The food was good, reasonably priced, and the service was very quick on a Friday night. The nachos were especially good. I got a regular cheeseburger and got a cheeseburger. Nothing crazy to write home about but I liked it. My wife got mac and cheese and was happy to finally get the kind she was hoping for. THANKSGIVING AT FREDS I had TG with my Mom, stepdad, my kids and wife here. There was a special flat price menu. Which of course included Turkey which I had. These days you can only have one protein selection. They have ham and fish , but I remember a few years ago it was all you can eat mix and match sort of dining. Sign of the times I guess. Despite the overall high praise, I cannot endorse Fred's as a restaurant to seek out, even for Upper West Side standards. Yes, the dog theme all around the restaurant is cute, and I ate some really good nachos here, the overall theme of the restaurant juxtaposes poorly with the neighborhood. It felt pretentious and downright condescending. Look, you want to play the big hits from the 1960's? Go right ahead. But do it tastefully. Some of it felt like I was being bashed over the head with a jukebox, none of it was anything I can reflect fondly on. It seemed like XM's 60's on 6 in a more cliche form. Here is some Sinatra (Frank and his daughter Nancy), here is some Bobby Darin, oh now here is Simon & Garfunkel! What a diverse group! The food besides the nachos lack. Even so, yes the nachos are tasty and are iconically messy, the hole begins to be found at the bottom of the plate, which is symbolic of how my food experience went here. I also ordered the mac n cheese as it is supposed to be the best thing on the menu. Unfortunately I do not see it. The cheese is real tangy and overall the sauce is too rich. My fear is that I would not be able to make it home. I took three bites and stopped eating. For my main entree I went with their chicken sandwich. How underwhelming. The chicken is dry, the cheese is not cooked through, the side salad it comes with is bland, and the bun is raw. Oh, and even though I specifically told them no onions, I found them in my sandwich! What a disgrace. The whole experience left me shaken and stirred to my core. Interestingly enough, Sam Cooke's, "A Change is Gonna Come" was the last song I heard play as I was leaving. Always wanted to check out this place and glad I did today. Beautiful day out in NY there was no wait and we chose to sit outside. Hostess was great and welcoming even offered a menu and explained the menu and all the deals they have. I love the whole theme of doggies, inside it's like with framed photos of all dogs, I'm guessing guests of the bar or neighborhood. My friend got the salmon burger with home made tartar which we enjoyed very much. You get the option or a side salad or fries. I stayed with 2 appetizers the Mexican street corn and chicken quesadillas which were both perfect in size and kept me full for the afternoon. Local Upper West Side brunch spot with good food and charming character. I ordered the Cinnamon Raisin French Toast ($19), which was very tasty. The cinnamon raisin bread was high quality, unique, and not overly sweet even with the toppings. Just a couple minor points for improvement: it was very slightly burned at certain points (but looked a bit more burned than it really was because of the cinnamon), the cinnamon could have been spread out a bit more evenly, and it could have been slightly fluffier. I also tried the Omelette ($19), which was also very good. The egg was cooked the perfect amount, and there was a decent amount of ham, bacon, and cheddar in there (the toppings we chose). There were a couple small areas that were a bit saltier than others though. The place has a distinctly homey atmosphere with dark wooden furniture, and most notably, has a whole bunch of cute dog pics along the walls that were submitted by customers (and maybe employees). One of these dogs is actually the namesake of the restaurant. This collage of dog photos gives the restaurant a unique charming character. There is a pretty large indoor seating area with some outdoor tables as well. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. The service speed was pretty quick. Overall, if you are in the Upper West Side and looking for a nice neighborhood brunch spot, then Fred's would be a very good choice for you - bonus points if you are a fan of dogs. read more

Fred's is one of my favorite spots on Upper West side. It's your low key local bar with fantastic drinks, love their sangria and also has some of the yummiest food that you can enjoy on the bar side of dining side. The restaurant has floor to ceiling photos of dogs bringing so much charm to it. The Mac and cheese is hands down the best I have ever had. There's a reason why I put three stars, I'll explain. We went in and there's absolutely no one there to man where people are going to sit etc so we had to wait a minute and legit roam around till someone showed up. Once we were sat and they had taken our orders checking the menu the menu is extremely pricey for such a place and I've eaten at pretty pricey places before but nothing with those crazy prices that's for sure.. they served my boyfriend the steak, the steak was so dry and terrible (I tried it too to confirm if my bf was being dramatic and I have extremely sensitive taste buds) he was not lying it was dry, tasteless and that was even after he put salt on it to try and taste it, he had to keep covering up the steak with mashed potatoes to actually eat it and we were just so hungry from walking 4 hours today that we just couldn't be bothered to go anywhere else.. my burger was.. ok.. just ok.. not bad obviously but I had to use ketchup to get it to taste much better, I think they grill things here but I can honestly make a better burger and steak at home that my bf would devour in an instant far better than this and the reason why I'm complaining about these stuff cuz these werent no $25 steak no $10 burger these were pricey, the steak was a whopping $33 you'd think after we told the server they would come with some sorta compensation for that bland ruined steak.. but nope none at all, I'm actually ashamed I even bothered tipping anything at all cuz the server did NOT deserve that tip for the way he handled that situation. My last issue is the setting, quite compact okish sure which was nice at first until u look at the pictures, u think oh cute dogs, until u see that one obese Dalmatian (which is utterly disgusting to represent that breed) oh and the shitbulls plastered in with normal dogs, in case the brachy bred illness mutts weren't bad enough. Circling back to the food Their mozzarella sticks the cheese was bland but the outer part was decent but the marinara sauce is what rlly made it a hit, that I can recommend. Circling back to the burgers.. don't get any bacon on it their bacon is drier than the Sahara desert, the driest bacon I've had in years, wasn't even edible. This restaurant needs to try and do better because people will walk with their feet not only that but they will talk, I know I certainly will. read more

We would ask for water or plates, the server would forget and five minutes later we would have to ask someone else. We had such a wonderful and relaxing time here. The staff was so friendly. Our host, waitress and porter were all five star service. The only reason I am giving four stars instead of five is the price for a turkey burger being $19 without even avocado/bacon is a little aggressive. I know with the pandemic it's hard on restaurants but this is a lot for a turkey burger and I wish I could make it a regular spot but with that price tag it will have to be an on occasion item. I felt safe sitting outside and the staff was extremely particular about the regulations and very alert about this. Needless to say, the menu selection was great. I finally got my turkey burger (you have no idea how difficult it is to find here on the UWS and if a restaurant does have it, it's frozen and not good). Bun nicely toasted, cheddar perfectly melted. The macaroni and cheese was filled with gooey cheese, pieces of bacon, with a very crispy top. Lacking a bit of pepper but our very kind porter brought us everything I could ever need with such positive and kind energy. Beer and drink selection was impressive from nice winter cocktails to draft beers. I enjoyed the Porter. The last bit that shocked us was the Belgium chocolate cake with coconut. Not only was the presentation gorgeous but every bite was absolutely divine. Our attentive, down to earth and sweet waitress told us it was made by Elizabeth! Instead, I received what can only be described as a gas station salad with a cheap spinach wrap on the side - the kinds that you can get from the supermarket in a pack of six for $3.99. The fun of eating fajitas is to be able to custom-make individual tacos, each with whatever proportions of chicken, veggies, and sauces that your heart desires. But how was I supposed to make those with my dollar-store spinach wrap and ungodly amount of iceberg lettuce? As I watched my friends devour their roast chicken beside me, I was overcome with envy and regret. Hungry, tired, and with few alternative options, I tried my best to rip the stale spinach tortilla into small tacos to construct my custom fajitas. But as the picture will indicate, it ended up being a salad with a side of tortilla. Nasty. To make matters worse, our scantily clad waitress hovered over us, and all of the tables seated around us, repeating every four minutes, almost robotically, "how are we doing FRANDS?" Great Conversations can be had at Fred's! We went there for a late dinner during March Madness and there was a small, friendly crowd at the bar watching games and having drinks, while we ate in pretty quiet dining room. It was raining heavily the night we were there so I think many people were staying home. The food was good. I had a chicken avocado sandwich of some sort and my spouse had the salmon burger which she enjoyed. First off, I love all the dogs on the walls which my primary reason for coming. I love animals. The service was okay. He was fairly friendly, forgot our order so he had to come back again to ask what we wanted, finished his shift half way through our lunch but didn't even let us know we were changing servers. The average person probably could care less but as someone who worked in restaurants for 10+ years, I was always told to let the guests know. I ordered a Bloody Mary which was okay. I finished it but it was VERY heavy on the hot sauce. It was suppose to be 2 for 1 Blood Mary's, Mimosas or Bellini's but no one ever asked about a 2nd one, just gave us the check once we were done. My husband ordered a Cheeseburger which he enjoyed. I ordered the Veggie Quesadillas which I thought were decent. They were HUGE though... they were $22 which is very expensive but again, you did get a lot of filling for your money. The owner or manager at Fred's is the best! This man was so accommodating to the large party that was my family and friends. He also engaged us without becoming overbearing. It's a pity his staff wasn't the same. They were brusque and even seemed like they didn't want to do the job they were there to do. Thank God for this wonderful manager who made up for their poor behavior. We dined outdoors and I had the juciest of medium lamb burger. My family had various other dishes including pasta and salads. One salad was obviously not on the fresh side. The leaves were wilting. Some parts looked dried and when we compared it to others on the table the difference was night and day. My aunt promptly sent it back. She didn't want anything else because she was afraid her action would cause staff to treat her/us with even more disdain. She just picked off of our salads Haha. Sad because she said this was one of her favourite restaurants. My other issue is I have no pics of our other delicious meals because pics at table is a NO NO with mi familia. At home I can usually sneak some in but it was too had to accomplish here. I managed to get a few shots on on my way to the toilet though. Take that family! In. Your. Faces! Hahaha. I had a personal situation. It's an animal friendly environment (didn't know this prior) and I was super scared peeing and having dogs and cats look at me. Yeah yeah pictures but my phobia and I had a bit of a time in that toilet trying to close my eyes and get my business done at the same time. Hahahaha! 4 Stars for fabulous food in a unique environment that will either feel nostalgic/cozy or a teensy bit claustrophobic! We were able to get our names on the list for brunch one weekend morning and then found a spot at the bar while we waited. Just know that there will be a wait for brunch, but it's worth it! The restaurant is verrrrry compact and i won't lie, I struggled, feeling pretty claustrophobic given how close everyone is sitting. Luckily, the food made me forget my worries! But first- I ordered a whiskey drink at the bar while we waited and I got the feeling that their food is the star (maybe it's not the best for a cocktail). No biggie! I was really there for the breakfast goodies! We ordered and got the corn bread and strawberry butter they put on every table. I could have eaten just this and been more than happy. That butter is a revelation! I then shared a salty and a sweet dish with my partner because we just couldn't make a decision. The Cinnamon Raisin French toast was thick and hearty. I'm not always a raisin fan, but it was perfect for this dish. I'd just ask for some extra syrup! The Artichoke Omelet was somewhat basic, but not in a bad way. Just what I expected and wanted. I was certainly not disappointed! Overall, lovely service, a great meal, and smiling dogs over every inch of the walls. This place always looks packed and poppin' whenever we walk by. I wanted to like Fred's! It seems like it has such a homey, neighborhood diner vibe, but the prices are way too overpriced for the quality and atmosphere. Buttermilk Fried Chicken - 3.5/5 - Dry, just as another reviewer stated, but not too terribly. The chicken was fried and crunchy but at the cost of the moisture of the chicken. Little to no flavor. The smokey honey mustard saved the dish. Mashed potatoes were okay, garlicky but kind of chunky. I think it's just preference, but they weren't my favorite. Moms Meatloaf - 3/5 - The veggies were okay/good. Same mash as with the fried chicken. Texture was a little too mushy for our taste and flavor was underwhelming. Also, my soda was flat. But I understand that this is probably a hit or miss... Overall, the servers were nice! The food was OKAY. It was not terrrible. But paying more than $20 for mediocre dishes at a restaurant that gives off a cozy feel? Idk. There are plenty of other eateries in NY that will gladly charge you just as much with better quality. That being said, I may be willing to give this spot another try. Maybe for their appetizers only or their acclaimed famous mac n cheese.
