This is the kind of place you love having up the street from you. Everything is made in house, quality ingredients and super friendly staff. They do a lot of takeout, but there are dine in seats and it's a very cozy environment.

Such a wonderful little gem this is! We had breakfast there this morning. Everything was fresh and tasty! The scones are the best we have had on our trip. I had the porridge with almonds and honey. It was hot, creamy and delicious. Kevin had eggs on toast that came with plenty of fluffy just-made scrambled eggs. Prices are very reasonable. The clientele are regulars who live nearby. The area has lots of cute little shops and places to browse. Of course, we took a couple of extra scones to go!

This is an absolutely charming establishment from the outside to the inside! Many breakfast/brunch/lunch choices that are delicious. The staff is very kind and attentive. My husband and I both had the French toast and bacon and it was flavorful and crisp. Latte and hot chocolate are both high winners! We had a hard time deciding what delicious breakfast to have - which means we will be coming back tomorrow. 10/10 HIGHLY recommend!!

We found this little restaurant on Yelp while visiting Edinburgh and we're very pleased with our choice to visit. The food was excellent the service was superb and friendly we loved the area it was in I had the full Scottish breakfast and everything on my plate was delectable my daughter had toast and beans and is now a fan. We look forward to going here again when we visit Scotland in the future

    Such a cute storefront!

This was a lovely dine-in experience (back in December). The woman helping us was very kind and patient. The beans + toast was exactly what was needed on the chilly day. Cant remember what my friend ordered but she liked it too! If you are in the area and are looking for a homely meal, I recommend!

Mmmm hot chocolate with lovely white and pink marshmallows!

After going to the wrong end of William St (thanks Yelp's silly map), we finally found Laura's and it was worth the wait. A sweet little place with a few small table rounds and a longer bar against the wall, it was more than enough for a sit down. I ordered the full Scottish breakfast and husband ordered a ham croissant and hot chocolate. My full breakfast came out with all the trimmings overflowing the plate: fried egg, beans, pancake, hash brown, mushrooms, bacon, sausage, haggis, corned beef, black pudding, toast and coffee! Talk about FULL. :) Everything was great - even the black pudding, which I ate until I made the mistake of asking what was in it. :P Rookie tourist. Husband's hot chocolate was beautiful and brimming with whipped cream and white and pink marshmallows. Laura (I assumed that was her name?) was lovely and friendly. The prices were much more reasonable than any recommendations from our hotel and I'd definitely lead people here for a proper authentic meal!

Laura's Kitchen was like a breath of fresh air. Delicious scones, croissants and bakery items all homemade. I had the egg, croissant and bacon dish which was so tasty! My husband had been here in December and brought my daughter and I back to enjoy!! Prices are great and food is delicious!!

This is indeed a hidden gem. I was staying at a nearby budget hotel and didn't fancy their breakfast offering much, and am very glad I found Laura's Kitchen. Lovely coffee, a decent plateful of food and very friendly service. I'd certainly come back again.

THE GOOD: PESTO PRESSED SANDWICH - mozzarella, almond pesto,…read moresun-dried tomatoes, and spinach. I love pesto, and this was pesto perfection! The pesto was fragrant, it packed a bold basil flavor, and they used a generous amount! The pesto was made with almonds instead of pine nuts. Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference. The multi-grain bread was a good, hearty choice. I liked that they gave me the option to have the sandwich pressed. I gladly said yes, as nothing brings a sandwich together better. ;) The side salad was a pleasant surprise. It was a spinach salad with balsamic vinegar and sunflower seeds. It was a great way to squeeze in some extra veggies! The only thing I would change is to add more sun-dried tomatoes. Vegan cheese doesn't always have the best melting abilities, but I was okay with that. THE BAD: The cupcake was dense and flavorless. The only good thing about it was the icing. The cappuccino tasted burnt. It was the worst I've had during my entire European trip. My sandwich was good, but unfortunately my overall experience was terrible. I have never had worse customer service than I did at Chapter One Coffee Shop. The disrespect I received was flabbergasting. It truly made me feel awful. I wanted to leave, but my need for caffeine overpowered my desire to walk out. After I sat down to finish my cappuccino, I thought maybe it was just me, maybe I was overthinking. However, shortly after, an employee came to my table and apologized on the other employee's behalf. That was nice and validating. It confirmed my feelings and experience. Trust me, I get that working in the service industry is difficult. Nevertheless, there's no excuse for that type of behavior. It put a sour taste in my mouth, and everything I ate was tainted. You can watch my visit to Chapter One and see all of the vegan food I ate in Edinburgh on my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pw-0mh0q3iM&t=1s

While the marjoity of sandwich bars in the area are functional takeaway establishments, Cucina caters for people who want to make a pit stop to rest their wearies. It is airy and spacious, especially considering the size of business space it's working in. There are some wooden tables dotted around so you can kick back rather than feeling hustled out the door. Cucina offers the standard sandwich shop menu of panini's and sandwiches, but leans towards continental, mediterranean fillings such as a selection of cheeses and roasted veg. There are a few options for main courses and a great selection of salads if you fancy being healthy! With the pretty butterflies dotted over the cream wallpaper and the chilled-out ambient atmosphere, Cucina is a very appealing option if you fancy a nice place to sit in, with a healthy, varied (but affordable) menu.

Let's just say that I am perfectly capable of making poached eggs on toast and yet there is just something about how LC does it that makes me a true devotee. Although, that's not what got me hooked. THAT pleasure went to their Thai chicken salad box. It's food that's got flavour - real flavour, not added in by salt, sauces or cheese! And don't get me started on their delicious potato salad... Basically, you walk in and are met with an array of fresh, colourful, wonderful food, which distracts you from the chalk-filled blackboard menu walls - there are over 50 choices of filling, neatly organised into 'brief affairs', 'happy marriages' and so on. My current addiction is their vanilla lattes (I'm not sure what they're doing differently but it's a.may.zing!), and it's very hard to resist their home-made cakes, muffins, brownies and other treats. It's a homely little place that feels lived in but also has a cafe feel. Regulars can often be overheard chatting with the girls who run it and cookbooks fill the wee stand by the couches in the window section. The only thing that even remotely detracts from it is that the service is sometimes a little slow; but this is mostly due to how busy it can be and that a lot of things are cooked fresh on the premises. It's a wee haven and now I've got a hankering for poached eggs on that wonderful thick-cut home-made wholemeal toast...

The breakfast rolls are always massive and stuffed with whatever greasy goodness you're in the mood for, all for an extremely reasonable price. The staff are the best thing about this place. I'm used to the whole vegan-gluten free thing but sometimes I want healthy food thats not necessarily vegan or vegetarian. Gram's totally fit the bill in this respect.
