While the food that my girlfriend and I consumed for dinner there last night was undeniably delicious, when it came to everything else, well... things fell rather short.
Let me start by saying one thing: I had been wanting to go to Bricco for a while now. Almost two years and was rather excited when the opportunity came for an impromptu dinner in the North End, on a late afternoon before heading to the nearby TD Garden for a Bruins game. After walking around for a bit, we arrived at Bricco and despite having no reservation, decided to try our luck. We were greeted rather coldy and were told that all of the tables (90% of which were empty) were all reserved but that the full menu was served at the bar if we could find a spot. So we walked around the bar, which wrapped around the back as well and managed to find some seats. There were more empty tables all around us. The place was only busy at the bar it seemed and that was rather weird. It was 5:00PM on a Saturday...
We sat down and noticed that the cocktails were priced at $13 a piece. We decided to forego that idea and decided to find a reasonably priced bottled of red wine and split that instead. We found an affordable bottle of Montipulciano and ordered that. But unfortunately, the high prices didn't end and their cocktails: their appetizers were all around $18, which is exorbitant. Their entrees are also in the high twenties so overall this is a pretty damn expensive place, and a pretentious one at that.
The woman taking care of us behind the bar became nicer and nicer as we spent more and more money. Initially, she was pretty much a cold bitch who barely glanced at us - we might as well could have been part of the proletariat. But eventually she realized that we were serious about dining there as we ordered away: we decided to split two of their high priced entrees and share a half an entree. We hoped that it could be enough food but didn't want our spending to be out of control.
To start, we ordered a plate of very thinly sliced, delicious spek and prosciutto plate ($17) which also came with a tiny morsel of stracchino cheese and some crisp bread. Along with this appetizer, we got the zucchini flowers which were stuffed with some truffled ricotta cheese and some tempura'd grilled vegetables ($19). Both were good, especially the latter of the two but at over $35 for both small plates, it definitely was not a good value. Actually, in retrospect, it was a horrible value. The portions were meager in comparison to the price point.
For the entree, after some discussion and a bit of research via the Yelp mobile app, we decided to split a half a portion of their ricotta pillows ($11) which came dressed with some truffle butter and some ricotta garnish. They were delicious but the half a portion was again, rather small for the price. But the value was slightly better than the appetizers.
Service was once again, not very quick. The woman wasn't all that friendly and didn't seem very knowledgeable from the start when we asked for help with some of their wines. She was barely able to answer questions about the menu as well and seemed busy talking to some of the staff on the other side of the bar. Our dinner at the bar took almost ninety minutes which is ridiculous and while we sat on the stools, a bit uncomfortable, and bumping elbows with completes strangers, the rest of the restaurant tables all around us remained empty - rather frustrating.
All in all this restaurant does serve up some delicious food but offers horrible value, especially if compared to other spots nearby. Their appetizers are insanely overpriced and the service is pretty horrible. They wouldn't seat us at a table because they were 'reserved' but more than half of the tables around us remained empty throughout our 90+ minutes spent there. And the atmosphere although chic and nice is also pretty pretentious, like most of the staff there that seems rather stuck up - they have this attitude and superiority complex... While I'm a fan of Italian food and the area, I wouldn't return there, unless they offer a Groupon of some sort or offer better value to their customers. There's many other options for me to spend my hard earned cash, places like Il Panino which serves up equally good food but at a much more affordable price. I was raised believing that Italian food should always be affordable - after all, it's pasta we're talking about here folks. Sure you can spike your dish with a bit of truffle, but c'mon, $19 for an appetizer? No thanks... read more
