Ridiculously over priced for a run-down, poorly maintained cluster of cabins. The beds are dreadful, the pillows are the worst we've ever had at a hotel. The hot tubs aren't at all private and the walls are paper-thin. Our room had a junked old car parked out in front, a spotlight that shone through the glass above the door straight onto the bed, a motion-activated light that came on and off outside the window all night... Oh and when we arrived at 3pm on a Saturday they were using gas powered weed whackers for nearly two hours outside our room. Truly one of the worst hotel experiences I've had at any price, let alone the insane $403 we were charged for one night with two dogs. Avoid! read more

A good friend of mine got married along the cliffs at Salt State Park, just north of Fort Ross Lodge, years ago. It was a small intimate ceremony. Almost all attendees stayed at Fort Ross Lodge, which was the perfect place for us to relax and spend time together before and after the wedding. Since then, I've gone to FRL at least three times, and every time has been memorable. Each room has its own special features: a hot tub, a wood-burning fireplace, outdoor grill and/or amazing view. The rooms and grounds in general are peaceful and comfortable. I sleep so well there. I also love the sauna and the convenience store across the street. I know there are other places to stay in the area, but none seem to have the same charm as FRL. Finally, the manager, Josh, and all the people who work there are outstanding. They communicate clearly and often. When I book reservations, the confirmation emails and follow-up phone calls are helpful and reassuring. Josh is responsive and cares about the quality of your experience, which is one of the reasons I keep going back. Don't take my word for it, check it out yourself :) read more

What a sweet unpretentious find! We loved the warm welcoming staff, the room we booked which had a private hot tub, fireplace, fridge and microwave, and especially the ocean views. There's a short walk to the bluffs and closer to the lodge are Adirondack chairs to sit and stare out at the beautiful coast. No food service but the Fort Ross store across the street is connected to the lodge and offers beer on draft, sandwiches made to order and many high end grocery items. Perfect place! Quiet, calm, cozy, great view! A great place for a family vacation. Hot tube in the backyard overlooking the ocean, what could be better? Only a grill in addition to this and there is one too! Either way this place deserves 5 stars. But for the money you charge, it would be nice to get a little more comfort. A queen size bed is not enough for the most expensive room. I would like to have slippers so that I could go to the hot tub, because the asphalt around is quite cold. read more

We came here for a nice getaway and was visiting this part of the coast and this was a perfect place to stop for the night. The room was good sized and I especially liked the table and kitchenette area. The warm white robes were nice after a shower or dip in the spa. I was told they had a spa and sauna which were real close to the room but we didn't use them. The manager was super helpful and was very accommodating and wanted our stay to be the best it could be and made himself available for any questions or needs. Our room was well stocked and we didn't need a thing. I wish we would have brought something to cook on the grill that they had on the patio, really nice feature. The fireplace was cost as well, weather was nice when we visited but it was nice for ambiance. The view of the sunset right off the patio was the best. Looks like rooms 5-8 have a better view but #4 was nice too. You can always walk a little ways to get that perfect view too. read more

It's my favorite place to take a "retreat" for a day. The rooms are very private, with a patio and a bbq grill and some are facing the ocean and have a private spa. They do have a pool and spa as well for all guests, and most rooms are pet friendly with a reasonable charge for the entire visit. Heading there tomorrow for an overnight! read more

Really nice stay, paid a little extra for full ocean view and it was definitely worth it. Viewed and took photos of a large amount of whale activity as well as dolphins. Went south about 200 yds to a cove that is protected, seals were barking like mad, got amazing photos of the sunset. Be warned, regardless of whether you come from the north or south it's going to be a long and winding road. Mendocino is worth a day trip, also went to Marin Fresh cheese creamery in Petaluma both were pretty good drives and both were worth the drive. read more

Beautiful view! It happened to be rainy. We stayed in number 4. The rooms are cozy. Wall mounted TV. Direct TV works well. There is a dvd player. Keurig with plenty of teas but 2 French roast and 2hazelnut pods and 2 decaf coffee. We had a gas stove in room controlled by wall thermostat. Linens comfortable. Cozy robes. Bed is firm. Microwave and mini fridge. Internet works pretty well. View is amazing. Staff quickly checked us in and were friendly. Cons:Main hot tub out of order. There is another hot tub by 9 can use but looks like someone staying there. There is a small grocery across the street. I wouldn't rely on the store though they were not closed yet 40 mins left and didn't want to make sandwiches. No where to get more coffee pods. It says the heat is controlled on the thermostat, we literally had a small pilot light burn the whole time and it did not warm the room. New flooring vinyl but popping up in 1 place , bathroom is 90's or even late 80's. Everything works just quirks like the sink has no stopper and the water comes out sideways. No cell service. Overall the view is amazing. It's dog friendly you get your stars from me for that -even though we didn't bring ours. If I ever came back I would bring coffee pods , shampoo, a space heater, something for dinner and breakfast. In my mind I'm probably not staying here again. read more

I like it here. The staff is warm, friendly and accommodating. The grounds are clean and very quiet. The room is comfortable and warm. Enough things were provided in the room for us to grill up a steak, shrimp and vegetables, and we had a lovely dinner. Nothing much around here for miles, make sure you grab stuff to eat from the stores in Bodega or Gualala before arriving. The Fort Ross Store across the street is great too, in case you forgot something. There are a few restaurants nearby (2), but you won't get much of a selection... so if you're coming here for several days I'd plan on grilling unless you want to drive for an hour or more each time you want to eat. read more

We stayed here for a wedding as there weren't very many options in the area and this was right on sight of the wedding venue. Making it very convenient for us. It was a beautiful venue for that. The staff was friendly and helpful. The convenience store across the street, was well stocked and served delicious clam chowder. We also enjoyed the sauna on a cold ocean breezy night. The cost of the room was affordable and fair for the location. However, the facilities and room we stayed in were uncomfortably dirty, outdated and not well maintained. Starting with the floors, we noticed dog hair and debris as soon as we walked in. There was a soft layer of dust on all the furniture as well. In the bathroom, the toilet seat was peeling and flaky (talk about uncomfortable) and the toilet paper was located far out of reach from the toilet, which was not convenient (if you can imagine shuffling over after you've done your business to grab some TP) . There were issues with the plumbing. One being that the water is brown (probably due to high iron), which left a permanent brown stained bathroom sink and brown toilet water. The shower drain was clogged, leaving you standing in your roommates dirty bath water if you wanted to use it after them, unless you had a half hour to wait for it to drain. The shower was a black acrylic material, I imagine this was intentionally by design to hide any other stains. Our room did not have a hot tub, so we were looking forward to using the community hot tub, unfortunately that was found to be unusable, and full of moss when we arrived. Lastly, there's not very good sound proofing in the rooms. We could hear our neighbors talking next door late at night while we were trying to sleep. It is unfortunate the lodge itself is less than desirable because Fort Ross is such a beautiful location. Maybe this is how they're able to keep cost affordable for guest. Although I would still like to make the following suggestions to Fort Ross Lodge as it could greatly improve the quality of future guests experiences: a new toilet seat, deeper cleaning, better soundproofing, updating bathrooms and plumbing. Thank you for allowing us to stay here. I understand it takes a great expense and lots of work to operate a business. These folks went above and beyond! I stayed here a couple of months ago and just as I arrived, a huge storm hit. The team at Fort Ross did everything they could to make my stay as smooth as possible when the electricity went out in the area -- they brought candles, made sure I had hot water and food, and made sure the heat was keeping me toasty. I know my experience wasn't a typical stay, but if you're looking for a beautiful place with kind and caring hosts, this is a great place to consider. read more

I've been coming to the lodge for almost 32 years and have always had a wonderful relaxing time. Unfortunately, after our previous visit, I thought we might not be back. The bed was uncomfortable and the hot tub was just warm water. It was so disappointing. But that has changed!!! This time the bed was so comfortable, with lots of pillows and a new hot tub with a seat you can stretch out and relax in on the patio! The water is deep, the jets work great and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We love sitting in the hot tub and looking at the ocean. Fort Ross Lodge provided a BBQ, Coals, BBQ tools, a mini frig, a microwave, utensils, and a beautiful set of stoneware dishes. There's a coffee machine with coffee pods, tea, creamer, sugar, and swizzle sticks. Plus, really nice terry cloth robes hanging in the closet for use and nice big towels for when you get out of the hot tub. There's also a fireplace and everything you'll need to enjoy it (except we spent so much time in the hot tub relaxing that we crashed before we could start it). The only thing missing in this room is a set of reclining wingback chairs, lol. Could I find something wrong, of course, but why, it was a fantastic stay. Thank you, Fort Ross Lodge. Wow. If you don't like staying here, it's a you problem. Friendly efficient staff. Clean comfortable rooms. For a price not much more than your average Marriott/Hilton, you can have a room with a view, and what a view! Sit & sip wine on the very private back porch of Room 6 with nothing between you & the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean other than flowers (March?, we enjoyed yellow, red & white flowers) & some windswept pines. Nice clean spacious gym with its own ocean view. Wife & I brought Trader Joe snacks, meals, & wines with us so we could maximize our time relaxing in our room enjoying our view, but we learned there is a relatively inexpensive & very comprehensive convenience store right across the street. Ft Ross Lodge is minutes from Ft Ross State Park (see my 5/5 review!), and just 10 miles south of Stillwater Cove. You could (& should!) spend a week with Ft Ross Lodge as a wonderful base camp, touristing the North Coast then relaxing each afternoon/evening in your unique wonderful Ft Ross Lodge room. read more

I will try to be as objective as I can, entirely based on my experience. Not quite sure how this motel got such a high rating (still scratching my head). I also reserved this motel based on the good reviews I saw on Yelp and Tripadvisor, but I was pretty disappointed. The motel setting is ok, but be aware that all double rooms have no direct ocean view. You do not have an access to beaches, but there are good ones close by. The hotel is located at secluded area off of Hwy 1. Russian historic center is within 5min away, and pretty interesting. Their WiFi is actually pretty good, but the TV had no channel (direct TV connected, but did not work when we were there). We were not there to watch TV, so it did not bother us much. There is a nice small store across the motel selling foods and basics, so it was greatly convenient. People there were very nice and helpful. This motel room needs a major make over. It is barely 2 star quality motel, reminded me Motel 6 that I stayed when I was in college. The room in general smells old and stuffy, and bathroom amenities they use are cheap stuffs. When we were there, the sinks were all clogged up. TV, microwave, and refrigerator in the room were all old and cheap stuffs. There was no AC in the room, but there is a wobbly ceiling fan. I guess an AC is too much to ask for a motel like this. There is a gas fire place, which will be nice in winter. Carpets have some stains here and there, and our beds had some hairs from previous guests. Our room was located right off Hwy 1, so you have noise from the traffic on Hwy1. When there is no traffic, this place is dead quite. That means the traffic sounds louder too. Hoping to hear some sound of wave? Well, you can hear that at late night when there is no traffic. It has a distant ocean view from our patio if we open up the front sliding door and look out. The view was pretty much blocked by another building in front. They also advertise that there is a BBQ grill, which guests can use. Yes, they do offer that, but if you want to use it, make sure you bring your own aluminum foils to cover up the old and beaten up grill and grill accessories because it looked like the grill was never cleaned or replaced. Pretty disgusting to see some food remaining from previous users. Not sure how old it has been there. This motel is not family friendly. We stayed at a double room with two kids (8 and 10), and they charged us $25 per kid per night (waived $25, so ended up paying $75 for two nights). So what did they offer extra? No extra towels, no extra soaps. Yes, extra water! They blamed us that we did not tell them we needed extra towels. Well, they knew we have two children when they charged us extra. We visited there during COVID, so they conveniently (blaming COVID) skipped the daily room make up. We found this out late (there was a sign not easily seen), so we asked for towels (they gave us 2 sets to begin with). They gave us 2 big towels for 4 people stay. What about the extra children charges? Again, they said they did not know we had children. WTH? In summary, this motel is located where you can see pacific ocean from far distance. It is not ocean front or has a beach access. I don't think they claimed those either. I think that's about it. The room with 2 double beds we stayed is pretty low quality. Do not expect their rooms will meet their price point. Plus, their children policy is pretty bad. I recommend staying at other place if you plan to bring your kids. This motel is not a family friendly place. If you are looking for some nicer and newer place to stay (not a motel), this will not meet your expectation. Exchanged several emails with the hotel keepers after our stay (they requested for our feedback, then they got upset because of my frank feedback), but unfortunately they don't seem to understand the issues customers experienced. They blamed all of our complaints to "we did not know since you did not tell us, so all your fault." We asked for a refund for the children charge, but they rejected (obviously..... I did not even expect they would refund it). They seem to think we are going after some money. We asked for the refund as a symbolic reason so they learn and don't do this kinda BS business to some other family. Pretty lucky to run a business where competition is sparse. read more

My wife and I just celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary on Valentine's Day staying at the Fort Ross Lodge. We had a great time and really enjoyed staying here. Upon arriving we were greeted by a really nice gentleman who answered any questions we had. We were so happy when we arrived to our room, #17. The room had a fridge, a bbq, a fireplace with supplied wood, a kitchen area with all our needed utensils, tv with DVD player if you want to watch movies or dir tv, we never turned it on, a really nice hot tub that we enjoyed a lot while we gazed off at the ocean. The bed was really comfortable, the bathroom had lots of hot water and clean towels and toiletries. The lodge is definitely remote so take their advice and bring food to eat or plan on going to places that they mention on their site. The Fort Ross store across the street does have a pretty good selection of things you may need and they are super friendly. Even some on tap beers and deli sandwiches. We will go back again to enjoy the beauty of Fort Ross Lodge, sitting in the hot tub watching the ocean or the stars. read more

We discovered this driving by on our camping roadtrip and both looked at each other and said "we should stay here." But we pressed on assuming the pricing would be outrageous. We did a little research and were stoked to find out it was so fairly priced, so we made it the bookend to our roadtrip. This spot was a welcome escape. The rooms are spacious and clean. The private deck space and hot tub with unbelievable views were sooo relaxing. We loved bbqing and just making the most of the property. The staff was very present and professional but a breath of fresh air in their approach to managing the property. This hotel is a great escape while still keeping comfort in mind. I just stayed two nights in one of the king rooms and couldn't have been happier. The bed was more comfortable than I've had in high end Hilton hotels. The linens are soft and there are enough to load up the bed if that's your style (I like the weight on me). The rooms face the ocean and have a set of deck chairs so you can sit out and watch and hear the waves. There isn't much to detract from the experience, the road is just far enough removed and the location spread out enough that you really don't get bothered by distractions. The rooms come with a free-standing fireplace and wood ready to start up a comfortable fire and if that's not your idea of fun/relaxation a normal heater is included to keep the rooms at just the right temperature. There is a community sauna and hot tub but the king rooms come with their own 3~4 person hot tubs / spas that enjoys the same incredible ocean view. I spent my first evening eating steak and corn I cooked on the BBQ while I watched a beautiful sunset and then moved into the hot tub while the moon glided across the sky and the stars came out. There are limitations prospective lodgers should be aware of and are outlined on the website, will be discussed with the front desk, and a full list of which is emailed to people on their reservation. Each room has a microwave and a BBQ (briquettes provided as part of the room) and that is the extent of the cooking options and you need to bring your own utensils, dishes, and cooking supplies. This wasn't a problem for me, I came prepared. The closest restaurant is about 12 miles away on the same road you took to get there (not a fast trip) and there are more options the further you go. There is a small market just up the hill but I've not visited it. The rooms come with a limited set of english and spanish channels provided by one of the satellite TV companies but there is no cellular service within a few miles (north and south on the highway). The owners are expanding WiFi service to include all of the rooms but their Internet service is slow and can't supposed streamed services like NetFlix of Spotify (pull too much data and it will kick you off the network automatically for 3~5 minutes). I will be going back for another solo trip next Winter and my wife and I are planning on going in a year for our anniversary. read more

Alejandro and Jamie are perfect hosts! My wife and rolled into this place an hour before sunset and we're in awe of the view and the silence. Coming from the hustle and bustle of the East Bay Area to the quiet serenity of Fort Ross Lodge is priceless! They had a BBQ on our back patio that looked out over the pacific so we brought and grilled a couple ribeyes for dinner, the lodge provided charcoal, plates, knives and forks, as well as tools for the bbq!! We stayed in a king size room, which had a gas fireplace king size bed and simple bathroom, perfect for our one night stay. We met one other guest, Eric, there and they also commented on the peaceful tranquility of the lodge! Thank you all for a wonderful night and restful sleep!! read more

This place needs a major update makeover. It's worn out .The staff are nice and they seem to be holding this place together with bubblegum and bailing wire. It is a beautiful location and the grounds are gorgeous, but the rooms need a lot of update attention. Chris & Alecia we're amazing, they welcomed us whole heartedly. The fire was warm and the bed very cozy (rm #5!) Amenities were good,I would just bring silverware and a roll of paper towels if you plan on eating. Bring stuff to bbq, store across the street is limited. My boyfriend and I absolutely loved our weekend stay here. It was so nice & relaxing. The views were amazing and we were completely satisfied with our room. Not sure if I interacted with the owners or managers but they were very nice. The hot tub & ocean view absolutely made this place!! After looking at some other reviews I can say that we stayed in room #5 and we had no problems with Direct TV. The WiFi was great. The only tip I can give others is to bring food to cook with you....and possibly an ice chest. There is a mini fridge in the room, but it's a mini fridge. I didn't investigate ahead of time but there's not really any restaurants near by for breakfast & dinner. There's a few in Jenner but I found most were pricey & bougie. So we went into Guerneville to eat. With the windy road it took about 45 minutes. But this was completely my fault for not investigating better. I still give the place 5 stars and would go back. read more

Love this lodge. I definitely want to go back. There aren't many options in the area for places to stay other than camping, but I would actually choose Fort Ross as a destination to visit over somewhere else because I know I will have a comfortable, enjoyable stay. My partner and I came on our road bikes from Occidental. The innkeepers were very welcoming and friendly. They had excellent customer service over the phone and were patient with our questions and flexible. They were kind and thoughtful enough to inform us that the shop across the street would close at 6pm since they knew we were coming in by bike and would need food. When we got there they went above and beyond to make sure all our needs were met. They lent us plates and utensils, pulled up the bus schedule for the next day in case I wasn't feeling up to riding back, and were just very helpful overall. The room was very clean and the bed was super comfortable. Very cute inside too with those little touches that make a huge difference - a cutting board and knife for cheese, wine glasses, a wine bottle opener... though ours didn't, several rooms have their own personal hot tubs on the private porch. They have a "community" pool and hot tub as well in case you want to cut costs but still enjoy the spa. They also offer a bbq and free charcoal for it. This is right on the ocean, so the view is amazing. We were tired, but walked about 100 feet to watch the beautiful sunset from the grass. They have the standard hotel coffee with the powdered creamer in the room, but they offer better coffee with a Keurig in the front office with the pods of liquid creamer. Again, little things that make a huge difference to me when I'm traveling. So overall, excellent experience and will definitely be back. P.S. I have no idea what that one reviewer was talking about with the rude innkeepers. They aren't rude at all. I feel that that person must have been judgmental about how they look or something because they are bikers (motorcycles). Don't be put off. They are awesome. read more

Really not sure what some people are complaining about. If you don't like bugs then maybe the Coast is not for you. This is not a five star hotel but they treat you like a million bucks! Deb is amazing! She hilarious and really takes pride in her job and knowledge of the surrounding areas. The owners are really nice and funny too! We rented room 17 for the night and fell in love so quickly we decided to stay another. The rooms was pricey but worth it for the privacy patio with a grill and private hot tub. The fireplace was great to unwind to nightly! We choose the larger room on the corner for the privacy and peace. We were not disappointed. So happy we chose to stay here for our 15 year anniversary. They even gave us a complimentary bottle of champagne . We love this place and plan to make it yearly tradition. read more

We stayed here for the closing weekend of abalone diving. The Sonoma coast has a "Big Sur" feel to it.... very tranquil, gorgeous coastline, and small town ambiance. The Fort Ross Lodge is super close to Timber Cove (where we dive) so it was very convenient for us. Our room (#3) was clean and cozy, with a comfy bed, wi-fi, wood burning stove, and nice bathroom/shower. I liked the extra touches of providing wine glasses and a cheese board. We had a small balcony for drying our gear and sat on the picnic table right beyond our balcony to watch the sunset. There is also a "Sun Room" near the outdoor jacuzzi, which is sunny (hence the name), has a few comfy couches and looks like a great place to catch up on your reading. For a Sunday night stay (with ocean view and fireplace) it was $130+ tax! I'm sure this is a low season rate, but such a steal! It felt like being on vacation and was soooo relaxing. With the stove making the room super toasty, I got a blissful 10 hours of sleep. Will definitely return to this place next year! read more
