When I found out that I would be working (at least part time) in this part of the South End, I was a little disappointed. My first few lunch reconnaissance missions yielded pizza, Chinese food, and some chains, so I despaired of ever finding a good neighborhood place that wouldn't make me feel like I swallowed a bag of grease coated anvils by mid-afternoon. Then I discovered Blunch while out on a walk and found the type of lunch place I had been looking for. Blunch is tiny, although I've always been able to sit down at one of their counters if I was feeling like I needed to get out of the office for a bit. With its location across from BMC, they do a brisk take-out business. There seem to be a lot of regulars, as the owner and staff recognize most people when they come in. Since I wait and order there instead of calling something in, I usually have a 5-10 minute wait for my food, but everyone is so nice and friendly that I can't really say I mind. I love the fact that Blunch serves breakfast all day, and they certainly deliver with a delicious egg and cheese sandwich that has always been cooked perfectly. I usually get a breakfast sandwich in the interest of being "good," but their desserts look fresh and delicious, and I'm always tempted by the brownies and cookies. I did try one of the daily special paninis which was a breaded eggplant with cheese and roasted red peppers. I'm not a huge fan of red peppers, so I pulled some of them off of the sandwich (which was gigantic enough that I couldn't finish it). Since I had elected to eat it at Blunch, the owner noticed and mentioned that next time she would remember not to put peppers on mine, which I thought was incredibly sweet and great customer service! The sandwich was still delicious, so I reassured her that the peppers really weren't a big deal. I've never been bowled over by the coffee at Blunch, but I don't consider it a coffee place, so it doesn't really bother me (although I do need to try one of their iced coffees now that it is getting to be spring). With the delicious food, nice atmosphere, convenience, and friendly staff, Blunch won me over and is now my favorite lunch treat. read more

I keep coming back to order "the bird" great flavors! The staff here seem really nice, especially the lady often behind the counter who I'm guessing is the owner/operator. The chocolate cookies won some award but I disliked them VERY sweet and almost more like a pudding/desert. But I can see how others would go crazy for them. read more

The staff is incredibly nice and they serve awesome food. They typically have a few specials for the day, but I highly recommend the Provencal off of the standard menu. You can also get any of the sandwiches in salad form. They serve egg sandwiches for breakfast too and you can get those all day. This is a great lunch spot if you are in the area. read more

What a fantastic find! I came across this place with the lovely Yelp app, that let's me know what delicious food is nearby when I am hungry. After attempting to go to the SoWa winter market (and failing, as I had the wrong day), I typed "brunch" into the search box of Yelp, and out came the answer: Blunch. This wasn't totally what I had in mind, but it was definitely worth the walk. The sandwich I had was FANTASTIC, including goat cheese, olive oil, fresh veggies, and pesto. Did I mention the goat cheese? In addition, they make homeade granola that smells like a cinnamon dream when coming in off the street. The overall price, including a nice hot beverage for a cold Boston day, was really reasonable for the area that we were in. If you are on a stroll in the area, and you should be if you like the beautiful old brick apartment buildings, and the SoWa markets on Sundays, then try one of the sandwiches. Right across the street from Boston Medical and Boston University School of Public Health makes this a favorite of many students and doctors. And it's easy to see why. Their sandwiches are interesting combinations that don't skimp on flavor. My handsdown favorite is The Piglet. Ham, bacon, maple aioli, cheddar, and greens. The mix of flavors is savory sweet and leaves you wanting to come back for seconds. Their menu consists of pressed sandwiches and bagel sandwiches. Make sure to check out the daily whim menu behind you as you order as it changes daily and is always sure to please. Blunch also has fresh baked goods and of those, the chocolate chip cookies are a dead knockout. I've seen people come in and order 10 of those and leave everyone else upset because they couldn't get any. They're that good. And because they're so popular, they're usually right out of the oven. Smallish interior with just a few seats. It can get crowded quickly. There is a bench outside if you want to sit out there, but no table outside. Most people get their food to go and end up eating on the grass at BU across the street. Up to you! Prices are reasonable. Sandwiches are under $10 for a hefty portion. Friendly staff always makes the experience better and he was very helpful at assisting first-timers like ourselves. 2. Food was great. Both of our sandwiches were creative, not too "out-there" and we noticed that their choice of ingredients and sauces are great. Cons: 1. the place is tiny. TINY. 2. for the amount of food you get (small portions) its a bit pricey. Overall though I would definitely go again. I heart Blunch. I don't eat gluten and I love love love their gluten-free quiche. The owner always sprinkles some extra cinnamon on my cappuccino and greets me with a smile. The owner there said I can pick any sandwich they made and turn it into a salad. She is really understanding about my allergy. Thanks to Boston Yelp I was able to find a quick place for breakfast. A slight trek from our hotel, but the food was good and not heavy like typical breakfast fare can be. We got the breakfast sandwiches with sausage and bacon and were pleased. Perfect portions. Someone also got the homemade granola (huge portion!), which is wonderful - extra points for butterscotch chips! The baked goods especially the cinnamon muffin were also very tasty. I love this place!! It replaced Christopher's Cafe (which had it's own charm, good cookies and coffee but wasn't exactly clean... but I digress) Anyway the only downside is the hours. They are open 8-3 Mon-Fri.. 10-3 Saturday and closed Sunday. The food is great. When the two most delicious sandwiches I've ever had really love each other... Confession: I'm a southern girl who hates cole slaw. It's sour, it's drenched in watery mayo and tastes absolutely vile. I will do anything to avoid it. I ask for substitutions, I ask for it to be omitted, I won't even eat with a fork that touched cole slaw. The only exception to this rule: Blunch. Load that horseradish-kicking slaw onto the1.5-inch thick roast beef with marble rye called the Lower East Side. The sandwich itself is huge and hard to finish but I brave the food coma because I think I'd cry if I wasted a single shred of slaw. The ingredients are top of the line, and every component of each sandwich is meticulously crafted. Vegetarian/don't love roast beef/craving something a little lighter? The Provencal is served on a perfect baguette and somehow creamy goat cheese and tangy artichoke work together for a perfect sandwich. The attention to detail is amazing and the results are spectacular. The sandwiches are so well-crafted, and every top-of-the-line ingredient is chosen carefully. Was staying with some friends in Boston for the weekend and was looking for a breakfast spot. Found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. The place is cute but small. I think there are enough seats for 8 people. When we arrived at 10:30am all the seats were taken already. By the time the food was ready the a few seats opened up. the 4 of us all ordered some sort of eggwich. the eggs are so fluffy!!! and the sauces and extras that came with it are tasty. the staff are also friendly. oh yes-- we got a chocolate chip cookie to go. and omg... seriously 1 of the best cookies i ever had! made the ride back home more enjoyable. read more

The crusty baguette complimented the amazing deliciousness inside. Excellent vegetarian option! Longer version: My husband and I biked from JP and it was totally worth the cold and wind. (NOTE: We didn't realize until afterwards, but they do give 10% off for people with a Bicycle Benefits sticker.) Luckily, we beat the rush. It's a small cozy place, so if you're looking to sit, you might have to wait a bit. If you do get to snag a seat by the window, you can feel like you've been transported to NYC's Lower East Side (well, sorta). Needless to say, it has a lot of character and the vibe is easy going. The people working there are great and you could tell they're putting a lot of love into their food! None of these hipsters and their so-so sandwich making (no offense to hipsters). In addition to our amazing sandwiches, we had a triple chocolate muffin. Nice crispy top, moist inside and tons of jumbo sized chocolate chips. I've walked by this place every day on my way to Boston Medical Center and finally got to stop in today. It's a very cute space, and it feels very clean but warm. The owner was there this morning and discussing soup ideas for the day - each day, she creates 2 soups, one of which is usually vegetarian, and her ideas go along with whatever ingredients are fresh and on hand and also the season. I got a triple chocolate cookie, which was dense and chocolatey, with a mix of semi sweet, milk, and bittersweet (I think) chocolate chips. It's bigger and denser than the cookies from Flour, and mine was fresh out of the oven. It had a nice crisp edge but was soft in the center. The crustless quiche comes in a variety of flavors, and I chose the roasted red bellpepper with goat cheese. There's a good amount of goat cheese, which adds a lot of sweet and tangy flavor. I was surprised at how much portabello mushroom was in the filling, and I'm a huge fan of mushrooms, so I liked it a lot. It was warmed and not too eggy, perfect with mixed greens. I debated between the Bird (chicken sandwich) and the meatloaf, and I went for the meatloaf, since it's a bit more unique. It's a thick and dense piece of meatloaf, but it's very moist. It's topped with roasted tomatoes, which was my favorite part of it. The cheese is mild and a bit overpowered by the meatloaf, but if you want something cheesier, there are many other options with more cheese, like the Meltdown. Staff is very friendly, and it's nice to see how hands-on the owner is with the place. I noticed some regulars coming in for their morning coffee, and it's just a very nice, honest, neighborhood-feeling, which is sometimes harder to find in the South End. It's very welcoming, and I'm definitely going to go back to try some of the other grilled sandwiches! For orders less than $10, it's cash only; otherwise, they take visa/mastercard. read more

Despite this, after a resident at BMC shared that the chocolate chip cookies here are the best around, I came in to discover the truth for myself (I'm all about finding value and great taste when visiting other states). I became hooked. They are the perfect combination of soft and crisp, with large, gooey chunks of chocolately joy. It's holiday season, too, so the background music almost transforms each bite into a minor Christmas miracle. I'm a fan of their sandwiches and I've tried the bird and the giving tree-- both sandwiches feature quality ingredients and a fresh taste, so I expect all their other sandwich options will live up to expectations. Recently, I ordered an onion bagel with egg and roasted tomato. It didn't disappoint. The one thing that did disappoint, though, was the rude lady at the counter who took my order. I'm not sure if it's a language barrier or incompetence, but she seemed confused by the order (though she repeated back what I said). After a 20 minute wait, she brought out the wrong sandwich and when I pointed this out, she returned with a receipt where she clearly entered in the wrong sandwich and tried to use this to argue why the egg sandwich staring at me was indeed the correct item. Came here on a Tuesday afternoon , the place was busy but not crowded, filled with staff from BMC right across the street. I got the Bird which was great except it could use a little more chicken and the end of my sandwich it was just bread and the artichoke spread. My mom tried to customize a sandwich and received a little push back from the owner about why she wouldn't want one of the options she made. If you are feeling a little adventurous and not a picky eater there are some good looking ones on the menu! My bf goes to BU med school which is right next to Boston Medical Center which is right by this place. It's a small place with only several chairs for sitting down. Most people take their sandwiches to-go. I got the Wilbur with their super yummy spicy aioli sauce and my bf got the lower east side. This is my second time there and the sandwiches are always SO good!! Nice and crispy with a ton of flavor. The only downside is that this place is kind of expensive. It's about $8-12 per sandwich. Normally I refrain from reviewing restaurants that don't offer table service, but I like this neighborhood eatery so much I wanted to write about Blunch. As the name would imply, the tiny little restaurant on the corner of Harrison Avenue and East Springfield Street in the South End serves breakfast and lunch. Open Monday through Saturday, Blunch has a Vegan and Gluten Free friendly menu. Blunch serves Eggwiches & Bagelwiches ($4 - $7); Sandwiches & Salads ranging ($7 - $8); and of course Sweets and fresh Fair Trade, Organic coffee. One of my favorite sandwiches is The Provencal ($7.50), ingredients include: fresh Vermont goat cheese, tomatoes, artichoke hearts, cashew pesto, greens, and black olive puree pressed on panini. If you live or work in this corner of the South End, definitely check out this tiny eatery. The ingredients are all fresh and made behind the counter. My girlfriend and I split The Bird and The Boca. She'd been here a number of times and these are her two favorite pressed sandwiches among the non-red meat options in the menu. We ordered ahead to avoid the lunch rush from the hospital staff across the street, so we were in and out within a couple of minutes. Parking in this area is a nightmare, so definitely take the T here or order ahead. Note, this is not a sit down restaurant. The Bird rocked my world (they had me at artichoke aioli), and was definitely my favorite of the two. The Boca was also good, but I think I was too eager about The Bird to notice much. Blunch is a tiny shop on busy street corner across from Boston medical. I went around lunchtime but there was a pretty long line, a lot of people had ordered ahead and just picked up which is what I will do next time. I like that it's pretty cheap for a sizable and good quality sandwich. It's most of the customers are medical students so that's also pretty cool. I will definitely come here again because the food was good, it was cheap, and especially if you are ordering ahead it'll do in a pinch. read more

This place was perfect as a rainy Monday brunch spot. When you can get drinks, a muffin, and two sandwiches for $25 in the South End, you know you've found a winner. Man, I sure do love sandwiches. I had the Meltdown (three different cheese and tomato grilled to perfection on thick white bread) with a cup of creamy tomato soup. While the soup was nothing to write home about, the sandwich was perfect. I mean, is there any better comfort food on a rainy day than a grilled cheese with tomato soup? I think not. And yes, I dipped. The thing I really dug about the place was the same thing that was a bit unfortunate: it's super tiny. My friend and I were able to grab a spot by the window on the bar/counter so we could people watch, but we lucked out. I would say no more than seven people could sit comfortably in their seating area. At the same time, I really loved being able to find this tiny intimate place where I could just enjoy a great sandwich and good conversation. To the person who based their review on the coffee (which was very good btw)... You went to a sandwich shop for coffee... Didn't try a sandwich, and proceeded to judge said sandwich shop not on their food.... But on their COFFEE?! That's like going to Starbucks and saying "can't speak to their coffee! We recognized the owner from the show, and she was the one to take our order. I got the "Bird" and my girlfriend ordered the "Piglet." When I say the most amazing sandwiches, I mean it. I finally got around to checking this place out after having lived only a couple blocks away from it for almost a year now and I can safely say that I'll be a regular here from now on. I went with the Beef on rye and it was amaaazing - hands down the best roast beef I've ever eaten in my life. The herby flavor of the Boursin cheese complemented the meat and tomatoes perfectly and I enjoyed every single bite.
