Whether Stone Soup is inspired by the well-known children's book or not, this small, super local restaurant+café on Broadway in Kingston, NY uses the best produce+ingredients+even salmon around. Country-chic style, cozy+dim feel and the black and white in-your-face white checkerboard floor make up the inside design. The only thing missing on an unseasonably cool August summer was a crackling log fire. Their menu, is the main catch here. The menu changes often(?) depending on what's in season. Go for the prepped veggies+proteins or order from the menu like I did. Their 'Specials' menu lists items you can tweak and their regular menu offers fixed items. I ordered from both. Hubs enjoyed the grilled chicken panini with Swiss+raw onions and mayo I picked for him. My mixed green salad with feta+walnuts+apples+cranberries was great on its own- but I added a grilled salmon piece for added protein. Purely wholesome. I hesitated using their provided balsamic 'dressing' for fear it might include any kind of mustard- but that sucker was a silky balsamic emulsion that made my entire salad come together- even drizzled it on my salmon. Food was Great !! Give two stars because Service: need to train employees not loudmouth talk inappropriate subjects and bash the company they are working for and not to go break come back high. Ambiance. Yes. It's gives off a lovely deli coffee shop vibe. Even though an employee was mad a customer ordered coffee. Employee yelled it very loud they are not a coffee shop. I'm OBSESSED with this place. Some of the best food in the Kingston area. I'm so upset I don't live closer. I work in Kingston but I'm not able to get out long enough on my break to get it as much as I want. It really is one of the best spots in the area that I've had so far. Their paninis and beet salad are so good I can't stop thinking about them. And I normally f**king HATE beets. The soup, seriously, I'd fist fight someone for a small cup of any soup they are cooking. My only issue is the weird hours. They close so early and it's such a shame because I'd get them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I went here on a rainy day seeking something nourishing and warm... This isn't the place if that's what you're looking for, unfortunately. I regret spending my money here, I would've rather not eaten. The service was not very welcoming, even when I let them know joyfully I'd never been there. The interior was stuffy and limiting, no ambience. And the food in the case is all cold and if you want it heated, they told me it's microwaved. Some may not be aware of the effects this has on the body and the overall quality of the food. :( I got mixed veggies with soup and I found a small Caterpillar on my kale salad. It happens, but with the very poor service in addition to the bland mediocre food, that didn't add to my experience. I will not be coming to this fancy gas station cafeteria food restaurant again, and if you're going to be eating out maybe choose somewhere more welcoming and tasteful :) read more

I just went to a party of a friend across the street who was celebrating his 55th birthday, along with two other people I think. The cake was huge, & very attractive - and I have to say that I have never tasted a cake like that that was so delicious. Real butter cream icing and between the light layers, & not too swee, & not that fake stuff that's so often is in more commercially available cakes. I am trying to force myself not to nibble anymore on the piece the hostess let me go home with. Womderful! read more

My second time there and although the food was good, the service was very unfriendly, really cold vibe and unwelcoming. Not a comfortable place to go into, much less eat, if I don't feel welcomed. This is my first negative review of any place I've been, but I have to write this one. As a caveat emptor to others. Myself and three friends made the trip based on a glowing recommendation. We like to try new restaurants and see new places. Although it was 1:05 pm it wasn't that busy. I knew what I wanted and ordered right away. Pastrami on rye it took 25 minutes to prepare and when it was "ready" it was ice cold! How long does it take to put a few slices of meat on bread? Add another 10 minutes for a hot one to be delivered. Glad I wasn't on a lunch hour break. The others ordered panini and a vegetable burger; theirs were ready long before mine. We sampled each other's lunches and soups. The chili had a little piquancy. Nothing to write home about. The veggie bean burger came apart once the cheese was gone. The Reuben was OK and the eggplant and provolone panino was fine. They received hot food. So naturally, they were happier than I was with the service, and quality of the food. I don't know what all the hype is about the place. Maybe others have given them 4-5 stars because its the only place around in that part of town. They did comp my lunch, but after all the aggravation and disappointment it was the least they could do to make up for it. Live and learn, but don't believe everything you hear! read more

This is my favorite place to grab lunch when I spend a day doing work at Monkey Joe Coffee Roasters. There is always a great diversity of meals that they can put together for me in a short time. Sometimes during work days I come by Stone Soup in the morning to get lunch and an afternoon snack for later. I had a lunch made by Stone soup at the master gardeners event out at SUNY Ulster. They bagged lunches for 150 people there was no confusion everyone got what they were intended to get it was amazing plus it tasted delicious. So much so that we decided to have them cater sandwiches for an event we were having here at the shop the next week. They made that's fantastic sandwiches cut them in quarters and delivered them on a Sunday so we didn't have to run into Kingston it was extremely helpful and really delicious sandwiches all went, the last one was given to the last arriver at the party. This was the most disappointing deli I have ever eaten at. The gluten free bread was comparable to cardboard and the sandwich was quite dry. I couldn't even eat the bread so I overpaid for some meat, cheese and lettuce and had to add my own condiments just to make sure it didn't get stuck in my throat. The drinks were overpriced and one of them was spoiled and sour. The garden salad was basic and and didn't even come with dressing. The broccoli salad was meh and after that I lost my appetite and couldn't even try some of the other items we ordered. We overpaid and were grossed out by much of it. Never again. read more

Great place. My mom and I stopped in because she eats healthy, and this is the place with the most choices for that sort of palate. I've always been a fan, but she was especially delighted because there were so many guilt-free picks. (and strawberry shortcake for me!) The first time I ordered from Stone Soup, I called and placed an order to pick up. The lady who helped me over the phone was very nice when I was looking for crab cakes. It seemed nice on the outside so I didn't mind walking in next time to pick up my food. I walked in and was immediately greeted by a stare from the woman ringing these two gentlemen up. The stare was that of "you do not belong here". The lady who helped me the last time came over and took my order and the other lady was still staring at me. Idc how good the food is, if you're going to be charging 8 bucks for a crab cake you need to smile and not act like my hairstyle is hindering your ability to treat me with respect. Let me start off by saying I hate Kingston. I reluctantly work here a few days per week and am usually pretty upset about it. The only reason I do not call in sick twice per week is because of Stone Soup Cafe. This place is amazing. First off, everyone who works here (I usually get lunch on Tuesdays/Thursdays) is super nice and helpful. I have both called in for pick-up and eaten there, each time they were very nice and efficient. I have ordered the garden salad with grilled salmon, the salmon wrap, the veggie panini, their vegetarian chili, various soups, avocado, hummus, and red pepper wrap and random specials. All of it has been amazing (I'm a pretty healthy eater who doesn't eat meat besides fish). In the nearby vicinity is a wings place, a hot dog place, and a dive bar. If you're not choosing to eat at Stone Soup over the other garbage then you're doing something wrong with your life. read more

We love this place! They consistently serve good, fresh good at a great price. A cafe and catering establishment, we usually go there to get sandwiches to go at lunch. Love the salmon wrap, the crab cake sandwich, their special turkey sandwich and the yummy roast beef with horsradish sauce. They had a special California veggie burger one day that was the best I've ever had... and I've had a lot of them! We've had Stone Soup cater 3 different parties for us, two holiday parties and one huge birthday bash, and again, incredibly delicious, high quality and impressive! Our party guests always, always, go on and on about the hors d'ouevres created by Gwen, the chef at Stone Soup: risotto cakes with marinara sauce, Asian chicken rolls with plum sauce, chicken satay with a peanut sauce that my friend Shaynee couldn't eat enough of. Oh, and then there was the huge array of bite-sized desserts, like mini cheesecakes, mini carrotcake with cream cheese frosting, lemon squares and these chocolate covered bon-bons that looked like they were made in a Parisian chocolate shop. For the birthday bash, Gwen made the most beautiful triple-chocolate birthday cake (I wish I had a photo to show you) that tasted just as good as it looked. Light with intense chocolate flavors. The cafe itself is casual and funky, designed for quick lunches or take-out, with meals served on paper plates with plastic utensils. But who cares? Went here for lunch the first time yesterday with a friend, based on the overwhelmingly positive Yelp 5-star reviews. They weren't kidding! Everything was outstanding, and prepared with sensitivity, plus you get the friendly service that's missing in most restaurants of this type. The soups were out-of-this-world. I ordered the loaded baked potato soup which I would highly recommend. Creamy with a touch of bacon, cheese, chives, and sour cream - perfect. My lunch companion ordered the New Orleans gumbo with shrimp, chicken, and sausage, which was flavorful, and complex. This place really lives up to its name. I then had the chicken salad with goat cheese, cranberries, apples, and walnuts - among the best salad entrees I've ever eaten - with plenty of grilled, marinated chicken breast on top of above average greens. I chose the cilantro-lime vinaigrette dressing, which was so good that I asked for more. My companion had the perfectly-fried sweet potato-encrusted catfish that arrived succulent, moist, and without an oily residue. With wild rice salad, and brussel sprouts - were we dreaming? Where else can you get an incredible, affordable lunch like this? One that satisfies your culinary appetite, and makes you feel really good, afterward? Stone Soup Food Company - that's where!!! We decided to sample some carry-out dessert, for later. When the food is this good, you know you should get some dessert to go. Chocolate raspberry cake, and coconut-lime pie. Easily equaling any dessert we've ever had, at any five-star restaurant on the planet. Yes, THAT good. We also had some of the Kheer Indian rice pudding, just out of curiosity. Dine or Ditch? Dine... Let he who is without soup cast the first stone. Walking in, I was a bit turned off. It didn't really have a great coffee shop vibe. It looked a bit all over. They had cakes and salads in refrigeration units, but it didn't seem like much to show off. However, in my experience I learned why you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. While ordering I expressed some interest in the sweet potato fries to which the guy behind the counter responded with some boastful opinions. I decided to put these fries to the test and he was right. It was probably the best sweet potato fries I've ever had. They were quite sweet and fried nicely. They also gave me a red pepper aioli dipping sauce. That really added some zest and made me really reconsider how important a dipping sauce can be when it comes to sweet potato fries. Now, as far as the rest of food goes, I got a panini, John's House Roasted Beef. It was roast beef (obviously), roasted peppers, provolone cheese, fried onions, and chipotle aioli. It stood out to me right away and I, reportedly, am not the only one. They said it's their most popular choice. I could tell why at first bite. It was a delicious panini, well prepared, and sized perfectly. I was full after, but I didn't feel disgusted by how much I ate. I always like when a place makes an appropriate sandwich and prices it accordingly. The takeaway from all this is that I can't sit here and honestly say it's the best panini I've ever had (and I would imagine that's what I would say about any of their meals), but I can say it's very good and if you're passing by this is a place to stop for a bite. If it were local for me I could see this being a regular joint. Also, just a tip... they have a "rewards" card where (I believe) every 6 times you spend $5 you get $5 off your next meal. I felt like I was dining inside of a hospitality tornado... Overall, soup and quiche were good but it the entire experience felt chaotic. I get it, lunch is busy but it's tough to want to return during that time.. Everyone was rushing around, phone was ringing and it was obvious they were understaffed. Also the layout created so many bottlenecks and it was confusing to figure out how to order, where the menus were, silverware, etc.. I would recommend but not during lunch time unless they seriously consider revising their process to ensure they are prepared to accommodate the rush. read more

Gwen and her marvelous crew catered our 50th wedding anniversary party (for about 85 guests or so) almost 2 weeks ago. Our guests are still raving about the food and our family and friends are good cooks. They did everything--appetizers, entrees, coffee and dessert bar and it was all delicious. Fresh ingredients, lots of choices and a helpful staff. My husband dreamed that night of the Moroccan meatballs and I found him rummaging through the refrigerator looking for them. The team running Stone Soup really care about their food. I had them prepare catering for 55 people and requested grab-n-go sandwiches. They curated a variety of sandwiches and wraps, as well as side dishes, running the gamut from vegan to omnivore. They made it clear that they roast all their meats in-house except the ham. Their vegan sandwiches and wraps included: roasted vegetables with cranberry chutney; portobello mushrooms with spinach, tomato, and caramelized onions; grilled vegetables with baby spinach in a balsamic reduction; and rice and beans with black bean hummus. Our vegan crew members were in heaven. The omnivore sandwiches and wraps included: turkey with cheddar and cranberry chutney; roast beef with caramelized onions, lettuce and tomato; their "Apple Jack" grilled chicken with bacon, monterey jack cheese and apples; curry chicken salad; sliced pork with pineapple-mango salsa; Italian mix; and salmon. Side dishes ranged from: vegan kale salad with sunflower seeds, shaved red onions and raisins; vegan sesame noodles with peanut sauce, scallions, and black and white sesame seeds; vegetarian beet salad with sour cream, red wine, vinegar, honey, and fresh dill; and a broccoli and bacon salad. Stone Soup is a great spot that really stands out for Kingston and the surrounding area. Why? 1. Honest and simplicity: Gwen, the owner, opened Stone Soup three years ago to provide wonderful, tasty, fresh, and locally-sourced (as much as possible) food at affordable prices. That's the formula. And, it's the reality across the menu. 2. Expertly prepared and delicious foods. Gwen has been in the business for many years working in restaurants like Bear Cafe in Woodstock and many others around Ulster County. I had lunch here twice in two days. I tried three soups: - A 'beef stroganoff' had just a very light touch of cream with fresh chopped mushrooms and beautifully seasoned lean beef - A "tuscan lentil" was wonderfully hearty but without any cream. Just broth based and packed with healthy lentils and seasonings. Really good. - A "florentine" was maybe my favorite with fresh tomato, spinach or another green, chicken and seasonings. They were serving a moroccan beef special while I was there which looked amazing but I just had salads. The salads were fab--large and not overwhelmed by the lettuce as so many places do to save money. These had generous scoops of house-made egg salad, line caught tuna salad, fresh sliced avocado, red onion, carrot, tomatoes (small grape ones probably because the larger tomatoes are currently not in season) and fresh mixed greens. Really delicious with the homemade dressings they include. The menu is much more extensive that what I tried with many vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options along with some really tantalizing baked goods like brownies, cookies, etc. 3. Quality. Probably the most important thing to highlight. This place is serious about making its food affordable; think I spent $10-$15 for big lunches. But they are at least as--and probably more--serious about the quality of all produce, fruits, grains and proteins. The store front is pretty non-descript and, were it not for yelp, I'd probably never have even gone in when in the area. But so glad I did--this is very good food. 4. Friendly. Genuinely so. Gwen is a wonderful person, happy to answer any and all questions. When I was deciding between two of her soups, she insisted I try both and brought me two generously sized sample cups. I had my dog with me and she was as nice to him as she was to all the customers inside. Stone Soup deserves a lot of business. It's a catering business as well as the cafe. Went there 2x this past week for the seafood bisque. The first time it was yummy, but there were a few shrimp tails (not attached to the shrimp) in the soup! Yuck, not a nice surprise when eating soup. Decided to give them a second try. I called in and ordered a bowl of bisque. When I arrived they had a cup and not a bowl ready for me. I pointed this out and nothing was done. Sadly, there were shrimp tails in my bisque again, so I guess it is better to have had a cup size than bowl size. Also the quiche I ordered- which they microwave to order- was still cold. Won't be going again anytime soon. read more
