Run Away!
After staying at the Bodega Harbor Inn in mid-September 2008, I can only wonder if there's another motel by the same name in a parallel universe, where the reviewers who gave this place a good rating stayed. Surely we can't be talking about the same inn. I found the Bodega Harbor Inn not only un-charming, but also uncomfortable, rundown, and dirty.
We stayed in room 11, opting for a smaller, less-expensive room because we were in the area for a wedding and didn't expect to be spending much time in the room. What I didn't realize is that even the little time we absolutely had to be in the room would be too much. Let me preface my comments by saying that I'm no hothouse flower who thinks every motel should be the Ritz, but for $120 plus tax, I expect the room to at least be clean, comfortable, and temperate.
Let me just hit the lowlights:
The room was tiny and did not have a closet (only a small armoire). A large wicker chair took up a goodly amount of the already-minimal floor space, leaving nowhere for two people to place their luggage. The plastic blinds on the window were bent and the wand for opening and closing them was broken off--fortunately in the closed position.
It was cold when we arrived and the electric baseboard heater wouldn't come on. The desk clerk came over with a screwdriver and tightened up something, telling us the control had just been knocked loose. Ah, blessed heat! (This would later come back to haunt me.)
As soon as we began settling in, we realized the room was far from clean. Behind the bathroom door, the floor and baseboards were dirty, there was a suspicious-looking smear of something red on the bathroom door, and a long brown hair stuck to the bathtub, I'm assuming from the previous occupant. The two sets of towels were small and thin, obviously having seen better days.
None of this boded well, but the final blow came when we got into bed. The sheets were a low-threadcount textured material that was rough to the touch. Every time I turned in bed that night, the abrasiveness of the sheets woke me. I passed a very long, miserable, and mostly sleepless night and was ready to check out the next day. I was only prevented from leaving by the fact that we had to be at the wedding at the exact time we would have been able check in at a different motel. When I asked the person at the front desk if they could put a different kind of sheet on the bed, she looked at me in disbelief and said no one had ever had a problem with the sheets before. She then came to the room to feel the sheets for herself. She didn't seem to think the sheets were bad, but said she'd see what they could do. To their credit, they did manage to find a different type of sheet and change the bed.
Returning late at night from the wedding, I jumped into bed with the new sheets, looking forward to making up for the previous sleepless night. Wrong! The electric baseboard heater that was reluctant to come ON the night before now couldn't be turned OFF, turning the room into a sweltering inferno. My second sleepless night was spent sweating into the new sheets and getting up every hour to open the door to let cool air into our sauna of a room. By morning, I was miserable, sleep-deprived, and anxious to see the Bodega Harbor Inn in my rearview mirror.
Although our original plan was to stay a third night, we bailed out early the next morning, not knowing where we would stay that night, but not caring as long as it wasn't the Bodega Harbor Inn.
In summary, although this may be one of the less-expensive places to stay in the area, next time I'll gladly pay a bit extra to stay somewhere else that allows me the luxury of actually SLEEPING. What a disappointment. read more
