BODEGA HARBOR INN is a clean and carefully maintained motel that takes the form of two rows of motel suites, with a gravel parking lot in the center, and a motel office at the far end of the parking lot. The gravel lot is about 80 feet x 80 feet. The grounds of BODEGA HARBOR INN continue beyond the motel office and in back is a row of colorful painted wooden deck chairs, a grassy lawn and, beyond that, the legendary Route One and, beyond that, a view of Bodega Bay. The deck chairs are painted, in orange, turquoise, yellow, red, green, and they all face Bodega Bay. Near the row of lawn chairs is a little garden with statue of a mermaid and a statue of a large starfish. I spent more time looking at the mermaid than at the starfish. The lawn is about 50 feet x 50 feet square. From the grassy slope in back of the motel office, you can hear distant seals going, "Ulp, ulp, ulp, ulp, ulp, ulp, ulp!" There are 16 suites in all, and all of the outside walls of the Inn are painted grayish-blue (by the way, the paint is new). At the east side of the gravel parking lot is another wooden building, with walls that are each sloped inwards. This is a tall building and it once was used as a water tower. That is why the building has the letters, "W.T." painted on the outside. Provisions can be had at a large grocery called, "Pelican Plaza." "Pelican Plaza" is located a one minute walk away from Bodega Harbor Inn. For supper on our first night, I bought potato salad that included hard boiled eggs and red-colored relish. Also, I bought a box of freshly made dolmehs. In the morning, I made coffee with the coffee machine in our suite at Bodega Harbor Inn, and then after we checked out, I bought another morning coffee at nearby "Pelican Plaza."
INSIDE YOUR SUITE. Each suite is like a little cottage (or like a tiny building). The architecture of the motel takes the form of a series of tiny cottages, all connected together, with each cottage situated a half-foot below the succeeding cottage. The overall conformation of each of the two rows of cottages is like stairsteps. The large bed in our suite had an attractive bedcover with pretty pictures of starfish, kelp, snails, seahorses, clam shell, all in a blue color on a white background. Our suite had a VIZIO flatscreen television. The suite had two lamps, each made of four sea urchins (with the spines removed) stacked on top of each other, with a lamp shade on top. They were not made from real sea urchins, they were only made of porcelain. The suite also had a large canvas, about 36 inches by 36 inches, with an abstract painting of the ocean with surf in front. Also, the suite had two small paintings, each with sailboats in the ocean. The room and the "water closet" are very clean. In a conversation that I had with the manager, I realized that he puts a top priority on cleanliness. Bodega Harbor Inn is located in a quiet part of town, and our night's journey into dreamland was uninterrupted and restful.
THE FRONT OFFICE. The manager in the front office was very friendly, and he told me the history of BODEGA HARBOR INN. He told me that the motel was built in the 1920s, and that there used to be a real water tank in the tower with "W.T." painted on the outside. But in a storm in February 2019, winds of 80 miles per hour blew the roof off. Then, the roof got replaced, and the furnishings inside were removed. The manager showed me a photograph of the same motel from back in the 1920s. Writing under the photo said, "The Bodega Harbor Inn has existed here . . . since the early 1900s . . . in the early 1940s the property was requisitioned by the U.S. Army to house a World War II Coastal Artillery unit, which had gun emplacements where the Dieckmann's store is now located. In 1962, it housed the production crew for the motion picture The Birds. We hope that you enjoy your stay at our Inn."
HOW TO FIND THE INN. Bodega Harbor Inn is situated on the edge of the legendary Route One, but this applies only for the grassy slope in back of the motel property. To arrive at the parking lot, you need to find Bodega Avenue. If your automobile is facing north on your trip to Bodega Harbor Inn, and if you discover that you've just passed the large area known as, "THE TIDES WHARF AND RESTAURANT," you will need to drive north for only one more minute. In driving north, you will encounter a ninety degree turn in Route One and in a few seconds, you will see a grocery called, "Pelican Plaza" and a store called, "Candy & Kites" and a restaurant called, "Boat House." "Pelican Plaza" is located at the intersection of Route One and Bodega Avenue. If you forget to look for "Pelican Plaza" or one of the other businesses, and if you discover that you are passing BODEGA DUNES CAMPGROUND, this means that you have driven too far and need to turn around. read more
