An alluring and peaceful shop on North Ave, Bob Bob Sandwiches has excellent ambiance, with beautiful decorations and an overall soothing vibe. With a wealth of options before me, I decided to opt with the Char Siu Pork Bahn Mi, and the 8-count order of Korean Chicken Wings with rice. While the pork on the bahn mi was tender and flavorful, and the pickled vegetables were plenty, the mayo was relatively unimpressive while the bread didn't have the fortitude and crunch that any good bahn mi should. Adding some hoisin after the fact certainly helped though. The Korean Chicken Wings were perfectly cooked with a satisfyingly crunchy exterior, but the flavor itself didn't blow me away- I found that the sauce-soaked bed of rice below them provided more flavor than they did. All in all, a very solid experience, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back before trying other Vietnamese restaurants in the area.
Great pho! The beef broth is hearty! I have to try their sandwiches but I keep coming for the pho. They also do a great job at packaging for takeout.
I made an online order for three Banh mi sandwiches and my order wasn't ready when promised. I had to wait about 10 minutes and was given a parking ticket in the mean time. Obviously my fault but wouldn't have happened if I was in and out. Sandwiches were great though. My son ordered their Korean Philly cheesesteak and he wasn't a fan of the giardenaira. I was though. I loved it and would happily order for myself next time. My wife ordered their coconut curry chicken Banh mi. This one was good but not better than the Philly. I ordered their Char Siu Pork Banh Mi. This one was also very delicious. Wouldn't hesitate ordering this one again either. I also ordered their gyoza and these weren't that good. Very small and flavorless. Would not order these again, but I would definitely return.
Cute eatery. Took a little while to get our order, but we also came on a whim during prime lunch time. So take that with a grain of salt. What we got: Curry fries - Ooo I liked this a lot. The fries seem like a little battered or something. They have a great texture that's tender but still has some crisp. Definitely not the soggy, limp kinds if that's more your taste. I also really liked the curry flavor (my husband said it was so-so). It has a slight sweetness to it that I enjoyed--sometimes curry can be too intense. But I thought it went nicely with the fries (plus I may or may not have poured the leftover on some rice at home later). Lemongrass chicken bahn mi - This was fine. I think I wanted more lemongrass flavor though (but I like lemongrass a lot). The bread was a little too much for me--it was just slightly thicker than I prefer. But otherwise solid bahn mi. Classic bahn mi - Husband said he liked this. He loves paté and head cheese (???)--he said the texture of this was really nice, like jammy but savory. He said it has lots of flavor. Smoked salmon onigiri - Pretty good! Our kids love salmon onigiri. The smoked salmon was a little surprising, but a fun take on the traditional salted salmon.
This restaurant was a miss for me. I was hoping for spicier dishes because of the Vietnamese and pan Asian menu but the host explained they don't really make anything spicy, which was a red flag tbh. I was told the spiciest thing would be the Korean chicken wings. The wings were fried way too crispy and dried out and the sauce was drizzled over the rice rather than on the wings. The korokke which was also fried for too long. The beef curry fries are a good concept and have flavor but the execution needs help. It's way too much curry sauce so the fries become soggy. The pieces of beef are also super tiny. The bulgogi cheese steak was a total flop. The marinade for the beef tasted terrible. The giardianiera doesn't mesh well with the bulgogi flavor. It also looks like they may have microwaved the cheese because it became crispy rather than melted.
Local Vietnamese restaurant that has become our to-go in the area. I usually order beef pho noodles, noodle salads, and their shrimp spring rolls. Huge portions so I'm usually taking home leftovers or asking my partner for help. There's usually seating available with drivers coming in and out every so often for pick up orders. I personally haven't seen any groups hanging out with games but there are games and books available in their community bookshelf. Reasonably priced, consistent, comfort food that's nearby. I hope Bon Bon is here to stay! Especially because I'm curious about the rest of their menu (i.e. wings, loaded fries, etc).
Delightful Neighborhood Restaurant with Fabulous Food and Inviting Ambience This is such a delightful little restaurant! The food is extraordinary, and they have a larger menu than one would expect in a neighborhood cafe. The ambience is inviting, with lots of artworks on the walls and if you love books, you can sit in a table framed by a bookshelf full of interesting, artistic and philosophical offerings. The owners are lovely, the tables have good space between them, and the service is fast. This feels like it would become my neighborhood hangout it I lived in Chicago. I hope to be back there soon.
Bon Bon is a hidden gem. Amazing Vietnamese food. Wide variety of pho and the best wings in town. No joke, and with the rice, it's A+. It's a clutch take out place but there's plenty of room to eat inside as well. Their shrimp and tofu spring rolls are a perfect grab and go item. The peanut sauce is addicting. Friendly counter service. Highly recommend.
My sister and her boyfriend love Bon Bon sandwiches and I was so excited when my sister picked us up take out for us here today! She got me a tofu bahn mi and herself a seitan bahn mi, my mom had some type of bowl. They said their food was super spicy, but I didn't really think mine was! We also shared fries which were delicious! Would definitely recommend
I should have listened to the reviews? Yikes. I really wanted to love this place. It was okay - I probably wouldn't go back. Korean Philly Cheesestreak: The only saving grace? It was good, it was fine. It's a mix of bulbogi beef + cheese + giardiniera - nothing special. You can probably make this at home pretty easily. Mango Fruit Smoothie: Literally the WORST smoothie I've ever had. Ever. Ever. Ever. It tasted like Flintstone Vitamins... Yes. You know what I'm talking about. Absolutely awful.

Food: **banh mi here costs about $8-10, so more expensive than what I'm typically used to ***rating only the banh mi, not the other dishes Classic Vietnamese cold cut - 5/5 - loved it! A very delicious version of a classic style Vietnamese banh mi Char siu- 5/5 - loved it! Amazing, this left a great impression and would be a favorite for any meat lover Ginger chicken - 4/5 - savory, caramelized chicken, worth the try but I personally liked the other banh mis better Coconut curry chicken - 4.5/5 - very good; savory coconut flavor which had a light/thin sauce not creamy nor too sweet Bulgogi beef - 4.5/5 - very good; almost a 5 but had to take off a little because while eating it I paused to realize that it was as awfully sweet the marinade was. Tone down the sugar a little, guys! I've lived down the street from this place and I have so many regrets not coming in sooner! I tried their wings for the first time and I had to immediately write a review. When I tell you I am the most picky person when it comes to wings & these surprised me in the best wayyyyy! The quality (I don't like super slimy, veiny wings and these were not that at all) and crunch was IMMACULATE!! Highly recommend stopping here for lunch. It's super cute/hole in the wall type place. The owner or manager was extremely friendly and was giving me all the recommendations/tips. I can't wait to come back and try something new :) also who doesn't love a store that has the small bags of chips.

This isn't the kind of food I normally have a taste for, but I'm glad I finally stopped in and gave it a try. I got the Coconut Curry Seitan Bento ($15.95, 3% credit card surcharge). This is a vegan option that includes Coconut curry seitan over rice, korrokke, vegan gyoza, Japanese pickles, wintergreen salad with Japanese dressing and vegan miso soup. I found the miso soup to be extremely bland, but I don't know that I've had it before, so I'm not sure if this is how it's supposed to be. They have other vegan options as well, so I would definitely stop in if I had a craving for Asian food again. read more
Visited Bon Bon sandwiches hoping to cure a pho fix nearby instead of having to travel to Argyle. My husband, his friend and I visited here on a rainy evening. We stepped inside and it looked like no one was there. Almost as if it was closed. The staff were in the back of the kitchen, they weren't eager to greet us so we sat ourselves down and grabbed our own menus. It didn't really seem like staff wanted to work that day honestly. We viewed the menu and made our order at the register. My husband and his friend were dedicated to their pho fix but I decided to try their chicken banh mi instead. The great thing is that the bánh mì was ready pretty quickly. It was good. I appreciated that the bread was soft and the chicken had flavor (it just didn't taste the freshest). My husband's friend ordered a coffee and he liked it. The bowls of pho were dropped off to the table, it wasn't served. My husband and his friend had to pick their bowls of pho off the tray and serve themselves. My husband wasn't really a fan of the pho. The broth was okay. The noodles reminded him of chicken noodle soup. He didn't appreciate that there was an onion core in it either. It seemed like the restaurant was out of napkins. They did have a sink to wash your hands though. I think there was definitely a mismatch in expectations verses our experience. It was lacking a lot in hospitality. Bon Bon is a minimal frills Vietnamese spot which has a bit of a cafe vibe inside. The Thai tea is really good although the Vietnamese coffee doesn't hit the spot, it has a bit of an artificial vanilla flavoring to it. The shrimp spring roll is massive with fresh lettuce and veggies. The peanut sauce is pretty thick but the flavor is good. I'd recommend the spring rolls. The beef pho is decent. The broth was pretty good and the beef is okay. The lime they gave was completely dry and unsqueezable. The main complaint I have is there was way too many noodles in the bowl. The noodle to broth ratio was way off so you're racing with the noodles to drink all the broth. After a few minutes the broth is almost completely absorbed by the noodles. Overall it's still a decent spot to get your Thai tea fix. If it's a cold day and you're already in the area the pho is decent. It should be noted they do have a bathroom in the back which is nice. read more

Bon bon is good good. We enjoyed their veggie pho and banh mi sandwiches. The sandwiches come with different proteins and toppings, but they look very similar in the end. I had a slight preference for the seitan over the tofu, but either one is a good choice. It's a small and quiet place. I liked the atmosphere. read more

For us service is at least half the experience. The music was so loud it was almost impossible to hear the cashier to place my order. In fact I never actually made out what she asked me. My husband had to answer for me. And worse I don't know if the WiFi was out or not but the songs kept stopping and starting super annoying. There are a lot of vegan options which I appreciate but it's not very good. I got the lemongrass Tofu Banh Mi. It was fine but nothing special. We also had a rice ball which was not tasty at all and came with no instructions or even a plate. We asked how to eat and instead of answering the waiter just pointed to a photo. In the city on Saturday, and we randomly walked past this spot after another place we wanted to go was on a wait. We checked the menu for vegan options, and found quite a few. We decided to head in. The girl behind the counter was extremely helpful and also vegan, which always helps. The four of us got a ton of vegan food from the lemongrass/tofu sandwiches to the wings to the spring rolls. Check out the pics of the food we had. The dumplings and the Korokke were fantastic as well. We LOVED everything we got. Make this a regular stop in your Chicagoland vegan adventures. Overall, this place is great. This place has a "mom and pop" feel, in my opinion, and I love it. I highly recommend. I really, really enjoyed the food. The owner is super sweet and nice. I order two items: Coconut Curry Chicken Banh Mi Sandwich and the Shrimp Spring Rolls. They were both very delicious. The sandwich is HUGE. I can get two meals out of this sandwich (lunch and dinner). Additionally, the Shrimp Spring Rolls were very filling. I ordered via Door Dash (because I have some Door Dash credits). When I came in for pickup, I was in a rush. I wanted to get in-and-out. However, I noticed I forgot to order Thai Tea. The owner was kind and shared that he could give me a Thai Tea now, and I could pay the next time I come in. I'm sharing this because I was absolutely shocked at his kindness. His kind act will definitely have me return. (I ended up running to my car to grab my wallet to immediately pay because I would forget to pay later.) read more

I am beginning to stumble upon more spots in Wicker Park that I cannot wait to try. I was driving down North Ave and the "Bon Bon Vietnamese" sign flashed past. I inhaled and did a double take, realizing this meant I have banh mi access in close proximity. Mini victory. As I added BBVS to my Yelp bookmarks, I prioritized trying their food the next chance I had. This is what I ordered: 8 pc (full order) Korean Bon Bon Wings ($10.50) Char Siu Banh Mi ($6.95) Thai Iced Tea ($3.50) The 4 stars are for their banh mi. I'm a fan. If I ever want to swap out my lunch to pack a banh mi, I'll know where to order. The char siu pork was sweetly glazed. Every bite had some jalapeno and pickled vegetables. The next time I order here I'd request extra helpings of each because I like my sandwiches to have an extra kick. Bread and ingredients were fresh. Their sandwiches are delicious and affordable and I hope to try their other options soon: "Classic"; Lemongrass Chicken; Coconut Curry Chicken; Vietnamese Ham, Egg & Pate; Korean Bulgogi. Their Korean wings were served differently than I'm used to. The sauce was more tangy (like gochujang-red chili paste) than savory and garlicky which I prefer. While the wings were freshly fried and sauced, the dash of sesame seeds was a little too generous in my opinion. The chewiness of the brown rice, tanginess of the sauce and crunchiness of the sesame seeds were not my favorite combo. The vibe here reminds me of Wormhole Coffee, hip and eclectic, with (presumably) teenagers manning the cash register and filling the orders. When I phoned in for pick-up, I said, "Can I please have the char siu BBQ pork banh mi?" to which the response was, "it doesn't have barbecue sauce in it." This makes me smile as I type it. Honey, char siu means barbecued pork. I didn't actually say that, especially not with "honey" at the beginning. But I thought it. Which makes me hesitant to try their pho and ramen without preparing myself... for the food to be enjoyed through the lens of a hipster pan-asian restaurant in Wicker Park: Japanese/Korean/Vietnamese mixed in with Whole Foods or Native Foods. Vegans! I'm sure this can be a spot where you can comfortably dine out and get your banh mi with seitan and vegan mayo. They have kale salad, veggie bowls, and veggie wings as well. It's awesome to see so many veggie-friendly options. All in all, a solid 4 stars for stellar banh mi's and I will probably just stick to the sandwiches. read more

Such a great neighborhood find! I just moved and brought my family here. Tim and Jenny were so thoughtful and welcoming. We got beef pho, bugolgi bento, and ginger chicken banh mi. The broth was a great flavor and the pickled veggies on the banh mi were fresh and delicious! I will definitely come back and bring friends. read more
