Great place to stay on the Russian River. Not far from the 101, and even closer to the Pacific Coast Highway and Jenner. Cute Inn, each unit has a fair bit of privacy, and most have their own decks. There is also a grassy lawn that leads right to the river, with hammocks and picnic tables. Some seats to lounge in. Very dog friendly - we had a medium size dog and that was no problem. There were some kayaks there but we did not get to try those out. The room itself was basic but clean and comfortable. The staff were really nice. Definitely would love to stay again, no complaints at all! read more

The place is very old (50's decor in disrepair) and run down and the manager uses vinegar to clean the bed clothes. The manager treated us very poorly, saying all sorts of bizzarre things to my 8 year old daughter and I. He refused a refund although we had not used the room at all and had booked last minute, five hours earlier that same day at noon. First he said he couldn't refund without his employer's permission. I requested he ask the owner and he behaved very angrily and asked if "You want to be my boss? Will you pay me? Buy my food, my bread, my roti?" It was absolutly bizarre and such an obvious show. Finally I went and knocked on the owner's door, a nice lady who lives on top of some of the units and she offered a refund immediately. The manager is not doing his job maintaining the property and, when I mentioned there were none of the normal postings about fire safety, hotel licensing, etc., he accused me of using my "big city power to beat up on small business" advising I should go beat up on a corporate hotel. After he finally refunded my one night stay and we were driving away, he actually yelled "Get the F%&k out!", taking a picture of my car while we drove away. I am in Guerneville a dozen times a year and I have never experienced anything so sketchy. read more

First off, the two queen beds that we paid top dollar for ended up being one queen bed downstairs and another air mattress on the floor three flights up. The place was very old (I can handle that) but it was dirty with cob webs and rotting wood throughout the room. Ant invasion in the kitchen when no food in sight! Needless to say we paid for the kitchenette and never used it. The outdoor sitting chairs they provide were covered in bird waste and looked like they had never cleaned them. The room was right next to the road so very loud (I can handle that if all else was good). We called the front office the day we got there and shocker they never called us back. This place is non-refundable and the pictures do NOT match reality. So them not ever calling us back is a big lessons learned. This is the only review I have ever wrote but to me it's worth my time since this little experience wa s very costly without any reward. read more

My friend And I checked into this hotel. I made the reservations through hotels.com. And it seems to be the most affordable and on the river locatio. Immediately when we drove up to the residence, we saw 3 Turkey vultures and no cars. In sight period this was a foreboding and an omen. Not to stay here, but we still went inside. We looked for the office to check in. When we went inside, there was a lovely Indian man and the office smell of. Curry of some sort period he gave us the key to room 19 and we went up 3 flights oupstairs. When we went into the room, we saw an old couch with horrible flowers. On the left, we saw a 1940s air conditioner. On a luggage cart, we saw an old microwave. And we went over to the bed and immediately. My friends that check for bed bugs period the room had no odor of sanitation or cleanliness. It was dark and murky. We opened all the windows to try to let some light in. None of that helped we went outside to look at the "river" and it was more of a green lagoon where people go to die, which is probably why there were so many Turkey vultures around. we went over to the area of where people are supposed to relax outside and look at the "river." There was Turkey vulture poop all over the patio. There were spiders everywhere the umbrella had never been put up.The deck was dirty. The door was held together by a wire hanger that had been twisted to form a hook around a nail. The bathroom was rusty, and Moldy. We left within 10 minutes to an AirbNB. read more

If there was a minus rating this place would qualify. Just don't go there. When we arrived there was nobody to greet us, just a phone number to call to check in. We got a recording, left a message and 10 minutes later on a hot day a woman appeared to ask if we were checking in. The service is non-existent, there are no amenities so if you want something like ice or creamer for coffee, or even coffee, bring your own. The floor in our room was uneven and felt like some of it had wood patching under the old carpeting. There are no safety features like handrails to get down the steps to the garden by the river. And when you get to the garden, the chairs and wobbly tables are covered with bird crap. We were the only guests there for the whole night and I understand why. Wow! This place is amazing! The grounds are beautiful with spectacular views of the river and trees! Private river front with kayaks for your enjoyment and direct access to water! The most dog friendly place! We loved relaxing in this serene environment! The grounds are vast and plenty of room for your furry companion to run around WITHOUT bothering other guests peace of mind. The accommodations are modest, clean and homey! Several units with private balconies and decks! And finally, Jay, the proprietor, of this family run property. This place is the equivalent of a wolf in sheep's clothing; at first glance it looks enchanting and lush with flowers and trees around every corner, but look closer and you'll see what's truly being touted. A moldy, run down, garbage strewn vacation spot with minstrel (BLACK FACE) art proudly adorning the wall next to the managers office. When I asked the office manager about the "art" up on the wall and why they would have something like that there, he told me his wife purchased it in Africa, mind you there were no actual African inspired art pieces or other structures anywhere else on the property. I told him it's considered black face, which is extremely racist, and he was not surprised by this statement (which speaks volumes about the smile he gave when I first snapped a pic of the ornament.) When I pressed him harder as to why he thought that black face ornament was ok to have up, he said it's been up there for years, but he would talk to the owner about taking it down, completely disregarding his previous statement about his wife being the one to purchase, and hang it up there in the first place! Lies upon lies from this guy. Don't be fooled by the close proximity to the river, it's not worth the experience actually having to stay at this intolerant, gross hotel. Additional Griminess/ Safety concerns -Moldy/rotten smell in room -Blood on comforter - Toilet in room has sign next to it suggesting not flushing toilet paper down toilet due to clogging( YES they want you to put your used toilet paper in the garbage instead) -Electrical work is hazardous/crappy next to TV and throughout room( my husband is an electrician) -No cell service and WiFi doesn't work unless right next to office Tip: Stay in Santa Rosa if there are no vacancies elsewhere in Guerneville or Monte Rio, it's a leisurely 20 min drive from S.R. to most Russian River beaches. read more

I fell in love with this place. It is an absolutely peaceful location on the river. Very quiet. And it was amazing to sit outside at night and look at the stars. The room needs some major renovations. They have been though a lot from the floods so don't expect a 5 star room. The gentlemen that runs the hotel is one of the nicest hosts of any hotel I have ever stayed at. He was friendly, very helpful and super accommodating. They also have kayaks available for use by the hotel guests at no extra charge. We took two of them out for a nice paddle down the river. There is a little store across the street and a terrific restaurant is a 5 min walk down the road. It was a very relaxing stay and I will definitely be coming back. read more

The property is run down, the room is small and untidy, the walls had holes in them, and the shower was so tiny the curtain stuck to my body as I showered, and the staff are unprepared and unresponsive. Beyond this, the manager was curt, unprofessional, and outright rude. I booked a room for 3 adults, later discovering the room had only one queen bed. I called AND e-mailed prior to arrival requesting to update or change my reservation. I never received a return call or e-mail about the issue. Because we were only in the room between 7 pm - 9 am the following morning to sleep, we made it work. But the following morning, the manager explained there was a "code violation" and he received "noise complaints" against us. Not only is this untrue, but surely he would have knocked or investigated had there actually been a complaint. There was, however, a group next door to us playing cards with their window open well into the night hours. For $250/night after taxes and fees I expected a lot more. I highly recommend you steer clear of this shabby, expensive, unprofessional establishment. You money would be better spent somewhere else. read more

Room and grounds had so much character and was corky........Bed was so much more comfortable then I had expected, extra blankets and super soft sheets and pillows. Everything needs to be improved. We booked for two nights and left after the first night. We had to stay the first night so just got drunk and things improved somewhat but not much. We were shocked how old and dirty it was. Mold on the windows and couldn't see in the mirrors and the walls were filthy. I was afraid I'd fall through the deck. The first clue was that the parking lot was empty when we arrived and also when we left. They did refund the second night payment. Don't go unless you're crazy or desperate. Sadly, I wholeheartedly agree with the other recent 1-star reviews of this place. As one reviewer said, at first glance it does look enchanting and lush. But when you arrive and set foot in your room, your stomach sort of drops. Not sure where to start, there's so much wrong with this place. - Bedsheets old and worn. No actual comforter, just old bedsheets and a blanket. I had to spray the entire bed with essential oils. - Carpet smells funny - Cobwebs throughout the "kitchenette" meaning this place has not been properly cleaned in ages - No silverware, no papertowels - NONE of the pots or pans were usable. - The patio had not been swept in weeks (maybe months) - Talk about safety? The lock on the main room door as well as the patio were sort of working. - Apparent code violations in terms of electrical wiring (see photo of the light in the bathroom) - Toilet has a sign next to it asking people not to flush it but put it in the garbage pail (this is done in third world countries where the plumbing is too old to accept toilet paper!) As for those free-to-use kayaks? Another guest told us their kayak had a leak in it. The price is ridiculous given the condition it's in. For that kind of money, management could at the very least replace the bed linens, buy new pots and pans and other items for the kitchenette, and do a proper cleaning. We chose this as our first vacation lodging after being recently married. Ya know how you have that 1 spot that you will go to each year for vacation ??? Well this is our new "go to spot" !! Jay was the most gracious host and he always greeted us by our names ! Little store with basic stuff and local wines a short walk away. Kayaks are available to guests. My husband, 4 month old Shepard puppy, and I had the most amazing time this past weekend up at the river. This was our first time staying at the River View and we were extremely happy! Jay made us feel right at home. He gave us a tour of the grounds which are STUNNING and right on the river. Don't expect boujie rooms when you stay here though, expect a comfortable modest stay with gorgeous views and access to the river. The booking was terrible, we arrived with 5 people for a room that has 3 beds. This room is called the family room. We book over a month in advance. Pre confirmed on the phone about how many were coming. Once we arrived we all gathered in the lobby, he started making up laws about there can only be 3 people per room. Later on we found out that 5 was the max for that room, We had 5. Over all the manager was very shady, I had to call my bank to stop him from charging me multiple times after we left. This place is horrible! The rooms are not well maintained. There was a foul smell. The turkey buzzards were creepy. The wifi didn't work. The carpet appeared soiled. This property is so beautiful, with lush gardens and It's right on the river. The owner Jay makes sure everything is comfortable for you. He lives on site and is very friendly and accommodating. Our room had a queen size bed and futon, a deck, and a small but very useful kitchen. There are 2 grills for guests to use (propane is provided, bring your own charcoal). The property has lots of common area, is very dog friendly, and we met great people who were repeat guests because they love this place so much. I highly recommend paying a visit. If you are a minimalist, and simply would like somewhere to crash that is is close to the river, has nice sheets, pretty landscape and is run by a clearly respectable hard working man, you will be happy here. SCENE If you don't plan to do more than sleep, and you are not a light sleeper, or the sound of the road doesn't bother you; or you sleep with earplugs, this place may be appropriate for you. If you plan to party somewhere else and literally just need a place decent enough to pass out in that is somewhat reminiscent of a motel by the river, this place is for you. DRAWBACKS Now, if you are a creature of comfort and require bright lights and sterile countertops, this place is not for you. If flat screen TVs and fresh ground coffee are a minimum requirement, then this place is not for you. If you can't deal with the sound of ducks at 6:30am or feeling like you are sleeping on the freeway because the walls are so thin, this place is not for you. MY EXPERIENCE I'm not a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination, but I've also traveled enough to not have high expectations when making last minute reservations in a high peak time so close to the "beach." I wanted a place walking distance to the yellow house and my friends hot tub at their cabin, but also privacy of my own amenities. I did not utilize any amenities, even though I paid $160ish for one night... generally not ok but given the season and nature of my last minute visit, I can't complain. BOTTOM LINE I stayed at the highland dell last time and assumed this was like that - I was wrong. If you rent here, you are getting a superior view but inferior amenities. For one or two who just want to beach bum it then bunk it, I think you'll be happy. If you're humble, you'll be happy. I stayed in A16 and the view was nice. TIP Book early and try to get their nicest room. I'm positive not all of the rooms are of the same quality - hence the mixed reviews. read more

Just don't do it. Don't be misled by the affordable room rates. Or the photo views of the river. Or these 5-star Yelp reviews. Or the charm of Jay, the owner and/or manager. We made each of these mistakes. It's all one big deception. This place is, to put it charitably, a dump. Our room smelled like a combination of mildew and fungicide. The "furnishings" and "decor" were of the extremely cheap thrift store variety: Lumpy, badly worn, uncomfortable, dirty, broken, mismatched, you name it. The carpet needs replacing. The bed filled a small anteroom off the living room--literally so. From the opposite wall to the door, and almost end to end. You could not enter the room and walk around the bed; you could only climb on it. The bathroom was disgusting. It was not well cleaned. The towels were paper thin and without the benefit of fabric softener, and may well have come from the aforementioned thrift store. We used the bath mat to plug the gap under the front door, which was large enough to admit both an unhealthy draft and who knows how many bugs. The property's grounds were junk-strewn, with laughable attempts at "landscaping." Oh, and the free wi-fi? Yes, but only perhaps if you are in the main building with close proximity to the office. We had to leave our room and walk down to and stand near the office. (You can sit at an ancient, nearby picnic table, but watch out for the bird poop.) The River View Garden Resort is neither garden-like nor anything resembling a resort. The only reason we stayed was the lack of acceptable vacancies in the area. We simply decided to tough it out, touch as few surfaces as possible, and get the hell out when the sun came up. You're welcome. read more

My partner and I have been staying at the Inn over 30 years so once in a while when we're in the Monte area we would drop in and reminisce with whoever owned it at that time, recently we dropped in again after many years, we drove down the short hill and got out. The place was a mess, leaves everywhere, on the landings of the units trash lying around. We though the place had been closed for some time, about to leave when out strolled the owner chewing on a mouthful of food mumbling "what do you want?' very rude. The open mouth chewing itself a direct insult. We started on our reminiscing stories and he cut me off after one sentence with "I don't give a damn about your stories, we're not open" and spun around and headed back into the house. It took us a bit of time to turn the car around in the limited space and as we drove off we heard him yelling loudly at someone else in the house. Love this place! Jay the manager bent over backwards to take care of my teen boys, my dog, and me. The building looks like it was apartments that were turned into a hotel. The gardens are pretty and the river is beautiful. There are benches and tables in the garden, the grassy area above the little beach, on on the patios on each floor. The patios are perfect for morning coffee or evening drinks with a view of the Russian river. In the morning you'll here all the birds in the are. My room was VERY clean. The grounds were lovely but we won't be back. Our room was just nasty. It's a shame. Everything was kind of put together from thrift shops so was mismatched, which is no deal breaker, but practically everything in the room was broken or icky. I mean, the inside of the fridge had rust; the grout in the tile was stained, missing, or moldy looking; towel ring was broken and unusable; mini-blinds #1 were a mess; mini-blinds #2 were broken; door to the vanity was missing a hinge so just hanging there; the drapes weren't hemmed at the ends... they were just cut with scissors so had threads hanging; the vanity mirror was peeling away. I mean a few of these can be overlooked. But everything was a mess. It's frustrating when all you want to do is close blinds and can't do it. So if you go there... just come home at night and leave the lights off. Seriously. read more

First star- as mentioned in previous reviews, Jay was really nice. Second star- the grounds are undeniably pretty. I stayed here last minute after calling every place else in the area and while I was glad there was a vacancy on a weekend, I actually considered sleeping in my car for a full minute. For the record, I was in room A3. I felt compelled to write this review for any other women traveling alone, since this was actually the first time that Yelp has ever steered me wrong. SAFETY: -The room's dead bolt didn't work- Jay did fix it for me while I was at dinner after I made a stink. -There were NO LIGHTS outside my door, so when I came home from dinner in the dark and tried to get the key in the door, I felt VERY unsafe, especially since the door was off a weird space with old BBQs, an ironing board left out to weather, and a seemingly abandoned dog house, among other detritus. -Sliding door that had NO LOCK- a rod to put in the track to keep it closed was provided though. DECOR: -The room smelled like it had never seen the light of day. -Weird half windows on one side of room with curtains that were in need of a good bleaching. -Holes in sofa. PAPER THIN WALLS- I can tell you without a doubt that the couple next door to me was having sex until 5:30a.m. and that Jay (or his wife) snores. Since, clearly, I had an outlier experience based on others' reviews, I'm not saying don't stay here- just know which rooms to ask for I guess. For me, next time I'll definitely make a rez ahead of time at the Highland Dell just across the river. read more

The five stars are for the host, Jay, who was pleasant, kind, friendly, and accommodating. Last minute decision to stay overnight, lucky to find a place in high season. The room itself was very basic, and a bit run down, but clearly Jay takes pride in doing the best with what he has available. Don't expect fancy amenities or fluffy towels - basic motel 6 accommodation but it is the location that you are paying for. Beautiful riverside location and a wonderful carefree garden to walk through, with places to sit, hammocks, picnic tables. The walls are paper thin though - a lot of clumping from upstairs and people walking by on the stairs and deck above. Luckily was not spending a lot of time in the room but the time I was in the room was not very quiet. People also smoked on the deck outside my room which was an issue. I would hope the owners would restrict smoking to the parking lot and garden, rather than on the decks because the smoke blows into the rooms. It's only a few steps more. read more

I don't require much but when there is a sign in the bathroom that cautions guests not to flush toilet paper down the commode you understand that something is seriously wrong here. Apparently, the waste basket in the bathroom is the proper place to dispose of used tp. I stayed in a downstairs room where the plumbing drains obviously do not have enough grade to flush away tp. I left after one night forfeiting $200 for my my second nights stay. Additionally. the ants were not a welcome amenity. BTW, I am a happy, content person who is not in the habit of complaining about anything, even when disappointed about anything. Jay runs a great little inn. The River View reminds me of many inns I've stayed at abroad - homely, unique, communal feeling, and very relaxing. We stayed here the other night because it was the only room that we could find in the Guerneville area. Not that big a deal or an indicator. Really sweet rooms (though, weird doll collection?) and the nicest owner EVER.. private beach and just a block down from Monte Rio's public beach where you can rent kayaks and canoes. Our room was on the top floor and we had a great view of the river. There are kitchenettes in the rooms, hammocks to hang out on, and lovely gardens. The downside was that it had obviously been a long time since our room was stayed in and probably hadn't been cleaned since, evident from the dust on the end table and the giant spider web on the plant. Also, no forks in the kitchenette. It probably wont be a return to destination, but I'm glad we stayed there and definitely wouldn't be upset if we just happened upon it again. read more

9/1/14 we just checked out of this quaint little Inn. Jay was very nice and they allow pets which as you know is sometimes hard to find. We found this place last minute holiday weekend and we're very happy. Right on your own beach, the other guests were very nice and friendly. Bring some wine and kick back at the beach, take out the canoe/kayak provided by the Inn. Water was perfect as was the days. You'll enjoy your stay. Bring something to BBQ and some food snacks, you literally don't have to leave. Theres a little store 50 yards away, but no restaurants open after 5pm, hence bring some BBQ Like I said, great host, clean rooms, very beautiful flowered gardens. We'll definitely stay again. Stayed here for a family wedding and we took up most of the rooms. The resort isn't fancy but it has charm galore with multiple outdoor seating areas, hammocks, kayaks, river floats, and our host, Jay, who is an absolute gem and so considerate. The location of the resort is gorgeous--right on the river--and convenient to many restaurants (we liked the Garden Grill outdoor patio). It's an easy 15 minute drive to the coast and many beautiful beaches. Wineries everywhere. Coffee and breakfast snacks provided by Jay bright and early every morning. We loved it for an informal family gathering and would stay here again. read more

Our stay at RVGR was nothing but wonderful, welcoming and most importantly right on its own private river! It's such a peaceful place that we ended up staying an extra night. It's also a great place b/c some rooms have kitchenettes so we were able to get up and make breakfast and leisurely plan our day. Also, If one of us wanted to go on a hike and the other just wanted to stay at the room and go into the river, staying behind was never boring, it was relaxing. The rooms are rustic, but clean and actually comfortable. When we were there - it appeared that there were many returning guests which is always a good sign. Paradise, everytime we go that's how I feel. We had the best time. We stayed 3 nights this time and it wasn't long enough. We will be returning asap. It's so quiet and the gardens are beautiful! On our last evening we grilled with Jay and some of the other fun guests, it felt like family. Lots of laughter. Jay contributed sausages and fresh squash from his vegetable garden and we broke bread together. We are already planning our next trip. I stopped by to check out this lodging...an Eastern India man approach me and I asked him if he had any availability...he said yes...after all it was late September and mid-week. I ask him if he could show me a room. On the way up the stairs I asked him what the mid week rate was and he said 189.00...moments later he opened the door to a dingy room with worn out carpets that smelled badly. The beds looked like they had come out of an army surplus barracks. I said to the man, I think that you are asking too much for these accommodations and he scoffed at me saying that everything was fine until I showed up...I walked out shaking my head in wonderment as how this guy to run a business...the airbnb properties in the area are twice as nice and half the price...avoid this place. read more

Ray- you made my birthday weekend absolutely magical. I was so bummed at first that my pre-planned camping adventure weekend was rained out, however, the boyfriend surprised me with a stay at this magical place. Ray hooked us up with a fabulous room complete with couch, kitchen, views, and even let us eat some of his amazing "Indian Tacos" he was cooking up downstairs! Don't think I've met anyone as genuine, kind, sincere, and willing to go the extra-mile as the owners of River View Garden Resort. From the initial phone call to make a reservation, until the time we checked out, we were absolutely pampered and spoiled. Nothing was too much trouble. In this day and age, people like this are far and few between. The resort is perfectly situated on the river, has beautiful, well-kept grounds, spacious wrap-around decks on which to lounge, and management is happy to provide almost any amenity one could think of.
