Shadow 66 - French onion soup

You will find an elegant bar as you enter. Then the tables with very comfortable seats. The lighting is green, which is great on your eyes! None of that bright florescence light. From the seating in the cozy corner to each item we ordered was delightful. The mushroom soup was the soup of the day. It was a very earthy soup which I loved, the French onion soup was on point very delicious. Hands down everything was wonderful. Recommend looking up the times and dates as they are open short periods of time and they do recommend reservations. So if you're traveling down that way stop on in and visit the crew and enjoy a tasty meal!

The place is known for its collection of antique cars both inside and out. It has a fun feeling and service if first rate. There were still plenty of solid options from eggs benny to salad, sandwiches, soups and entrees. At this time of year the garden area is open and quite lovely. We started with French onion soup, the soup de jour- mushroom, and mussels in a saffron cream sauce which came with fries. All three were beautifully prepared and excellent. Then we moved on to the house burger which our son said ranked in the pantheon of truly excellent burgers. He went for the cheese, bacon and lettuce, tomato....we all took bites. Yum. The fries that accompanied it were cooked to perfection. A little crisper and better than the first batch that cane with the moules. Pan-Bagnat- imagine salad nicoise sandwich but ooooo so much better. It was on focaccia with a generous portion of tuna - house mayonnaise - black olives and fresh tomatoes. Oh my. Last dish was the grilled king salmon in a citrus glaze served with mash potatoes and byaldi - Thomas Kellers gorgeous stacked ratatouille. This whole composition was a work of art and perfectly cooked. An extra side of ratatouille completed the meal. No room for dessert. But next time we will leave room for profiteroles. We will be back!

Traditional fine dining in a beautiful old building with thoughtful, attentive service…read more Yelp prompted me the other day to write about a business for which I'm grateful, and the Horned Dorset certainly qualifies. I've had several amazing meals there, but I was especially delighted that they were open on Thanksgiving. We often host big friendsgivings, but it just wasn't happening this year, and we were delighted to have some other options for me, my partner, and my partner's mother. Dinner started off with, always, their cheese souffle spread and house-made crackers. The first course had several choices, including an awesome gnocchi, with perfect texture and potato flavor; meatballs with risotto, also tasty; and lobster chowder, which got raves although I didn't try it. The salad that followed was nice. The main course included tender and juicy turkey, a mind-blowing potato dauphinoise, dressing, a smallish helping of green beans, and further vegetables and sides. We all took home at least another meal's worth of leftovers from the supper, and I'm a hearty eater. The deserts were similarly wonderful, including a very flavorful pumpkin cake and two other options. The Horned Dorset always delivers[*], but I especially appreciated the staff being willing to work on a holiday to provide us with such a lovely dinner. And super-attentive service to a room full of happy diners. [*] And they deliver in another way -- I have not had their to-go meals, but my partner raves about them.

Although Poughkeepsie has a decent variety of excellent restaurant options, there aren't a lot of upscale places to select from. We opted to book reservations for Brasserie 292 for a Saturday night. When we arrived, we were nearing the end of the dinner rush. We were sat right away, unfortunately it wasn't all too romantic being sat in the middle of the restaurant but understandably the restaurant is on the smaller side. The waiter was attentive, and addressed any of our questions about the menu, even hunting down the bottle of pinot noir we ordered. We opted to start off our night by splitting a half-dozen oysters which came with their in-house hot sauce, and an order of pouple, which was cooked to perfection. For our entrees we selected the red wine braised lamb shank and the dry aged prime NY steak. Since sides for both entrees were not mentioned on the menu, we also ordered sides - wild mushrooms, brussels sprouts and crispy smoked peewee potatoes. Overall the food was excellent and I'm still dreaming about the mushrooms. If we lived locally, would we go back, maybe but overall we had a great experience. Since this was an upscale restaurant, I opted to not photograph our meals and enjoyed being present in the moment.
