oh well. As I said the mousse was divine and I would get it again. The Sancerre we had was brilliant with the foie gras and the pinion soup. The wine could have been better chilled. And speaking of wine , we ordered 2 bottles, the Sancerre and a Cabernet Franc. The cab franc came to the table first (but after the foie gras and onion soup). The scotch was similarly late to the table but oh well. One of our party had a special scallops and saffron risotto. Fabulous! The short ribs were miraculous: deep mahogany brown with a flavor to match and the perfect texture. Steak frîtes, perfectly cooked with delicious fries. Coq au vin was rich and tender. And the magret (ordered rare) was cooked perfectly and the sauce was sublime-the perfect taste of orange without going overboard and a delicate frothy texture. We were seated in the back room and love the intimate feel and the warm, flattering light. read more

I had the best onion soup I've ever had here, unfortunately the rest of the meal was straight downhill. After the soup, I was served a tepid (not warm) duck breast on cold wild rice. The coq au vin my wife ordered was three drumsticks in a bland sauce. Terrible bizarre service which seems to originate in the circus ringmaster who owns this place, luckily we weren't one of the two tables the owner hovered over, like flies over cow manure, babbling nonsensically and repeating the table's order to the waitstaff again and again. One of my top 5 food experiences in the last decade. We went on New Year's Eve, and the food was absolutely to die for. Can't believe this gem exists here. The filet mignon was truly magical. Probably the best steak I've ever had in my life, and I am no stranger to amazing steak. Between the expert menu and the fact that Hudson Valley has incredible farm fresh foods, this place is a 10. Unwelcoming. Downright rude. Blatantly insulting. My party was served by an arrogant young man who said he is the son of the owner. It was a hot day. We arrived on our bicycles. Before ordering our intended - and much anticipated - appetizers, entrées and wine, we chose to sit outside on the verandah and cool off with sparkling mineral water and cold beer. I am a bilingual Canadian (Anglo not Franco). I spend considerable time annually in Bretagne at a family home, where my French has been polished, yet is nevertheless imperfect. The haughty server unabashedly said, "Canadians don't know how to speak French; it isn't even the same language!" ... yet he understood our entire conversational exchange. Insulted, we chose to leave. Upon paying, I pointed out that the French name of a dinner entrée was spelled incorrectly on the menu, and he actually agreed. The imported beer was charged at a higher price than that of the menu, which I overlooked. We will never know how the food is because we will not return after such an audacious affront. read more

We were coming into the area to meet up with some friends, driving through the beginning of Red Hook on our way to another restaurant when we passed this little gem. So we turned around and said lets check it out, which we did, got a table (we were on the early side around 5:30). Alaine seated us in the small room with bar in front and Cherise took our drink orders. Dinner was wonderful. I had ordered French Onion Soup and was brought the Salmon Tartare...which I had considered so I just kept it and it was wonderful...salmon and smoked salmon pieces in a creme fraiche with cucumber and pea shoots. Then they brought the gratinee and apologized for the mix up. We both had duck, I had the breast and my wife had the confit with lentils and both were excellent. Nice wines too. The front room was a bit noisy, but small room. Service was very good. No room for dessert but all looked wonderful too. The only downside was they did charge me for the Tartare, which I did not order...but hey $14 was worth it and I did not complain (figured I would have spent that on dessert so no worries). A great find...like most in the area do not book to capacity as not enough servers. Nice porch area front and side of building. Thanks for finding us! read more

I have never written a restaurant review on TripAdvisor or Yelp but I am so upset about my experience at Brigitte. Hands down worst service I think I've ever experienced at what is supposed to be a nice restaurant. Arrived and owner had me standing and waiting to be seated for 20 minutes. Kept passing me and saying he would be with me momentarily. Once I was seated he had me change tables when I was settled. After I changed tables, no one had even brought me a menu or water after 30 minutes. So I asked a waiter for a menu. Once I decided what I wanted, I had to flag down the owner to come over and take my order. I asked if the Chardonnay was dry and oaky and he hurriedly said yes. It was not. He then took my order. I ordered a Caesar salad and the branzino. A waitress came a reasonable amount of time later and said we don't have the Caesar salad so we made you this other salad. The other salad looked very unappetizing, was drenched in dressing and was definitely not what I would have ordered if someone had come over and said we are out of Caesar salad, is there something else we can get you. I called the waitress over and told her I did not want the alt salad. She said she would check but was sure they could remove it from my bill. I said considering it was not an item I ordered, they better remove it from my bill. The owner then came over and offered me another appetizer. I said I was just going to stick w the branzino at this point. He offered to comp my wine and apologized. The branzino came shortly after. It was decent, definitely not great. The owner once again told me he wanted to comp my wine. He then sat down and told me a whole sob story about being understaffed, told me he ran multiple Michelin starred restaurants in Manhattan before this, etc. When I got the bill, I was charged for the wine. I paid the bill and left. The owner ran after me once I was in the car and apologized for charging me for the wine. Didn't offer to refund me for the wine. Invited me to come back anytime and ask for him and promised he would take better care of me. I told him I would not return and told him he had a sub-par restaurant with abominable service. If you want semi decent food with absolutely atrocious service, feel free to go here. But if you have any standards, avoid at all costs. read more

I was so excited a French restaurant was nearby. We decided to try it tonight. The food was delicious. The girls so sweet!!! The OWNER, however was a DRUNKEN ASS. He was so RUDE!! We were sitting on the porch outside and when it got dark, the bugs descended upon us. My daughter was extremely stressed. There were bugs in her hair. The owner came over and my hubby asked to turn the light off above us. The owner said you are very demanding for a guy. My husband said nothing but looked surprised. The drunk owner then went on to say I'm French and sarcastic. He asked my husband what are you? He said I'm Italian. The owner then said i hate Italians. The look of shock on my husbands face. That was probably the dumbest thing to say to a paying customer!!!! Unfortunately for the classless rude drunken owner it's a one n done for us. Head south a bit to rhinebeck. There's a wonderful French restaurant there with friendly staff and a much nicer owner. read more

My boyfriend and I visited Millbrook from Long Island for his birthday weekend. We found this place and decided to take the little drive and try it out. From start to finish this little French Bistro nailed every dish and all steps of service. For starters I had the french onion soup and my boyfriend had the Octopus. Both very well presented and tasty. For mains I had the Risotto and my partner had the roasted Duck. both beautifully presented and extremely well cooked. The small kitchen can be seen from the restaurant floor and only 3 chefs managed to serve a full restaurant with high quality food. The wine list is fantastic and we got a bottle of the 2018 Bordeaux. Dessert was just as good with me getting the Crème Brûlée and my partner getting the French toast with vanilla ice cream. All round a 5 star meal with a 5 star service. The server Alex had fine dining service down to the book. One of our best dining experiences. Their ads tout their 'authentic' French Bistro cuisine and wine pairings, so I was very much looking forward to giving the new place a try. Unfortunately, the experience did not live up to expectations. My 3 star rating is generous. A starter of mushroom risotto was quite good, but the salmon tartar was overly acidic and clearly marinated too long as the fish was a gray-beige color. I suspect it was left over from the day before. The salmon main course also left a lot to be desired. The fish was OK, and the accompanying pesto sauce was a nice, bright green making for a visually stiking presentation, but it had almost no flavor. The duck breast was worse; a generous portion, but it was not cooked as ordered and was very tough. As for wine, their wine list is unexpectedly quite limited, especially by the glass. As I recall their wasn't a single red burgundy offered. The service also was perfunctory; the staff spent more time talking to each other than attending to their customers. No reason then for a return visit, as there are other French restaurants in the area that are much better. read more
