This is Italy.... We absolutely loved the relaxing vibe for lunch and the food was beyond our expectations. The atmosphere is very modern Italian with both the restaurant side and the cafe side. The calamari is by far the best I've had anywhere in the world, and that includes the seaside villages of Italy. The paninis are exactly what you would get over there versus the US overloaded and smashed "sandwiches ". If you're in the area, I recommend stopping in for lunch but if you want to go to dinner it's probably best to make a reservation. No photos were taken because I was too busy stuffing my face and enjoying the Negroni. Enjoy!! read more

A gem in the hidden gem of Tivoli. Thank god we listened to some fancy, cultured people we met in Hillsdale instead of trusting the occasional savage insanity of Yelp restaurant reviewers... We've been here a few times - and have brought out-of-town guests and it's always a hit. They make an exceptional cocktail and the kale salad is superb. Also loved the brown butter and sage ravioli, the eggplant Parmesan and all of the other pastas we tried. Definitely in our Hudson Valley Top 5 restaurants. Ambiance and staff are great. read more

I was quite upset for the charge of 18% for fair wages for the staff, front and back. You can leave additional for waiters if you choose which only goes to the servers. In small writing on second page of bill this is stated easily unnoticed. This should be clearly stated by the server before ordering. I did leave additional fee for server that I felt shamed into. Horrible will never return. This establishment is well patronized and on the expensive side with small servings and should not need help paying a fair wage. read more

I appreciate that the restaurant responded to my previous review. I well understand the need to adequately compensate front and rear of house staff and I understand the associated 18% fee in the restaurant. However, this should be presented as an alternative to tipping and it should be made clear that patrons are welcome to tip in addition to the fee, but it is not expected. Finally, I should not have been charged the fee for the groceries that I purchased and I would appreciate being compensated for this charge the next time I visit the restaurant. I saw this restaurant on a list of places to eat in the Hudson Valley, so I was excited that I could make a last-minute reservation for 6:30pm at 5:45pm. We were able to get seated at 6:15. The first thing that my friend and I noticed was that there were pretty much only white people dining here, which is probably normal for the area. Even though we only ordered an appetizer, two entrees, and dessert, we did not leave until 9pm; I'm not sure if this is typical of the service, but we waited a very long time to order and to get our food. The waitress also took away our water after our entrees and we did not have any water at all for our dessert. It was very hard to get her attention for anything, so we just went without water. We still had a 2 hour drive back home, so the length of the dinner was not ideal. + Garlic bruschetta ($3 for 4 pieces) - 4/10 - The waitress did tell us that this was more like garlic bread than bruschetta and that there were no tomatoes, which I really appreciate. The bread was fine, but I mostly tasted olive oil and not much garlic on my piece. I used it to sop up sauce for my pasta. Overall, this was surprising because most Italian restaurants I go to serve excellent complimentary bread with olive oil. (Carbone surpasses everyone with their incredible complimentary bread, mozzarella, and sopressata). + Calamari with sauce ($18) - 7/10 - I don't think I've ever gotten this much calamari in one order in my life. The portion was huge, and it was quite good - well battered and fried. I wish there had been an option for half the portion and price, though, because it was impossible for my friend and I to finish this between the two of us. There's so much of it that the first half is still crispy but the rest just lost its crispiness after a while. There also was definitely not enough sauce for the amount of calamari. + Penne alla norma - 6/10 - The eggplant and tomato sauce were very well done, but the penne itself didn't taste homemade to me. I'm not sure where I got the impression that the pasta would be freshly made, but it tasted like boxed penne. + Seafood diavolo over spaghetti ($29) - 6/10 - I did like the spicy tomato sauce, but it tasted like tomato sauce with chili pepper flakes. It was not particularly nuanced. The seafood was very plentiful - several pieces each of clams, scallops, squid, mussels, and shrimp. However, three of the clams right on top of the pasta were completely closed and I had to ask for it to be re-steamed. The shrimp shells were hard to peel and the shrimp was not particularly tender, which suggests that they were overcooked. The spaghetti was also definitely not freshly made, and bordering on uncooked in terms of how al dente it was (but still edible). The portions were very generous, though, and I took 90% of it home (since I was full from of the calamari). + Tiramisu ($9) - 8/10 - This is one of the better tiramisus I've had in a while, and it was the main redeeming factor for this meal - it was very light and creamy, and not too sweet. I didn't love the chocolate chips on top (rather than cocoa powder) as I felt that the crunch didn't complement the tiramisu well. The portion was very large. It's also possible to buy an aluminum tray of this for $15 from the grocery section of the store, which is a fantastic deal. Overall, I would not recommend that people from NYC go out of their way for this Italian restaurant; the food definitely does not compare to my favorites in NYC. I also make my own fresh pasta so it is very disappointing for me to go to a well-regarded Italian restaurant to get boxed pasta. However, if you're in the area and you're very hungry after a long hike, this is not a bad option, and the tiramisu is quite good (with an option to take some home). read more

Giobatta is a wonderful gem of a restaurant tucked away in Tivoli. I had a great lunch - Italia panini (Caprese salad sandwich) with the hands down the best fries (thin, crispy, with a hint of rosemary. I paired it with a glass of Pinot Grigio, but their cocktail menu looks very interesting. The ambience is clean, modern and industrial. The front end staff consisted of one waitress, but she did a great job waiting on everybody and was very nice. I plan to go back again soon and try some pasta dishes. Update... went back for dinner and it was just as good! Penne arrabiata was chef's kiss. My husband loved his steak and they let us sub fries for the side dish. Can't get enough of those fries! Loved this spot. Went on a weekday for lunch with friends and ordered multiple plates to share. Definitely the way to do it! Calamari, Arancini, Bruschetta, Kale Salad, Caesar Salad, and the Penne all'Arrabiata. A small feast complimented by a few delicious cocktails. Service was pleasant and attentive and the ambience was ideal for our "girls road trip" vibe. Popped into the little market before leaving for some coffee and sweets (omg, the panna cotta!) to-go. It's unfortunate that other reviewers seemed to have had such a different experience as I really thought it was a gem! A typical Hamptons restaurant up near Rhinebeck. Cold greeting.. like they're doing you a favor to seat ya. Sky high prices. Mediocre food. The soft shell crabs especially egregious. Overcoated. Dry as a bone. Deep, deep fried and dumped on a plate over french fries, iceberg, tomato slices and Russian dressing? Was this whole tasteless mess dumped out of the fry basket? Its like a deconstructed Whaler from Burger King On the plus side, the crowd is nicer than Sag Harbor and the pastas and fra diavolo weren't bad. Note to restauranteurs and Hudson Valley chefs: we left the Hamptons for good reason. Please don't replicate that up here. read more

My cousin got married here years ago when it was a different restaurant. We decided to come back for lunch while we were in town one weekend. The restaurant layout is pretty much as I remembered it. There wasn't much of a crowd and we were seated immediately. We ordered a bunch of things to share: fried calamari, Caesar salad, eggplant parm, a couple of sandwiches. The fried calamari was great. Lightly battered, well seasoned and fried to perfection. Caesar salad was EXCELENT! Probably the best I've ever had. Flavors and textures were all on point. Eggplant parm was amazing. I've only ever enjoyed my own eggplant parm, as the ones I've had at restaurants have been disappointing. That was definitely not the case here. I honestly don't remember what sandwiches we got because by the time I got to those, I was already pretty full with the first 3 things I mentioned that were excellent. This is very much the type of restaurant I adore. Serious food in a casual, lovely, and relaxed setting with good attentive and professional service. I stopped in solo when I was nearby late in the afternoon on a Monday and was pleasantly surprised by a delicious meal, in a comfortable setting. I had eggplant parmesan, which was a superior rendition, and a modified caesar with (sadly stale) croutons. There were happy groups of luxurious seemingly neighborly diners, a couple with baby, and some solo diners. All well attended to. There are desserts, wine galore, and a full bar. A family member called to simply inquire about a panna cotta that was bought here, which was basically 2 weeks old according to the barcode. The owner started suddenly raging. SHOUTING and asking if there was mold --- no, but are you proud to serve non- fresh items at that price?? He proceeded by saying he was "getting very annoyed"*** and to "never come back again". Don't worry about that, we have been regulars since you opened but no more. Also we supported your business all through out the pandemic. CiAO!! Also I wouldn't let this one experience completely effect my rating of a local business. However after frequenting here enough (not much choice there are only 3 other restaurants in this town) and giving multiple chances, the food here is average at best. They charge high prices and can get away with it because of the tourism. And the vegan rating for this place is a zero, I had one "vegan" pasta dish that was naked with no sauce and some measly zucchini tossed together. I loved the restaurant when it was in Red Hook. It was much smaller and more intimate. I really want to like the new place in Tivoli so I continue to return, taking guests as it has such a great origin story. But alas, it is consistently so loud that you can't hear yourself think, even with a moderate crowd in attendance. The food is very good, the salads especially. I was surprised when I asked to have my eggplant Parmesan made into an entree with pasta that my pasta would have no sauce! In order to get sauce I would need to order the child size pasta. I think I'll just stick to takeout salad, if I'm in the area. read more

Such a disappointing experience. We came here on a Sunday for lunch. Mind you there were 4 tables of 2 people and 2 of them were already served their entree. The meal started off fine. One waiter took our drink order (gentleman and very friendly). But when it came time to order food our second server was robotic and cold. We ordered the carrot soup and the kale salad. Both were good. My penne arrabiata entree was terrible. Undercooked, practically hard, and the sauce tasted like ketchup packets...$24. Further, the service here was just bad. No one asked if we would like another glass of wine. I asked if there was fish in the salad dressing and never got a confirmation (I'm allergic). It took 20 mins to get a check with only 3 tables (one only having coffee). And, like many reviewers have mentioned, they add an 18% service charge - disincentivizing good service. This place, in Tivoli, reminded me of a Long Island Diner. Rude staff, untasteful atmosphere, like a take out joint. . . The bar faces the take out orders, it's not really a bar, it's just extra seating. Please revert to the old style. Oh, and the food, very middle of the road. Wonderful. After spending time in Italy, I always judge a restaurant by the quality of the egg plant Parmesan. This is one of my favorite meals, and often ruined by most Italian restaurants, not the case here, there's was the best eggplant Parmesan I've had since Assisi. That's a big compliment. Beyond that everything we had at this restaurant was wonderful, we enjoyed fish, bread with garlic, a wonderful palm salad. We could've eaten more but we're trying to stay thin. The interior is elegant bistro, comfortable but not pretentious. If I lived closer to this restaurant, I would not write this review because it would create problems getting into this place. Their meat platter was served with paper thin meats, amazing focaccia and Lardo. Yup they had lardo. Don't be shy give it a try. I live in NJ where indoor dining is still not permitted. This was my first indoor dining experience since the pandemic so this was a real treat and this place did not disappoint. The food is outstanding and is made fresh, in-house, and prepared perfectly. The place has a great vibe with a warm atmosphere but doesn't sacrifice its upscale dining experience. The dining room is simple and unassuming. During our recent dining experience here, we ordered the beef carpaccio over arugula appetizers which was outstanding. My entree was the linguini vongole: New Zealand cockles cooked in olive oil, garlic, chilies and wine ... the ingredient combination melded together perfectly making for a divine pasta dish. Everything was delicious from the wine, to the appetizers, and pasta dishes and the service was very friendly and professional. Great experience. Highly recommend. read more

I will not be going back to this restaurant for a variety of reasons. The restaurant was freezing, they need to turn up the heat so the environment is tolerable, and people need to stop coming in through the front door. During winter months, they should direct patrons to come in through the side door. The tables near the front door are drafty and cold. All three of us had to wear our coats during dinner. It took fifteen minutes to get a hot pot of water. Our server was new, and absolutely dreadful. She had no idea what she was doing. I feel that because you're automatically charged an 18% gratuity, that the servers feel they don't need to be attentive. She took one drink order and walked away, and we had to call her back for the other two people. The caprese salad was ice cold, the mozzarella and tomato were flavorless, and seemed like they it been sitting in the refrigerator for a long period of time. It should have been room temperature. The kale salads had to be remade because they were overly salted. The focaccia was stale. Our server was more interested in talking to the other people behind the bar. The only helpful person was the busser. Again, I think an 18% automatic gratuity disincentivized the staff. We will not be going back. If you go to this restaurant, bring a parka, hat, and gloves. read more

let me start by saying I'm an easy going person who reluctantly leaves negative reviews. Any restaurant can have an off moment, the owner doesn't have complete control over staff, whatever. To be brief the food was generally decent with the exception of the calamari which was pretty awful; breading over thin rubber bands. The drink order was off, wrong beer, which I ignored. When the main corse arrived we ordered a second round of drinks which never came. lingered a bit waiting for the drinks that never came until we caught the waitress, no apology. ordered desert and literally as they cleared it away we were informed they "needed our table"........we had been there 1:45 minutes with appetizer, mains and desert. When I pointed out that if our drink order had showed up maybe we would have been done the staff person just turned and walked away. To add insult to injury there was a built in tip of 18%, I consistently leave 25% or more. The experience ruined an evening. This just isn't what should happen in any credible restaurant. read more

Owners mistreat their staff and also pass off their mandatory service charge being "in lieu" of a tip yet provide customers with itemized receipts asking to provide tips which go to "only the servers on the floor". Awful business practice that goes against Section 196-d of the NYS Labor Law which "prohibits employers from demanding, accepting, or retaining, directly or indirectly, any part of an employee's gratuity or any charge purported to be a gratuity". I've been dining here for years and love the warm, authentic experience the owners so tirelessly offer their customers. Everyone knows that the service industry, among others, has taken a serious hit over the past few years and the staff here try hard to balance a high-paced environment with excellent service. If it's packed, they will tell you things might move a little slower. I appreciate that. The food is excellent, never disappoints and Chef takes great care in offering a true farm-to-table experience. Others may say it, but he really does it. I highly recommend it. Lastly, public service announcement: please be patient with restaurants, especially in more remote areas where staffing challenges are prevalent. I was so disappointed with the service here. The hostess was so rude over the phone and when we arrived at the restaurants we received terrible service. We were some of the only dinners at the time and still the waiter rarely came by, it took forever to put in our order. And our food took an hour to arrive. Finally got around to dining in-house at GioBatta on Saturday afternoon. Prior to that I only had a few takeout orders which were okay though generally speaking too salty. I stopped ordering takeout during the height of the pandemic when they imposed a mandatory 18% service charge on all takeout orders as well as the same percentage on in-house dining. More about that policy later. As the only person at the bar, I was "greeted" by someone who was either a manager, server or bartender, there was no way to tell. I say "greeted" because I don't know what else to call her reception. She did not say hello or welcome, did not introduce herself, did not ask if she could help me. She did not say anything. She just gave me a blank stare and raised her brow as if to command "Speak!" Very odd way to greet a guest. When I told her I'd like to see a menu she brought it and disappeared. A few minutes later a helpful young man appeared behind the bar, server number two, and answered a few questions about the menu. He was very considerate and I ordered the bucatini carbonara. He asked if I would like bread and I said sure. Soon after I ordered a very friendly server with a wonderful smile, server number three, appeared behind the bar to ask if I would like to place an order. Her name is Zoe and I almost felt bad having to tell her I had already ordered from one of her colleagues. So two out of the three servers I'd met in that brief time were very good. I also got the feeling there was no designated bartender and that no one specifically had been assigned to me. This was going to be interesting. The bread was good. Unfortunately, I did not know until I saw the bill that I'd been charged for the bread. I might have ordered it anyway but still you like to know in advance if you are being charged for something. Especially since so many high-end restaurants in the Hudson Valley serve complimentary bread and olive oil or butter. I really wanted to like the bucatini carbonara as it's a dish I usually order if it's on a menu. Unfortunately, the pasta was quite a bit harder than al dente, more like seriously undercooked. The sauce was okay though not delicious. Not even close to the same dish served elsewhere. When I finished server number one returned and asked me if I'd like anything else (she does speak!) and I said just a box for my leftovers and the check. She replied it's gonna be a while because I have some other things to do first. Well she was not kidding about that. After waiting a while Zoe came by again and asked if I'd like my check and a box for the leftovers. It took her all of 60 seconds to complete that task. Zoe to the rescue. I looked at the check and saw that it had the entree, bread, mandatory 18% service charge added plus a separate charge for a sandwich-to-go which I had not ordered and which they did not bring. I don't know how that sandwich mixup occurred. I had mentioned to server number two when I placed my order that I might get a sandwich to go but will decide that after the meal. We never spoke about it again. So, don't forget to check your bill. I enlisted the help of Zoe again to straighten out my bill and remove the sandwich charge which she did. I had one more question about the bill and server number four was able to assist. How many servers do they have? Who is in charge? Who is my server? So what's with this 18% service charge for takeout orders? The same 18% added to bills for in-house diners? In several decades of dining throughout the Hudson Valley, nationally and internationally I've never seen such a charge before. I could understand a reasonable surcharge for takeout orders but the same amount you give a server who spends an hour plus running back-and-forth to your table and making sure everything is just right? Makes no sense. A service charge by definition is for service. I'm definitely in favor of paying staff more money. How about raising the prices on the menu? Do they keep prices artificially low by shifting some costs to takeout customers? If so, that's not fair to the customers. And it's not fair to their competitors. And by requiring an 18% gratuity of all in-house diners they disincentivize staff from providing good service (see server number one). I left more than the obligatory 18% but much less than I ordinarily give for excellent service. I suspect most regular diners have gotten more generous during the pandemic since we know it has not been easy for restaurant workers. It's unfortunate I had a bad experience because I live within walking distance and might have enjoyed becoming a regular there. One of my neighbors (who insisted I write this review--it's the only one I have ever written) asked me to mention she will not be ordering takeout until they change the service charge policy. Oh well, i'm sure she's not alone. Sorry, Zoe, you were the brightest star in a cloudy sky. My sincere appreciation for your excellent customer service! read more

After eating some amazing dinners at the wonderful Mercato Enoteca in Red Hook, which sadly is permanently closed, we were excited to try Francesco's new restaurant, GioBatta in Tivoli. We were pretty disappointed. The burrata and prosciutto appetizer was fine, though uninspired. Next we had a house salad which, according to the menu, has a lemon emulsion but came with a balsamic dressing - when we asked the server, she seemed blank, as if she didn't know what we were talking about. I asked to see a menu to make sure I wasn't crazy, and when I pointed it out she said she'd ask the chef but never returned with any explanation. Odd, as there was no balsamic on ANY of the salads on the menu. Our entrees (only 3 available) were the steak - tasty but not very tender- and chicken parmigiana - very run of the mill, like any ordinary Italian place. The other option would have been the grilled fish. GioBatta has a pretty, unadorned decor and friendly staff, but we were expecting awesome, as everything we'd ever had at Mercato was to die for, like being back in Italy.
