How can you not like a saucy egg sandwich for breakfast? Me and my homie went here on a whim recently. The girls of our group ditched us to do some shopping and had wanted to get up super early to look at nature and walk around the city. Man it was so nice sleeping in. But obviously gotta get some grub at some point. That's when I saw The Painted Rooster was literally up the street from our Bnb. Very cute place. Service was cool just like the decor but definitely had to highlight Croque Madame. I had never had it before but loved every bit of it. It reminds me a giant Eggs Benedict but the egg isn't necessarily poached. I love Eggs Benny so it was easy for me to devour this dish. Putting an egg on top of swiss cheese with a Bechamel sauce just sounds right. Since there's Swiss, of course you gotta have ham with it because Cubano's are a thing...Wait that's it!! It's like if you combine a Cubano with an Eggs Benedict. That's Croque Madame! If you like either of those, you'll have to give this one a try! read more

I came to The Painted Rooster for my last breakfast out as part of my Scotland Heritage Travel Trip in July 2019. The plan for the day was to do a bunch of walking around Edinburgh in the morning to afternoon, so I was looking for a filling breakfast that wasn't so much food that it was uncomfortable to walk. The Painted Rooster became the choice for the morning because it wasn't too far from my hotel, was open at 8 a.m., and it looked like I could still get some blood pudding as part of my breakfast. A doorway off the street serves as the main entrance, then I took the stairs downstairs to the ordering area, kitchen, and seating area. It wasn't very busy when I arrived so I got to choose where I sat. The seating area is rustic in ambiance. A pitcher/bottle of water was provided to my table which I appreciate because I tend to drink a lot of water when eating out, especially if I am alone - a way to pass the time. Service was friendly and ordering simple and straightforward. My order was a breakfast sandwich loaded with a fried egg, bacon, and black (blood) pudding. I was pretty stuck on having blood pudding on my last breakfast out in Scotland because I came to love it so much while traveling in the country. This sandwich hit the spot in terms of quantity and flavor, the sweet taste of the blood pudding paired well with the salty bacon, and fried egg. Twas the perfect bite before an active morning. Pricing was fair, especially as a traveller on a budget. Overall an entirely satisfying last breakfast out in Scotland. read more

This was hand's down the best breakfast I had during my trip to Edinburgh, and we ate at a lot of places. I got the traditional breakfast with bacon, toast, two poached eggs, and fried mushrooms. My husband got toast with scrambled eggs. Everything was prepared to literal perfection and as someone who usually finds restaurant portions too generous, I couldn't stop eating. Portions were perfect, leaving enough room to buy some shortbread and other sweets! The staff are friendly and helpful, and delivered everything in a timely manner! this was my family's first stop for food in Scotland and it absolutely blew us away. the servers were very friendly and accommodated us when we asked to get lunch before noon/midday. the place is very cute and a bit snug as far as seating if you're in the main dining room, but a hidden gem in Edinburgh. i cannot stress enough, the food here was absolutely amazing and we will be coming back on our next visit to Edinburgh. 1000/10 would recommend. read more

came in with a group of 6, opted for seating 4 & 2 since it wasn't space for us all which wasn't a big deal. ordered at the same time, yet only the 2 got their food in a timely manner and the other 4 not so fast but we understood because there's more of us. 45 minutes passed, restaurant cleared up, people that came in ordered and received their food. we were the only people in the restaurant with still no food, servers walking passed us and not even acknowledging. once mentioned to them the guy serving said he forgot to put it through the line. something that could've been fixed if he would of checked on our table. i'm not one to leave a review, but when the service is this bad and nothing is done about it something has to be said. read more

This is our second time visiting Edinburgh. Found this gem in pursuit of a good cup of coffee. The ladies that work here are friendly and helpful. Food came out warm, delicious and looking beautiful. Very cute breakfast/brunch/lunch spot. Group of 5, seated immediately but there's only 1 or 2 tables for bigger groups. Delicious coffee with plant milk options, I got the pumpkin spice latte with oat milk and it was the best I've ever had! I also had the mashed avocado with two poached eggs, which was hearty, delicious and came quickly. The only reason it's 4/5 is for the lack of space for bigger groups, everything else is a 5/5. I went to Painted Rooster thinking I was looking for a place called The Caffeine Drip. Turns out the latter had closed a while back and the space taken over by the former. Well, the meal made it worth my while. The Rooster is still a very vegan friendly place with many dishes and sides to choose from. I opted for the breakfast special which included 2 free range eggs, salad with a generous helping of avocado slices, grilled chestnut (or what we call in the US - button) mushrooms and vegan bacon. I probably could've gone full off vegan by substituting the beans for the eggs but I didn't think about it until after I ordered. (It wasn't an option on the menu so maybe the owner should think about that.) The meal was absolutely delicious. Mushrooms were grilled to perfection. The salad had a tasty dressing and the whole thing came with toast! And the peppermint tea was very strong with a generous potful of hot water. The two women who worked there were very nice and the decor lovely. It was quiet when I was there (about 11 am) but it started to get noisier and more crowded as I left (about 12:30). It's July 6, 2019. We arrive about 10 minutes before opening and we're first to arrive and first in the door. Unfortunately, pretty much everyone who arrived AFTER us was served BEFORE us. In fact, the group of 6 people who were behind us walking in the door were actually EATING before the waitress even came over to see us. Another group of 6 was also served prior to us and I have no idea when they arrived. So to sum up for you: Arrived at open (9:00am), order taken at 9:32, food arrives at 9:48. So my review is that the service absolutely sucks, but all the people who came in after us, ordered, received their food and left before we received our food will probably think the place was great. Food was OK. The servers were actually lovely and sweet. It's just that the service was horrible. read more
