My favorite spot for chicken, ribs and salads is here at Koala Moa. When I am near by the area I like to make a stop to grab chicken, ribs plates for lunch or dinner. Koala Moa is located in Kalihi now, I remember they use to be on Nimitz when I visited Koala for the very first time, I remember seeing the chicken being cooked when I pass Nimitz, they cook the chix right next to the shop. They do sell out, depending how busy they get- best to call in to reserve, happen to me few times when they ran out of chicken, guess me going late in the afternoon is not a good idea. You can get the chicken, ribs, in a mini, combo, jumbo, or regular plate or as a side, either way you choose it all comes out the same. Depends on what type and amount of proteins you like. The sides are corn, salad, white or brown rice, and mac salads. Other ban chan available for purchase. The best value is the double combo plate, which comes with 1/2 chicken, 1 lb ribs and 5 sides for 35.99. - just cook your own pot of rice and get all sides of mac salad and salad. My favorite are the chicken and ribs combo, I must request to get the well done chicken ( burnt) note, * the chicken comes in whole, you have to request to chop up to pieces for $1. The chicken is hot, fresh, moist and has the right flavor and smoke. The ribs are my favorite, its tender and love the lemongrass flavor ( I just need a good fish sauce & cucumber salad when I eat this ribs) The salads are my favorites too, I love the dressing! 11/01/25 First time trying this place and wanted to try their rotisserie chicken. They are located in the City Square shopping center with a huge parking lot with plenty of open spaces. Got there about 1:30PM, walked in the restaurant and there were no customers. The gal at the counter greeted me but I had to wait a short bit as she was completing a phone order, which wasn't a problem since it gave me time to peruse the menu. The restaurant had a few tables and was very clean. I think the gal's name was Marlita from my receipt. She was very nice and personable. They have a pretty simple menu - chicken and ribs. I ordered the combo plate for $23.99, consisting of 1/4 chicken, 1/2 lb of ribs or 3 ribs, and 4 sides. I chose the toss salad no dressing, mac salad, & double corn. The toss salad was was full of brown lettuce. The mac salad was more like a mac-potato salad, tasted ok, maybe a little bland. The corn was can corn, which was ok with me. The chicken was not too bad. At first bite, it's very salty but once you get past that, it had good flavor. The lemon grass ribs were the same thing, very salty on the first bit but then it was ok. There was a good portion of the 1/4 chicken and the ribs were pretty meaty. It was a bit of a pricey meal to eat. Come to think of it, it's been many years since we've had huli huli chicken - not to be confused with rotisserie chicken, which we can get at any number of places. With this in mind, I searched and found Koala Moa in the small shopping complex on Dillingham Blvd. I wasn't sure of its exact location, so I relied on the online map - which led me in circles near 7-Eleven. I finally called and confirmed I was in the right area, just needing to walk a bit further in. Not knowing how big they were, I ordered two whole chickens and sat down to wait. It wasn't long before the lady brought over a large bag containing the individually bagged chickens - which was surprisingly heavy. At home, my wife eagerly opened one of the bags. I told her it would be fine if she wanted to gift the other to someone we knew. She said she would think about it. As we began eating my wife kept saying how "oishii" the chicken was, and she quickly decided whom to give the second one to. We had difficulty finishing one chicken between the two of us. My family and I usually just order the whole chicken, get home to fresh rice, and eat it with the bitter melon. So good! Even better when you use your fingers lol. The chicken is tender and tasty. Never overwhelming with flavor, just right. The bitter melon is our favorite! The sweet and sour is balanced out just right as pickled and just adds a perfect kick to your chicken when eaten together. The service is always great. Was going to write a stellar review as Koala Moa chicken is always, hot, moist, ono and seasoned well. It's chicken beyond any place in town that you can get freshly made, smokey, whole grilled chicken. A couple years back I was asked by clerk if I wanted to join their discount club whereby after so many chickens you buy, you get a free one. And that was a good hit for me since when I get chicken, I pick up for a couple of friends too. I just let 'em know I'm headed that way and since nobody likes the nasty, chewed up Dillingham Blvd any more (thanks Rail) the answer is always, "Shoots!" But the best part for them is I never charge them for the chicken. Never. So a free Koala Moa chicken delivered within the hour? Who's gonna say no? I AM that friend. So in all the times I've picked up 2 or 3 whole chickens, I get a free one pretty quickly and truthfully, gotta love that. Very nice in this day and age of rising prices and fewer deals. Anyhoo several months ago I was due to get my free chicken but the clerk said that I had enough points that if I waited until "next time" I could get 2 free chickens. I was stoked. So I put off the free grinds for a pot luck I was planning to go to soon after that. Show up with 3 whole Koalas and two were free? Yessah. The chicken was grilled well as always and not a disappointment at all. I was excited to see the same employee there from before and she also remembered my order. The menu is pretty straight forward with chicken ans ribs in different sizes, and combos as well. Depending on the size of plate that you order will depend on how many sides you can get. The sides are white or brown rice, corn, mac, or toss salad. I love the dressing for the toss salad so I usually get toss. They call it their house dressing which is an ume light vinegarette dressing. Sooooo goood! They also have add-ons consisting of kim chee, and takuan (ume or yellow) also in different sizes. As I'm still on a low-carb diet, the search continues for restaurants that have foods I can eat. This can be challenging but not impossible. (It also indirectly points out the fact that the majority of restaurant foods are carb-heavy.) Maybe I should open a keto restaurant. There are many delicious keto recipes that everyone would enjoy. I had Koala Moa chicken years ago and liked it. I also love ribs, so I ordered delivery of a whole chicken and a pound of lemongrass ribs. As is typical, the food costs are higher with delivery - $2 more on the chicken and $3 more per pound on the ribs. The price went up while the size of the chicken appears to have gone down. But I understand restaurants are struggling to survive so of course they need to take action to do so. Thumbs-up to the spatch-cocked chicken. It was as juicy and as flavorful (and messy) as I remembered. You can have it cold but personally I don't think that does justice to the taste. Have it as soon as you get it, or reheat the leftovers. It reheats well. Get the napkins ready. The lemongrass baby back ribs had the most meat of any restaurant ribs I've ever seen. They came in a biodegradable container, which is great for the environment but not for soft surfaces. The bottom of the container was damp and buckled as I picked it up, spilling juice on my sofa. I have a dark green sofa but the stain is still visible. It would ruin lighter-colored upholstery or carpets, so keep the container on a hard surface. (This advice also applies to the chicken, which comes in a plastic bag.) The ribs were properly prepared, cooked through but still juicy. I like lemongrass, but I've never had it in a starring role. Unfortunately I didn't like the taste. But as I have mentioned in other reviews, this is just a personal preference, not an indication of anything wrong. I will get the chicken again, but I'll skip the ribs. In addition to getting the meat ala carte, you can get plates. Ever since I was a kid, huli huli chicken, or rotisserie style chicken grilled over hot Kiawe charcoals, was always a favorite! Half chickens basted with a shoyu, sugar, and other seasonings produced a mouth-watering, smoky, juicy, and flavorful meal by itself or with rice and veggies. These chickens were sold by school clubs and various organizations as fundraisers. Tickets are purchased beforehand for pick-up on a specific date when the group would physically cook the chickens in bulk via huge wire racks and basting them with a shoyu sugar seasoning sauce, while they huli (turn) them over hot Kiawe charcoals (similar to mesquite). This is hard work, as it's done outside in the hot sun and fiery flames, let alone having the strength to turn the racks over for even cooking. The guys would do this labor, while the gals would be packaging the chicken for distribution. It should also be noted that the term, "huli huli" chicken, with its sauce, is trademarked by Pacific Poultry Co. and has been around for more years than I can remember. In 1989, another similar local business opened, Koala Moa Restaurant & Catering. The name "Koala Moa" was the perfect name, as it means "barbecue chicken" in Hawaiian. This review is for the Koala Moa Restaurant & Catering, owned and operated by the Shimabukuro family. With COVID, we miss those whole or half chicken fundraisers sponsored by various organizations and school clubs in HI, as these fundraisers came to a grinding halt. However, even if the fundraisers were to be held, you could still stop by Koala Moa's small and simple temporary structure on Nimitz Hwy. in Iwilei to purchase cooked chickens directly from them after being grilled rotisserie style in their open lot. For awhile, they were also grilling their chickens at the entrance of Bellows Air Force Station in Waimanalo, but that ended with COVID. Koala Moa temporarily closed its Iwilei location for a few months and relocated its business to the current larger and newer location at the City Square Shopping Center in Kalihi in the former Koolau Farmers location in Oct. 2020. The outdoor space next to their restaurant is large enough for them to grill their chickens, and you know when they are cooking them with the sweet, smoky aroma lingering in the air. Their menu, displayed in a digital and lighted green and white menu board just below the ceiling, is simple: chicken only (whole, half, or quarter); chicken with sides (white/brown rice, veggies, corn, salad, kim chee, takuan); lemongrass baby back ribs; and drinks. With a craving for rotisserie-style chicken, I knew exactly that I wanted only the whole chicken. It's a dollar more if they cut it up for you, but since I was going to eat it at home, I could easily do that on my own. The whole chicken is wrapped in a sealed white plastic bag. Yum, still warm after coming off the grill, the chicken was so savory, as it was so tender, juicy, and smoky from the charcoal cooking. Not ashamed to say that I even licked off the remaining juices in the bag! The single server at the counter was friendly, accommodating, and pleasantly answered all our questions. Our order was given to us within a few minutes of payment. COVID requirements are in place: face masks are required for entry, hand sanitizer available at the counter, one way in and out (follow the red tape on the floor), social distancing (stand on the designated red octagon spots on the floor), and take-out only. Still no fundraiser tickets to redeem for chicken, although as schools are slowly getting back to normalcy, the fundraisers should start soon. Hours of operation are Tues. to Sun., 10a to 6p; Mon. closed. Lots of available parking in the private lot shared by other vendors, with spaces just a few feet from Koala Moa's front door. Great that when we have a craving for rotisserie-style chicken, we can easily go to Koala Moa to get them, as there's no need to wait for a fundraiser! I ain't gonna lie to ya but I'm a SUCKA for Huli Huli Chicken! My 1st taste of Huli Huli Chicken dates back to my small kid times when my parents would buy Huli Huli Chicken from our school fundraisers. Lol! 20-20 hindsight, I guess that wasn't too smart, as I was actually wasting the Huli Huli sauce, but it sure was fun! :D Lol! Koala Moa used to have a restaurant on Nimitz Hwy., kinda near the City Mill on Nimitz Hwy., but I guess for sometime now, they had shut down that location. I'm so happy that Koala Moa has come back with a vengeance! Same great tasting Huli Huli chicken, maybe the chicken appeared be a little smaller in size, but still a great tasting Huli Huli Chicken! Today, I swung by Koala Moa to get my Huli Huli Chicken grindz on! I'm gonna get straight to da chase...........no rice, no sides or fillers, just hardcore "give me dat Huli Huli Chicken in one bag" deal! Grabbed me a 1/2 portion of Huli Huli Chicken, & out da door I went to my car to destroy my meat in a few minutes!!! What can I say about da Huli Huli Chicken??? Flavor of the Huli Huli Chicken marinade was on point! The Huli Huli Chicken had a nice smoky flavor, and it was grilled to perfection from the Huli Huli racks. Maybe my only complaint was that the chicken appeared to be lacking in nutrition, as it appeared malnourished. Lol! Either that, or I'm like "pig lil dat"..........so I was expecting a bigger piece of Huli Huli Chicken! :D I did eat Huli Huli Chicken last year on the Big Island (in Kealakekua), and comparing this piece to the one I got in Kealakekua, you can clearly see the difference in size, but that's another story. :D Looking to get some delicious Huli Huli Chicken???? Guess where I'm at every Fridays for lunch?! Yup, Koala Moa!! I love that the chicken taste fresh off the rotisserie grill, hot and ready to eat. I usually order the large plate which is their half chicken with 3 choices, 2 corn and 1 scoop rice. I'm sure the corn is canned corn and they do offer different types of kim chee, at cost. They are normally busy, either with foot traffic or phone orders so I do call in my orders ahead of time and it's always ready when I arrive. read more

Finally got to check out the new Location of Koala Moa Huli chicken. Originally they were located on Nimitz across from Lowe's. For all those who remember it use to be a Kentucky fried chicken . My family and I decided for dinner Huli Huli chicken. I haven't eaten a good Huli Huli chicken for months could be at least a year. I'm sorry I need to be more accurate on name of Huli Huli chicken. Now you can't call it Huli Huli chicken that's why most places call it Rotisserie chicken . Just because someone in the mainland copyright that name so now everyone don't use Huli Huli anymore. Can you believe that us locals grew up calling Rotisserie chicken Huli Huli chicken it's jus because. Huli Huli is to turn or flip in Hawaiian. Anyway a little education on Chicken ha ha . I also ordered their Lemon grass ribs it was nice and flavorful and come off the bone ribs Wow! It was good even though I not a fan of Lemon Grass seasoning I know the Thai's like to use that in their cooking .
