Not sure why people give this more than 2 stars- one is for location- gorgeous on the water - 2 was for the blueberry bread pudding. Had reservations for 5 of us - seated quickly- than waited at least 15 mins just for water. Waitress came we ordered drinks and apps- waited another 20 mins and apps arrived. Drinks took another 10?? Really?? Service is weak at best. Food ( especially for what they are charging) was overpriced and fair at best. Now mind you- I do not mind paying good money for top notch food and flavors. We ordered the oysters - good- but really, how can you mess up raw oysters. The fries - the reason I really wanted to try this place- we tried both truffle and blue cheese. The blue cheese were under cooked, loaded with a terrible cheap Gorgonzola sauce - loaded with way too much balsamic that created soggy fries. The truffle fries were cooked a bit better but drenched in truffle oil causing a soggy oily mess. We tried the bbq chicken, margarita and butternut squash with ricotta pizzas. Dough was doughy, undercooked- way too much cheese on all three with the ricotta on the butternut squash over powering. The bruschetta shrimp again loaded with way too much oil creating a soggy mess. The Thai calamari was rubbery with a weak Thai sauce added to it- and if the plate were any smaller wouldn't even know you ate. The brussel sprouts came burnt rather than roasted and huge rather than nice small crispy bits. Dessert of bread pudding and cheesecake were good. We will not be back- read more

I was very disappointed in my experience at Breakwater last night. I ordered the grilled seafood medley, but when it arrived it was missing the grilled bread listed on the menu and the salmon was so undercooked that it was cold in the center; the scallops were barely seared. The jasmine rice was watery, and the serving size was small. The server didn't ask in advance how I wanted the fish prepared, and I was not able to draw his attention from his casual conversation with another patron across the outside deck. I had to ask another server for salt and pepper, and when I finally received the check, it listed two drinks that I didn't order. Very disappointed for the price, and I won't be back. read more

charming restaurant with beautiful interiors and a large back patio. We got there 1115am on a Friday among the first in the restaurant. It took a while to be greeted and seated despite the place being almost empty with plenty of staff walking by us. The view was beautiful but we need more than that nowadays. The food was forgetable, the fish tacos were fresh but nothing unique. The clam chowder was good but I expect nothing less from a place next to the water. Great views, good food, small portions and slow service! Came here on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Wait for an outside table was 30-40 minutes and it was a little breezy so decided to wait for an inside table, about 15 minutes. Our waitress, Bailey, was pleasant. Ordered drinks and the clams on the half shell, clam chowder, and two side Caesar salads to start. For entrees, ordered fried shrimp and seafood pasta. Took a while to get our entrees, but Bailey did bring us bread. Food was good but portions are small, 7 shrimp in the fried shrimp. The one disturbing thing was that there was a rather large chunk of lobster on the floor. I watched 7 servers walk around it (rather than clean it up) and an 8th walk in it (see pics). Not very safe or sanitary!! Finally, after I took a pic, someone came over and picked it up. Overall, nice place for the views, but for the price would probably go elsewhere. read more

Out for our 37th anniversary dinner. Seafood was the mission...my wife got one of the prefix menu choices. 3 course, dual price menu(based on 2 groups of entrees) She got the buffalo shrimp appetizer, seafood stuffed (crab, shrimp, scallop) fillets of sole with lobster bisque, grilled asparagus over white rice. As she commented all perfectly cooked. I got the Pan Seared Stonington Sea Scallops * Over Lobster, Asparagus, Lemon & Parmesan Risotto - excellent. I've always wanted to try this place. This place is a perfect waterfront location with a parking lot. They offer kids a kids menu and they will provide crayons for them to color. We were able to sit outside and in the shade where we could still see the water. Our waitress was nice. We ordered a bunch of appetizers and the clam chowder. The clam chowder was delicious! There weren't too many potatoes in it and it was really thick. We also got the regular calamari, which was good and crispy and the legs on the calamari were not extra chewy. My son got the steak kids meal that he absolutely loved it and was cooked to perfection and the waffle sweet potato fries were also delicious! We also got the mushroom bruschetta and also the shrimp tostada. Everything was delicious and flavorful but the tostada was a little hard to eat so we definitely utilized those utensils. I got the tropical mojito that was very tasty and I felt like I was in the Caribbean and my husband stuck with draft beers. They have a decent beer list. Only one negative thing I have to add was my dish, perhaps little off there game today.... I had order a Chicken Frances, I was horrible to be honest. The chicken had been swimming in sauce, I had not realize there was potato's and greens under the chicken until I drained the sauce from the plate... Disappointment, I had been looking forward to this dish from other views on yelp. Also counting in the price of the dish it's self... Positives, our appetizer was simply delicious! Shrimp Antipasto-- Husband burger was amazing! -Husbands words "they cooked it to perfection, juicy, guacamole was great touch, not a lot place cook the burger moist. Great burger"... Breakwater is the nicest restaurant in the Stonington Mystic area if you want to be eating on the water. In summer you can dine on a great deck and in the winter you have lovely views out the windows. It is on the water. As opposed to the other local restaurants that look out on the Sound. Breakwater is on a pier. You can tie your boat up next to your table! The menu is a nice mix of fried seafood, seafood entrees and a couple of selections for carnivores and vegetarians. I had fish tacos , this visit and my bride had bouillabaisse and our friend had a burger. My taco was perfect, MK liked the bouillabaisse, but I being the food snob, thought the seafood mix was a bit too far from the original, but hey, this is Stonington, not Marseille. We split an oyster Rockefeller app as well. Good also non traditional. The wine list is not overwhelming either in price or selection. Service is friendly, the atmosphere is super. This place is terrific. Came in with no reservations at 6;30pm on a Friday night. They were very busy and we lucked out by getting seated by a very sympathetic manager. Our server Michele was awesome. Thai Calamari to start was cooked perfectly - super light and crisp!! The Halibut special may have been the best piece of fish I have ever had. Finished it off with warm blueberry bread pudding - which was also amazing. The scenery on the water is stunning. Highly recommend!! read more

I do love this place, so much. I have always had a delicious meal. The view is outstanding. The cocktail, wine and beer list is above average. The attentiveness of the staff can be lacking at times, depending on who's working. I watched the female bartender pour six glasses of champagne for three couples at the bar. She brought two glasses over, and then went and had a sip of her coffee before she brought over the rest. I truly believe that whoever owns this restaurant would be outraged with her service. It took us a solid ten minutes to get her attention so we could pay our bill. I still give this place five stars, as this was an isolated incident. It is also my go-to for gift certificates when I want to give someone a nice food experience. The food is worth the wait, and the view is worth the occasionally slow service. read more

Came here Sunday for a late lunch and was able to get seated immediately by the water. It's was a very casual relaxing spot as there weren't many people there. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive. The nachos were delicious. The grilled chicken was tender and cooked to perfection and made the nachos one of the better ones I've had. They have a generous amount of pico se gallo and cheese. As a lover of clam chowder. I do not recommend getting the New England one here. It had a fishy taste to it and couldn't finish my bowl. Friend ordered the chicken francese, it was delicious! I kept stealing bites, really should've gotten one of my own but I was full from the nachos and beer. Boy do I miss the old days when this was Skippers Dock. This place, foodwise, is a bust. Granted we just had a Cobb Salad and Shrimp Tacos. But come on! Salad was small with limited ingredients. Tacos were lukewarm with limping shell and bland ingredients. I mean, how hard is it to make a taco!? Bread pudding was microwaved to oblivion. Prices are out of control. NY prices for Newark food. The reservations are really not true reservations, you will have to wait if you are lucky enough to get one. They say they only take a small number of reservations and most times you will not get one. Bartender was extremely condescending, informed my friend who has celiacs disease that "gluten is in everything, it's just a matter of finding what has a smaller amount" (???)... while trying to encourage her to try a drink that he couldn't promise didn't contain gluten. He then said potatoes have gluten (totally false, they do not), and laughed off her questions about drink modification. We sat at the bar for over an hour waiting for our table. We were able to get the bartender's attention when we first came in and got drinks. We did not have an opportunity to order another round since the bartender never came back and never checked in. You might think he was to busy but there were 8 people in the bar. Just horrible service. It took 70 minutes to be seated but that was expected. We ordered and our food came 50 minutes. I had the Seafood Medley over pasta. It was very tasty but the portions were not generous. Have an appetizer or you will be hungry. Our waitress was very nice but we had to ask for water/drink refills. Nice location. Nice view. The experience at Breakwater is absolutely horrendous compared to other restaurants in the area that sport similar views and higher quality food at more reasonable price points. The service at Breakwater is terrible to a point that you should avoid this restaurant entirely. We waited for someone to even address our existence sitting at our table (after waiting an hour to be seated) for 35 minutes. When we approached the staff to send someone over to our table, they were extremely rude and acted as if we were crazy for even bringing it up in the first place. To be frank, I never write Yelp reviews... but this experience was terrible enough to warrant one. 0/10 recommend. read more

I haven't been to this restaurant location since I was a child and so glad to come back and dine at the Breakwater. The restaurant always had a beautiful view from any seat outside. Their bloody Mary's were the best we've had in a long time and the food was delicious as well! We highly recommend the grilled seafood plate and the scallops on risotto. Breakwater is a perfect place to have a lovely lunch. I have never been for dinner so I can not comment on that. Our service was great, and lunch delicious. The ambiance can't be beat with a lovely view of Stonington Harbor. We boated there for lunch and my only recommendation would be to go early because dock space is limited. It smelled rotten right when I walked in the door, which is the last thing you want to encounter when visiting a seafood restaurant. After being seated, I ran to the bathroom and upon returning I found my table covered with flies. At least 4 just walking around, it was gross. I could see other customers swatting away flies while eating also. So what do I do? I of course order fish tacos. To be honest, they weren't that bad and I didn't get sick, but that smell and all the flies were just a huge turn off. Let's just say I have zero interest in returning. read more

The view from the deck seating area was great. The waitress that served us dinner was very nice. This gets one star. This is where it stops. The two male bar tenders were slow as molasses and did not acknowledge our presence for at least five minutes before a bar menu was offered to us, and that was only after a man seating next to us at the bar finally spoke up to let them know that we were all ready for service. And NO the bar area was NOT full. They do not allow drinks ordered and paid for at the bar to be transported to the dinner table. They do not allow "happy hour" drinks to be ordered at the dinner table, there you pay full price even at "happy hour." When our table was ready we could not get a bar tender to acknowledge us in order to get the bar tab, so we left cash on the bar to cover the drink prices and an undeserved generous tip, and moved from the bar to our dinner table. Halfway through our dinner one of the bartenders approached us at the table and informed us that he would be bringing the bar tab and he would collect the money. We informed him that cash for the full tab plus the tip was left in plain view on the bar. Incredible! Apparently It took them at least half hour before they realized that we were no longer at the bar. Pathetic bar service. Guess what? The "happy hour" drinks were noticeably watered down as we found out later when we compared the same drink at the dinner table at full price, ordered with our waitress. What a scam! The kitchen was no better. The calamari appetizer was overcooked and rubbery, and mostly tentacles. The "bread pudding" was a botched up concoction that resembled something closer to a pathetic attempt at monkey bread. My wife's medium burger showed up medium RARE and she threw half of it away. My seafood pasta dish contained the same rubbery calamari that could not be chewed. Overall: The food flavor and preparation was mediocre at best. The portions were overpriced and undersized. The bar service and drink consistency was seriously lacking. And, the establishment policy to restrict "happy hour" drink consumption to the bar is utterly imbecilic. If this is their attempt at bouncing back from the pandemic downturn, then in my opinion they need to seriously revamp their business model. read more

I've been to this place two times this year once in the middle of a weekday afternoon for lunch. It was rather breezy and chilly, but the view was terrific with plenty of open space on the great new decks that they justrenovated. The menu was ambitious, but not much was available st the time, and few staff were present. The second time was Friday evening and the place was packed. I got us a table by the window indoors which was ok. However, as soon became evident that the restaurant was not ready for prime time. We waited about 40 minutes , while other we served. The waitress seemed upset and distracted-at the number of assignment she had, and I soon learned why. she had great deal of difficulty describing what the menu items were, and ended up to get the order Wrong any way. After another extended wait she returned to say they were out of my 1st and 2nd choice. choice. When finally it did come, served by a hostess, my oentrée was missing and my wife's was almost cold. (No doubt sitting outside the kitchen, waiting to be picked up) . The waitress said she didn't know what happened to my order, (as if were not part of her job to keep track of such things) . Finally it was delivered, minus a sideby a busboy, without any apology. I was so not much outraged, as sympathetic to these minimum wage worker and others that depend on tips. With the one man band singing dreadfull version of 90's songs, one wondered whether Chef Ramsey was giving them hell in the kitchen. ( but no caneras were in siight). it was almost funny. It's clear what's the matter here, that who ever's in the smallest kitchen seemed unfamiliar that the menu items had actually need to be delivered to the customers, not some of the , or approximately as ordered The promises versus the reality of the menu reminded me of the restaurant scene in the movie, "Brazil". The middle managers of the big restaurant were invible, and the the the wait staff were not communicative, all averting their eyes pretending not to see me franticly gesticulatig. They seemed to e blame each other, and it didn't seem anyone wanted to own the process. Perhaps all the plays in a place where on some sort of prison work release assignment. The public must not be noticing it so much, perhaps because the trendy overpriced eateries in Mystic were over booked. . The waterfront location and view cannot be beat, it is jaw-dropping. The outdoor patio has great seating that overlooks the sparkling waters. If the food matched the waterfront view in quality, then Breakwater would be bangin'! However Breakwater is weak in the food area, sadly. The food has been underwhelming in my couple of experiences. Was hesitant after reading reviews to try here for lunch but as we can dock a boat right in front decided to stop. Glad we did. Everything was almost perfect. We arrived on the deck and a sign said to check in with hostess. Had to go in search of her and when found was unfriendly and not professional at all...minus one star. I picked up a menu lying on the ground in front of her station that she walked right by and had ignored. We basically had to tell her where to sit us on the not busy deck. Once seated though everything thankfully improved. Waited on immediately and food was great! Server super friendly and she came back many times to check on us. Giant order of fish and chips for my husband (who had leftovers) with both tarter sauce and a malt vinegar aioli that was superb. I had a beautifully presented Caesar salad topped with a delicious, charred grilled chicken breast...huge! Basically an entire, in one piece, romaine heart with the breast sliced and placed along the top with plenty of dressing and a large amount of shaved Parmesan flakes.
