Unique place in kind of a bland town. Place is always buzzing with business and energy. Diverse menu has something for everyone and it's all edible. Try those buffalo chicken rolls! Service usually stands out with high marks for speed and attentiveness. Attached microbrewery produces flavored beers which are usually poor man's versions of whatever ale or lager they're based on, but they have a decent selection of imports, however they lack Hacker-Pschorr! Substitutes Hoegaarden and Blue Moon always available. The place is a bit pricey as it has no real competition in the area outside of the boring Applebee's and Friday's chains. Great atmosphere and well thought out decor. Restaurant becomes a decent bar after 10pm as well. read more

Really one of my favorite restaurants in the area. A very large variety of food and drinks! It's a great place for a group of people as well. The only issue I have ever had is you have to be careful of the times you go if you're looking just to sit down and eat, especially if your kids are with you. The bar is large and open and it gets LOUD in there and the voices carry very well in there. Great food though! read more

When I'm wrong, I'll admit it! My girlfriend wouldn't agree, but I'm doing it with this review. We went back to brickstone the other night and had dinner. Figured I'd give it another try. I got the smoked Gouda burger and I was impressed. Very tasty burger! And their fries were awesome as well. They have that perfectly crunchy breading on them. My girlfriend, despite her best efforts to order the same thing we disliked from our first time, ordered the jambalaya. We were returning home from Chicago in the evening when we opted to stop for dinner. After a couple of false starts at locations highly rated but sparsely populated. This is a common occurrence when traveling and choosing restaurants via yelp. That was not the case here and the full parking lot brought long wait times to mind. Fortunately, that was not the case and we were seated immediately. The service was only average or slightly better. The server appeared friendly but disinterested. I ordered iced tea and had to ask later for sweetener I ordered the smoked Gouda burger which was excellent once I removed the seemingly inappropriate red peppers. Fortunately, the were whole and easy to remove. My only comment here was that the serving size was much too large. I believe the burger patty could have been reduced by 2-4 ounces and still been a good value at the price point. Other than that, it could easily make my top five for best burgers on my lifetime. One other note, my companion ordered one of the house beers. It was excellent and did the menu description justice. Tuesday would be a good day for beer fans as the "tall" (23oz) is the same price as a pint. It would have been good to know from the menu that beer flights were available to allow sampling the apparently fine selection. Taking the time to write a review due to outstanding service. Specifically, yelp said the place is loud (which it is, very), so I booked a reservation for a large party in the dining room. They were a little behind and offered our party to sit in the bar, to be seated faster, which they did. Unfortunately, it was unbearably loud; so I approached the manager/front desk and explained our situation, and they brought us apps and drinks that we ordered, and allowed us to occupy our table in the bar until a table was free in the dining room...no down time. This was extremely accomodating, and everyone involved acted like it was no big deal at all. As everyone says, it's solid, bar food. Nothing ground breaking, but it's head and shoulders above TGIfridays which is essentially it's only competition. It is extremely busy, which is testament do just doing something solid and consistenly is a good business model. My brother got the filet which had fresh mashed potatoes, pretty serious. Beers - hefe: watery. Cherry whatever: tasted like beer and grenadine, the net effect is more like a beer cocktail, not really a beer. stout: solid. To the management: props to your staff for the aforementioned service, and what you're doing, it's obviously working out well for you. It's a feat to run that many tables at once. Acoustics: I don't know if the sheets hanging from the ceiling are there for light, but they don't do anything for acoustics, if that is your intention. Brickstone is great. The beer is very good. I'm particularly fond of the light and the cherry ale. The growlers are a good deal, too. The menu has great variety and I have yet to be disappointed by anything I've ordered. Also, GET THE CHEDDAR POTATO SOUP. It's one of my favorite soups anywhere. read more

Great food. Maybe a little too many items on the menu, but with that said, the food is great. I guess they can handle the variety of items very well. They are a local micro brewery and I like some of their varieties. To be fair to Brickstone, I haven't sat down and sampled all of the varieties that they brew. The quality of the food here is very disappointing. For such a successful operation (you can't get near this place on Friday and Saturday nights, and the new brewery being constructed down the road indicates they are making money hand over fist) you'd think the owners could invest in decent food products. I just finished a grilled chicken salad with wilted lettuce and bacon bits that were so porky they were almost inedible. How do you screw up bacon bits? By ordering cheaply from food wholesalers. Recently, I tried fish tacos here and had to send them back. The fish used was disgusting, like something caught out of the Kankakee River and tossed in the freezer a year before. The meatloaf is a greyish slab of mystery meat. Jambalaya is rice and smoked sausage seasoned heavily with MSG. Your best bets here are sandwiches, burgers, appetizers and pasta. Don't venture into the seafood or special entrees, or you'll be disappointed. Steaks are decidedly mediocre. Eating here with friends or on a date is a waste of time - the restaurant is ridiculously loud, which makes dinner conversation impossible. Sure, the craft beers are excellent. But don't expect a decent meal to go with them. That's too bad, because it's not like the restaurant is struggling to keep the lights on. read more

I would give this place 5 stars if they consistently had ALL of their beers ALL of the time. The food has been delicious every time we come but we are considering not returning until their brewmaster figures out how to keep a supply of their beers on tap. Maybe the owner should consider getting him/her some help. Tonight we came in and out of the 8 beers listed on the menu at the table they were out of 5. Why have the menu on the table??? The last 3 times we have come in we just automatically say " what do you have" instead of asking for something and being told they are out of it. Hopefully it picks up soon. read more

Can't serve beer because the lines are being cleaned. The sign says BRICKSTONE FREAKIN BREWERY! ...and you can't serve your own beers? I guess they wanted me to take a good long sober look at their establishment and make my first Yelp review. Set aside the fact that I am pissed about the beer. The place has really gone down hill. This was our third and last trip here. Last time I visit that dump. Dining area looked UNCLEAN and dumpy. They have really managed to turn a top notch establishment into a $#!+ hole. Window blinds on many of the windows had slats broken out. Wife's menu was handed to her with mystery liquid all over the inside of it. My menu looked like it had been in service for years without being wiped clean. They may or may not be doing a good job with brewery(I will never know). They couldn't even serve their own beers. The food wasn't as good as I remembered. Just, OK maybe? ...but definitely not good. I would put this on your list of places to avoid. Go to 3Floyds, Tribes Alehouse, Revolution Brewing, or even Burger King and a stop at the liquor store would have been a better experience. read more

I will compliment the variety of the menu, not the execution, just the idea. The Oatmeal Stout stands out amongst the brews. Compliments end at the bar though. You might order a burger to go, a situation in which little can go wrong. Eating in the car is an alternative worth trying given the consistently poor service. My first bad experience was credited to our waitress. Being on a date, in the afternoon, I was asked to sit at the bar! I was left with a bad taste for the rest of the meal. With these expectations, I was not disappointed. After multiple errors and "miscommunications" , the waitress asks to split the check! For a two person party! We left ASAP, thankful my date did not overlook the bay leaf hiding in her soup. On other occasions I've had more lacking service and over-cooked proteins. I've been going to Brickstone since the beginning. Thankfully I never gave up and they have continually improved. First the food and service. My go-to here is the French Onion Steak Sandwich. It is divine. Nice cut of meat and onion straws on a roll slathered in garlic butter. The jambalaya is also solid and the portion size is huge. Lots of meat and seafood in it! Could easily feed two. I've had the black and blu burger which was very tasty and generous with with the blue cheese. The jalepeno burger was disapointing in it wasn't much more than velveeta like cheese and jalepenos. Now the beer. At first the beers were barely drinkable. Now there are beating Zombie Dust for gold metal at the GABF? I question that, but they have gotten incredibly better. Their pale ale, the GABF gold medal winner is a surprisingly good ale. Smooth and hoppy. Very crisp, great beer to eat with. The Golden Promise is an English Style IPA and another very good brew. More rounded here, malty, and higehr ABV. The cherry wheat leaves a lot to be desired. In my opinion probably restaurant in the greater Kankakee area. read more

Some places excel at one thing, while failing at another. Such is the case with Brickstone. While the local brewery excels at their in-house beer choices, their food leaves something to be desired. This being the second visit for me and my companion, we weren't thrilled the first time some eight months earlier--I had chosen the pulled pork, whereas my companion had a buffalo wrap, along with fried pickles and bruschetta. By the time we got home, neither of us was feeling rather chipper. Our recent second visit, we decided to try the Brewpub pretzel with cold cheddar spread and roast beef, French onion soup, and the pulled pork sandwich, thinking maybe the first dissatisfying one was just a fluke. It wasn't. The sandwich didn't have any char or crispy bits like it would had it been barbecued or smoked. Instead, it felt like it had been sautéed in cooking oil, as well as the roast beef. The soup was quite salty, and had some sort of Frankenstein Swiss cheese knockoff draped over the bowl. There's no love in the preparation of the food. It feels very by-the-numbers and everything seems to be cooked heavily and oil (but well-drained).'if you're familiar with dining and say an Applebee's or a TGI Fridays, then you'll know the level of food quality you'll expect here. Their appetizer menu, while broad, is somewhat pricey for the choices. Some choices run as much as an entree. That being said, they are rather good at their brewing skills. One of their recent new brews has mango added, making for a smooth, refreshing beer with only 5.5% alcohol by volume; it felt reminiscent of German beers that were created for cyclists in days gone by after a hard ride and didn't want a heavy, intoxicating beer afterward. A marvelous concoction. Their skills at beer crafting earns them another star. In short, come here for the suds. Just don't expect the food to match the quality in your glass. read more
