Bodhi Viet Vegan is a hidden gem...literally not figuratively. When I drove down W. Parmer Lane initially, I passed by it. I ended up having to call to get the precise directions. Fortunately, when the food truck owner told me it was near the Psychic Reading building, I knew precisely where to go. This food truck is in the back of a building, where you walk down a path to get to it. There is a sign that points to the food truck area, but not tall enough to catch your attention. Alas, I was there. One of the things I learned pretty quickly was the difference between a vegan diet and Daniel's fast. To be transparent, the Daniel fast is more restrictive. For example, you can only eat unleavened bread on the Daniel fast, whereas you can eat leavened bread as a vegan (bread that have yeast or other agents to make the bread rise). In addition, vegans can eat processed foods and use sweeteners, whereas with the Daniel fast, you only eat items that come from the earth. After deciding on what met my criteria for Daniel Fast, I decided on the mung bean noodles with vegetables. The food truck owner was super kind to make suggestions. The noodles were translucent with a bit of spice. I really enjoyed the noodles. Only one other couple was present, who appeared to be a regular. Overall, laid back environment. We are almost at the end of week one of the Daniel fast. It has been a time of reflection and cleanse. read more

Rating: 3.8/5 Bodhi is a vegan food truck run by local Buddhist nuns/volunteers. I love the mission they believe in--that wholesome vegan food is the key to a peaceful and healthy lifestyle. I recommend ordering to go, as your food will be aggressively attacked by flies if you try to eat there. Also, this is a CASH ONLY place, even if you order online. Their menu is hugeee, so it took us a while to decide what to get, but the prices are unbeatable for what you get. They also prepare the food pretty quickly and package everything nicely. Deep Ocean ($9): Crispy soy protein, chili, garlic, seaweed toast, and special chef sauce served on a bed of white rice. The best thing we tried here. The soy protein had a nice crunch, great flavor, and an addictive quality. In my opinion, you don't really need the rice--they can be eaten like French fries. Banh Mi Seitan BBQ ($6): It was really good the first time, but just okay the second. There was less "meat," and it lacked flavor. The bread was also soft, so I don't think they toasted it. Banh Mi Char-siu ($5): Not even close to char-siu texture or flavor, but it wasn't bad. Same issue with the bread and overall lack of flavor. Sticky Rice ($7): Soy protein, steamed sticky rice, crispy shallots, green onion, topped with house sauce. This item requires you to call in or order online ahead of time, as it takes a while to make. When we got it, it looked like they forgot the green onions. This vegan version lacked umami and isn't something we'd recommend. Signature Broken Rice ($9): Broken rice with shredded meatless protein (Cơm Tấm Bì), fried shredded potatoes, grilled BBQ seitan, char-siu, and homemade sauce. I've only had the tofu banh mi here but goodness gracious it's so damn delicious. Got it to eat by the pool one day and I loved it so much I immediately went back for another banh mi the next time they were open. The tofu was nice and soft and lightly fried and all the toppings were topped deliciously with chili oil. Ugh gonna miss this so much when I leave Austin. If you are not used to vegan food tho, it may be a bit strange at first, however, the food itself is very delicious if you don't have certain expectation it to taste like meat. It was so flavorful. I also enjoyed the stuffed bitter melon but keep in mind it can be quite bitter. I also liked the various dumplings. Our bigger order took about 40 min to be ready. Some people who just got a sandwich got their food faster. I pre ordered online on their website and chose the cash option in person and was able to pay them by Zelle. How did I not ever hear about this place? The Buddhist nuns who run the truck are so sweet and fun to chat with. The mission of this little food truck to spread the peaceful teachings of the Buddhist religion (not in a oreachy way, but more through their overall demeanor) while also providing DELICIOUS vegan Vietnamese food is a welcome addition to Austin's growing Asian food scene. Note this is a vegan food truck and no animal byproducts are used. The flavor of the food is INCREDIBLE-- some of the best Asian food and by far the best vegan Asian food I've ever had. This review is very near and dear to my heart for many reasons. Firstly, this food truck is ran by the nuns at Huê Lâm temple! My family goes to this temple and these were the same nuns who led the funeral procession at my aunt's funeral. The head nun built the food truck from the ground up with her savings and the temple survives off of donations and the nuns and volunteers' hard work. So, all of the proceeds of this food truck also goes straight to supporting the temple. :) Definitely check this food truck out even if you are not vegan/vegetarian. The price is super reasonable and the food is delicious. My Vietnamese mother and relatives love this spot since this is the same food that is cooked for temple-goers. Now, they can have it whenever they want. There is plenty of parking space in the lot. Once parked, just follow the signs to the truck in the back. It is not loud at all so it's a great spot for a peaceful and quiet lunch. There is not a lot of seatings so I recommend ordering take-away. Also, they take both card and cash! This place was rated at number 23 on the Yelp 100 best food trucks in the US. I was impressed with the variety of offerings, but what I got was only OK. It was supposed to be a fishy tasting dish with rice, five cold carrot bits, and some cold cabbage with a tiny slice of green onion. The fishy taste came from the Nori that was wrapped around some rolled strips. (Seitan?) Since it was cooked to char, most of the Nori did not have much flavor to impart. It was very salty. I had the salted lemonade. I asked the woman preparing our food how salty it was. She said it was just a name, not salty. NO WAY! That lemonade tasted like sea water with lemon and sugar. I was one sip, and out! My gf got the caramelized tofu. I tasted it. Very good. The purple drink with pearls was way too sweet. I'll come back and try this place again, no doubt. Came here for an early lunch on a Saturday and ordered ahead for pickup. While there wasn't much of a line I recommend doing the same since everything is made to order and there's a small staff on hand. There also isn't really a place to sit so I wouldn't recommend planning on eating here. This spot had been on my radar for a while as a very different looking Vietnamese experience compared to what I've had elsewhere and I couldn't have been happier with it! The menu has all sorts of dishes that were new to me and the only struggle was narrowing that down. The overall quality of the faux meats stood out across all the dishes. They were super flavorful and didn't have any odd consistencies that I've often encountered with other fake meats. I particularly enjoyed the vegan ball baguette. Usually baguettes used for banh mis are a little too hard for my taste, but theirs was a bit softer and great as an overall sandwich. They have a lot of sweet desserts that I'll definitely be back to explore, but we decided to try the taro bao this time and thought it was also delicious. The bun was super soft and they absolutely nailed the taro flavor. As is often the case with non American cuisines further from the city center, they are a fantastic bang for your buck. My partner and I shared 2 entrees, an appetizer and dessert for $18. It wasn't as massive of an meal as you'd get by that description in a sit down restaurant, but we were plenty full afterwards. Overall I'd say this is one of the best Asian food experiences I've had in Austin. First of all, the prices blew me away. So cheap wowza. One plate was less than $8. I have never seen that in austin in a long time. Got the char siu Banh Mi. The meat did not remind me remotely of real char siu. The bread was not the greatest bread in my opinion, it was so soft not my preferred banh mi bread. The veggie steam buns were the best thing we got. So flavorful and packed full of veggies. The shaking beef was interesting. The beef was not beefy at all but the dish overall went together well. Everything here is so healthy, my gut left feeling clean. There are two tables outside the truck for community style eating which is a fun twist. I am saying this as a picky eater from Houston, This place is legit ! Bun Bo Hue is my favorite so far, their broth is amazing and as close as it gets to the original. The curry has more of a pineapple taste but it still a great choice. The banana steam dessert is to die for. It's amaze me how many food items these small food truck can pull of to be honest. The truck is run by a few monks , they are super nice and friendly. You can even call ahead to order, just know there will be at least 5-10 mins wait especially on a friday. This has become one of my favorite spot to visit weekly now and I am sure there will be a lot more to enjoy on the massive menu they have to offer ! Our go to place for light and flavorful vegan Asian food ! Spicy lemongrass seitan is to die for! Rightly spiced and so flavorful and they serve it with rice and veggies . The pineapple curry is another favorite ! The salty lemonade is very light and refreshing and we always make sure to get it with the food . What an amazing concept and love that they're bringing this to Austin. It reminded me of when we used to travel extensively two decades ago and mention that we're vegetarians - the simplicity of the food we'd be given, without the complex flavor profiles today's vegan food offers. My review is also a PSA - I'm gluten intolerant and while most of their dishes mark the GF sticker on the menu, not all of those dishes are actually gluten-free. I was told that S1 is gluten-free for sure (same for the dumplings) but when I opened the box, I had a strong feeling it's wheat noodles. After speaking to 3 different people, they acknowledged the error. Possibly, because the place is mostly volunteer-run, there's a gap in communication. I have been dying to eat here for over a year but location and hours have made it hard. I finally ate here today... I AM IN LOVE. The amount of options? The price? The adorable Buddhist woman working the truck? It was all perfection. I love that it's hard to find. A bare bones trailer with a meager sign, and behind some old small building. I love the service. The woman was all smiles as she giggled and told me that as a first time customer, I should just go down the menu, item by item to try out. And I loved the food. The adorable woman working the truck pointed to the new menu item sign she was taping to the side of the truck and said in broken English, something about it being an authentic recipe she brought to the establishment. The food was insanely favorable! The item she pointed to was the rice patties. I didn't think twice before adding it to my order. The broken rice and meat was perfect as well as the spring rolls! Which brings me to... the price. And of course I loved the price! The three items I ordered totaled to a whopping $13! You can't beat that for the variety, flavor and adorable service. Yay! I love that this place is super weird. It literally is just like a random trailer in a parking lot and everything is served by buddhist nuns (female version of a monk) and they really do have their heads shaved. (I knew male monks shave their heads but I didnt know the female ones did too). ANYWAYS - I do get super excited when I hear about vegetarian/vegan spots because that means I have more options than just one salad to choose from. And they did not disappoint with the variety. They have 'fake' meat in a lot of their dishes so if you are not a fan you can let them know and they will probably leave it out. The 'meat' tasted good - and the dish overall had good flavor. I got the vegan yellow noodle stir fry. My husband who eats meat said that this was one of his favorite veggie places so far. I was mixed on giving this place a 4 or 5 because one thing that was strange was that the food was a little cold. Maybe it was supposed to be that way? I visited Bodhi for the first time today after years of meaning to try it. I was a bit disappointed, but feel like maybe I went on an "off" day. I love the concept and variety of the menu - affordable healthy food that'll fill you up, and lots of vegan/gf items to choose from. The customer service was really sweet. However, the execution of the food didn't live up to what I expected it to be. I ordered the orange tofu rice plate, and the sauce was so bland I could barely taste the orange. It came with some cabbage, green bell pepper, and onions for $8. Although it was cheap, I feel that I definitely got what I paid for in terms of the amount and quality/variety of the ingredients. My mom got a vermicelli plate, which she thought came with tofu, but when we got home (we got it to go), there wasn't any on it. Perhaps that was our fault for not understanding the menu, I'm not sure. It was noodles, and some shredded cabbage and carrot with a fried roll on top for $8. Again, although it was cheap, I feel like we got what we paid for in terms of amount and quality/variety of the ingredients. If you're looking for cheap and healthy vegan and gluten-free food, that is prepared quickly and with kind customer service, this fits the bill. It's been several years since I've been here. I want to go back now that I made the leap from vegetarian to vegan. Seeing the reviews and pictures, I see a lot of styrofoam containers which just makes me sad. We can't recycle styrofoam in our curbside garbages.
