The ambiance of this place is really nice, beautiful inside. However the food left much to be desired. We got chips and salsa, horchata, a chicken bowl, and steak fajitas. The chips were clearly not homemade, and the pineapple salsa was terrible - the red and green salsas were nice though with good flavor and spice. The chicken bowl was absolutely disgusting. My pregnant wife was unable to eat it because the chicken was rock hard, like it was cooked a week ago, and there were also some weird collard greens that were inedible and completely out of place in the bowl. She checked the menu and the collard greens weren't listed in the ingredients, very disappointing. The steak fajitas were overcooked, not terrible but at least edible after an afternoon of mountain biking. Finally the horchata was also okay, but it definitely could've used more cinnamon and flavor. Not because it's super fresh or even fun. I like the fact that they up charge for the ingredients we could buy at a grocery store and we do the work, just like we would at home. Haven't been to Crested Butte in a while so decided to check out some restaurants while I was here with my family. Bonez offered an exciting atmosphere as well as respectful staff members. Our server Carly was awesome and we felt very welcomed. I ordered the carne asada tacos and they were delicious. Spicy, but in a delectable way. We also ordered chips and guacamole which you smash and mix on your own (I thought this was a very cool feature). I will say their drinks are a little pricey but that's what you sign up for when you come to mountain towns. The only down side of this restaurant was the fact that we chose our timing poorly. We came at like 6:00 and there was a long wait but we were able to have drinks on the patio while we waited. Overall great experience! Would recommend. read more

This is such a cool spot! The day of the dead and southwestern decor is on point. You enter the building and you immediately feel transported to somewhere in Central America. I especially loved all of the twinkling lights and the entire bookshelf wall in the back. The food was delicious- we ordered the queso and guac as appetizers. They brought out the guac in a mortar and pestle that we made to our own liking with adding salt, pepper and lime. We each ordered two tacos: a medley of carnitas, cod, shrimp and chicken. We came in the other night for taco Tuesday - and it was our first visit in. I like the old/converted building and the overall vibe. We were seated at one end of a long communal high-top table near-ish the bar area with glass bottles hanging from the ceiling. We started with house margaritas (delicious but a touch on the boozy side) and an Irwin beer. The DIY guacamole is a must - it comes out in a lava style bowl with a pestle - and spices. Lots of fun to mix/mash it up and flavor to taste. Main courses - I went with the Hawaiian poke bowl (super delicious) - it had fresh ahi, tamari, spanish rice, cabbage, kale slaw, green onion, pickled ginger, citrus aioli, avocado, mango salsa, and lime. It was a perfectly sized dinner portion, as was the Bonez Bowl with shrimp. The Carnitas enchiladas were huge (see photo) as was the Quesadilla salad. This was our third time here just because they have decent margaritas. We've ordered different dishes all 3 times, and are always underwhelmed. This time was by far the worst. We ordered the salsa trio, then the chicken tinga and carnitas tacos. The chicken tinga tacos had zero flavor. They were awful. The carnitas tacos were barely better, but the pork was way too dry. The green and pineapple salsa were ok, but the red lacked any flavor at all. The chips seemed stale. The food is way overpriced for the quality. This is an insult to mexican food. I've been coming to Bonez for 3 years now and love this place! The margaritas are strong (I recommend the Cadillac) and the Mexican dishes are absolutely delicious. My recommendation from the waitress this last visit was to try the carnitas enchiladas, and they did not disappoint! Weirdly, one day my shrimp taco came with a mango salsa on it and the next day it did not. I had to ask for it even though it is in the description. The elote and queso were also delicious! The service and location are great. The biggest bummer was how much my family and I were looking for forward to the frozen drinks. According to their menu they are famous for them. It was super busy when we dropped by here. We sat outside and were a little uncomfortable with the closeness of the seating . It's kind of funny but my husband literally got splattered in his eye when the person next him cut into her enchilada. Again they were super busy but the service was very very slow even to get a first drink and then to order etc. I liked the chips and the salsas were interesting. My husband liked the pineapple jalapeño salsa. I was a fan of the verde salsa . For dinner I tried the blackened shrimp tacos and they were so-so. Not very flavorful. The mango dip was supposed to provide heat but to me was nothing , now my husband did like it . He ordered the steak tacos and they were bland. Bonez is fun place to visit! The margaritas are very strong. Believe what they say on the menu about the heavy hands. The traditional margarita is very good and classic. I also got the spicy margarita which was great as well. It had a good kick, but not too spicy that you need to down a whole glass of water. After two margaritas, I had my fill on alcohol. We stopped in during the afternoon to find out the best time to arrive for dinner to be seated right away on a Sunday - 5:30pm. The staff was welcoming and friendly. Our waiter, Lance, bent over backwards to accommodate our requests. The margaritas were so strong I needed to cut mine with lemonade and offered to pay for a glass. Lance brought the lemonade gratis and did a fancy little pour back and forth until the marg was just right, tasty. They were out of the highly recommended DIY guacamole so we had the queso and chips instead, not your traditional queso but delicious. Yeah so a two hour wait for extremely subpar "carne asada" tacos, strong margs (mmm...ok) and half assed kids chicken quesadillas. We really had high hopes - after all we're one of 100 people on the waiting list! Quoted 60mins - so we waited (walked around a bit)...turned they said they quoted us 80mins when we returned in a hour. Okay, we'll wait...80mins comes and goes and still hanging out with our two kids (9 & 7). Almost 8:30 we finally get sat. The server recommends the Queen marg - we do it b/c: need drink - Now! Basically tequila, soda and lime - not really a marg, but it was "get-you-buzzed-okay." My wife and I really wanted carnitas (Ben's Bowl and Carnitas Enchiladas) - but of course the 100 people before us ate through their carnitas supply. So, no carnitas. Carne asada tacos it is. Kids order chicken quesadillas (ez-pz). Food comes in about 5 minutes (sus ). The carne asada tasted like a Philly cheesesteak - bland and just some DIY lime to help you out. The kids' quesadillas were packed with bland, shredded chicken breast - clearly cooked in water or stock so that made the whole thing a soggy mess. They are about 6 bites. This was an ok place at best. Colorado has so many excellent Mexican style food eateries that I would say 3-stars is generous for here. We tried the guacamole and it was ok. The white queso was very plain and average at best. The southwestern Caesar salad was ok. The California enchiladas were good, but way overpriced for 2 enchiladas. The street tacos were ok also. All of the dishes were bland and nothing to write home about. I would say that the inside of the restaurant was really cool, but everything else was average at best. So glad we snagged an outside table on a beautiful Saturday evening in June! The guac was well worth it and we ate it all despite the large portion. I loved all the tacos we tried but the shrimp (or maybe the carnitas) was my favorite. Skinny margs were great, but for my last drink I went for the Cadillac margarita and wished I hadn't. Cloyingly sweet and I should've known I don't like OJ in my margs Loved that they opened up a lot of outside seating during the summer of Covid, and the "drink stand" so you can order drinks outside while you wait. For the general public: food was fine, service was fine, ambiance was fine, wait time was long for our group of 9 (over 1.5 hours, even though their website says they can easily accommodate large parties, and even after waiting almost 2 hours they wound up splitting us up into 2 different tables far away from each other). I'd suggest going early and putting your name down and grabbing a drink across the street at Kochevars. For management: I have to say this was one of the more disappointing experiences I have ever had. As I mentioned above, we waited almost 2 hours (were originally told 1-1.5 hours) and couldn't even all sit together, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. We came back after 1.5 hours of waiting and asked if our table was ready. The host said they were waiting on a large party who had paid but was lingering. We went over to the party and politely explained the situation, and the party explained they had been waiting to pay the check.... slightly embarrassed and aggravated, we reported this back to the host who sent someone to retrieve the check. The party then leaves, and the staff clears the table, but the host proceeds to sit a different group at the table. What??? Now very aggravated, we approached the host and asked why she sat a different party at our table, especially after we asked the previous party to vacate so that we could sit. At this point the "manager" (my understanding is his name is Andrew, he has a samurai bun haircut) decides to chime in and attempts to blame not only the host but additionally us, the customer, for this debacle. He said our party came back before they had texted us about our table which confused the host, and this led the host to think we were the party ahead of us waiting to be seated. The host was obviously flustered, and I can sympathize with an honest mistake, but to then be told it was our fault really left a poor taste in our mouths. The host's solution was to seat us at 2 different tables, which we begrudgingly accepted out of pure hunger, but before being seated I explained to the manager that we were frustrated and asked if there was anything he could do about the inconvenience and suggested a free round of drinks and his response was: "This was your fault and we will not be giving you a free round of drinks"... My first suggestion would be to take reservations for large parties. This would likely eliminate all of the confusion/unfortunate drama mentioned above. My second suggestion would be to re-evaluate who you have managing your restaurant. Good managers don't blame their staff and the customers/anyone but themselves for issues that arise, and certainly don't handle situations the way samurai bun did. read more
