BBQ is right up there at the top of the list, perhaps neck and neck with Italian-American red-sauce joints. Why? So many people have a laser focused opinions on the cuisine, and if an operator dares to diverge from that vision by an iota, the place gets torched in the reviews. Read these words: Cornell Chicken Let me tell you what Cornell Chicken isn't. It's not Texas BBQ. It's not Carolina BBQ. It's not Memphis, or St. Louis, or Kansas City, or any of the other glorious BBQ traditions that grace this very very lucky nation. It's its own thing. And it does not need any sauce. Now, how can a casual observer tell what type of roadside BBQ joint they've pulled up to for food if it's not explicitly written out someplace? Take a look at the cooking real estate. What type of gear do they have? How much space is dedicated to each thing. At Bob's, the Cornell Chicken grill is massive, as it should be. It is front and center. And on the menu, chicken comes first. That's your next big clue. Do they offer other things? Sure. If you are local and come all the time, at some point you may want to mix it up. I hear some people cannot live on chicken alone. Me? I just want all the chicken. Any bite of anything else on the plate is taking up stomach real estate that could be reserved for more chicken. And the Cornell Chicken at Bob's is delicious! Truth be told, I have had better in Oneonta. But this is right up there. The breast was a little dry, which can happen. Next time, instead of getting a half chicken a la carte, I'll opt for two dark meat quarters a la cart. Or maybe even expand the order to get a 1/4 pound of something else. But I tore that bird apart like an animal and cleaned its bones clear of all its succulent meat. And I was deeply grateful for the large handwashing sink to scrub most of the chicken fat off my shiny mitts. It was hard to eat while listening to other folks in the picnic pavilion dismiss the food for being something different than what they were expecting. However, for whatever reason Cornell Chicken just does not enjoy the fame and popularity of other regional BBQ styles despite its history, deep regional love, and sheer deliciousness. Side of the road seasonal stand that is not to be skipped. Stopped for 4th of July Lunch and was not disappointed. Got a 1/4 BBQ chicken, ear of corn, mac salad, potato roll w butter all for 13.50. Thr chicken didn't have BBQ sauce but was perfectly seasoned and moist with no dryness. Some places would have you settle for the chicken touching a BBQ but this place understands that flavor matters. The whole ear of corn was fresh and went great with or without the butter. My husband and I have lived in this area for over 25 years. Bob's BBQ was the place to go on the weekends for food. Best around and met many that came from miles away just to get their goods. Their service continues to be great , but something has happened to the food!!! Did the place change hands??? Chicken is very dry not juicy and tasty as it once was. Ribs are not at all what they were . Way over done to the point of not edible at times. For the salads, NO flavor loaded with mayonnaise and if you get it on Sunday it's almost soupy!!! Baked beans are like they opened up a can of Campbells pork and beans and warmed them up. I can do that! Salt potatoes can be waterlogged and way to large for salt potatoes. I swear they warm up left overs and serve again. That just disgusting thinking that's what they have done.We have been there 5 times this season and may probably not return. Not worth the price that has increased none the less and serving sizes have decreased. Good luck making a profit this season. read more

Fantastic place located on the side of a country road. The waft of bbq smell greets you as you order on the side. The food is fantastic. I had the 1/2 chicken, ribs, and sides. The crispiness of the skin from the chicken was outstanding and the flavor was intoxicating. I had the salt potatoes which were fantastic and the cole slaw was outstanding. Like many a politician, my views have evolved. I was perhaps judging it in a pointless metric of Not Being Brooks. The setting was idyllic before; for an urban dweller dealing with the nightmare of 2020, it is perfection. There's a vast assortment of spacious tables. A few years ago when I griped about the salt potatoes, I guess wasn't much of a locavore. In other words, order the corn when there's corn growing across the street. It was outstanding. The macaroni salad remains zingy. I wouldn't know if the pulled pork merits the Yelp attention but you must order chicken here. The skin is addictive, the interior is surprisingly tender. Compared with some other joints in the upstate NY chicken genre, vinegar is mandatory for all, but this one relies more on smoke and less on sauce than some others. read more

WOW, this place is legendary! Gotta be honest, I'm not a huge fan of bbq, I never crave it. This place is a hike from my house but it's worth the drive (37 miles). It's on a main road and always packed (the line goes quickly). I got the brisket w/coleslaw and potato salad and it was absolutely incredible. Got referred to this place today while out and about and decided to swing in while I was in the area. Tried the Carolina honey mustard bbq brisket sandwich. It was Smokey and juicy but wish I let him add more sauce tho for that tangy sweet flavor. The salt potatoes didn't even need butter just wonderful on their own. The cornbread be it a bit doughy was sweet and tasty. All in all good food for what I felt was a good price and certainly allot of food was given. We have been coming here for years and this place never disappoints. The food is absolutely delicious (my favorite is the smoked chicken with a side of pasta salad and coleslaw) and I love the outdoor seating option. They've expanded the amount of tables outside over the years and they have a children's play area in the middle, too. There's a lot of shady spots so even on the hottest of days it never feels too hot to sit out there and enjoy some delicious food. Everything happens for a reason. We got shut out of another eatery by the lake for lunch and happened upon Bob's on our way back to Groton. It's a roofed outdoor bar-be-cue right on the main road in Homer. You walk up and order and then you can take your food around back to the pavilion and the beautiful park-like setting. I had the brisket with double slaw and the hubs had the small rib dinner. That would be 6 ribs in that small dinner. Very generous. The brisket was juicy and tender and not much fat. Just picked up some 'Q from these folks. Excellent!! I hate to say it (not really) but the ribs are better than the Dinosaur BBQ. Dbbq was my first love after the defunked Gridley's (sp?) in Tennessee. Those were dry rub. Meatier than DBbq. Sauce is great. Sides are very good. I think Dbbq's beans are better, but the corn bread here is better. Give this place a try. Won't be disappointed. Unfortunately for myself, I forget about this place. Chicken quality depends on who is cooking. First of the year when opening it is great. Lots of attention and consistent frequency of marinade while cooking. As the summer progresses less flavor and it's dried out and over cooked. Expensive and I would willing pay if whomever was cooking cared about the quality and consistency. But it's hit or miss whether it's good or not so why change spending money on something I end up throwing away. read more

We stayed in the area and ended up eating BBQ 3x. We tried a little bit of everything and were very impressed! It's such a welcoming place! We really enjoy chatting with the staff! The last time we ate their bbq was last night at a family member's wedding where things fell though with the caterer at the VERY last minute. The combo 1/4 Chicken, was delicious, the ribs were ok and the pulled brisket was pretty good. The potato salad and especially the baked beans were yummy. The chicken is clearly the superstar here. Too full to try the desserts. There is a certain way to order as well, tell them what meats you want first and then when the order taker comes back then you tell them what sides you want. There's no signage at least that I saw which tells you this. Out of the three order takers I observed, they all had the same spiel which they repeated multiple times regarding the sides. Got to check out Bob's after a recommendation from my brother who lives in Cortland. Being from NY, but now living in Baltimore, it was really nice to eat outside on the picnic style benches while we got to witness some beautiful foliage as the leaves were beginning to change color. The smokiness of the grill stayed in my shirt my entire drive home from Homer to Baltimore. I guess it depends on who you ask if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I didn't mind though :) The prices were pretty standard for BBQ, but in my mind, they are always high. If I could change one thing it would be: to put the BBQ sauces on the tables or have them available for additional usage. Friendly staff. The ribs were quite good. The brisket was definitely drier, but still decent if slathered in sauce. Corn on the cob had a good texture but not much flavor. Corn bread was decent, nothing special. Macaroni salad and sweet potato were very good. Lots of bugs because it was a late August evening (bring bug spray). This really is an out of the way on the side of the road, sit outside BBQ place. We were staying in Ithaca for some hiking and found this place and it was totally worth the trip. It was a bright beautiful sunny day. The ordering was a little confusing as there are several people taking orders with no real line or process to ensure you get what you need. (Ie bbq sauce..we had to ask for it after we paid). Anyway. Hubby and I got pulled pork, brisket and the ribs. The pork and ribs were amazing. The ribs were like falling off the bone. The brisket was a bit dry in comparison to other bbq places I have been to. However, over all the experience was great and the food was good.
