I'm sure you've noticed the strong teriyaki/bbq aroma as you driven past the intersection of Dillingham and Waiakamilo. And it's all coming from that little shack with those four bright, bold, yellow letters: BOB'S. This is another childhood memory of mine and my review might once again be fueled by nostalgia. But the food and experience is just as I remembered it, and this time, I was able to show my wife all about it! We stopped by Bob's after my wife finished work for dinner and when she asked what I get here, I told her I aways get their Hibachi Chicken Combo (with Scallops). As it was her first time, she decided to try their Hibachi Chicken since it's unique to Bob's. We also ordered a large chocolate malt. I took her to the nearby tables and used to tell her my dad used to take me and my brother every so often when we were kids. It didn't take long for our order to be called and we dug right in. One thing I noticed that was changed (for the better in my opinion) was that there were three larger sized scallops as opposed a few smaller sized pieces of scallops back then. The chicken was tender and the sauce is more on the sweet side and just as I remembered it. My wife seemed to happily enjoy her food as well. One thing to note is that they put their Mac salad in a separate small container which is nice small detail. Their malt was as thick as ever and waited a bit for it to melt so we could eat it with a spoon. It was a thick, chocolate rich, and refreshing. Nostalgia is a powerful thing; but it's a testament to how Bob's has upheld that consistency of flavors. Twelve years later and it seems Bob's is timeless--same building, same aromas, same flavors and same dining experience on those tables. Their portions are hearty and their food is delicious. My family and I stopped here for lunch on a recent visit to Honolulu. We had just landed after leaving Maui and were hungry for lunch. We wanted Hawaiian BBQ and found Bob's Bar-B-Que on Yelp. We were very happy we stopped. Getting there was a bit tricky with all the rail construction in the area. We ordered two Mixed BBQ plates and got a good amount of food. The Kalbi, Chicken and Beef were nice and tender and had really good flavor. As "The Colonel" says, it was finger licking good!! It was the right choice for lunch and we had no leftovers. Bob's looks like it's been around for some time, but it appears they have a solid following, based upon how busy it was. We grabbed a table and proceeded to enjoy our lunch. Bob's is like that one last survivor in an action movie, standing tall while everything else around it is blowing up. While the rest of Dillingham is shut down, crumbling or under construction thanks to the rail project, Bob's is still here, holding its ground and serving up pure deliciousness. I've been coming here since I was a kid, with friends and family, and it's hard to imagine this corner without it. I heard they're moving further up into Kalihi eventually--still in my old neighborhood, thank goodness. After literally decades, everything still tastes the same. This place is my go-to for Teri cheeseburgers and their amazing mixed plates (kalbi, BBQ chicken & beef). Parking? Still sucks. And the pigeons? I love Bob's you can smell it from down the block. Flame grilled to perfection. Idky but I haven't been here in a while. First and foremost, the I went a few days in a row. Chicken sandwich is my go to. Teri beef could have used a lil more meat but for the price it was def good enough. The Bobs hamburger combo is affordable. I got one of those and a giant burger. Let me just say this, if you are feeding 2 grown adults and budget is not an issue skip the combo. I thought to myself, we could share a drink and fries. Nope. My burger was a baby burger and giant burger is called that for a reason. I think the fries are a smaller portion as well. All in all, the price is worth it and the food is on point as long as you skip the value meal. Go Ala carte and drink your soda at home unless you want the soda and less food. I feel cheated. As a native Californian, any Hawaiian food I have tried here does not even compare to Bob's. My husband and I stumbled upon this place while driving around. We saw a long line and decided if there was a lot of people, there must be a reason why. Bob's has a building where the inside is the kitchen. There is a window where you order and a different window where they call your name to tell you your order is ready. There are a bunch of tables, picnic style and condiments that you can put in little condiment containers to use. We shared a kalbi short ribs and fried shrimp combo, the combo also came with macaroni and white rice. The short ribs had sooo much flavor, and were tender to the bite. The macaroni definitely tasted freshly made, and the rice was perfectly cooked. The shrimp was soo crispy and tasty, I wish we would have gotten more. Even though this meal was meant to be for one person, my husband and I were so full with the portion we shared. I would definitely come back given the chance!! read more

I've gotta give this place props. I really had very little expectations before trying this place. Admittedly, my only experience with Hawaiian BBQ was from a couple of chain restaurants in California. This food is completely different. The flavor of the grilled meat instantly flashes your taste buds. The macaroni salad is completely undefeated. Anyways this place has always had a great selection of food ranging from burgers and fries to plate lunches and all tasty and at a decent price. My last visit was a bit lacking but no business is perfect and this visit was definetely more favorable. The staff is always cool but seems to be ever changing but its like that everywhere.... I usually order thr Ahi or steak and its been good so far. This is more of a place where folks just drive by to grab food and go but they do have a few tables and chairs under a roof but if you do want to eat there I wouldnt say it would be the cleanest place to sit and eat...old wooden picnic style benches thats all been over carved with names of peoples decades ago lol......So this little shack in kalihi might look a bit sketchy but the food service and prices is all good!! read more

Classic local BBQ drive in food. Can't go wrong if you need a fix for a local snack. Not super fancy just enough salts, fats, and carbs everyone's favorite. It's been around for a while and has been consistently the same which is a good thing. Their combos are good I'd recommend you just try anything you're in the mood for. Definitely not going to loose inches off your waist but definitely will keep you full and content. Haven't had a bad experience with them and always been a pretty quick turn around even for lunch when they get busy. My absolute favorite dish is the Hibachi Chicken with Fried Scallops. Comes with rice and Mac salad. Very generous portion for under $15. COMFORT FOOD FAVORITE, Has picnic tables but MOSTLY A TAKE-OUT PLACE. THE BAD: when it's full, the parking lot will test your skills. THE GOOD: The staff are patient and friendly. CHARMS: Not a huge value play given the moderately high prices, but most portions are solidly full sized. The marinades are rich and tasty but nostalgically heavy-handed at times. The open kitchen has no secrets and i'm sure isn't the most spotless (I've seen birds fly in through the open front counter). THE FOOD: EXCLUSIVE SPECIALTY CHOICES are the GIANT FRIES and GIANT CHOCOLATE MALTS. Both are delicious, but the Malt is a much better value than the overpriced Fries (five wedges, ?maybe a whole potato, for $5-6). Both are well worth the splurge of Cash and Calories for me. Otherwise I'm boring, usually stick with the BBQ Teri Chicken plate (NOT the Hibachi Chicken which has a red BBQ sauce I don't care for), Teri Pork, or some teri burger/sandwich. Plus always Fries and a Malt, for good measure. TIPS: PARKING - pull all the way up to the building, then BACK OUT INTO A SPACE so you can drive out forward when you leave. Overall, a nice surprise for my first time ever after years of driving past this iconic Bbq lunch plate. Pork ribs plate (mini) was good and price wise, better than expected. Ribs were tender and fell off the bone. The bbq sauce (cool) was ok but it took some of the heat away from the actual ribs when slathered on, resulting in a room temp product. Not bad, but the ribs lacked natural juiciness. The standard 2 1/2 scoop rice was so so and tasted like meh. Mac salad was almost room temp with a heavy mayo presence and a lack of seasoning. Mini has three large ribs and was sufficient for a late lunch. Parking could be a challenge but it's worth the efforts. Service was standard. read more

Fun fact - it was absolute fate that brought me and my group here. My friends and I were at a stop light after getting Costco gas and saw a man enjoying his meal and stuffing himself with bbq, coleslaw, and mac salad. The whole time we were at the light, we didn't see him stop eating! We were truly inspired by his actions and decided to stop by here before our flight and boy was it the greatest decision we ever made! If you're looking for the best Hawaiian bbq, go here. I believe all the locals come here and for a good reason. The food here is absolutely delicious and unforgettable. Bob's has made it to my list of places to visit every time I go to Hawaii. I opted for the mixed plate and replaced all of the rice with coleslaw. The plate also comes with one scoop of Mac salad. The meats that come in the plate are Kalbi, teryaki beef, and teryaki chicken. All the meats had a slight char that were so delicious and they were all marinated perfectly. My friends and I sat around the table eating just like that man we saw at the stoplight and fully understood why he was eating it nonstop. It was so delicious! I even saved it for the plane hours later and the food was just as good! Pro tip: make rice at home so you could have more coleslaw! Or you can also order a side of coleslaw as well. Their coleslaw and Mac salad were absolutely perfect. The ratio of the mayo wasn't overpowering and accompanied the meats really well. I have been getting Bob's for about 15-20 years now. Not often, but as another description mentioned, "generous portions" I never really had a complaint. However, my last purchase of a mixed BBQ plate got me one piece each of kalbi, bbq beef and bbq chicken. They weren't small pieces but they were no where near generous. I have had more before. I was told smaller pieces would get extra but I would consider what I got today on the smallish side and in the past, got me one extra kalbi or bbq chicken. I know prices are high but for almost $20 for the plate, I might as well look for greener pastures. $20 plates get me a bit more substance at Panda's, Peppa's and other places. read more

Lately I've been disappointed with some local plate lunch places but I knew Bobs wouldn't disappoint cause it's kind of an institution although I didn't grow up going here like I did Rainbows. Again, I was not disappointed at all. Was it the best plate lunch I've ever had? Absolutely not, but the portions are generous, the flavor is decent, and the price is exactly where it should be. I literally did a flip of the coin because I was torn between the hibachi chicken, fried scallops combo or the baked beans with polish sausage. The combo won and I'm not mad about it. I got 3 chicken thighs with their bbq sauce on it. The sauce wasn't overpowering in fact I would've preferred a little more flavor but it was good. The mac salad looked good and I had high hopes because in my opinion a good mac salad can take a plate lunch from mediocre to good. Bob's needed more flavoring. Definitely more salt but maybe a little onion too. The star of the show on the plate was the fried scallops. I know they aren't real scallops but they are delicious nonetheless. Crunchy, crispy, good size, and flavorful. I would get a plate just of that. Their tartar sauce isn't amazing but does the job. Again, for the price and what you get, Bob's is a winner in my eyes and I'll definitely be back to try the baked beans and sausage plate, and of course get more scallops. read more

I would pass by this place A LOT. I swear it's been around for years!! I finally gave in & gave it a try! What I ordered: Chicken katsu (2/5) - dry, hard & sauce is just a regular tonkatsu sauce. I prefer the sweet katsu sauces. I'm not sure if I had old katsu or a batch that was laying out, but my katsu was so hard :( Baby back (pork) ribs (5/5) - tender, flavorful & saucy.
