I had one of the most humiliating and stressful solo dining experiences here on the night of July 31st, 2 nights ago (My bday). I'm sorry this review is kinda long, but I just need to put this out there because although this might be an isolated incident (for whatever reason), I want to document this experience in case it happens to anyone else. Speaking up was definitely the theme here, so here I am speaking up through a review too. Overall, I left feeling cheated so I need to hold this business accountable, especially because I know they don't really care.
I made a reservation just for me because I just wanted some good Italian food for my bday (they were aware of this) and the reviews seemed great and plentiful. This was also my first time in Boston. The menu seemed promising, too.
Unfortunately, right from the start they missed the mark with the food. I was served cold, tough and stale bread to start. I struggled to pull the slices apart. It was probably leftovers and not fresh. Ok, maybe the other food will make up for it, I thought. So, I ordered a caesar salad appetizer because my waiter mentioned it (Italian dude with glasses). Well, the entire salad was completely limp and underdressed (see pic) rather than crisp the way Bibb lettuce is supposed to be. The bitter radicchio under the mess of lettuce was not a welcome flavor after all that, either. At this point I should have left, because I was just served a limp $14 salad that I couldn't even finish, right after stale bread that I couldn't finish either. I felt stressed because at this point I knew I would have to try to explain in detail about why the food was not what I expected, when all I wanted to do was rave about the food and just enjoy a good meal!
I decided I had to make sure I speak up about it, but no one came back to the table for an unusually long time. My waiter moved on to other tables, even new customers at the tables right next to me. I don't remember at what point he had taken the main course order, but it was supposed to be ready. Finally the girl who had served the bread in the beginning (not my main waiter) asked me if I was done and I let her know the salad was limp (I showed her) and overall not what I expected, but she seemed confused. She took it away and I guess she told the other waiter, because a little after that he brought out a guy in a suit (manager?) which I didn't even ask for, so it was awkward.
I had ordered the pasta carbonara "special" on the waiter's recommendation. I waited, and waited... and waited. I should have timed it, but I'm pretty sure it was 40+ minutes from when I ordered with no update about it.
They finally bring the entree (again I waited a good 40 minutes for this) and it's a tiny, sad looking empty pasta dish served in a bowl/plate thing. It looked and tasted like those tiny frozen dinners that you cook for 4 minutes in the microwave. It was salty, very al dente (I was never asked how I like it cooked), and with very minimal ingredients except for these little tiny pieces of mystery meat that looked like canned food. Overall, not really meant to fill someone. I'm asked how it is, so I braced myself to try to calmly explain again it's not what I expected. A second guy in a suit (owner?) comes and interrogates me about why I don't like it.
It was awkward because he was like annoyed I didn't like it, and had to find something else for me to eat? Anyway, it was nice of him to get me a complimentary rose, but I let him know I don't feel comfortable ordering something else. Can you blame me for feeling like restaurants can be a coin toss in terms of trustworthiness? He insisted so I went with it. We hastily settled on spaghetti and meatballs. Yeah I know, but my hunger was telling me oh they messed up a white pasta? Let's just get red pasta and get this over with. So this dish comes out at record pace because now I'm the guy they want to get rid of and make at least some kind of money from, and it's just plain spaghetti and meatballs (like 2 little undercooked meatballs actually). Tasted very basic and again, undercooked meat. I reluctantly ate as much as I could, though all I wanted to do at that point was leave while probably everyone stared me down. This was $32 by the way. After that's over with, the waiter brings me a "happy birthday" plate dessert (he came around from outside the restaurant with it for some reason?) with this weird tasting ice cream and like a little chocolate cupcake on the side. It was.. not good lol but hey now they can say they got it over with. So I awkwardly ate a little of that too. Got not one word after that from them except the bill. Out $50+ just like that (I still tipped but I shouldn't have), and that's with the salad taken off the bill.
My hope is not even that this business gets better, as they already decided to treat me like crap. I just hope we all get better at holding these crappy businesses accountable. Food shouldn't be this complicated. read more
