I don't normally leave reviews or negative reviews at that , but I was a bit frustrated with the customer service. First of all, when we got there there were several open tables unseated. My fiancé, and I arrived at around 5:30pm as a walk in, we were given a wait time of 1 hr and 45 minutes. We understood that we'd have to wait since we were walk in, understandable. 2 hours go by and we didn't get a call, so we were worried we may have put the wrong number down. We went back 2 hrs later to the restaurant to ask about the table. The waitress told me that she could not seat us and is focused on reservations. I asked her what the wait time would look like then and she said she wasn't really sure, and that she would not be sending out txts to seat anyone. The only option I was given was that I could wait on the side and keep coming up to her to ask for a table. I understand, we should have scheduled a reservation but as a business if you're too busy to handle people, please don't check a walk in and provide a wait time just to tell me after 2 hours that you can't sit us. Never in my life have I been told that for a walk in. It absolutely frustrated me. I don't think I'll ever try to come back again after this. Anyways, the food looks good but if you want to absolutely eat here, I suggest that you set a reservation. Otherwise, don't waste your time. Hope this helps anyone that may try to walk in. read more

The food is great; I wish there were more than one vegetarian entree option. It was mole asparagus - the asparagus was cooked PERFECTLY, I loved it - but meant that overall in my meal I had way too much mole spice with the carrots for a starter. The carrots were also cooked perfectly, great texture in this dish, but the cumulative spice level was a LOT. (Side of sour cream or yogurt would help!) Overall, be very aware of what you are ordering relative to your personal heat tolerance. My teens thought even the salsa that came with the chips was spicy (I did not). My husband's pozole was very spicy while the fish tacos were not. My sangria was delightful and my teens thought their agua fresca and horchata were better than they were expecting. Bigger issue than the food is probably the service. The restaurant was packed on a Saturday night; we had a reservation and after waiting to check in were seated outside right away. It felt like a LONG time before we had a server swing by, and she was such a quiet speaker she was very hard to hear (my family agreed, it wasn't just me!). She also seemed miserable which cast a bit of a pall on our birthday evening. Six different staffers, including the other server in the patio area, came by with parts of the order; it felt very disjointed. Nobody checked on us after the food all arrived, and we did have a potential problem/clarification with the order. Many blips with the service/presentation, such as when the two non alcoholic drinks arrived, one had two straws in it and the other had no straw. The server looked at the glasses as she set them down, said something like, "ugh they messed that up", and was gone for a while getting another straw. "Straus" appears on the dessert menu three times and is spelled differently every time. Servers were bussing tables and resetting them. I am glad we tried it; judging from the crowd, it's doing great, but for me especially as a vegetarian, the prices compared to the experience don't necessarily merit a special trip to return. I have to start by saying that I really wanted to love Bombera. We came for our wedding anniversary & were seated at a table where chips and salsa were immediately put in front of us. Our waitress then asked if we wanted them taken away, which felt strange at the time but I later realized it was because they charge for the chips & salsa at the end. That up-charge was hella sus tbh so I'd be cautious about it since $8 ain't nothing and they make it seem complementary. Food wise, the carrot appetizer was hella good. outside of that though, we didn't enjoy the whole roasted chicken, sweet potato quesadilla, or fish tacos. Everything besides the carrots felt like it was missing depth of flavor or any real contrast. the carrots and salsas that were labeled as spicy were not spicy at all too but maybe it's cause they cater to a certain pallet. This is located in a pretty decent part of Oakland. Street parking wasn't bad, although you'd probably have to go a couple blocks away on a weekend. There's a patio seating area, and inside there's a bar and a dining room. The place is pretty small and not fancy, but the food is definitely worthy of its Michelin Bib Gourmand status. The food is elevated Mexican food with a modern touch. Every bite was flavorful and balanced. Even their chips and gauc somehow tasted richer. The menu is really creative, and there are so many more dishes I want to try. What we ordered: + Spicy carrots toasted almonds Misantla - carrots are roasted and soft, and they sit in a bed of black beans and chili oil. You taste the smokiness with a hint of spiciness. + Roasted chicken mojo de ajo (half) - chicken is roasted and tender, and it sits on a bed of rice and a bean/corn mixture that's divine. + Grilled Swordfish con salsa verde - perfectly cooked swordfish served with rice and beans and handmade tortillas. Makes the perfect fish tacos. + Gigante oatmeal chocolate chip cookie - this is probably the size of about 3 regular cookies. It's so chocolatey, I didn't notice the oatmeal. It's crispy outside and tender inside. Served with cut strawberries and pineapples and some whip cream. A perfect way to end a meal. Although the food was 5-stars, there's room for improvement. Our server didn't engage with us at all. Not even a hello or goodbye. She attended to us all evening, but a friendlier attitude or at least a smile would have made the evening nicer. There were only 4 options for wine by the glass, and the red wine we chose was just ok. It was more like a rose than a red. In addition, not a big deal, but some of the smaller sauces or fruits were served in paper cups. Yes, this place really is as good as everyone says it is. Even the guacamole and salsa are on their own level in terms of what you can find in the Bay Area. This is by far the best Mexican restaurant experience I've had outside of Mexico. The spicy carrots are life changing. They're the kind of carrots that make you realize you suck at making carrots . They are tender, rich, and extremely flavorful with a nice kick. Additionally, the black beans they are served with are also amazing! They are different than the side black beans, so don't miss out! The carrots are a must order. The swordfish was cooked perfectly and all the elements complimented it to make a very bright and comforting entree. The flavors are always on point and everything we have tried from the menu has been so good. We all had a few drinks (which I didn't get pictures of) but I had the vampiro and just like their food, you can tell that the juices are fresh with a perfect blend of tequila. I highly recommend Bombera to anyone that comes to Oakland. Don't believe all the fear mongering, the Diamond district does have some flaws but nothing to deter us coming here. A few minutes later , a server assistant/bus boy asked if we want chips and salsa. And then that was it for at least ten minutes. I had to physically go up to the host stand to ask if we could put in a drink order. She sends someone over and the guy is like " yes I'll be taking care of you all for now". For now?? Like dude just take the order, keep the dramatics. Everyone enjoyed their cocktail, I got the vampire something and it was delicious, although it was mostly ice. I ordered the swordfish and it was delightful. So flavorful. The taquitos missed the mark for me. Our real server finally comes over and introduces herself just as we are almost done with our food. My friend tells her she didn't like her food and this silly girl responds with "oh do you want a to go box?" I said did you hear her say she didn't like it??? She didn't offer to comp it either , even though the plate was mostly full. While I enjoyed my dish, the service really ruined our first Oakland dining experience. We ended up ordering the carrot dish, a bowl of pozole split in 2, and the carne asada huarache (per recommendation). I also ordered a pomegranate margarita which was refreshing, sweet, but still had the flavor of tequila shine through. The carrots came out quickly. I liked the texture of the carrots. The flavor overall was good, but I don't think I'd order it again. Pozole was delicious, served with extra avocados and radish. I thoroughly enjoyed. My favorite appetizer was the spicy carrot toasted almond which I found not really that spicy but it had such a great flavor combination of carrot, almond and beans. Never thought such simple ingredients could turned to be something so amazing. Four of us ordered several appetizers, so we only opted to two main dishes. Between the duck carnitas and the grilled swordfish, I enjoyed the fish a bit better. The duck portion was a bit small. Everyone also enjoyed their cocktails but my minchelada was really good. All in all, my first visit to this restaurant was nice, although one thing that they can improve was the service. Bombera was popping on a Monday night! Thankfully, we had made a reservation beforehand to guarantee a spot without a wait. My partner came across this place while browsing online, and we decided to give this place a try. We arrived for our 5:45PM reservation and more than half the tables both indoors and outdoors were already full. We got seated all the way back and had a pretty full view of the kitchen. Bombera is decked out in lights both indoors and outdoors. I love how open the place is, and how decorated it is. It looks fun and festive. Between my partner and I, we ordered 1) Chips, Salsa, and Guacamole, 2) Spicy Carrots Toasted Almond Misantla, 3) Pomegranate & Persimmon Gem Salad, 4) Smoked Trout Tostadas (+1 extra), 5) Small Pozole Blanco, 6) Roasted Chicken (half), and 7) Ginger Molasses Cake. Food here is great, but I think communication could have been a little better initially. Once we were seated down, we were asked if we wanted water and chips with salsa and guac. Water, for sure. But when asked about chips, I thought it was complementary. And sure, I could have asked, but it seemed like it was offered. For $8, I definitely would have skipped it. Next came the Gem Salad. The mix of ingredients here was inspiring. I liked that they added a lot of seasonal fruits, both of which are my top favorite fruits of the season as well - pomegranate and persimmon! The persimmons were perfectly ripe - a little soft, but still had a crunch to it. The jicama slices added a refreshing crunch as well. I think the most surprising, and delightful part was the spices they mixed in with the toasted pumpkin seeds. It added a whole different layer of flavor to the salad and although small, those kind of stood out as the item that brings the salad all together. For the Spicy Carrots Toasted Almond Misantla - I can see why this is a really popular starter. The almonds are absolutely delicious as well. Whatever the chefs are doing with the nuts and seeds, they're doing it right. The almonds are slightly smokey and added a crispy crunch. The carrots by itself doesn't have much flavor unless you pair it with the almonds or beans, but they were delicious, slightly soft carrots. Although delicious, I didn't particularly like how oily it is. The beans in this dish were gigantic and filling. Next up, the small Pozole Blanco. This is one of my favorites of the night. It's comforting and hearty. Although it's described as a spicy Mexican chicken soup, it's not that spicy at all. It's just warming, and the dish that hit the spot for me. I would have been happy with just a big bowl of Pozole. The chicken pieces was tender and soft. The Peruvian corn on the soup was filling as well. I never would have thought to put avocado into my soup, but it's actually not bad in Pozole. The Smoked Trout Tostadas was pretty good too. It's a bit hard to eat with your hands since the tortillas break so easily, but the trout pieces had a delicious smokey flavor to it. The tomatoes were refreshing and each one was topped with plenty of crispy shallots. Hmm, although pretty good, I'm not sure I'd order it again at that price point - 3 for $22. They're on the smaller side. Last savory dish: the half Roasted Chicken. This was my partner's top favorite. They give a lot of rice and beans, in addition to some collard greens, and veggies. The rice was fluffy basmati rice and went so nicely with some of the beans and sauce. The homemade salsa was a tad spicy, but really refreshing (think cilantro). But the star of this dish is, of course, the chicken! Somehow the skin was thin, crispy, and flavorful, while the chicken was soft, juicy and tender (it reminded us of Limon restaurant, but better). If I could have eaten more of this, I may have, but this dish by itself is shareable between 2-3 people and I just could not continue. Not after all the appetizers and other dishes we got. Finally, dessert! The Ginger Molasses Cake. This was a huge slice. The cake itself was pretty good. For my personal preference, I don't normally go for a ginger molasses dessert, but my partner wanted this so we tried it. It's not too sweet, which is great, but the ginger is kind of strong. They served it with pieces of strawberries and pineapple, which didn't pair very well with the cake. Maybe the bit of cream did, but not the fruits. The best part in my opinion was the outer edge where it's just a bit crunchy. I also tasted less of the ginger on the edge, and that sat with my taste buds better. Dinner was so filling already, I wouldn't have mind skipping this if I were to come back. All in all, a delicious meal. Service was pretty nice aside from the initial communication. Our server came to check on us multiple times and even made sure to slow down our orders since they were coming out faster than we can eat them and they wouldn't have fit on our table for two. A belated review for Bombera. While we have hundreds of Mexican restaurants in the bay area, most are mediocre. However, this is not the case with Bombera. Clearly a cut above the rest. Food is excellent. We started off with their Fundido, which included soft blue corn tortillas, the cheese was excellent. The main was their Carnitas, they don't skimp on the portion size, either. I had some for lunch the next day. The Carnitas were nicely caramelized on the outside and soft and juicy on the inside, perfect. The star of the show, however, was dessert. The cardamom cake, a deliciously super moist cake with unbelievable homemade whipped cream. That whipped cream was the best I've ever tasted. Do yourselves a favor and get down there and enjoy their great food. Btw, although we came without reservation, it's probably best to reserve if possible. The place fills up quickly. read more

Great food! Weird service. My wife and I were seated about 15 minutes after the restaurant opened. When we made our reservation we requested to Not be seated in the back of the restaurant near the bathrooms. So even though when we were seated the restaurant was mostly unoccupied they tried to seat us in the back of the restaurant near the bathrooms! I guess they do that to everyone, trying to get rid of the worst tables early and they don't read the requests that are made---makes me wonder why they accept special requests if they ignore them. When we were seated we were given one menu. We waited for someone to give us a 2nd menu but that never happened so we got up to get one. Strangest of all..we were given an order of rice and beans that we didn't order. The rice and beans sat on our table for about 10 minutes. Fortunately we didn't touch them because a waiter, without saying anything to us, took them off our table and gave them to someone on the other side of the restaurant! So much for hygiene! It was a cold evening, but they had portable heaters at each table to keep us warm and they offered blankets as well. They also had table lamps at each table that shined a lot of light. We were able to read the menu without any issues and see what we were eating! We ordered drinks and appetizers: smoked trout tostadas, chips, salsa and guacamole. We ordered enough trout tostadas for everyone to have their own. The trout came on a bed of arugula. The trout was flaky with crema de avocado and crispy shallots, which added a crispy texture to the trout. The trout filling was hard to contain while eating it on top of a crispy tostada! Any filling that came out landed on our arugula for a tasty salad! For our entrees we got beef tamales and fish tacos. Both entrees came with two items so we split it. The tamales had a lot of flavors thanks to the Arizona red chili. It was delicious and the perfect size. The two fish tacos (fried cod) were huge - we split them in half! The crema de jalapeno added some heat to the fish and cabbage slaw. Both entrees were delicious and just the right size! For dessert we ordered the Cardamon cake with pineapple, orange and whipped cream. Yum! The cake was light and fluffy and each bite with the whipped cream was delectable! Fish tacos were inedible and wasted so much fish it was a horror to behold. You couldn't even see the taco ingredients underneath the giant battered cod pieces. If I wanted fish and chips, I would have gone elsewhere. This felt like an insulting gimmick and ruined the whole experience. read more
