Bodega is exactly the kind of place you want around the corner from you. We've been speed walking past it for years, now, inevitably late on our way to school / work, or home from work (with a surreptitious glance at a World Cup game for scores) to relieve the babysitter. Shockingly, tonight was the first time we'd ever successfully tried to go -- and given just how pleasant it was, we are sad we waited so long. Bodega 88 is a miniature island of chill, where all factors inspire relaxation. The overall experience was lovely: great music, gracious staff, well priced, well made happy hour drinks, and food that often punched above its weight. Wait staff could not have been more competent and kind, and we loved that many seemed to be long-haulers who recognized (or were recognized by) regulars, and took the time to chat. We enjoyed the beautifully made garlic shrimp, which came with richly roasted garlic and butter sauce. The ingredients were not particularly high brow, but were so well prepared that there wasn't even a suggestion of fishiness. Tacos, made with packaged tortillas and a copious amount of crema were fine, not a kitchen strength. Empanaditas were not well blotted, but were well filled. The only flaw this place has is not being closer to my regular rotation of spots. The service is beyond cordial, friendly, warm and kind. If you happen to stop by when the owner, David, is around say hello. He's very friendly, a definite local and a pleasure to know! The food is phenomenal as are their drinks. They have happy hour specials so be sure to check it out. The decor is thoughtful, deliberate and innovative. Most importantly, the whole place is spotless and clean at ALL times. Cudos to my waitress who was also the bartender, who also took EVERY order in the joint & didn't miss a beat. I felt so bad, my friend wanted to help her!! I like that Bodega has an early HH starting at 11. My friends and I came here for that purpose.... The white sangria and margaritas are both BOMB!! I love it when I can enjoy a HH and not wake up with a headache the following day from cheap liquor. For appetizers we had the Soy Garlic wings, Pineapple Passion Wings, Chimichuri Fries, Shrimp Mofongitos & Calamari. EVERYTHING was good with the soy garlic wings being my fav. We came here for drinks before a movie! They have a million seats indoor and out! There was no wait and we could choose whatever seat we wanted! I got the piña colada! I couldn't help but take a sip before I took a picture! So don't be afraid, they give you way more than that! It was delicious and tasted as if there was a hint of orange in it. Refreshing! I didn't get to eat there but I enjoyed the outdoor seating! The drinks were strong and tasty, we got the margarita, mojito and the red and white sangria (the white was better). The waiter was friendly and there were a lot of places to sit which I appreciated. I've noticed a lot of outdoor places are barely 6 feet apart but this one really felt separated. I especially liked that the tables were in the shade because of the way the sun falls so even in the 91 degrees, it didn't feel overwhelmingly hot! read more

Came back for about the 20th time. It just seems like the service and food quality are going downhill compared to a year ago. The drinks and food took extremely Long to come out. The waitress was kind but didn't check in on us much. Friend who manages a restaurant said waiters usually ignore your table when the food is late because they don't want to be asked where's the food. The beef on the mofonquitos was funny tasting and rubbery ( and that's my fav dish there) but this time it wasn't. The owner is there nightly...drinking and drinking some more without assisting much, if at all. Sad but true. Not sure if I'll be coming back here anytime soon. I went for happy hour on a Saturday and ordered a couple beers, guac/chips, and calamari. My friend ordered an $8 mojito and it was strong and seriously refreshing. I wasn't expecting much from the bar food but everything was tasty and came out in a very timely manner. The service was great and the staff were polite, funny, and helped create a fun ambiance. Service is really that bad.. Came for happy hour at around 545pm. They started off good, as they created an extra table space for me and a friend. Saw the waiter pretty promptly but we asked for 2 minutes and it took at least another 20 minutes to see him again for our drink order. The sangria was tasty but why wasn't the drink filled to the top? After the first round of drinks, we seriously never saw him again. Missed any more happy hour specials and was disappointed by the wait to even try to order food. No waiter ever came to check on us that we actually went to go find someone to close out. The waiter didn't even seem surprised we were leaving without ordering anything else by around 730pm (over an hour after last seeing anyone!) Super disappointing. They were super busy that day and I'm sure it was really crazy for the workers but it was one of the worst services I've had. read more

Jennifer S. never leads me astray, so I was excited to come back and try Bodega 88 given her enthusiasm. I was still a little wary of the drinks given my previous experience, though Tim M. got a great cucumber and St. Germain cocktail, which was very refreshing. The food was definitely very good and not your average sports bar food, and the dishes were priced pretty well given the quantity, as well. Their two tacos could easily be made into 4 tacos, for example. I liked their chicken taco, but I found the pork shoulder taco a little too fatty. The ropa vieja empanada came with guac and a nice orange sauce, which were great complements. I also really dug the scrumptious pulled pork sandwich and 3 chicken skewers, which came with a pineapple salsa. Even though I was still overwhelmed by all the TV screens, I appreciate the use of wood throughout the restaurant, which gives it less of a sports bar feel and more of a "this is much more than a sports bar" feel. I have been a patron at Bodega for a long time. Have had most of the food and drinks on the menus. Have shared stories with the bartenders, made new friends and have encouraged David to write his story. I was curious when they hyped up their Brunch menu and I was not disappointed. Omelets with an array of choices, a Burrito filled with meat, rice, beans...delicious. Skirt Steak and Eggs with potatoes accompanied with onions and peppers. When I asked how the steak was cooked, Luis replied, "perfect" and he was correct. No matter how long I stay away, when I return, it's like coming home. We were pleasantly surprised with the amazing food!!!! Its was all so fresh and tasty. The bartender, Luis was friendly, attentive and made delicious drinks. He also had an excellent playlist!! They also have 3 big screens so you can watch game while listening to great music! We had the pleasure of meeting David, whose family owned that location for many, many years. Loved this place. I had been wanting to go here for a long time but never had the chance. Happy hour deals here are great. Everything is clean, the service is awesome and fast, and the food is really good. I only tried the empanadas and the wings but they were both super tasty. I love that they have TVs at every booth. They were very helpful to change it to a particular channel, which is nice. The indoor seating area isn't huge but they do offer quite a bit of outdoor seating. Reading everyone else's reviews I think I came here on a bad day... my husband and I started by ordering drinks and the chimichurri fries. The first batch had a hair on them but they quickly came by and brought us a new plate and they were pretty good. The mofonguitos were my main issue. They were really dry and so was the pernil and both were lacking in flavor. The pernil looked (and tasted) like it was microwaved and that's never good. We also ordered the cream cheese and guava empanadas and those were delicious. As far a drinks go we went for happy hour and my husband had a beer (can't go wrong with beer) and I had a Sangria which was ok. I will have to come back and try this place again. read more

Had a horrible experience. Owner's cousin was crazy and she came to our tables and made us comfortable. Not a friendly place to be at. Owner's cousin came to our tables offered us a check for funding for the work we do. She asked me what nationality I was and when I asked why does it matter she said I'm sorry nice meeting you I don't want to talk to you. She instigated our staff and friends. Bodega 88 is a great neighborhood sports bar. The solid bar food options, ample TVs, and lunch/happy hour deals make it one of our favorite go-to spots on the UWS. They're still open for pickup and delivery orders during the coronavirus closures. I ordered some wings for takeout, and they were promptly available within 10 min. The mango mustard wings were a good deal, and tasted delicious! Spots like this are what make this such a special neighborhood. Stumbled upon this spot while looking for somewhere to pregame. I regret leaving this place for Pekarna because pretty much everything was better: the drinks, the food, the atmosphere. My friends and I all got cocktails (all of which were phenomenal) and the chimichurri fries with their calamari. Their calamari was unlike any calamari I've ever tasted, in the best way possible.
