First of all, those queuing around the corner at Cafe Maude, stop standing in line and walk around the corner for better food, better service and a superb craft beer and cocktails selection. This tiny bar has some the very best casual food in Manhattan. The choice is wide, not just the usual fare. Even the common bar items such as wings are done better, smoked, perfect size. Of course the burger is killer, the tots epic and the winter quinoa salad a cure for people like me who like salads but rarely order them. I come here about once per week and last week I had the steak and eggs with a side of bacon. See what you think.... Staff are awesome, it's cool brightly lit space. We all split the Chicken Tenders ($15) buttermilk brined, house-made fried chicken tenders, served with a biscuit, honey butter and bbq sauce and the Tater Tots ($8) large, hand-rolled shredded seasoned potatoes, fried and served with spicy ranch & ketchup. These were more like big fried hashbrown balls than the traditional tater tots everyone knows and loves, so not sure why they call them that. I'm actually surprised that I haven't reviewed Bondurants before. This is a great spot on the UES. All of my visits have been with my UES running crew as the first few visits were after our Shack Track and Field run. More recently visits have included running related celebrations for our marathoners, and even running friend birthdays. They have a great beer selection and always have sours on the menu which I appreciate. Their food menu is also really good. We tend to get things to share, some favorites have been the quesadilla and the chicken strips (which comes with one of their tasty biscuits). Others have ordered the burger and mac and cheese as well which they have enjoyed. The bartenders are always super nice. If you're not sure if you like a beer on tap, they'll let you taste it. I know if I lived in the neighborhood I would definitely frequent this place a lot but until then, it's a running related hang spot for me. read more

I came here w/ M, B & my brother-in-law for after-dinner drinks for the 1st time, about a month ago. We sat at the bar, which was very sticky & dirty. It was later in the evening & not totally packed w/ a younger bunch of hipsters. We had 1 round of drinks & they were all overpriced & mediocre at best. And thereafter, we were made to feel unwelcome & discriminated here...not sure if it was because I was disabled and also because B & I are Asian. All I know is that the RUDE (& possibly racist) bartender who kept staring at me & B the whole time in a creepy way - after we were served ONE cocktail by another bartender - told my brother-in-law that they (Bondurants) would no longer serve me - "your woman friend sitting in the [walker] chair because [I] had said [I] was drunk." Isn't that the purpose of going to a bar...to get drunk??!! I could understand if I was wasted & incoherent but I was only on my 1st drink & simply stated I was drunk (as often people just say at a bar)! Never coming back...this is definitely on our BOYCOTT list! Don't waste your time or money here! There are many other nicer & cleaner bars on the UES w/ wonderful service + cocktails that we'd rather go to (eg. NR, The Penrose, Caledonia, 2nd flr bar @ the Essen, etc). read more

I stumbled upon this bar a few months ago and have been back several times since because it is simply that amazing! Their service is always attentive since day one! We originally got a wobbly table and without even having to ask or speak up the waitress was on it to balance the table to ensure we had the best experience. I've also been on a look out for good wings (boneless wings) since moving to the UES and let me tell you, these are it! I always order their tossed tendies because the chicken is great, the flavor is amazing, and their ranch is actually good! Absolutely TERRIBLE experience. The only waitress working the entire restaurant was unprofessional, rude, and inconsiderate. She was just completely unaware of etiquette when serving us, the paying customers, in the restaurant. She handed me a ginger ale that she said most likely is not good and yet told me to still try it and YES, it tasted bad. Why would you harm a customer like that? She handed me a coca cola instead after I requested and she put her entire sleeve on my food that I was mid-eating in order to put it on the other side of the far end of the table. Lastly, we asked for the check and she DID NOT even show us the receipt itself - she just put the check device in our face and inserted our cards in since we were splitting the bill between 2 people, and after I put my tip in, she just IMMEDIATELY disappears and turns the other way before I can even ask for a receipt. Horrendous service - I am STILL appalled that paying customers would be treated this way. I am most definitely double checking my bill to ensure I did not get overcharged because I would not be surprised since she did not allow us to even SEE our receipt. Very chill and affordable bar/restaurant to visit. My friend raved about this place so I decided to check it out with her. We went on a weekend night and we were seated quickly. It was not packed at all. The waiter was really quick with helping us and everything came out in good time. We only ordered sodas to drink. For my meal I tried the Grilled Chicken Sandwich. It was sooo delicious! All of the ingredients came together perfectly and there was a good amount of each. I'm happy it came in a panini instead of regular bread too. Bondurants is a little bit of an unexpected gem. It's a bar and kindof nondescript from the outside. But its a really nice bar once you get inside. It's got a cool vibe. The decor is really lovely - exposed brick, big windows - kindof industrial, but still warm. Staff was ok. They were busy with the bar crowd, but that's ok. And its really realllly loud inside. I wasn't exactly screaming at my table mates but with the crowd and the loud music it was hard to hear at moments. Ooo and the food coming out of the kitchen is delish! We visited on a recent Saturday around 1pm. The bar was packed but most of the tables (mostly hightops) around the perimeter were open. You have to order at the bar, which isn't a bit deal, but with so many people already crowded around it - ordering wasn't easy. A few of the items I tried: IPA Fries ($6) are tasty! Placed in a IPA brine and then dusted with salt/pepper and herbs - I liked them. If you're worried about them tasting like beer - don't. They do not taste like beer. Homemade Tater Tots ($7) were good but really crumbly. I picked one up and it fell apart. Picked up another and it too fell apart. Wondering if it needs something else to bind them... texture was a bit off for me too. If you're torn between the fries and the tots I suggest the fries. Fried Chicken Tenders ($10) - a plate of five or six nice sized, definitely not frozen tenders. Just the right amount of crisp on the outside, juicy inside. Quality tenders! The bbq and the biscuit that come w/ are delish too. I took home half my order and asked for extra bbq sauce. Yum. Also got to try the Mac & Cheese ($11) - anytime gruyere is used in mac I'm game. This one did not disappoint. Of course there were drinks. Bondurants has a "constantly rotating draft list" according to their site -- and its a good well rounded list. Usually I would give this place 4 stars but here we go: Came here for date night and walking in and was pleased with the dimly lit aesthetic and overall feel of the bar. Well that quickly changed when we made a simple request to have one of the two tvs switched to the Mavs/OKC game. Knowing the hockey playoffs were happening simultaneously I wasn't expecting both tvs to be changed by any means but the bar was fairly empty and the patrons watching hockey were sitting on one side and watching only one of two tvs. When we made the request the bartender said no, only hockey will stay on and was pretty short about it. I think he realized he was being a bit of a tool and offered to turn on a small tv to show the game which was better than nothing. My biggest issue is within a matter of 10mins of asking to watch the game on one of the larger tvs for our initial ask, that same tool bartender turned off both tvs and was just hanging out on the side. Well.... I went to this place last week and there was a male bartender. Very nice and quick seeing the place was not crowded. The drinks were good so decided to go back this week for food and drinks. What a mistake!!!!! There was one bartender a female its was not busy and she could not be bothered to inform people of anything. There was another couple that came in that literally had to help themselves. The food was good as well as the drinks but I won't be returning to a place where I feel like a bother. Lots of things to like about this bar. I could only stop in briefly since I had a train to catch, but I am glad I made the quick stop. I immediately noticed the wide open windows, great for a breezy summer day, and all the baby carriages inside. Seriously, this bar clearly attracts young families who want to get their drink on. There are definitely some regular hitters but also some more unique beers. Their menus contain some helpful tasting notes, but I also noticed that the bartender was helping quite a few people decide, including a taste or two. Came here on a whim because I was in the area and I'm so glad I did! The ambiance is very simple but inviting, reminded me a lot of pubs in England. This bar is hidden right off 2nd Ave on 85th St on the North side of the street. I went in with a group of people on a Sunday around 7:30 pm. The bar is round with the right amount of seating, and also, it has surrounding tables. I didn't get anything to eat here, but the bar menu looked like the usual American menu and reasonably priced. There's a good amount of beers on tap ranging from $7-10. There's also a cocktail menu ranging from $11-13. It's the perfect bar to go to if you want to be able to talk at an average volume, have a drink before or after dinner, or after work. Some friends and I came here for dinner recently. This place is more a bar than restaurant, so it was dark and very loud so we had trouble hearing one another, but I guess that is to be expected of a bar. Service was just okay. We were able to seat ourselves right away but had to order at the bar and after that, they served us the food. Also at the bar, we asked for water, which took quite awhile to arrive at our table... It took so long that we had to physically go to the bar to ask for it again. Also, the food menu was not that extensive so we we had limited options. At least the food was pretty good though. We ordered homemade tater tots, which were OUT OF THIS WORLD amazing! They were the BEST tater tots I have ever had. The tater tots were delightfully delicious fried balls that were extra crispy, coupled with fluffy potato interior and just mouthwatering morsels of yumminess! I definitely could have eaten every single one of them, but I only had 2 because sharing is caring, ya know. For my entree, I ordered the hamburger with Muenster cheese, onions, lettuce, tomato and a fried egg on top. This burger was massive! The only thing it was missing was bacon (might have been overkill but anyone who really knows me, knows that I love many toppings on anything I eat). It took me awhile to cut the burger and figure out how to eat it... It was quite messy but very tasty. The meat was juicy, well flavored and seasoned; the cheese was wonderfully melty; the vegetables were crisp and crisp and the egg was a nice addition. All the ingredients tied together well and made for a very satisfying and filling meal. This is my new favorite brunch place. We've seen it as we browse Yelp for brunch every weekend, and I'm so glad that we finally made it here. There was no wait on a Saturday morning, the space is lovely, the menu is interesting and the food is phenomenal. I'm still confused by how tipping works at places like this; you order and pay at the bar and there's no waiter service, but someone does come to bring us food. o_O Anyway, onto the food: + smash-tot skillet: I was initially surprised by the portion - it's the tiniest cast iron skillet possible - but this blew me away. The homemade tater tots smothered in cheese melded with the pork belly and egg beautifully. The toast was prebuttered and addictive, and the salad was a great complement to the heavy dish. + austin breakfast tacos with pork belly (3): This green sauce is soooo good. It was a bit spicy, but we both loved it and scraped the bottom of our little container to get as much as possible. The breakfast taco was done perfectly, and everything came together really well flavor and texture-wise. The eggs were light and fluffy, the proportions were great and I'm currently getting hungry thinking about how good they were. :( Overall, I was really impressed by how they elevated simple brunch foods to such heights, and I can't wait to come back. Cocktails are strong and good...Smuggler's Run did not disappoint! We also tried the fried pickles, wings & pulled pork. Both the pulled pork and wings were great...I would pass on the fried pickles next time. They were a little too doughy and the batter had a sweet taste to it. I'm glad this place is around the corner from me, and look forward to going back to try some other the other cocktails. Came here for my sister's surprise party. There were about 25 of us and the staff was super accommodating, considering we took up a large part of the space and were kind of in their way the whole night... they had a table reserved for us right near the kitchen and bathroom so our large crowd was usually blocking somebody... The staff were friendly and if they minded us being there, they certainly didn't let us know. The selection of unique craft beers is pretty decent - I had the chocolate stout and fell in love. The alcohol content on that one was pretty high, so even better! Their cocktail list is a lot shorter, but they do have a pretty lengthy list of whiskeys. The food is pretty tasty, although my dad's chicken sandwich arrived with lots of bones in it... After having a pretty large tab, the bartender ended up giving us a few of our drinks on the house. Yes I was chasing a photo of biscuits and gravy from three years ago. Of course it's not on the menu anymore. I should have called and asked. The Cask also is not working or pouring on a weekend but who cares. The service is pleasant and the food is delicious. We had homemade tots in a skillet with a perfect egg. Bits of bacon (not pork belly) I know bacon is pork belly but ordering bacon and ordering pork belly should have some differences. Anyway I still enjoyed it. The buttermilk chicken tenders were the real star of our first meal of the day. The deviled eggs also nice (never met a deviled egg I didn't like) they add a nice touch to it. Attached is a before and after. Bloody Mary had a bit to much horseradish but not that much to send back. It was fine. If biscuits and gravy find their way back on the menu I'll be back.
