I've been craving a bacon roll since being back in Scotland. Even more so, a lorne roll. Then I found this place with searching the Google... Damn it feels good to sink my teeth into this cruelty free meaty goodness!!! Both sandwiches were done perfectly - with little care and lots of (vegan) butter. Just slap it all in a roll and call it a day.

The Ronseal of Edinburght cafes, BBL does exactly what it says on the tin. The food is run by a couple of no nonsense ladies who specialise in good, stodgy, home-style food. Breakfasts range from hot-filled rolls to cereals, porridge and fry-ups. Lunches come in the form of the aformentioned hot rolls with a plethora of cold fillings, which in turn extend to their range of wraps, baked potatoes and salads. Furthermore they offer daily spcial main meals such as cheeseburgers, curries, mac 'n' cheese, and other such delights of that ilk. Brunch well, take your pick from the above! BBL is one of a few cafes focussing on pulling in the breakfast/lunch crowd. Within a 5 minute walk they face competition from the likes of Holyrood Cafe, Chapters at Holyrood and Dovecot. So what do they have in their arsenal? I suppose what sets BBL apart from their competitors is experience. The ladies in charge know how to cook a fry-up. They know how to fill a roll or a ladle up a curry for you. They know their clientele, ranging from students to office crowd to labourers. They get the lot, in more ways than one. Their prices are higher than say Holyrood Cafe, but they offer a better-looking end product. At the end of the day most of these cafes are punching in the same weight class, no one outdoing the other by any great stretch. But at the same time if any of these guys were a boxer they'd be middleweight. Worth a look, if only to make up your own mind.

Spectacular!! We found this out of the way of the crowds and went on Monday morning for a Full Scottish Breakfast! It was quiet, quaint and quality. £5.50 for this is a steal.

Roll & vegan lorne sausage and they now offer Vitalite!

My beeline was for their homemade vegetarian, suitable for vegans, lorne sausage - or more commonly called in Scotland, the Square Sausage.

The food was absolutely delicious! My porridge was so hearty and yummy, I wanted to lick the bowl. My spouse's eggs benedict dish was also fantastic, and you can tell they use very fresh, high quality ingredients. The way they serve the meals in little stainless steel lunch boxes is adorable. My chai tea latte with oat milk was fantastically spicy and not too sweet. The server was friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and always nearby, so it was easy to ask for our check when we were ready. And the inside of the restaurant had a warm, cozy feel. I would gladly eat every breakfast here the next time we're in Edinburgh!

When it came to ordering, I got an Iced Latte and a Buttery Bap. The menu is a bit difficult to decipher, as it was confusing how much or how little can be added to it and at what cost. The menu said I could only pick one filling, but when I asked I was informed that I could pick an unlimited amount. I'm glad I trusted my instinct and went with just two: Veggie Haggis and Tattie Scones. Both of these were truly delicious. However, there was an extra charge for the second filling. Prices for additions are listed at the bottom of the menu as if they were sides you could order separately. On the receipt, I also saw that I was charged 0.50 extra for ice. I don't understand why places charge extra to make an iced drink when overall you're actually getting less of the drink. Overall, everything tasted good and I'm glad I was able to try numerous Scottish classics.

We clearly didn't plan things out well, as we had to scramble to hit stops 6 and 7 within an hour of closing, on our last full day in Edinburgh. But, in our defense, coffee shops close up super early in Edinburgh! We hustled our way from the Mile towards Cairngorm, side-stepping tourists and hurrying across intersections. On a normal day, it would've been a nice jaunt through town, but on this day, it was a hectic seemingly-longer-than-it-should-have-been-half-sprint to the front door. I did love the feel of this shop, from the steps leading down to the cozy interior and the bags of spent coffee bean lining the ceiling. The girl working that day was very nice and welcoming. We placed our order and settled into a small table near the back of the building. I kept an eye on the barista (hubby's back was to the counter) so that I could pop up to grab our drinks when they were ready, but she brought them to us, instead. She saw our Disloyal 7 cards out on the table, and said, "Be sure to bring that by before you leave so that I can stamp them!" The lattes were good, with a nice, rich and creamy flavor. I think I could've ended our night here, wrapped up in the warmth of a good latte and a comfortable chair, but my husband pointed out that we had time to get to the final stop on our list, if we hurried. So, we went up to the counter and had the barista stamp their slice, and then hurried once more into the cold Edinburgh dusk.
