I remember when this was a fire station and we waited patiently to find out what it was going to be. Finally, we saw it was this place. This has been here a while and I finally got a chance to come experience this place. It is within walking distance from my house, so I met my party here, we were celebrating someone leaving for new pastures. I was able to get a early reservation (yes you do need a reservation, especially on a a weekend). The service was excellent. We ordered some adult beverage, which while they look small they packed a punch so of course we ordered another round. The menu was really good and they use seasonal ingredients. I started with Cosecha Salad (with watermelon, pomegranate, organic little gem lettuce, cucumber, jicama, toasted pumpkin seeds, and mint) I'm not a salad girl, but this just sounded so good and refreshing and it was. For the main dish I ordered the duck mole. and the mole sauce was to die for, just a hint of heat and it came with blackbeans and rice. The rest of the party ordered, the potato taquitos, roasted chicken, the fish tacos and blue corn quesadilla. They all loved it and I think we will all be back. The food is always excellent. The drinks are lovely. The servers are always polite. My concern will be about the hostess that evening. The hostess really sets the mood as she/he is the first person to greet you. We like to dine at Bombera and when guests come to visit us, we bring them to Bombera. We spare no expense and enjoy Bombera overall. So, I must share my first weird and surprising experience at Bombera on the evening October 17th. First, I made a mistake and scheduled a visit there on the wrong day. I didn't realize this error until 45 minutes to dinner time and my guests were meeting us there. Panicked, I tried to call Bombera, but it went to a recording. So, I decided I would just go to Bombera and explain my error and see what they could do. My husband and I had a backup plan incase Bombera could not accommodate us because they are so busy. When we arrived, we were greeted by the hostess. She was pleasant at first. I explained my issue, and she said they were very busy and could not accommodate us at 5:30. I expected that reply and would have left to our 2nd back up plan, but she proceeded to share that we could wait a 1 hr and 15 minutes for a table to open for a party of 4. I turned to ask my husband, and he said we could wait. My husband asked if we could wait at the bar and the hostess said no and that those seats were already reserved. She then mentioned there was a pop-up thing going on at the back of the restaurant and we could wait there. She would notify us when a table would open and reiterated that nothing would open less than 1 hr and 15 minutes. The hostess also cancelled my reservation that was on the wrong day. My husband and I proceeded to the back of the restaurant where there were drinks/snacks to purchase along with a spot to sit. We purchased drinks/snacks while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. Once my party arrived, we purchased them drinks to enjoy while we continued to wait. I checked my texts periodically even though the hostess was firm nothing would open before 1 hr and 15 minutes. Where things got weird- The hostess sent text prior to that 1 hr and 15 minutes to let me know a table opened. I was excited to see we could be seated earlier. So, I ran up to the hostess to let her know we saw the text and before she addressed me, she asked me to wait as she was busy doing other tasks. I waited patiently for several minutes. When she arrived to talk to me, she said she gave the table to another party. I said oh shoot! It seemed so quick that she would give it away so soon. I must have looked like a deer in the head lights because I was perplexed that she very much made it clear to me I would not be seated before and 1 hr and 15 minutes. So, I missed that text by a few minutes before and she gave the table to someone else. I was disappointed and didn't know what to do. It was approaching 7pm at this point. The hostess said she could seat us at another table, but we had to leave the table at 7:55pm. This would be about a 55-minute window to eat. She proceeds to push that I commit to leaving at 7:55pm because she must have that table and that if I wanted dessert it would have to be a takeout. I told her I wouldn't be ordering desert. I asked her wouldn't my departure depend on how fast the servers got our dinners out to us. Her response was very curt and rude as she said I will be closing you out at 7:55pm and you must leave at that time. It was late, we were hungry. I took her offer. This entire experience with the hostess left my evening full of stress and very unpleasant. I was looking at my watch, putting gentle pressure on my guests to get our orders in quickly. I was thinking we should have went to the other restaurant. I kept wondering if the hostess would come and ask us to get up and leave if we went passed 7:55pm. I have never had such an experience.... especially from a place we frequent and enjoy a lot. We ordered food and drinks immediately after we were seated. We ordered 4 drinks, chips and 4 dinners. The drinks came. The chips were served with the first 2 dinners that arrived at 7:35pm. Usually we get the chips with our drinks. The other two dinners followed a few minutes later. I felt like I had to inhale my dinner. I totally understand Bombera was busy, and I fully expected that we could be turned away due to my scheduling error. In hindsight, that is what the hostess should have done; turned us away so that we could have gone to our 2nd choice restaurant but instead she overcompensated resulting in pressure on herself and her guests. Had she turned us away would have spared me the anxiety. I could not fully enjoy my dinner this night. My husband told me to not worry and to just relax and eat my dinner normally. My guests wanted desert. We ordered the Tres Leches Cake. They got to enjoy it at the table. We would have ordered more drinks and desert, but the bewitching hour was upon us. I've been only a few times before, but last night I dined closer to the end of the night and it was not great. I was even more surprised to see that chef Dominica was there. Our fish tacos and chips were both clearly fried in oil that was too cold. Both were super greasy, and I found the fish taco batter not to be fully cooked. It's shocking that this place hasn't received a Michelin Star yet but we will keep our eyes peeled for that moment to come! We decided on a whim to check it on a Friday night, and boy was I glad we went right when it opened. Since we didn't have a reso, we braved our walk in and already found several parties lined up along the fence from the entrance. As soon as they opened the front door they quickly seated everyone. At a quick glance the building looked like was repurposed from an old fire department. It had plenty of outdoor covered seating, and its interior boasted enormous high ceiling with beautiful decorations well illuminated by natural light. The menu was filled with delicious wholesome meals rendering us completely paralyzed with indecision. I talked my husband out of getting chips and salsa; instead we opted for the potato taquitos which were absolutely delightful - fried crispy to perfection juxtaposed with the warm comforting potato filling. The plate also came with a healthy portion of refried black beans, slaw and crema. Then next came our mains - fish tacos and half chicken over rice. Both were well portioned. The chicken was well seasoned packed with flavo and sat atop a mound of rice, black beans, some sort of greens and corn. The side of pickled carrots and onions added so much zest to an already phenomenal dish. We also loved being able to just use our hand to break apart the handmade moist tortillas into bite size pieces, scooping up all chicken rice mixture. The fish tacos were massive! I ended up removing most of the breading since I was starting to get full; the fish was very fresh and melted my mouth. The beet colored pickled onions that came with the tacos provided some acidity but also complexity. They have absolutely nailed each dish! Although I wasn't going to get any alcoholic drinks, our friendly and enthusiastic waitress got me to sign up for a passion fruit margarita with mezcal while my husband chose a Paloma. We came here for my birthday dinner. I was especially excited to see the cute decor and try the cocktails. We were able to get a reservation the night before, which was a great birthday surprise! The waitress was very unfamiliar with the menu and ordering was a bit tricky. She didn't know the tequilas offered, which resulted in drinks needed to be sent back and remade. She brought a shot of tequila, rather than having the cocktail made with it. We don't mind a mistake, but it was a bit odd that she didn't know the ingredients of an old fashion. We started with the carrots, which were the star of the show! The chips , salsa and guacamole were pretty good! The salsa and guacamole were standard. The chips were a bit greasy and taste like Fritos corn chips. Not bad, but not the quality we expected. For entrees we got carnitas, fish tacos and a quesadilla. Everyone really enjoyed their entrees. The carnitas were cooked to perfection. The fish tacos were delicious; fried in a light batter, they were not greasy at all. The totally lost us with the desserts. Coconut tres leches cake: ironically SO DRY. The cake was crumbly. The fruit on top was not fresh what so ever and there were no notes of coconut. Nobody ate more than a bite. Chocolate pot de creme: the chocolate itself was amazing with a hint of spice, but the whipped cream was out of a can :(. A house-made whipped cream ( or leaving it off completely) would be a game changer for this dessert. The restaurant is STRICT on their two hour policy, and the hostess did in fact ask us to leave once we had reached our time limit- so beware! Overall, this place is good, but with a Michelin Star ( and MICHELIN STAR PRICES) you expect them to go above and beyond. Love, love, love. We went for my birthday and I picked this place off of a short list I have saved for some time. I could only get a 8PM seating for 3 but we decided to get there at 7ish and see if they would seat us early. They were able to! However I will say the place was pretty packed. We were seated in the covered patio area and it was plenty fine with a jacket and they did have heat. We went a little crazy and I will say for three people we ordered WAY too much but we're foodies and wanted to try it all. We started out with the pluot salad, spicy carrots and a bowl of pozole. I ordered a passion fruit margarita. For mains we ordered the duck verde mole and the filet huarache. For desert we order the pot de crème (chocolate with an almond cookie). Such a beautiful place! The vibes, the food, the people - all 10/10! First off - I'd suggest to make a reservation! We sat indoors but they do have an outdoor tented area. Second - we didn't have any issues parking on the street. The restaurant is tucked away in a semi-residential area. Third - the experience start to finish: Staff - super friendly, and welcoming! There was a seamless handoff between checking in, to the person helping with our order, to receiving our order. We came on a whim and got really lucky that they were able to seat us on the patio on busy Saturday evening. All of the food was delicious! Since I've just locked in the res for my next visit, I'm writing my thoughts in hopes that these months in between have only made this place even better. Bombera is a firewoman and this place is fireeee. The carrots appetizer will make you fall in love with carrots and calling yourself Bugs Bunny--it is that. good. I love the tostadas: smoky whitefish and fresh toppings. I'm not sure if these are on their current menu but the fish tacos were huge and perfect. I love that they let you add on a taco since we were a table of 3 and each wanted our own or if you're feeling extra hungry and want 3 for yourself! Oh and the carne asada was perfectly done but I only wish the portion was larger. They've maximized the seating in the dining room and patio (heated or shaded if you like) where you feel the liveliness but still have privacy for your own table. Second time dining at Bombera. Amazing service, food is well thought out and the flavor and presentation 5 star plus. Cocktails are exciting, well put together and balanced. Fresh ingredients, Mexican flair, friendly and fun. Parking can be a challenge but worth it. We sat at the end of the bar closer to the entrance which is Where sat the first time we ate there. I enjoyed watching Guadalupe the bartender create cocktails and share recipes with me. Alejandro provided excellent service while We were waiting for our table. Upscale Mexican-by-way-of-California restaurant with rich and inventive flavors. There are three legs that hold up the stool here; the masa, the mole, and the celebration of each dish's main ingredient. We ordered the duck carnitas, summer tamales, and kids' quesadilla, along with the roasted beats and a strawberry agua fresca and horchata. I cannot enumerate all of the amazing elements and flavors in this meal, but I can say that the crispy outside of the duck and the ease with which it fell apart drew a connection between duck confit and carnitas that changed the way I will think about both. The hearty masa in the tamales had a the texture of hand ground corn and was substantial enough to warrant chewing though. The beet -- tender and flavorful in itself -- was paired with a nutty, spicy mole like a thick paste, bright with its herbs. The agua fresca was a summertime blast of fruit. Yes, yes. All of the food is delicious and amazing. But what takes the restaurant over the top is that the food is comforting and familiar in equal measure to its inventiveness and flawless execution. Had a wonderful experience at Bombera and it's been on my list to visit. Scored a reservation for early dining and line was already forming at 5:00pm. Dined inside which was a beautifully decorated fire station, hence the restaurant name of Bombera. Started with the chips, guac and salsa, beets, all amazing. We also had pozole which was good and for our entree the filet mignon and whole chicken! It was a $9 difference from a half chicken to a full -- so guess what more chicken to take home! Our server was very nice. When I had mistakenly thought I was ordering a cocktail vs a shot, he quickly suggested we can make it to a cocktail, and it was really good. Oh and the closer was an amazing cardamom cake that you'd see displayed on the side of their open kitchen --- so so good! We decided to have dinner here after seeing Bombera on "Check Please". Although tonight was my first time, my mom had been here before. She made a reservation online and we were seated right away. We started with an order of chips and guac. The chips tasted homemade. The paper bowl the salsa and guac were in was a bit awkward for dipping. For our drinks, I had the Tepache con Tiki cocktail and my mom had a refresher that was bright pink (hibiscus?). My cocktail wasn't overly heavy on the alcohol with the right amount of sweetness. I got the blue corn tamales and my mom got the carrots and smoked trout tostadas. The tamales came with a side of chard and corn in a rojo (red) sauce. The tamales were tasty and the red sauce had a kick. The carrots had black beans and smoked almonds. While the carrots themselves were good, the sauce was a bit too spicy for us. The smoked trout tostadas were surprisingly good! I wasn't sure if I'd liked smoked trout but the texture was very light and flaky, similar to crab. The crispy shallots were a nice touch. Since we were stuffed, we got a slice of the cardamom cake for later. I had the cake for dessert ~1-1.5 hours after our meal and liked that it wasn't overly sweet. It paired nicely with the fruit (strawberry, pineapple, nectarine) and the whipped cream was the best! Our waitress, Lucia, was friendly, knowledgeable, and patient with our questions. Fantastic Food, but Service Left Room for Improvement The food here was absolutely delicious--everything we ordered was flavorful, beautifully presented, and clearly made with care. The drinks were also excellent and complemented the meal perfectly. I visited last night to celebrate my mother's birthday, and we were both excited for a special evening together. While the food truly impressed us, the service unfortunately didn't quite meet the same standard. Our entrées arrived almost immediately after the appetizer, which made the meal feel a bit rushed. We had ordered quite a bit for two people, but our server never checked in with us during the meal. I had to flag her down for a to-go box and later again for a drink menu when we wanted to order more. It was also a little disappointing that we were never offered a dessert menu--especially since it was a birthday celebration. Throughout the evening, our server passed by our table a few times but didn't engage, so we felt a bit overlooked. We received a gift card to Bombera as a wedding present, and decided to use it to celebrate our anniversary -- and we're so glad we did! While the outdoor seating looked really inviting with lots of covered tables and heaters, we had a reservation and were seated indoors. The interior decor was bright, fun, and full of character -- it definitely added to the celebratory vibe of the evening. Service was excellent from start to finish. We kicked things off with cocktails: I had the Vampiro (tequila-based and perfectly balanced), and my wife had the Paloma, which was just as expertly made. You could tell the bartenders know what they're doing. For dinner, we shared the Blue Corn Quesadilla with roasted yams and the Pork Carnitas. The quesadilla was grilled to perfection with gooey, delicious cheese. The carnitas were incredibly tender and flavorful, and the fresh tortillas were divine -- soft, warm, and clearly made with care. Chocolate chip & oatmeal cookie was tasty, but they charge $9 for a single cookie!! Our tab after tax and tip was $320+ for 5 margaritas, 1 mocktail, watermelon salad, roasted carrots, duck leg, filet mignon, whole roast chicken, 1 cookie and 1 coffee. Happy to have finally tried this restaurant! I would recommend snagging a reservation to secure a seat. For Valentine's Day they dimmed the lights down low to create an intramural vibe. The food was delicious! We tried the fish tacos (most massive fish tacos I've seen, worth the price!), the crispy potato taquitos were my favorite (the sauce that comes with it was DELICIOUS), and the crab tostados were a good appetizer choice. The price point is fair for the portions you get. We came in on a Saturday night and I'd recommend securing a reservation before arriving. They were extremely busy at opening and two long lines formed at the door. Once we sat down we were given chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and on the thicker side. We opted for the tostadas and the watermelon salad for the apps, the portions were huge. The tostada was on the fishier side but it was packed with flavor. The watermelon salad was good but I personality didn't think it was as special. For the main course we got the beef hurrache with the filet mignon. This was the star of the show, the steak was perfectly tender and seasoned. The queso on top was a great pairing as well. We went to Bombera to celebrate my uncle's birthday, and the experience fell short of what I expected. The employees seemed rushed and didn't appear happy to be there. I was also surprised to be charged for a small piece of birthday cake, since many restaurants offer that as a courtesy. These carrots come surrounded by black beans in a chili sauce, topped with toasted almonds. I've never tasted anything like it. It's one of those dishes you think about later. Perfect for everything: Girls' night (like we did this past Friday), birthdays, graduations, date nights, I've even come solo. The food and service are that good. And I have to give a huge shout-out to Estilo, one of my favorite servers! He always welcomes every guest like they're his favorite person in the room. He talked us into getting the beets, and they were ON POINT. He checked on us throughout the night, joked with us, and honestly enjoyed our table just as much as we enjoyed having him. Anything less than 5 stars would be a crime! After 3 dinning experiences at Bombera it has become my Oakland favorite (at the moment). Every single dish I have tried is unique mouth watering deliciousness. The food is so flavorful and perfectly fresh. I have had NO missed on the appetizers, entrees, or drinks. My only miss was the tres leches cake which was dry and dense and not one milk in sight lol. Staff has always been kind and attentive while encouraging sharing which I highly encourage as well! Get all the things! The duck mole is soft and crispy with a unique green mole a must try. Decor is cute and outdoor patio is perfect on a sunny day. Make a reservation! read more
