I had the basket with fish, shrimp and oysters, as well as a cup of chowder waiting for the ferry to Friday Harbor. Parking was easy(private lot behind the restaurant) and staff was very pleasant. Chowder was good, but not up to my WA standard of Ivar's or Emmett Watson's Oyster Bar, not creamy tasting enough, little too salty....but very flavorful....even so, a bit of hot sauce was required. Unfortunately, cannot say same for fish.....it was fairly tasteless, and the fries were adequate, but not very yummy....there were a lot of them though. I lived in Anacortes for years....and Bobs Chowder was one of my kids' favorite places to go. This week I had the chance to be back in Anacortes for business, so I decided to head to Bobs. The first night, the chowder was watery and tasted very bland. I also had 3 piece cod and chips. I couldn't finish it.it was gross. Way over battered (bread batter). Since I've loved Bob in the past,I decided to try it again as maybe the previous night was just a rough night at the restaurant? Nope. Inedible! Chowder was gross and the fish n chips was horrible. We've been coming to Bob's Chowder Bar for several years - any time our travels bring us to this part of Washington. Today's visit will be our last. Service was terribly slow - it took 50 minutes to get a cup of chowder with a side salad and my husband's plate of basically all things fried (fried seafood sampler with onion rings). The salad which was mostly spinach, had gone bad. I had to pick out slimy black blobs of spoiled spinach leaves hidden under the dressing. We brought this to the attention of our waitress, who offered to make another salad for me. Sadly, this one was the same as the first. My chowder was over salted and filled with bacon bits vs. clams. It had no clam flavor, instead tasting like a potato/bacon soup. My husband's meal was completely overcooked...clam strips were tough, fried cod was dry, onion rings were almost burnt looking, and the fried oysters were on the verge of being undercooked due to their size. When our bill arrived, no adjustment had been made for the salad. We asked to be credited for the salad and only pay for the cup of soup I ordered. Our waitress talked to whoever is running this place, only to return to say that because she made me a second salad and I ate part of it, the manager wanted us to pay full price. We again stated that we felt we shouldn't pay for spoiled food. She went back once more, returning saying the manager would not credit us. He wouldn't even come out to address the situation himself - instead, making our sweet waitress the messenger. read more

I have been fortunate to visit Bob's every time I have been in Anacortes. Mostly on trips with kids for whatever reason, but this time I could share it with adult family. They were great as ever. Yeah, it's all fried and unhealthy, but every now and then you want a perfectly made oyster/clam/squid/fish basket with fries. Whenever I forget how amazing oysters can be, this joint slaps me up side of the head for shellfish recalibration. We stopped here yesterday afternoon/early evening after reading reviews online. We were seriously disappointed. The best part of our meal was the Rock Crab dip. My husband ordered the 3 piece Halibut and the coating is definitely different. Not in a good way. I had the 2 piece cod. Wasn't bad. Wasn't exceptional either. Came up to the area for Father's Day weekend to whale watch and camp. Found this place nearby and wanted to try some local chowder. We absolutely loved it! The staff is friendly and the food was great. Our two boys had kids meals and received saltwater taffy and a seashell with their order, they thought that was awesome and we found it to be very unique. I come here nearly once a week for their delicious food and great service! I especially love their fried pickles and salmon wraps! I also really enjoy the new drink menu, the pineapple sage margarita is delightful! I think what I enjoy the most is how friendly and welcoming the staff have been. It was 50/50 with the friendliness of the staff, some were really friendly and helpful in deciding what to order and giving details and such, but there was two of them (an older lady and short scrawny man) that were just so rude we all got up and left!!! As for the cleanliness and overall decor was so/so. Wasn't impressed with their sandwiches and their fries were soggy/mushy. But there was a very kind older gentleman that was giving out fresh cook samples of the salmon that was very good, should have gone with that. Looking to get an early dinner while in Anacortes, we decided to give this place a try. We had the rock crab tots, fried avocado, oyster burger, and the clamdigger. Everything was great, the rock crab tots were are favorite. One of the sauces that came with the fried avocado was excellent, a cilantro lime sauce. Customer service was top notch. Everybody was friendly. Everybody made sure we were taken car if, not just our server. Even Bob himself came around to introduce himself and thanked every customer for coming in. It's great and friendly service like this that make me return to places. We'll try other menu items the next time we roll through Anacortes. Thanks Bob and crew. read more

The fish tacos were outstanding! The house salad was extra good. Not sure what they did to it but it was a fine tasting salad. My husband had the fish and chips and he said the fish was overdone. I had what they called the Clamdigger which is a sourdough bread bowl in which they put fried clam strips, fill with their chowder and then top with even more clam strips. I don't like the taste of fish. I do love Bob's fish and chips and gladly drive an hour to eat here. Very generous portions. Fish is thick, perfectly cooked, breading is light, fries are crispy. The coleslaw has some magical sweet and citrus flavor, delicious. The chowder is thick, tasty and rich. Last visit I met and talked with Bob and his wife and was pleased to find them friendly and accommodating. After a long day of fishing, my family and I decided to visit this restaurant because we heard from locals that you can't go wrong with the seafood here. They had great service and we got to sit outside and soak up the sun. We ordered an assortment plate which included prawns, fish, and clams with a side of fries. Went here for the first time for dinner. The restaurant is very clean, all protective measures are practiced and staff were very friendly and professional - great customer service! The food - husband ordered salmon and chips with the clam chowder and I ordered fish and chips (Alaskan cod) with salad and their Lemon Love dressing (delicious!!). The servings of fish especially the cod are big and the batter is light. I ordered the two piece and that was a lot for me probably because I had a side of chowder too which was really good. My husband enjoyed his salmon and chips as well. I need to talk more about the Lemon dressing. If you are a lemon fanatic like me, you will love this dressing. The dressing was lemony, creamy and a hint of sweet. While everything we had was good the highlight of my meal was that dressing. Our server recommended it to me and I am so glad she did. Second time back and I'm completely satisfied with my food. Upon ordering the prawn basket, I enjoyed my food with an outside street-view. Even so, the prawn basket was $15 and I thought that was a bit pricey, considering it was just 6 shrimps with a side of fries. I also asked for a cup of water and was given the smallest cup possible. I understand restaurant policy but the machine is right next to the register. That said, there's no possibility for anyone to lie about wanting water and cheating them for a soda, so there should be bigger cups. I also ordered the key-lime pie and it was SO GOOD. The service here is great and it's really the only reason I came back for a second time. But now that I really enjoyed the food this time, service won't be the only reason I come here again. We have been coming here for years and food is great, however recently the fish portions were flat pieces which are good, but they used to be large even rectangles like large matchsticks, which cook evenly and very moist. This is main reason we get fish and chips, because it's obvious Bob is smarter than most by keeping each fish portion exactly same size. We hope he goes back to the large matchstick size which is great size of fish and breading. read more

My husband ordered the Clam Chowder and it was fine but his cod fish and chips included two ridiculously small pieces of over cooked fish. I ordered the grilled Atlantic Salmon. Max capacity is 48 so keep that in mind. We stopped in for a late lunch on a Thursday in winter for a cup of chowder. We've never been here before - the waiter was patient as he described the local beers on tap (great selection btw). My kids enjoyed a clam diggers bowl, fried avocado, crab tots, fried calamari and I had a bowl of chowder with a biscuit. It was a great place to unwind and slow down. There was only the one server but he was moving with purpose even though they weren't busy (one other table). Great little "Chowder Bar". Had the the Clamdigger and it was delicious! Atmosphere is casual, and includes an option to eat outside. The menu options are somewhat limited, and too much is deep fried, but this place is pretty much a fast food style restaurant, so the food's pretty good taken in that context. I'm not a big fan of deep fried foods, but I will have to complement them on the fact that the clam strips on my Clamdiggers were cooked perfectly. read more

I have been craving lemon love for a year since I moved. Working in Anacortes I had to stop in and alongside the awesome updates and changes was the same favorite big red sandwich I love so much. Where do I start? My god this place was just absolutely magnificent. Now I have to say - as a bob myself i am always a bit biased towards an establishment called bobs (or franks but that's just another great name). But bobs chowder blew my tots off. My wife and I got the surf and turf (soup and salad). I went for the salmon chowder because the last time I was in the Pacific Northwest (PNW if you're a local) I had salmon chowder in a little joint and I sat there and an elderly fisherman enjoyed a few Budweiser's with me. I got the salmon chowder with a house salad and cilantro lime dressing and it was awesome. The mrs got New England clam chowder with a lemon dressing and it was thicker than chowder I've had before but again it was awesome. This place is a secret gem. We ordered their special, Rockfish with mango-cilantro-onion sauce--the whole fish brined and braised to perfection. It was so good that it reminded me of seafood served up in seaside restaurants in Mexico where the fish is fresh-caught and delectable. Only this was fresh from Alaska. Utterly memorable. Served with salad and red potatoes. The restaurant is unpretentious and has the feel of old style seafood restaurants. We dined in the back off the main drag, where they've set up cute picnic tables under red beach umbrellas. The staff wore masks. (Thank you for being thoughtful!) I think Bob's used to be a ghost kitchen/ take-out fish place that grew into a full service restaurant. They're gonna get even better, I'm sure. Move over, Anthony's. read more

Dinner for three with an app and three cups of chowder: $105. Two medium plates of "fish and chips", heavy breading with absolutely ZERO seasoning and my son said his halibut tasted greasy. Salmon dinner with very fishy taste (why when you're next to the coast???) and slightly underdone (I suspect it was frozen). Salad was covered with tons of Parmesan cheese and the tomatoes were chewy. Red potatoes were fried to very very done. Fried pickles were okayish.
