    veggie soup and chicken sandwich
    Eakan G.

They make sandwiches the way you want. They have amazing coffee and snacks available in store. This is a pretty nice place to sit with a friend for a conversation over a burrito/enchilada/sandwiches on paninis or toasties/shortbreads/pastries. I love the soups there. And had it every day when I was in Edinburgh with some veggie paninis. Lovely staff too. It has rock theme posters all around the place.

    Finally...the perfect latte!

THE GOOD: PESTO PRESSED SANDWICH - mozzarella, almond pesto,…read moresun-dried tomatoes, and spinach. I love pesto, and this was pesto perfection! The pesto was fragrant, it packed a bold basil flavor, and they used a generous amount! The pesto was made with almonds instead of pine nuts. Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference. The multi-grain bread was a good, hearty choice. I liked that they gave me the option to have the sandwich pressed. I gladly said yes, as nothing brings a sandwich together better. ;) The side salad was a pleasant surprise. It was a spinach salad with balsamic vinegar and sunflower seeds. It was a great way to squeeze in some extra veggies! The only thing I would change is to add more sun-dried tomatoes. Vegan cheese doesn't always have the best melting abilities, but I was okay with that. THE BAD: The cupcake was dense and flavorless. The only good thing about it was the icing. The cappuccino tasted burnt. It was the worst I've had during my entire European trip. My sandwich was good, but unfortunately my overall experience was terrible. I have never had worse customer service than I did at Chapter One Coffee Shop. The disrespect I received was flabbergasting. It truly made me feel awful. I wanted to leave, but my need for caffeine overpowered my desire to walk out. After I sat down to finish my cappuccino, I thought maybe it was just me, maybe I was overthinking. However, shortly after, an employee came to my table and apologized on the other employee's behalf. That was nice and validating. It confirmed my feelings and experience. Trust me, I get that working in the service industry is difficult. Nevertheless, there's no excuse for that type of behavior. It put a sour taste in my mouth, and everything I ate was tainted. You can watch my visit to Chapter One and see all of the vegan food I ate in Edinburgh on my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pw-0mh0q3iM&t=1s

The full breakfast is full of taste which made me crave more their vegan haggis. The cappuccino could be a little better but overall it's a nice place to sit have a coffee and get on with your life. The girls working are nice and attentive. Our experience was so good that we had breakfast there twice. Highly recommend.

While the marjoity of sandwich bars in the area are functional takeaway establishments, Cucina caters for people who want to make a pit stop to rest their wearies. It is airy and spacious, especially considering the size of business space it's working in. There are some wooden tables dotted around so you can kick back rather than feeling hustled out the door. Cucina offers the standard sandwich shop menu of panini's and sandwiches, but leans towards continental, mediterranean fillings such as a selection of cheeses and roasted veg. There are a few options for main courses and a great selection of salads if you fancy being healthy! With the pretty butterflies dotted over the cream wallpaper and the chilled-out ambient atmosphere, Cucina is a very appealing option if you fancy a nice place to sit in, with a healthy, varied (but affordable) menu.

La Cucina is brilliant. I'm literally lost for words when trying to describe some of their food -…read moreit's too good to reduce with cliche; the appropriate superlatives escape me. Let's just say that I am perfectly capable of making poached eggs on toast and yet there is just something about how LC does it that makes me a true devotee. Although, that's not what got me hooked. THAT pleasure went to their Thai chicken salad box. It's food that's got flavour - real flavour, not added in by salt, sauces or cheese! And don't get me started on their delicious potato salad... Basically, you walk in and are met with an array of fresh, colourful, wonderful food, which distracts you from the chalk-filled blackboard menu walls - there are over 50 choices of filling, neatly organised into 'brief affairs', 'happy marriages' and so on. My current addiction is their vanilla lattes (I'm not sure what they're doing differently but it's a.may.zing!), and it's very hard to resist their home-made cakes, muffins, brownies and other treats. It's a homely little place that feels lived in but also has a cafe feel. Regulars can often be overheard chatting with the girls who run it and cookbooks fill the wee stand by the couches in the window section. The only thing that even remotely detracts from it is that the service is sometimes a little slow; but this is mostly due to how busy it can be and that a lot of things are cooked fresh on the premises. It's a wee haven and now I've got a hankering for poached eggs on that wonderful thick-cut home-made wholemeal toast...

I had seen the whole raw and gluten free focus they had and had been intrigued to see how good this would be. Plus it was around a 10 min walk from Chez Moi so perfect. The whole raw thing tends to be associated with being vegan in an uber healthy kind of way. I'm used to the whole vegan-gluten free thing but sometimes I want healthy food thats not necessarily vegan or vegetarian. Gram's totally fit the bill in this respect. The cakes look and taste amazing with many vegan and gluten free options so nice tick in the box. Some cool flavoured sodas are also available. I was hungry though so I went for one of the salads but loved that these weren't pure vegetables and you could get chicken, beef or salmon too. Yum, huge portion with (for me) lots of salmon and rainbow colours of veggies. I felt super healthy having a lovely balanced meal. I couldn't resist without trying the cake so got a strawberry & cream cheesecake which was beautiful. I was probably around £13 for my salad, soda and cake. There's not a huge amount of seats so you may have to lurk until someone leaves although take away is available. Great addition to Haymarket with lovely options and helpful staff if you have dietary requirements and need to double check what is suitable.
