A great place. It's on Ashland so parking is a crap shoot, but once you get in it's well worth it. It's a small family owned restaurant. Very clean. You're greeted when you walk in. We came and it was slow so we could sit where we wanted. Within 2 minutes a wait person came over with water and menu. She answered any questions we had about the food. OMG! They are so generous with the amount they give you. The hot and sour soup was the best I've ever had. Orange chicken was also good. The music was low but could be heard but they also had the World Cup on tv. The prices are reasonable. I am really pleased that I went there and I feel others would also enjoy the food. I have eaten here over 10 different times... Their dining room recently re-opened and although I have gotten take out in the past, the dishes are certainly yummier when eaten there. While there are other Chinese places in the area, this is definitely a neighborhood staple having been here for over 4 decades. I had to try the signature egg rolls and fried rice because everyone always raves about them and they are absolutely 10/10 (seriously!) I also tried the orange chicken, Hong Kong steak, chicken lo mein, stir fried fish with veggies, pepper garlic chicken, salt and pepper shrimp, hot and sour soup, egg foo young, egg drop soup, Singapore vermicelli, crab rangoon and the pot stickers. EVERY SINGLE DISH SLAPPED!! The service is always very friendly and the atmosphere is welcoming. The owner always has great recommendations and they serve cold beer and wine! Okay, I'm a fan! I've only ordered take-out here once on a whim, but I have a hunch that Mon Lung will be a more consistent presence in my life. It was getting late on a Tuesday night and I didn't have food prepared at home. My go-to Asian spot around the block was closed on Tuesdays so I was on the hunt for something quick, close, yet would hit the spot for Chinese comfort food. I remembered reading somewhere online that a chef really liked the chicken here. I wouldn't be able to tell you which chef or where I read this, but that fact always stuck in the back only head. I just didn't have the opportunity to venture to Mon Lung until now... since it was just far enough away to be outside of my usual radius for something quick. If you're paying by credit card, you would need to order online. Their website connects directly to slickmenus.com and it was really easy to order. I ordered: A small hot & sour soup A mapo tofu (one size) A large orange chicken I was very happy. This food was so comforting. In my opinion, there are maybe just 1 or 2 spots in Wicker Park that provide that authentic mom & pop style, cooked in a wok, don't need extra packs of fake soy sauce, comes-with-white-rice-without-needing-to-ask kinda place. I didn't order this famous chicken that a chef had mentioned before (I think it must be their "Mon Lung Chicken") so I'll have to order that the next time. I'm already eyeing their Hunan Beef, Hong Kong Steak, and Szechuan String Beans. A note: their hot & sour soup is on the sweeter side (versus sour) and that was new to me but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Their mapo tofu also had shrimp in it (also new for me) and had more of a gravy sauce versus a chili-oil and doubanjiang/ spicy bean sauce as the base. It was not spicy, but maybe their style is more distinctly Cantonese and mild? My habit is to always attribute a reason to something or at least try to find a reason but in this case I don't know. I still really liked the food. I feel that it is good in my bones and it's a variation of the food I grew up eating. To sum it up, Mon Lung is the perfect place for quick mid-week Chinese take-out ... AND they are open Tuesdays! read more

There's a viral TikTok video that state that you should look for a Chinese restaurant with 3.5 stars for the most authentic experience. I don't want to mess up Mon Lung's 3.5 rating, but I had to round up because I was very happy with my food. My friend and I ordered potstickers, shrimp fried rice, and cashew chicken. The potstickers were my FAVORITE. The breading on there was fantastic. The other dishes were solid too. Delivery was within the given timeframe. The delivery guy even started to go up the 60 stairs to get to my apartment after I buzzed him in. It was very thoughtful but frankly unnecessary because I told him I'd come down. (Ordered during COVID, using DoorDash Delivery) - 3.5 stars I ordered an Egg Roll, Spicy Shrimp Lo Mein, and Kung Pao Beef. Food was prepared quickly, and the delivery was fast. Prices seemed a tad high when I ordered, but the portions were actually quite large, so it was a better value than I initially thought. The Egg Roll was actually great. So many egg rolls get soggy when delivered, but this one was nice and crispy when it arrived. For the mains, I was disappointed that the Lo Mein noodles weren't the traditional thicker doughy-type Chinese noodles....they were the super thin ones you generally get with Singapore Noodles...but that's just a personal preference. Once I got used to the thin noodles, the Lo Mein was pretty good. It wasn't very spicy, even though I had asked for it to be, but after spicing it up, I liked the dish. The Kung Pao Beef was also disappointingly mild, and the beef itself didn't seem to be the best quality. And whereas I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of shrimp in the Lo Mein, the Kung Pao was almost all celery, onions, peppers, and mushrooms....not much beef or peanuts. My final test for Chinese food is how it tastes the next day, because I LOVE leftover Chinese food. These dishes actually improved as the flavors soaked in, so I preferred them the 2nd day. All in all, a decent meal, but I've got a lot of other Chinese delivery restaurants I prefer. Probably won't be ordering again. read more

We had a terrible experience. The food that's suppose to be 'spicy' was not even close. In fact it was bland, tasted like it was cooked with no salt. We ordered Tofu lo mein, veggie chow fun, kung pao veggi, beef skewers, pop stickers & bbq pork lo mein. Out of the 3 of us eating, neither of us liked anything. Nothing tasted fresh, or good. We had to ultimately throw most of it out. But I would not recommend to anyone that likes to simply just TASTE the food. I would especially like to say that the kung pao veggie was absolutely inedible. Didn't take any pics because they weren't worth taking. sorry about this review, but I just had to be honest. I have to laugh, because I am of Taiwanese descent and grew up in the Los Angeles area eating lots of Chinese food... yet, when I came to this restaurant, there were items on the menu that I've never heard of before... such as "kow". What the heck is that?? None of my Asian friends in California have ever heard of that either. When I asked the waitress what kow was, she looked at me and asked, "Have you never had Chinese food before?" OMG. :o I GREW UP EATING CHINESE FOOD. But Chinese food that my mom cooked and Chinese food from Chinese restaurants frequented by Chinese people. I didn't see any other Asians dining here at the time, which is what I look for as a measure of how authentic a place might be. When there's stuff like chop suey on the menu, I consider that the Americanized stuff and not really authentic Chinese cuisine. And isn't chop suey a dish made up in America that's just leftovers thrown together? Then a male server came by to explain that kow was mixed vegetables. But not before he made a lame joke that kow was not cow. :P I asked what was the difference between shrimp chop suey and shrimp kow and was told that they were both with mixed vegetables, but one had "harder" vegetables than the other. Uh... that didn't really tell me anything. Well then, if both dishes were essentially the same thing, I went for the chop suey because it was slightly cheaper. But then the waitress told me the shrimp is deep fried, so I switched to the kow instead. I guess she could figure that I wanted something healthier. So I ended up ordering the Shrimp Kow lunch special, which came with chicken fried rice and a deep-fried egg roll. It was aiight, standard American Chinese cuisine. The stir fry had that standard restaurant-quality glossy sheen that comes with cornstarch-thickened sauce. I don't eat Americanized Chinese food very often, so it was interesting to try this neighborhood joint while I was visiting Chicago. They give you plenty of food, so you definitely won't leave hungry. read more

I'm new to Chicago but my buddy claims this is some of his favorite Chinese food in the area (west town) so I was eager to try it. Was it good? Yeah! It was! Was it amazing? No... it was just solid, slightly Americanized Chinese. I had a delicious homemade egg roll with a distinct and subtle 5 spice type vibe going on in the background. My Ma Pao tofu was interesting. I've never had Ma Pao with a light brown sauce before. It was lighter in flavor than I'm used to and the shrimp were a nice touch with their sweetness. It was SUPER spicy, so take note when you see those little chili peppers on the menu. They are not fooling around. We weren't given chopsticks and the egg rolls came with hot mustard in little plastic packs. Yet when I went to pay, there was a sign behind the register for things like "homemade" hot sauce which makes me feel like a few more visits might change my opinion. Service was fast and my iced tea glass was always kept full, to the brim. It's a couple blocks from work so I'll be back but I can't say I'd make a special trip for Mon Lung. read more

I can't believe I have lived in this area for going on 25 years now, and this is the first time I have actually gotten food from here. I was taking a walk and I saw this place, and I was hankering for some Chinese food, so I thought why not. I walked in and ordered a Large Beef Chop Suey and an order of Egg Rolls. I usually get Beef Chop Suey to test the waters of any Chinese restaurant I visit for the first time. Plus it is usually my go to for Chinese food, or Chinese American food as the case may be. There was enough beef to justify the price point of the dish, it had the standard ingredients of bean sprouts, napa (cabbage), mushrooms, bamboo shoots in a light brown savory sauce. I thought it was well prepared well and cooked to perfection. I found it very good, and I definitely will be frequenting this location more now that I have found it. The only thing that I think would make the dish even more appealing would be the addition of some crunch factor, maybe water chestnuts or something, though that is just a personal preference. The Egg Rolls on the other hand weren't bad, but they could have had a little something more to them. read more

We ordered their "Sweet N Sour Tofu" online under the impression that it was going to be a tofu dish covered in sweet and sour sauce. No where online did it state that the majority of the dish was veggies and pineapple chunks in a soup. Upon receiving our order there were only 2 pieces of tofu in the container. We called the restaurant and the person we spoke to said "every dish from the soup and sour section comes with 8 pieces of protein the majority of the dish is vegetables and sauce" and that we just needed to "dig to the bottom". We reassured him that we did check but there was no other pieces of tofu found in the container. When we expressed that there was also some confusion with how the dish is listed online and that we would like a refund for the one item in the order he told us simply "to not order it again". Our request for a refund was denied because the staff member said "I don't understand what the refund would be for because you got what you ordered". I would like to be very clear that we will NOT be ordering from this establishment again. Staff was extremely dismissive and rude especially after we spent a total of $71.00 for our order. In terms of the rest of our order the food overall was underwhelming. Very disappointed with this experience. read more

I have been eating at Mon Lung for 25-30 years. I've lived in many different neighborhoods in the city and have not found a better local Chinese restaurant. They have the best Egg Foo Young I've ever had. Their House Special Fried Rice is spicy and delicious. The egg rolls are good too.
