After many years of enjoying Savona's, it pains me to say I now look for other options instead of here. And when I leave each time, I now say "why did I come here, I will never come back." This review is not about one bad visit, it's about coming back to a favorite local restaurant repeatedly only to be disappointed over and over again each time - it keeps getting worse. Service is really bad unless you get a rockstar like Danielle, who is actually good at her job. The bar crowd has become unwelcoming, with some folks wearing clothes with expressions that have no place in public. The food quality has plummeted and is now hit and miss - yes you can still get the occasional delicious app or entree, but typically it's going to be a letdown. The pizza last night was disgusting, my food came out in the wronger order despite telling the waiter 3 times what I wanted, and we were essentially ignored all night. Drinks took forever. Food took forever. Waiter walked by our table dozens of times but never asked if we needed anything (we did - more drinks). We left disgusted and I find myself once again asking myself: why bother coming here? There are better options in the area - go somewhere else. read more

I was in the Hudson Valley area with my husband recently and we went out to dinner with our cousin who lives in Saugerties. She is a dietician, so we relied on her suggestion to have dinner at Savona's Trattoria & Bar in Red Hook. They have three other locations. It was a Sunday night, and there were not a lot of restaurants that stay open beyond 8pm. When we arrived, the parking lot was full, but it's a large restaurant and we were seated right away. Service was efficient and good, but it seemed to be rather perfunctory instead of personal. But that's okay, we were not looking to make new friends, just to enjoy a good meal. And Savona has a wonderful menu with many reasonably-priced choices. We all ordered cocktails. I had the Basil Limoncello Spritz--it was refreshing and subtly delicious. We ordered the Eggplant Napoleon Stack--a truly unique and delicious appetizer to share, or big enough for a meal. I ordered the Gorgonzola Pear Pizza--another unique and delicious dish. We were too full for dessert, but we had a wonderful time. Savona's is great for a special night out, or the menu is varied enough to bring the family. Came to a late lunch with a friend and ordered the lasagna. Delicious. It was cheesy and saucy. I ordered the special where you get salad or soup, an entree, and dessert. I got the escarole soup with white beans and sausage. The soup was great. Nice and hot and flavorful. The lasagna mentioned earlier and the dessert to go because I was too full at a really reasonable price of ~$23. The service is great. It gives me no joy to write this, as I live nearby and want local businesses to succeed, but this was one of the worst meals my family has ever had. Yes, ever. The pasta was cooked so far past a recommended time it was baby mush. The bolognese sauce on top made my 18-year-old daughter spit it out into her napkin. I've had far better frozen pizza than what was put in front of us. The salads were fine - nothing special, but at least edible. Fried calamari had clearly been hanging around in the freezer for a while, though at least it was crispy. The staff is indeed lovely, as the reviews attest. Our company had a happy hour here and the food provided was delicious! I decided to treat myself to a take out dinner and ordered the Carbonara with gluten free pasta. My food was ready when I was ready to leave. The workers were kind enough to put gluten free pizza crust, plain, with olive oil dipping sauce in place of the breadsticks. I appreciated this! I don't know if this takes street cred from my review but one of my beefs with the Portland food scene is a lack of good Italian food. So on this trip I was determined to have good Italian food. This definitely scratched my itch and affirmed that Portland's Italian food does in fact suck. The starter with the bread. Oh man. What a showstopper. The oil and herbs and everything was just so awesome. I had a late lunch so it was hard to hold back on the bread but it was definitely necessary to hold back. I got the sunday sauce. Exactly what I had pictured when I imagined good Italian food coming in my life. The meatball was tender and tasty. Same with the sausage. I love that there was not a lack of sauce. The breadsticks are out for his world and I happily ate too many. I enjoyed my main dish, which was a special Tuscan salmon, but I did find both my main and the appetizer were super creamy, cheesy and heavy but didn't have as much depth of flavor/spice/variety. I love butter and heavy cream more than most but I ended up super full quickly and just wanted more on my palate. I will say the whole table left full and happy! When I visit friends in the Boston suburbs, we have a go-to restaurant for what we call "Italian Comfort Food" - a few variations on the conventional, nicely prepared with good proportions. My friends will then say, "We need to find a similar restaurant at which to dine when we visit you." I now consider that dilemma solved. These friends called the menu at Savonna's "Italian with a foodie twist." They're certainly doing something right, considering they're only a few weeks away, as of this writing, from opening their third restaurant in the Hudson Valley. They have a nice wine list, but we're saving selections from that for "Wine Lovers Wednesday" when they're half price. The cocktail selection is limited but equally good. All the appetizers on the menu looked enticing, but we opted for a special for the evening, bacon-wrapped scallops. Our only problem with these is that we got an odd number of them (sadists, forcing us to either cut the last one up or resort to Rock-Paper-Scissors yet again). The blue cheese dressing on the salad that came with my meal was probably the cheesiest I've ever had (that's a good thing). And then there were the entrees, which came out surprisingly fast for a busy Saturday evening, with perfectly seasoned meats and fresh tasting sauces. We got top-notch service too. Even though it was a damp, wet, evening, we opted to sit in the closed-off porch with the torches, for which the staff worked double-time to maintain them. Came to Savona's after hitting a farm nearby. I've heard about the place for years so was excited to try it. Got seated quickly, however service was slow at first as none of the waitresses could figure out who was covering our table. Didn't appreciate this given we had 2 small children at the table, but thankfully we got it sorted. Nobody was in the mood to drink even though the menu looked great. Actual waitress was nice and accommodating when it came to the kids. The garlic breadstick they give up front are addicting. We were on a schedule because of the kids and thus couldn't do an appetizer, so these were a good substitute. In true brunch fashion, I got the bucatini carbonara. This was perhaps the most rich version of the dish I've ever had. It wasn't the traditional version, including smoked bacon, peas, shallots, and a parmesan cream sauce, however it was thoroughly enjoyable and had the right flavors. It was just a lot to the point that it was hard to finish, both in terms of size and richness. I find this to be a good problem to have. Everyone else loved their food as well. I have gone to Savona's several times and always have had some of the best meals around. Everyone is extremely friendly and the interior is just amazing. A real hidden gem. This is that place where you can order something new and it will become a favorite item, as I don't think I ever had anything that wasn't outstanding and delicious. There was one time In September specifically where the service was something that many five star restaurants could only dream of. Our server Bridgette walked that fine line of attentive and annoying which in my mind is hard to do. I swear she must be a mind reader as when I thought I needed another drink or anything there she was just checking up, but definitely not hovering. Three separate dining rooms are nicely laid out connecting to two large outdoor seating areas. Menu is typical Italian offerings. They have a limited but well chosen draught beer selection. Service was very good. We split a Meatball Parmesan sub with hot peppers. The bread was homemade (fantastic), and so was the salad dressing.
