I don't even know what this meal was. But I paid $37 for a meal the staff clearly saw I didn't eat. The lentil soup had no flavor or seasoning, where is the cheese or butter, it's supposed to be a Jambon De Paris- French ham, butter bread and gruyere cheese sandwich. Also zero flavor. A very relaxing, chill, wine bar in the UES. I love the selection of wine because if you want to sit and not have to pay a lot of money this is the place for you! We went to Bread N Wine on a early Saturday afternoon, we were greeted and seated by the servers who were attentive. The food was okay - the bread was really soft and fresh. My partner got the French Lentil Soup, Spinach and Tomato Egg Bake and I got the French onion soup, egg omelette with spicy tomato avocado and onions. I wasn't happy with my omelette because the spicy just meant it was covered in hot sauce within. For beverages, we got chai lattes (we later found out it wasn't tea based but rather coffee) and we had the option of oat milk, almond milk or regular milk. In terms of our overall experience we felt that everything was charming in the beginning but by the end too many things were steering the experience south; one of the worst was when we were accused of using counterfeit money to pay for the tip. There was no special marker used to prove that the money was counterfeit or technology to back up this claim. That experience alone left a bad taste in our mouth as we left embarrassed by that claim, kind of shook from that, we still added the tip to our credit card - 18%. As we walked out and talked about how weird that was, the owner of the business next door overheard us and asked to see the $20 bill - he showed us that our money was real and validated what we knew, that the money wasn't counterfeit. When we went back into Bread N Wine to discuss this there was no apology, just "well, it felt that way", shrug. It left a terrible feeling. We would not go back after that, this is not how you treat customers from start to finish, hence the 2 star review. read more

We love this place. I would give it 5 stars but it is a sandwich shop with a cute vibe, so hard to give any place in that category 5 stars. With that being said, the sandwiches are delicious and they have a bunch of other food options that are very good as well. The staff is always friendly and attentive and make you feel welcome. Some of the slowest, most inept service that I've ever encountered. There were few patrons either inside or outside, but we waited ... and waited .... and waited, for the menus, for the food, for the dessert. Our water was never refilled and the bus boy took all the napkins and cutlery off the table before we were finished, leaving an empty wine glass and a container of sauce that shouldn't have been there. The food however, was excellent. I had Tuna Nicoise Salad, berry tart for dessert, with chai tea; my friend ate Asian Vegetable and Rice Plate and cheesecake. I drank a rose sparkling wine. No complaints there. Very interesting menu. Food was OK, but certainly not spectacular. For example, the lukewarm French onion soup, usually a signature French item, had a single thin slice of cheese half-melted to the soggy crouton beneath it, rather than what is standard in French restaurants in covering the crock with a good portion of cheese altogether, so that it melts over the soup. The meal took forever to get to the table, which is likely indicative of a disconnect between the kitchen and wait staff, which is more concerned with taking new orders than in attending to customers awaiting their meal. The wines were very good, priced at $15 and up per glass. My main complaint was the disappearance of the entire wait staff of two for long periods of time from the dining room. We had to flag staff down for every stage and service, such as it is. There was also visible surprise on our waiter's face when I asked him for menus vs. scanning the QR code on the table, as well as his reluctance to take a physical credit card vs. our paying for our meal online. This place consistently puts the onus on the customer to make their meal come together. At least we didn't have to cook our food. Choose somewhere else. Somewhere that cares. read more

We've enjoyed mostly good experiences here, so we don't want to underrate them. But there are some issues: most recently we ordered the Lentil Soup and the French Onion Soup, and both arrived lukewarm at best. Not good. Re-heating didn't help much. The Lentil Soup's ingredients were surprisingly mushy, and the temperature didn't help. We had good service for most of our meals, but it can be hard to track down a server to get the bill. They make some very tasty sandwiches: the Cuban is really yummy, nicely spiced and meaty. We won't stop going back, but our visits have raised a few concerns. We wanted the rose but were given the blood orange, we didn't realize until after or we would have sent it back. The flavor was very mute, with a hint of mint but mostly green tea. For brunch I ordered the French onion soup, my friend ordered the Persian soup, and we split the Cuban sandwich. I was very pleased with my French onion soup, the flavor was amazing with the right amount of kick, not overwhelming with the amount of onion, with the right mix of cheese and bread. The Persian soup across the table from me had some delicious smells eminating from the bowl. She really enjoyed it. The Cuban was also delicious with the right amount of meat, and some really fresh pickles. It was the perfect brunch food. Another party was seated near us, and clearly the Persian soup and Cuban sandwich is very popular as 3/4 people in the group ordered it! My boyfriend and I stayed to work an afternoon here and it was good for the most part - not too noisy and WiFi easy to obtain. However, the AC was not working properly and there wasn't much help to fix it, it appeared. Nevertheless, OK food and good ambiance to chill for a few hours either by yourself or with others. I went with the soup/salad deal and ordered the lentil soup and beet goat cheese salad. The lentil soup was good but had a curry smell/taste to it that wasn't my favorite. The beet salad was more of an arugula salad than a beet salad. I hate when restaurants do that. If it is an arugula salad name it that and if it is a beet salad put more beets on it! Overall, the meal wasn't bad but nothing makes me really want to come back. They had different stuff on the menu so maybe I would have had better luck with other items. It had a good combination of flavors including the freshness of the cilantro, and the generous slathering of mustard was not overpowering. My friend had the French onion soup, which was great and not too salty as french onion soup can often be. She also had a Cuban half sandwich which was decent, if not a bit soggy. For dessert, we split the vanilla bean creme brulee which was okay. The sugar tasted too burnt, and the custard underneath was a bit more firm and gelatinous than creamy and had no vanilla flavor. It's $12 and I have done half a sandwich and the French onion soup. The service is good and complimentary water is provided. The heating is nice and the ambiance feels cozy somehow! I love the flavor of the soup and the large piece of bread soaked in cheese that's at the top of it. I will say the 2nd time I had the soup it was not filled completely to the brim, but that's minor! The sandwiches are typically on ciabatta bread although there's other options too! I really like the sandwich selection, especially in terms of meat and cheese options. I loved the turkey sandwich I had as the arugula, cranberries, and aioli gave it a delicious, impactful taste. For the leg of lamb sandwich, it was very juicy almost like an "au jus" sandwich. The price point is nice as I think the half sandwich portion is quite generous and a lot of meat is provided in the sandwiches. Also, you can order JUST a half sandwich which is only $6.
