This is the Gelato place, we walked a mile to get gelato and just beat the rush. the flavors were emasculate. I got the strawberry honey and espresso brownie in the 4 oz cup and they were super generous with the servings. The strawberry flavor was really strong and the sweetness definitely came from the honey. i was dubious about the honey flavor but it stood out on its own really well. the espresso brownie flavor was equally good. The coffee flavor was not overwhelming and the brownie chunks were moist and tasty. My problem with ice cream fillings is that the chunks become rock solid but the brownie here was perfect. The texture reminded me more of ice cream than gelato but i would definitely go back again! read more

Roasting strawberries isn't something I'd ever think to do, but if you think about it from the culinary perspective, it makes a ton of sense! Strawberries, if they're any good, are high in sugar, and when sugar is heated at a high enough temperature it caramelizes. If it caramelizes too much, it burns, but if you stop it at just the right point you develop a rich, complex, roasty, and sweet flavor that enhances the natural flavors of the fruit itself, and that's exactly what the gelato magicians did at Bonta when developing their signature flavor! Yep. All that explanation for one item in the case, and there were about 10+ staples on their board along with another 10+ seasonal specials, like the Chocolate Hazelnut made with Oregon grown filberts! Basically I wanted to try them all, which the awesome staff would have happily obliged, but I settled on a combo of the roasted strawberry and the chocolate hazelnut. Classic, I know, but certainly not boring at Bonta. My only pro-tip is that no one single person really NEEDS the 5 oz cup, which is only 1oz bigger than their smaller size, but it's more fun! It was very busy so there wasnt many places to sit; luckily, the shop opens up to an interior that leads to other restaurants. So we found a few places to sit in those halls. The gelato seemed pretty rich in flavor. It was fairly creamy- I've had some gelato that was a bit more icy than it was creamy. But nonetheless, the flavor was definitely something. I'm not sure how many gelato places are out in Bend, but this is a stop that must be on your list at least. I think what helps them stand out are the other flavors that say "oregon". There were several farm names associated with various ingredients, which I'm assuming are relatively locally sourced. They have seasonal rotating flavors as well. This is my first time having gelato ice cream and it was absolutely amazing! I have extremely sensitive stomach and I noticed after having this ice cream my stomach was doing absolutely fine. The one thing I would say is I feel extremely healthy after eating this vegan ice cream. I ended up having a chocolate coconut ice cream, and a peanut butter ice cream! Which was absolutely amazing. We ended up testing three different types of ice cream and I wish I can have all of them! You can pick from a size 4 ounce to size 5 ounce. I highly recommend this place if you haven't had gelato ice cream like myself I can never go back to normal ice cream now! This is the type of place that I would love to bring my kids because it is extremely healthy and worth the money and the wait. We were here around 6 PM and there was a decent line which is always saying a good thing about a business. It's not often that you're invited to sample one flavor after another without eye-rolling or exasperated expressions, but each of the friendly staff encouraged all 4 of us to try flavors until we found the right one. No pressure. The lemon was deliciously refreshing, the coconut lime was a subtle sweet-citrus blend, but I landed on the creamy coconut chocolate. The others in my family enjoyed lemon, salted caramel and rootbeer (the only non-vegan out of the ones we tried). The small size was plenty. If we weren't already full from dinner, we probably would have added some of the toppings. Sadly, we won't be able to come back since we aren't local, but I highly recommend Bonta to anyone who's got even a tiny bit of a sweet tooth. read more
