My aunties love the lau hoa tuoi here, but haven't been here in ages, so I took them! I've never dined here and don't eat vegetarian food, but it was such a pleasant surprise and as delicious as people have mentioned. The place was absolutely packed on a Sunday afternoon, and I feel like there weren't enough servers to go around for this particular day (weekends in general?). In spite of this, the skinny man in black was 100% amazing and SO expedient when we flagged him down since our broth was evaporating quickly. He was super patient dealing w/ the masses. There were two others - one was our main server who was super over it (understandable lol) and a girl who was also doing her best - three total for a full house. The only other tip I have is to keep your hotpot on low heat immediately after it boils. However, here you can also find dishes like Banh Hoi La Lot, Banh Uut, Mi Quang, and Canh Kho Qua. Dishes that my mom and grandma make, and the average American has never tried. FOOD: Nem Cuốn Bồ Dề (5/5) - Vietnamese spring rolls with "pork" and fresh vegetables. Comes with a tasty, nutty dipping sauce. If you add the fresh chillis they provide to the sauce, it will give a good kick. Mì Tiềm (5/5) - Vietnamese "duck" noodles that I might like even more than the actual meat version. Dark broth that tastes light, herbal, and healthy. The fake duck meat is pleasant. I love the pickled papaya on the side that comes with this dish! Bún Măng Gỏi (4.5/5) - Vietnamese bamboo noodle soup with a side of "chicken" salad. Delish! The broth was super light and flavorful. They were generous with the bamboo, the noodles were the perfect texture, and the salad was super refreshing. Not sure I can tell the difference between their "duck" and "chicken" though. Added the dressing/sauce to the salad along with the chillis and loved it. Not pictured, but all the hot pots I've tried from here are super delicious as well. Came here for lunch with my bestie on a Tuesday. We both love vegan/vegetarian food so we chose this spot. It was pretty empty and we got seated right away. The restaurant is dimly lit and relatively quiet. The menu is pretty big and it seems like prices haven't changed that much. My wife has been a vegetarian for over 10 years, and we have visited this restaurant many times. The older lady owner has always been very kind, calm, and welcoming, always greeting customers with a warm smile. We also often interacted with the younger woman working there, whom we later learned is the daughter-in-law. Both of them have always been extremely kind and respectful, and we never had any issues with them. Unfortunately, we had a very unpleasant experience today with the owner's son. My wife called the restaurant ahead of time because we were in a time crunch. She politely asked if they could set up a table for three since we were about 10 minutes away and already knew what we wanted to order, just to save time. In the past, one of the women there had helped us do something similar. The man who answered the phone immediately said no in a very rude and irritated tone and insisted that no one there had ever done that before. Despite the uncomfortable phone call, we still went to the restaurant. We got a table and placed our order. Afterward, my wife politely mentioned to the older owner that the person who answered the phone earlier had been rude. At that point, her son came out from the back and said he was the one who answered the phone. Instead of calmly discussing it, he immediately accused my wife of lying and became very aggressive. My wife calmly explained that someone there had helped her before, but that it didn't matter anymore since we were already there. She only wanted to point out that he shouldn't speak so rudely to customers. Unfortunately, he escalated the situation. He began waving his arms and leaning toward my wife over his mother in a way that felt threatening. He loudly said he hates people who lie to him and that this is simply the way he speaks--people can accept it or leave. At one point he grabbed a water bottle from the table in a way that made the situation feel even more tense. His mother actually had to step in and push him away from my wife. As a husband standing there watching this happen, it was extremely upsetting. We came there simply to support their business and enjoy a vegetarian meal, not to be yelled at or accused of lying in front of everyone. What makes this especially disappointing is that this is a Vietnamese vegetarian restaurant filled with Buddha statues and symbols that represent peace, mindfulness, and kindness. Yet the son--who said he now runs the restaurant--displayed behavior that was the complete opposite of those values. We have always respected and supported this restaurant, which makes this experience even sadder. No customer should ever feel threatened or disrespected when they are simply trying to support a business. Wait, why haven't I been to Bồ Đề Tịnh Tâm Chay before? Although I am not vegetarian myself, I LOVE vegetarian food. Especially the vegetarian food at temple. I've been trying to find a spot that offers dishes of the same (or higher) caliber, and I think Bồ Đề Tịnh Tâm Chay checks off all my boxes. First of all, the interior is absolutely wonderful! It encapsulates a relaxing ambiance with the dark wood and hints of Asian influences. My family and I went during lunch, and we were seated immediately. The waiter didn't rush us at all and even entertained our questions about the menu. Their menu is incredibly extensive, and there's options I've never even heard before! It took me a while to decide. I was speechless once the food arrived! Everything tasted amazing! My favorite was the eggplant in basil sauce. It was perfectly seasoned and exactly what I was craving. We also ordered the seared tofu in garlic and it came in a tangsuyuk-like sauce. At first, I was a little worried; it looked incredibly saucy. However, the thick sauce was lighter than I expected. Not too salty either. It wasn't overwhelming yet plenty flavorful. Another hit! We also ordered the hot pot (lẩu) and they brought out a fire-lit pot with noodles, vegetables, and broth galore. It was a somewhat sour soup. Definitely a feast to share! There were so many options on the menu that even my dad, who is a self-proclaimed meat lover, was more than content with his meal. My grandma showed me this place. There's a lot of seats inside including both booths and tables. The waiting area has a lot of free documents - typically bible stuff. There's a minimum amount to spend in order to use card. They do not accept Apple Pay! Today surprisingly there was a waitlist?! The manager was playing host which was odd as he seemed to really struggle with speaking and seemed clearly out of his depth, likely the reason for the waitlist. He appeared flustered and as confused as we were trying to understand what appeared to be randomly strung together words. I see many reviews mention he is rude, but I do not think it's intentional, he honestly just seemed to be struggling with comprehending what was going on around him. Not sure putting him in a hosting position was fair to him or the patrons but as manager would assume he elected to do it? I found out he was the manager when asking for the manager to see if the poor guy could possibly be swapped out with someone more capable. The few of us waiting made the best of it playing a game out of trying to decipher what he was trying to say. After a lot of arm shrugs and giggles asking each other what did he just say, he shouted something that sounded like, "goofoo" luckily he was looking at us so we understood it was time to grab our table. Based on our last visit we were not expecting great service or ambiance but were hoping perhaps last time we had just ordered the wrong dishes and ordering something different would change our opinion. Unfortunately this visit was like our last and will be our last. The food was not great, sauces and broths over sweetened, noodles come out as sticky globs of goo, the curry is simply inedible. I will say though the spring rolls were pretty good, although the dipping sauce tasted more like maple syrup than peanut sauce. In retrospect, I think the draw here is not necessarily tasty authentic Vietnamese food but the fact everything is vegetarian. One of the best vegetarian/vegan restaurants I've been to in a long time, especially for Asian food. This place really knows how to make 'fake meat' dishes that sometimes taste even better than the real thing. When I visited on a weekday afternoon, the place was buzzing with Buddhist monks--a sure sign that the food is delicious. My husband and I shared the Vegan Ginger Chicken (#162), the Veggie Fish with Sweet and Sour Sauce (#185), and the House Special Grilled Sour Ham Rolls (#1). Food House special "fish" with dill - So delicious. I have no idea how they maintain a meaty texture and the flavor is similar to fish. Even if it wasn't, it is good on its own. I am not used to dill in Asian dishes, but I thought it made a perfect addition to the dish. Vegetarian bo luc lac - This was a little disappointing. It had the fixings of a bo luc lac and even looked better than some actual beef bo luc lac, but flavor-wise, it was the most "vegetarian" tasting dish in a typical way. I forgot what this one was called, but it was a fried noodle dish - THIS SAUCE IS SO GOOD and it has the PERFECT texture. The noodles were crunchy on the bottom and chewy on top. This is one of my favorite vegetarian restaurants in OC. Their restaurant is clean with nice decor. Their menu offers so many items you will surely find something you like. All the food I have ever had here is delicious! I love that every dish has so much flavor. Their use of veggies and fruit is amazing. They have many drinks to choose from as well. The only problem I've ever had is the service. For one it is incredibly slow. I've always just chocked it up to their laid back vibe. But it is slow. And at times non existent. This restaurant is great on non-religious days. They're not super busy, even during lunch time, and it's easy to get in and out. If you go on religious holidays then just be prepared. I can't fully comment on their organization or services now since it has been a while since we've gone here on a religious holiday. Food: Overall, the taste of their food is awesome. Good quality, portions are good, and they really know their stuff. Bun cha Hanoi was my main dish! The patties were crisp on the outside but very juicy on the inside. No dryness at all! The flavor was good but I feel like something is lacking? Perhaps a spice/herb? It just didn't fully feel right but I was very satisfied. The patties are big so it easily filled me up! I had to take half of the portion home for dinner. The two other dishes were chosen by my sister and mother. They also complimented the flavors and execution of both. The "thit" for the banh hoi was very crunchy. I wasn't a fan of the red coloring but that's it. The two of them cleaned out the bowl of bun mit though! When not busy, the vibe of the restaurant is relaxed and casual. It has a family friendly warmth to it. If you've yet to try this place then I do recommend giving it a shot! Our family went here for vegetarian food (ăn chay) during our 49 days mourning. We really wanted to enjoy this restaurant, but the service made it difficult. There was only one server working the entire dining room while the owner sat nearby and didn't acknowledge customers at all, even when it was clear people needed help. As the owner, he should have gotten up to help his worker. It was shocking to witness such terrible leadership. Instead of taking our order, the server handed us a piece of paper to write down our own selections, which felt unprofessional for a dine-in restaurant. We ordered a pot of tea, and when we simply asked for one extra cup, we were told we'd have to pay for an entire additional pot. That makes zero sense and completely unacceptable. For our final course, we ordered hot pot (lẩu), which the server left it on an empty table next to ours and then disappeared. They never cleared our table, never checked on us, and both the server and the owner flat-out ignored us The food itself may have potential, but the service issues overshadowed the entire experience. What a delicious treat to have visited this location. My date brought me here, having had visited here themselves recently. It's a vegan/vegetarian location, but don't let that scare you away from trying Bo De Tinh Tam Chay! The decor in here is so relaxing, as if you're situated in a lost forest. Just walking in, I felt calmer and knew this would be delightful place. We were immediately seated and given menus, though I had no idea what to try here, so just went with some recommendations. Everything looked excellent here, but we went for the Beef Salad, a dumpling soup, and also a noodle soup that my date was most raaving about (it was actually quite a delicious broth!). All the dishes were so on-point with the flavors - and yes, the immitation meat does taste pretty close to the real thing. We were definitely full from the delicious entrees here. Their beverage menu is also good. I got the Pennywort drink, which was refreshing - not too sweet, just perfect! You won't have to worry about parking here, as it's located in a huge plaza.
