Idly - Two soft, round idlis are positioned on a stainless steel plate, with three small compartments containing different chutneys and sambar. The chutneys include a white coconut chutney, a creamy white or beige chutney, and a darker, spicy sambar. The image captures a typical South Indian breakfast presentation, emphasizing the variety of flavors served with idlis.

During our weekend trip to Austin, we visited this decently sized and clean Indian restaurant that added a lively touch by showing a cricket match, much to the guests' delight. The service was really good. We ordered a variety of items, including idlis, uttappa, and different types of dosas. One dosa was notably huge, easily serving two or more people as the menu suggested. Unfortunately, the dosas fillings lacked flavor. However, the uttappas were really good and highly recommended. While the experience was pleasant, I wouldn't go back, preferring to explore other places for idli and dosas.

If you're missing the small neighborhood cafes from back home, in India and that also have a very personalized taste and service - then look no further! This is it! Desilicious cafe is a fresh addition that was much needed to expand Austin's Indian food offerings. The place is really nice, to sit down and experience nostalgia through the food. If you like Puran poli, definitely give it a try!! Highly recommended!

The menu - The image shows a laminated menu on a dark wooden table, with a person's hands at the top holding the menu open. The menu includes sections for snacks, dosas, DC specials, and other dishes, with prices listed next to each item. The menu design uses a blue background with yellow and orange text and accents, and features images of some dishes. The person appears to be seated, with their legs visible at the bottom of the image.

Came here with my Dad who was visiting for the weekend. I normally don't go to desi restaurants that serve thalis (large platters with samplings of food and rice) since I'm usually not that hungry to eat everything on my own, so I enjoy having a thali once in a while when I have someone to share it with! The South Indian thali is full of delicious samplings, and it comes with a ton of rice! We also ordered onion samosas, and they came out as six flaky samosas (the crust was much lighter than what I am used to with regular Indian samosa, which has a thick and darker crust) with a refreshing green chutney. Everything all together was less than $20 before tip. The staff was friendly too, and entertainment came in the form of Bollywood music videos playing from a TV screen, haha!

Schezwan cheese dosa

Everything was very tasty and authentic. Onion rava dosa took a while (as it usually does take time to crisp) but it was huge and crispy with fried onions and peppercorn and totally worth the wait. All the chutneys and sambhar were delicious. Schezwan cheese dosa was so different and spicy. They have so many dosa varieties, I wanna go back to try a few more. The South Indian thali is also a good option if you're looking for a full meal, with variety of curries, chappatti, dal, papad and rice. The food is very filling, both for the tummy and the heart :) It's a new restaurant so giving them the benefit of the doubt as the indoor seating and decor is still a work in progress.

Bullet Coffee - A metal cup containing bullet coffee with a frothy surface topped with cocoa powder or similar seasoning. The cup is placed on a matching metal saucer, and the background shows various dishes and bread on a tray, indicating a restaurant setting. The image emphasizes the coffee's creamy texture and presentation.

Let's me start with saying this - I'm so THANKFUL to have found this cafe. Convenient location off of Parmer Ln and They should not be surprised to see me as regular because the following: Food- literally so desi-ly delicious. Everything I ordered during the two visits was perfectly cooked and so was the crispness. On my first visit, I had ordered Punugulu, Masala dosa, Chettinad dosa, Tomato Onion uttapam, and bullet coffee. My second order was Masala dosa, Cheese Schezuan dosa, Ghee Roast dosa and bullet and filter coffee. Ghee roast dosa, uttapam, punugulu are a must try. Crispness of ghee roast dosa was on point and the flavorsome uttapam took me back to eating authentic uttapams in India. Punugulu is basically medu vada but in different shape, and the taste, crispness was perfect. The chutneys and sambhar are just as mouth watering. Ambiance- it is very casual and low key. Usual set up table chairs. There's a small utensil station you have to pick cutlery from on your own. Something that I would never mind in general and especially when the food is this good. Service- friendly helpful staff. Might take a minute or two for you to get seated since they don't have a host waiting at the entrance always to welcome guests. Parking- own private and free parking right in front and around restaurant.

Ghee roast with curries. - A crispy, rolled dosa is placed on a stainless steel tray with three small bowls of chutneys and a bowl of sambar. In front, there is a round stainless steel plate containing fried snacks with a fork, accompanied by three different chutneys. The setting is on a polished wooden table, with part of a person's arm and a yellow chair visible in the background.

Great restaurant . Great owners. And they got a great cook! Only vegetarian! Great variety of mouthwatering items. You will leave highly satisfied.

Thali

DW and I visited for lunch; ordered a south Indian thali and a madurai malli dosa. The dosa was quite good, said my wife; she did wish they had served her more sambar however. Chutneys were tasty. The thali was served with one chappati, sweets, and enough rice to feed a hungry football player. Not being one, I decided to quit after consuming about half the rice. The curries were good and tasty, particularly the mango pachadi, the rasam, and the small side of fried rice. Nothing was overly spicy or oily. I asked for an add-on chappati, which was billed extra (fair). Two cups of south Indian filter coffee to wash everything down, and we were good. Down to earth ambience, adequate parking, and friendly service.

Came here with family for lunch and it was so delicious!!!! I got the masala dosa and the idli sambar and they were sooo good!!! The dosa was so nice and crispy and the idli was so buttery soft!! The tomato achaar was to die for!!! The service was also super fast and we didn't wait for long to get our food. Definitely coming back here!!

Onion Chili uttapam

We were excited to find a South Indian spot in North Austin, but this place really missed the mark: All dishes were freshly prepared, but had bland flavors and small portions relative to their price. Service was friendly and disorganized; we saw several parties receive the wrong dishes while we were there. Tables were dirty and greasy. The vada we ordered were a bit bland. The $7 order had two small pieces, and the chutneys were not great pairings. The chili onion uttapam was good but a bit simple. The batter was bland and so we really only tasted the toppings. The mysore masala dosa was the best item we had---great preparation and good filling. The plantain baji was three small pieces, and had some stringy peel in it. I can't recommend this dish.

The food is really good! One less star for not so hot food- especially Sambhar. I loved Karivepaku Podi Idly and Schezwan noodles! We had Ananthapur Kaara Dosa which was very tasty; plus we asked for spicy level- and they made it so as per my expectation. The Chettinaad Dosa is the most famous here and it was worth the fame! The potato stuffing inside had many delicious flavours. Onion Chilli Uttapam was hot, fresh, and tasty! Lastly, I liked their sambhar (was not hot though) & all chutneys except tomato chutney (I've had better). Very friendly staff! Ambience was okay, nothing too fancy, lots of space.

Masala Thatte Idly, Mini Tiffins Weekend Combo
Nihilaa K.

Indian tiffin place newly opened 5 mins from domain is deeply satisfying tiffin cravings for South Indians :) came here for a quick meal of idly and dosa and we were not disappointed . The combos are great for people who want to try more items in small quantities . They have a separate table for people who want different kind of podis. Their chutneys were really good and sambar was decent . Would recommend the vada, pongal and dosa . Thattu idly was decent . Service great as they are newly opened (hoping they maintain the quality and service after they get more crowd). Definitely coming back for some good tiffin!

Sambar Vada

** vegetarian food review ** I have been to this place at least 4 times now and tried 4-5 different things...I have my favorites which I order each time, but we also try a new type of dosa or idly always. Ghee Roast Dosa - this is my personal favorite!!! If you want to have something light, with no masala at all, and if you like the flavor of ghee on dosa then this is a MUST TRY!!! It's perfectly crispy and delicious! Love it! Idli sambhar and vada sambhar - again, too good, idli is very soft and tastes best with the sambhar. Madurai Mali dosa/idli - the dosa has geeen colored masala and has mint kinda flavor which is quite good, I personally am not a fan but it was a good one to try. Uttappa - amazingggg!!!!! Must try!!!! Their chutneys are all great as well, and sambhar is also lovely. The coconut chutney can be a bit spicy, but it is too good!! Service is great, they are very nice and helpful. There are not as many people here, so it is always a nice place to sit and chat and have a meal.

Vegetable Kothu Parotta - A serving of Vegetable Kothu Parotta, a South Indian dish, is displayed on a metal platter. The dish contains chopped vegetables and shredded flatbread, garnished with fresh cilantro leaves. A spoon is placed on the side of the platter, and the dish appears to be seasoned with spices.

They can veganize most of the menu if you ask, so major points for that! The szewhan dosa was pretty good, though I had been expecting a different style. The podi idly was nicely flavored and had a kick of spice. The paratha special we tried was a dish I'd never seen before and was the best of the three. The space is a little dingy but could easily be made a little nicer ambiance-wise. The service was a little odd but I think they are still pretty new. We will be back.

Bodhi Viet Vegan is a hidden gem...literally not figuratively. When I drove down W. Parmer Lane…read moreinitially, I passed by it. I ended up having to call to get the precise directions. Fortunately, when the food truck owner told me it was near the Psychic Reading building, I knew precisely where to go. This food truck is in the back of a building, where you walk down a path to get to it. There is a sign that points to the food truck area, but not tall enough to catch your attention. Alas, I was there. One of the things I learned pretty quickly was the difference between a vegan diet and Daniel's fast. To be transparent, the Daniel fast is more restrictive. For example, you can only eat unleavened bread on the Daniel fast, whereas you can eat leavened bread as a vegan (bread that have yeast or other agents to make the bread rise). In addition, vegans can eat processed foods and use sweeteners, whereas with the Daniel fast, you only eat items that come from the earth. After deciding on what met my criteria for Daniel Fast, I decided on the mung bean noodles with vegetables. The food truck owner was super kind to make suggestions. The noodles were translucent with a bit of spice. I really enjoyed the noodles. Only one other couple was present, who appeared to be a regular. Overall, laid back environment. We are almost at the end of week one of the Daniel fast. It has been a time of reflection and cleanse.

Rating: 3.8/5 Bodhi…read moreis a vegan food truck run by local Buddhist nuns/volunteers. I love the mission they believe in--that wholesome vegan food is the key to a peaceful and healthy lifestyle. I recommend ordering to go, as your food will be aggressively attacked by flies if you try to eat there. Also, this is a CASH ONLY place, even if you order online. Their menu is hugeee, so it took us a while to decide what to get, but the prices are unbeatable for what you get. They also prepare the food pretty quickly and package everything nicely. Deep Ocean ($9): Crispy soy protein, chili, garlic, seaweed toast, and special chef sauce served on a bed of white rice. The best thing we tried here. The soy protein had a nice crunch, great flavor, and an addictive quality. In my opinion, you don't really need the rice--they can be eaten like French fries. Banh Mi Seitan BBQ ($6): It was really good the first time, but just okay the second. There was less "meat," and it lacked flavor. The bread was also soft, so I don't think they toasted it. Banh Mi Char-siu ($5): Not even close to char-siu texture or flavor, but it wasn't bad. Same issue with the bread and overall lack of flavor. Sticky Rice ($7): Soy protein, steamed sticky rice, crispy shallots, green onion, topped with house sauce. This item requires you to call in or order online ahead of time, as it takes a while to make. When we got it, it looked like they forgot the green onions. This vegan version lacked umami and isn't something we'd recommend. Signature Broken Rice ($9): Broken rice with shredded meatless protein (Cơm Tấm Bì), fried shredded potatoes, grilled BBQ seitan, char-siu, and homemade sauce. A great dish to start with since you get to try different proteins, and they give a generous portion. It was good but paled in comparison to the Deep Ocean.

When you place your order, the people you give your order to know the answers to what's in the food. That is so helpful. I got a chicken breast with vegetables cooked in olive oil and fresh fruit and hummus with fresh vegetables. It was so good. The prices are a little high, the chicken breast with vegetables and fruit was $15.95 and the serving size was small. I'm a small person so it was perfect for me but definitely not enough for a man. My husband got shrimp and two servings of fruit. Again tasty but small portions and it was $16.95. I feel that the hummus was adequate in size and it was really good. But they charge you $3.25 extra if you get it with vegetables instead of hummus, so the hummus plate was $10. The lunch for two people was just under $60 so that's a little bit expensive for lunch. The restaurant was beautiful and clean and the mood was so upbeat and positive. I highly recommend this restaurant and I can't wait to be back!

The meat itself was okay, decently cooked, and topped with quite a lot of some spice that I can't quite put my finger on. It was okay. The rice though, that is what really disappointed me. Persian rice is usually amazing, but this really didn't seem traditional and it had a strange taste to it. It also came with onion and a grilled tomato, both solid additions. Good portion though. The doogh yogurt drink wasn't homemade like I had hoped, but in all honesty, it still really hit the spot on a hot Austin day. Reasonable price. The saffron rice was also fairly disappointing. Large white chunks (clotted cream maybe? But they were pretty tasteless), gritty texture, not much flavor. Just not really worth it. All in all, a bit of a disappointing dinner in Austin. I'll have to look for a different Persian spot next time I'm in the area.
