I'm from out of town. I posted on a Facebook cycling group here in Phoenix that I was looking for a nice road bike to borrow or rent from somebody. Some amazing saint of cycling lent me a full carbon Orbea for free! So, then I needed a tuneup. Onto Yelp I went! First highly rated shop on Yelp, NOT Brass Monkey, wanted $85 for a tuneup and was going to take several days to do the work. I've never paid $85 for a tuneup in my life, and when I asked the kid what I get for that, he struggled to explain. None of it was out of the ordinary. My next call was Brass Monkey. Mike, the owner, answered the phone and was a whiz. He said a full tuneup was $45, and he then explained everything they'd do, which is more than I've gotten from some tuneups elsewhere. So I asked how long it would take. Mike said they turn around work in 24 hours. They were working on 4 bikes at the moment, but they could still hit the 24-hour turnaround. When I dropped off the bike, the neighborhood seemed a little shady. It was nighttime, and the front door on McDowell was locked. They waved me around to enter the back door, off a dark alley. It was Tom who received my bike. The shop seemed like a throwback to the 1970's or thereabouts. I told him that I'd spoken with Mike about a tuneup. So, he wrote my name and phone number on a notepad, and I left them with somebody else's bike. It was only after I left that I wondered if it was wise to leave a nice bike with these guys with no proof that I'd even left it there. Oh well! I trusted them. The next morning about 10 AM, the phone rang. It was Mike--the owner. The bike was ready for pick up. I asked what all he did, and he went into detail talking about all the little things he did. He was a cycling nut, I could just tell. When I arrived to pick up the bike, it looked beautiful. Even the rubber on the tires was cleaned up. Everything was cleaned, lubed, and working perfectly. I took it for a spin after paying, and it was great. Also when I picked up the bike, I chatted with Mike for a bit about bikes--everything from working on bikes to comparing Shimano to SRAM to Campy drivetrains, and he was very well versed. He has an affinity for classic steel bikes, and he talked about trying to find them on Craigslist. We talked about Minneapolis, where I'm from, because he has a sister up there. He's a genuinely nice and friendly guy, and I felt good doing business with him. The bottom line here is that these dudes know bikes, they do quality work, and you'll feel better doing business with them instead of some giant bike shop with a bunch of unskilled teenagers working on your bike and charging you too much. read more

This place is a gem and well loved in my neighborhood. I brought in a Trek hybrid bicycle I had stored in my shed for five years to get it spruced up. My bicycle lights were dead, tire tubes not functioning and I was worried my rubber tires would need replaced for how my bike had been leaning on deflated tires for so long. I went to look at new bike lights not knowing mine ran on batteries. Instead of selling me new they showed me they could just replace the batteries. They kept my bike overnight and the next day it looked brand new. The only extra things it needed were new tubes. The whole process was super affordable and I'm stoked to give my bike new life! These guys are enthusiasts and kind-hearted, they were a pleasure to work with, and their shop is full of character and vintage bikes. If I could give this place a zero I would. Spent over $500 to get my girls vintage bike fixed and restored and a rookie mistake made by this shop caused damage to a tire and yet more to fix. The owner of the shop said he couldn't help us fix the damage once he actually showed up for work an hour and a half past quoted business hours. Unbelievably poor customer service. The last time, a few weeks ago, I was refused service for a tire repair because they didn't have 26 inch tubes. "I don't know when I'll get them in." It happens to be between work and home, plus it's easy to get to being located near the 10 and the 51. The guys who work here are pretty chill and laid back. Plus they know their stuff. I would've been able to do most of the work necessary, but there was a problem with a brake line that I couldn't figure out. The Brass Monkey Bike Shop isn't your typical bike store lined with hundreds of expensive, name brand bikes. This is my go to spot for my biking needs whether it be tune-ups or biking accessories. The two owners who run this shop are down to earth human beings and are always keen to help. Came in today to diagnose a front wheel that would always go flat after buying new tubes. Quickly found out that the thorn was stuck deep into the wheel therefore puncturing the tube. Okay guys, I brought my road bke here for a headset adjustment. Right off the bat Mike got up and started working on my bike. I just didn't expect that. My bike was completely dusty from siting in storage. Mike wiped my bike down with some kind of bike lust. My bike was pretty shiny afterwards. Mike also adjusted my front deraileur. All this would of cost me about fifty to seventy dollars at a regular bike shop and a zero chance of it being worked on right away. The cost for that work was rediculously LOW! So low in fact I left a decent little tip. About the shop: If your expecting a large selection of bikes, you will be disappointed. The focus here seems to be on vintage bikes and customs. They seem to focus on road bikes in particular. My review was based on service. So if you need a couple of adjustments or a tune up, you may want to cheat on your bike shop and look into this place. read more

Several days ago, I went in to find a particular part for my bike. I was told that an order is coming in and should arrive in a couple hours. This was at 2 pm. I went back at around 7 pm. The shipment did not arrive. Was told to come back in a couple days. Went back in two days later. No part. In fact, I was told the part I was needing was not even ordered.
