Grinder’s Coffee Bar - Latte and sausage kolache

Still one of the best coffee places in town. Honestly didn't love the sf vanilla latte but like I…read moredid order a sf vanilla latte - are they ever good? The oat latte my friend got was creamy, well balanced and wonderful. We got the eggs, sausage, and cheese taco, chicken gumbo empanada, and the beef empanada and each one was delicious. The breakfast taco really hit the spot. Just right amount of salty, gooey cheese, and meat. Made my day. The empanadas are huge, enough for two people. Another awesome visit.

After having lunch at Loro in Kirby, I had some time to kill before some plans I had later that…read moreday. I hopped on the trust Yelp app to find a coffee shop nearby. Grinder's Coffee Bar came up and it was right across the street so I made my way over. I arrived around 1 p.m. on a Wednesday. I parked in their small complimentary lot and made my way inside. Ambiance (3.5/5): Grinder's is basically two spots in one. When you walk in, there's a small counter where you place your order. And a handful of seats. From there, you wan walk into a more spacious second room that houses a CBD shop. And more seating along with the bathroom. I sat at a couch in the CBD area. While weed isn't my thing, if you're into both weed and coffee, that makes for a nice one-two punch for you. There isn't a ton of seating, less so than most coffee shops. Luckily, since it was a weekday, I didn't have any trouble. I wonder if that's different on the weekends. They also have free WiFi if you'd like to linger and work or study. Service (2.5/5): The menu is a little confusing because they have a menu on the counter and a menu on the wall with different items. I didn't see that there was a menu on the counter until I was about to place an order. They also have some beverages in a cooler that aren't on either menu. Not the best set up. Service wasn't terribly friendly either. Food (N/A): Since I just had lunch prior, no food for me. They have a small, but appetizing number of pastries and small bites for sale if you get the munchies (pun intended). Drinks (3.5/5): I'm not a coffee drinker so take this with a grain of salt. When I go to a coffee shop, I like coffee shops that still have a nice selection of teas and juices. Grinder's has a small number of teas that can be made either hot or iced. I went with one, iced, and sweetened with agave (for a surcharge). I liked it and the price was reasonable. They also had a mocktail of sorts that was available on their seasonal menu, although like most mocktails, overpriced. While not really my vibe, if you're a CBD person, Grinder's will be right up your alley. It's a unique spot and located in a great part of town.

I do have a sweet tooth though, so it might be too sweet for some others, but I thought it pairs very well with their Honey Vanilla Latte or their other lattes. The service has been profoundly outstanding with their customers and I've noticed they're accommodating and joking with their customers. I've seen people of all ages at this establishment - students, couples, and people of all ages and ethnicities. It feels like a good spot to just get either a coffee or an alcoholic beverage and sit outside to enjoy the sunsets of Houston. It's also a very bike-able location if you live close in the neighborhood which makes it feel like a cute hole in the wall kinda vibe!

The parking situation isn't ideal, and seating is a bit limited (there is outdoor seating, however), but the nearby views are a huge plus! I also liked how they had a book table sectioned off where customers could borrow books. I ordered the Iced Pistachio Vanilla latte with oat milk so that I could catch up on work for finals. Overall, it was a tasty drink, but I wish the pistachio/nutty flavor had been a bit more prominent, and it felt more like a regular vanilla latte. Compared to other coffee shops, the prices here were reasonable given the size of the cup, so kudos for that, especially in this economy... CoffeeTrend also serves cocktails, which is another neat feature about this place. :)

I absolutely loved the vibe - it was welcoming and community touches all around. For example a little "take a book" wall, plant propagation exchange station, and some items for sale including a book one of their baristas wrote. How cool! And the COFFEE - this is somewhere where you can really taste the craft. Fantastic Ethiopian house blend. We also tried some pastries and the cornbread cookie (SO good). Decently busy on a Sunday morning, though easy parking in the lot. Enough light energy to either work/study or chat with a friend. Can't wait to go again.

I especially enjoyed being here sitting in the comfy chairs with my friend sipping the freshly brewed coffee and some delicious pastries. I first learned about this place was because of the OutSmart Magazine's annual recognition. People chose Cleo Coffee as the Gayest and Greatest Readers Choice Award, along with the other business Cleo Roasting Co. The best time to come by is commute hours and Sunday afternoon. I could usually find space to sit and park. I usually buy the freshest roasted beans and ask them to grind them for me. So, I can take them home to brew at my house. I'm here frequently to buy my freshly roasted coffees.

Pro-Tips for the Budget-Conscious: - If you time your visit between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, all pastries are 50% off. It's easily the best deal in the neighborhood and the perfect excuse to clear out the display case. - Student Discount: Don't forget to flash your ID! They offer a student discount, which makes this a prime "study treat" spot. The Vibe: Seating is quite limited indoors, so don't bank on a large group table. However, they have a small outdoor patio that is lovely when the weather is behaving. It's a great spot to people-watch while you get your sugar fix. We went with the Sambusak and once again, I was not disappointed! The pastry was hearty and well baked, with a yummy filling consisting of eggplant and other veggies and a semi cooked egg. I also had an iced mocha, which though a classic, was refreshingly well made and luxurious, with a balanced sweetness. A great spot to spend some time!
