    HUEVOS RANCHEROS

I have been driving past The Breakfast House for YEARS ignoring it like an idiot. Embarrassing behavior on my part because this place is actually elite. My friend and I hadn't seen each other in forever and wanted a diner vibe with alcohol because we're grown and tired. He suggested this spot. They don't take reservations so you check in, give your number, and wait for the "your table is ready" text like you're on standby for brunch court. We went on New Year's Day so obviously it was busy, but we waited maybe 15 minutes which felt suspiciously efficient for a holiday. Let's talk about the staff because every single person in there was insanely nice. Like too nice. Like is this a trap? The whole place feels chill, welcoming, and chaotic in the best way...like everyone actually likes working there. I ordered 6 mango mimosas because I lack self-respect and the Huevos Rancheros because that's my non-negotiable breakfast order. I fully interrogated the server to make sure it was legit Mexican-style and made him add salsa verde on top. It was incredible. No notes. I cleaned the plate. Bathrooms were clean. Restaurant was clean. My experience with every single staff member was excellent. Zero complaints, which is rare for me. Moral of the story: stop sleeping on this place like I did. I will absolutely be back, probably sooner than I should.

The food was so good we ended up going twice. The first time I had the chicken and waffles. The chicken was fried and seasoned perfectly. The second time I had the chorizo hash. The service was fast and friendly. On top of that the restaurant was very clean and comfortable. I'd love to go back!

Such a cute little place! Went around 11:30 on a Sunday and surprisingly no wait! It was a mix or diner and converted bar vibes. Both meals we split were delicious. The aioli on the hash and the runny egg were so good. The corn was a welcome addition to a hash, too. The burrito was massive with a yummy sauce and a good amount of avocado which some places skimp on. The side fruit was a good mix and the side pancake was fluffy and yummy. If I had to pick I would say the burrito was my favorite but it was a close one!

We came here early on a Sunday morning just before it started to fill up. We were fortunate to be seated at a table in the back. Warm sunshine was pouring in The breakfast menu is extensive so it took me a little time to decide what to order. We had black coffee and it is very good My friend ordered waffles, which I generally don't consider a good value, but he loves waffles and doesn't make them at home At our age we're allowed to make such choices While I considered ordering the huevos rancheros in the end, I ordered two eggs, scrambled, with bacon and the tomatoes on sourdough toast. Four strips of bacon, and it was pretty good bacon. I like thick sliced Costco brand but boars head is also good. My eggs were nice and fluffy without being runny In an English breakfast with tomato and beans the tomato is usually a Roma tomato that has been sliced in half and grilled or placed under the broiler to char and soften it. I was expecting something like that for my tomatoes and toast, but that's not what it was. I was a little disappointed to see the tomatoes did not come on the toast and they were raw. Not that there's anything wrong with that but you know now why I was expecting what I was expecting. And I do think if you're going to say tomatoes and toast then you should put the tomatoes on the toast or beside them and I respectfully suggest that they be grilled or otherwise warmed to complement the warm toast. My two cents. I have been here a few times before when I visit my friend, so it won't stop me coming again It's a nice space albeit a little tight. I prefer sitting in the back room. But try to sit at a table by the window when getting some sunlight on a cold winter day outside.

    Hash with barely any chorizo

This place comes off as a nice neighborhood breakfast establishment. The restaurant is kind of small, so tables are close together. When my friend and I first entered close.to the time they opened all the workers just stared at us as we waited to be seated. One young lady finally came over to sit us with a not so friendly look. I said hi, perhaps she didn't hear me but she didn't respond. On a brighter note they do sell alcohol in the morning! My friend asked for bananas on her pancake and she personally felt they could've put an entire banana on it. I had the chorizo hash and although the flavor was there the dish itself barely had any chorizo in it. I had to ask for extra to add to it and when I received the extra it was not hot.

My friend and I came during lunch and it was packed. You wait to be seated, but it was pretty quick. The tables have a QR code for the menu stuck on them although they have physical menus at the tables to list their weekly specials. Note that it is stated on the physical menu that there is a 3% credit surcharge. If you ask to remove it, then you need to pay instead with cash or debit card. We ordered the house signature, Supreme Chorizo Hash with a buttermilk pancake, and the weekly special, Dieguito's Benedict with roasted potatoes. The hash was super yummy, well seasoned, and filling. All the flavors worked well together. The pancake was good and also very fluffy as advertised on their menu. Dieguito's Benedict with roasted potatoes was good. For some reason the Benedict sandwich itself reminded me of the taste of a McChicken from McDonalds. Make no mistake that that this place is operating on a different level from them! They have a bathroom for customers in the back and the interior decor is quirky, but cute. Not sure how Thor fits in, but I approve! I believe they drew representations of the staff to surround Thor on the chalkboard decor. There is a decent amount of seating available and you don't feel super packed in. The entrance is on the corner of the intersection. Overall, this is a cute spot with good food. I wouldn't minds coming back to visit again if I'm in the area.

HOLY COW!!!! AMAZING! I have never had such a delicious vegan meal. This place is top notch for vegans! Chefs kiss! I can't rent enough about this dish! Upon arrival we were seated quickly and service was instant! No waiting! The setting isn't really trendy or hip, it's just like a regular breakfast spot, but who care the food is amazing! Love love love. I will come back in the future!

    Chilaqiiles
    Noah L.

Really quite delicious but simple brunch. We liked everything we had here from the French toast to the chilaqiiles. Well, in particular the chilaqiiles. Good simple diner vibe and good service. The coffee was basic diner coffee, not bad at all but that could have been a bit better. Prices were reasonable but this isn't a cheap place. Overall will be back if I'm near one!

Really fast service! Very nice staff too. It is really busy and hectic in here on the weekends but they get you in and out quick! The food was mostly Mexican influenced which was really good, a little pricey for some breakfast items but expected in Chicago. It has a homey diner feel.

    Taylor O.

Our server, Santiago, was charming and attentive. We came on a rainy Saturday and were sat immediately. We got the recommended chilaquiles and corn hash. The chilaquiles had an amazing red sauce, and the fresh corn in the hash really brought out the fresh flavors. The decor was very kitschy-cute, and they have little illustrations of all their employees on the wall. GLUTEN FREE: Secret gf pancake

    What's parking like?

I parked on the street really close to the restaurant, with no problem. It was also free, not metered parking.

    Do they have bottomless mimosas?

No but they do have multiple flavors including mango and passion fruit!

Yelp is suggesting this is a BYOB? Can you express in your yelp page that you're not a BYOB restaurant please. I would have hate to come and be told I can't bring my wine.

No. This is not BYOB. They have a full bar.

Is it BYOB? I've been to the other location and it was.

It is NOT BYOB. Tried to bring some champagne in 2 weeks ago and they were a bit hesitant but still let me bring it in. They have their liquor license so you shouldn't BYOB.

The staff were super friendly too and gave us some awesome recommendations, which definitely helped because there were so many things I wanted to try. I ordered the Harissa Shakshuka, it came with roasted peppers, onions, tomatoes, garbanzo beans, goat cheese, and two poached eggs, served with sourdough toast. When it came out, the presentation immediately caught my attention. The two poached eggs were sitting right on top of this beautiful, rich sauce, with the goat cheese scattered throughout. Once I cut into the eggs and that runny yolk mixed into everything underneath... wow. The flavor was outstanding. The tomatoes and roasted peppers gave the dish a deep, slightly sweet and savory base, while the harissa added a warm, smoky heat that slowly built with each bite. The garbanzo beans were soft and tender, adding this really nice texture. And the sourdough toast was perfect for this. I could scoop up the sauce, egg yolk, beans, and peppers all in one bite. That's when the dish really came together. This was a seriously delicious breakfast. Every bite had something going on, and I'd definitely order it again.

John's is Michelin recommended so I said- sign me up. All I knew going in was the accolade and that the chef preferred to do hyper local- which im all about. The vibes are perfect IMO. Cozy, clean, organic shapes with that bar (see the featured photos). It also has a relaxed enough vibe that despite the prestige it is truly a more formal/casual vibe- being there on a sunday I saw a handful of small groups come in no res just looking for wine. The food itself was pretty good. I thought the pork collar was cooked well and they did what I was hoping a hyper local produce focused place would which is not over cook the vegetables and let them shine. One note: assume way more complexity than the menu displays. The pork itself for example is listed as just the pork veggies and with its sauce so my expectations were hesitant - but what made the dish great was the tang that comes from the seasoning/marinade. What really stood out to me though was the staff- it could be that I was there in a dead hour but everyone put me at ease as a single server at a table (v bar) and my server even gave me a taste of their amazing bandaged cheddar - which as a huge foodie really made my experience great. Because theres no way im easily grabbing that cheese. SO as well to their wine director Felix especially. He and I connected over the ceramics they feature (Monsoon Pottery- check her out) and when I spilled some sauce on my white shirt he was quick to get me some soda water and I heard him asking around for some shout. So- formal/casual place but I felt treasured. Which tbh is really what makes good restaurants different to me when youre hitting this price point in chicago. Plenty of POS fine trendy places down town.

Upon arriving, we were greeted by a friendly staff member who seated us outside as requested. To start, we ordered two piña coladas, which were perfect for the hot day. For food, we ordered the Parsons Big Dipper Platter, the three-piece fish fry, and Cindy's coleslaw. Let's start with the best part of the meal -- Cindy's coleslaw. It was creamy, flavorful, and exactly how coleslaw should be. The three-piece fish fry was tasty as well, although the batter was a bit too thick for my liking. The biggest disappointment was the Parsons Big Dipper Platter. According to the menu, it included hush puppies, chicken nuggets, and fried shrimp. Unfortunately, when the platter arrived, there was no shrimp included. We brought it to the waiter's attention, and only then were we informed they had run out of shrimp. It would have been nice to know that before ordering. It's surprising for such a busy restaurant to run out of an item that's featured on the menu. As for the service, unfortunately it was poor and inattentive. We constantly had to flag our waiter down anytime we needed something. Overall, the atmosphere was great, but the service and food inconsistencies made the experience disappointing. Not sure if we'll be returning.

We were glad to get a seat out on the patio on a lovely Tuesday evening after having spent time at the Zoo just a short walk away. The patio is lovely, two servers handling the large space extremely well. There were some things we had that were standouts, and others that were just fine. The half chicken was excellent, cooked perfectly and rubbed with delicious warming spices, the potatoes and pickled veggies the perfect counterbalance. Similar idea to the dish at Armitage Alehouse, but better seasoned and a lot lighter. The steamed mussels rivaled those of Armitage as well at a fraction of the cost. Very different broth, but the mussels themselves were excellent. We were also really impressed with the tuna tartare, an excellent blend of flavors and textures we could have had seconds on. The crispy shrimp rolls were a slight miss, largely because the shrimp were finely chopped, rather than sliced chunks. You ended up getting more the essence of shrimp than shrimp itself. We also felt the skillet cookie was just fun, no better or worse than we've had at places like Crosby Kitchen. Overall, a really good meal that scrapes being really great at times, and does it at affordable prices with friendly, attentive service.
