Love this place so much. I've lived near it for so long but never really found myself going all the time, but everyone there is so nice. Once I went in and they forgot my drink in a big rush. I stood for 10ish mins and never got my drink. After everyone before and after me got their drinks I went back up to the cashier who was super apologetic, made my drink as fast as possible, and gave me a fully punched out punch card for a free drink. I wanted to like this place as it was recommended to me - but unfortunately if you don't have a good espresso, I can't recommend. It was unfortunately undrinkable, tasted like battery acid. Dark Matter Coffee is great - the Agave Latte is by far my favorite compared to their other lattes and mochas that I've tried. It's creamy, sweet but not too sweet, and overall a great flavor profile. It seems like a great place to study or work as well. You can often find many people working diligently (and relatively quietly) so the ambiance is great. I don't often write such low of a review but the one star is for the staff. On most occasions I've only encountered the friendliest of people - in fact the first time I visited and had a hard time choosing a drink, the individual at the register was so kind and helped me make a choice based on what I typically enjoy at other coffee shops. However today I had the absolute WORST experience where the barista was so rude to me after they took my order wrong. All I wanted was the coffee I ordered and calmly explained how there must have been a mix up. In return I was basically shamed multiple times for asking for the right coffee instead of the one they tried to give me and I was just baffled by how passive aggressive the staff member was. Dark matter is my favorite coffee and I've found the in person experience to be consistent over the past ten years. For one the staff are always super friendly and chill. It's not uncommon for me to see them having actual conversations with costumers at the bar. They look happy and relaxed which I think sets the tone for the overall vibe of the place. The pastries are great. I think the donuts are from do rite. It's also a nice quiet place to work or read. Always a treat to visit. read more

During a recent visit to Chicago, I walked by this coffee shop two mornings in a row and was stopped in my tracks each time by the aromas escaping their front door. On my third morning, I decided to stop in. Several people had already assumed their positions at one of the tables inside, enjoying a bev and free wi-fi, when I was greeted warmly by the team member behind the counter. I decided on a hot chai latte, with oat milk and a shot of espresso. The flavors were so earthy and unrefined, like real coffee and tea should taste! I was also strong armed (not really) into trying a cinnamon old fashioned donut. This was a bonus because the donuts are brought in from Do-Rite Donuts and Chicken which was another establishment I was wanting to try while in town. The donut was nicely sized, moist and flavorful...all the things you want a donut to be! Came in the morning for coffee in this place in Lakeview East on Belmont. It's about all they have. Osmium is a good place to do some working. Has quite a hipster atmosphere. There's cold and hot drinks as well as a few pastries. A place to look at art while having coffee. It's got all these paintings from local artists for sale. This is the second best thing here to spend your money on though. Coffee is the main reason why people come. It's about $4 for the cheapest stuff. Actually not that bad for the area. The Agave Latte is one of the popular specialties. It's made with chocolate and cinnamon. The pastries also looked good, but there were eggs in these. Best place around here for hipster ass coffee. Osmium Coffee Bar is suchhhhhh a vibe. I really like how this place has art all over their walls. When ordering a latte they also have art in those too =) It's a fun spot to grab a drink and hang out for a bit. I was here with a large group for a mid day caffeine treat and service was quick. It took about 10 mins for all of our orders to be prepared. Drinks are strong and delicious. They also have drinks that have a big spicy kick to em. Such a delightful unique coffee shop. Good vibes inside. They have some of the most unique specialty latte combinations I've seen. I'm still dreaming about Dolor De Oro, it is the perfect winter drink, the perfect swicy hug with a delicious balance between the sweetness of the chocolate and the spice of the cinnamon and habenero. The walls are painted with cool, intricate designs that are really inviting and funky! I like that there's a decent sized bar area you can sit at and watch the baristas work their magic. The space overall is on the smaller size, but they do a good job optimizing space with lots of tables to work from. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. I ordered an iced vanilla latte and an everything bagel with cream cheese. They have some food items sourced from some local favorites -- Steingold bagels & Do-Rite donuts, but there's no kitchen, more of snack items to enjoy. We stopped by here after a Cubs game one afternoon, bought a couple of bags of beans, drinks and hung out for a bit before heading back to our hotel. To drink, I ordered an almond milk cortado which was smooth, no bitterness whatsoever and the espresso they were using that day had a hint of sweetness to the bean. I drained it before we even left because it was so good. My husband ordered an iced vanilla almond milk latte which was very good. The coffee was strong and the vanilla wasn't overpowering or too sweet which balanced his drink out nicely. We grabbed a bag of 'Another Side' which we're brewing at home this week. It has notes of cocoa, dried fig and almonds. It's a light to medium roast and goes down easily but leaves an aftertaste I'm not fond of. We also bought a bag of 'A Love Supreme' which is their house blend. That had notes of cocoa, walnuts and toffee. I'm excited to try this one to see if I can taste the walnuts which is one of my favorite notes in a roasted bean. read more

At Osmium, I was not very impressed by the coffee or the atmosphere inside. I may have just gone on a bad day a few months ago but it was unpleasant. The coffee was very bitter and watery, and that is coming from someone who enjoys a strong coffee. I ordered a latte and somehow the shots, syrup, and milk appeared to separate, it was strangely watery and milky at the same time. The space inside is very small and would probably not be the best for accessibility, as it's very narrow. As an autistic person it was far too loud for me, but I should have just gone outside. Stopped in on a Wednesday late morning to check out the amazing artwork on the walls (think fever dream/LSD induced graffiti vibes), stayed for a nitro cold brew (of four on tap!). The staff is kind, friendly and patient. They have some baked goods- vegan, gluten free too. The music is a bit loud and for some reason the wifi does not have a routable IP v4 physical adapter, so if you're trying to log into a government VPN, it's not going to work, Maybe not a problem in this town, but I'm visiting from DC and am a federal employee. I couldn't use my computer and had to relocate for work. I will be stopping back in later to buy some canned cold brew for home! SO SMOOTH. I found this place just a few hours before my flight back to California, and I wish I had discovered it sooner. I was really impressed with how inviting and attentive the staff were. I even bought one of their sweaters, despite my luggage being full! The drinks were perfect, and the pistachio donut (I forgot the exact name) was delicious. Funky cool coffee spot! I stopped in early one morning just as the sun was coming up. The colorful shop lit nice and bright against the backdrop of the dark morning drew me in.
