I called from Maplewood and specifically asked if I could bring my small dog in a stroller inside (after being told by the man on the phone that there was no outside seating). Once inside I was told that having a dog inside was "against the law." so we had to leave. Other restaurants in Montclair do allow dogs, so I don't know what "law" the owner was talking about. Bottom line, they don't allow dogs, but there was an employee who gave us wrong info. Very frustrating! read more

My new go-to place for breakfast and lunch. EVERYTHING is good. The vegetable salad with eggplant is my favorite. Eggs and bacon are good too. Plenty of flavored coffees to choose from A little pricey but the portions are big and the food comes and quick and hot. read more

Small but cozy breakfast/lunch spot. My gf got a Belgian waffle with strawberries and whipped cream and she really enjoyed it. I got a egg white veggie omelette but when asked to substitute the onions with broccoli, they said they didn't have broccoli which is why I'm giving only giving them 4 stars. Good at breakfast, pretty good for lunch, and superb for their coffees. Their Chai tea latte, although you can find this staple literally anywhere, for some reason tastes.. a bit more homemade, not like the usual pre-made packet deal...although it very well could be, who knows, it just tastes better than usual. Because they roast the beans on site, the coffee is always fresh and superbly delicious. Seriously. Forget S-bucks. I love a good espresso, but definitely try their macchiato if you are a little timid. Weekend brunch menu is definitely a major draw. Standard breakfast fare, but with a few twists.... Salmon benedict is yummy, as is zucchini frittata, croissants are fresh and delicate and so freaking good... That's the thing! They have all the standard items, but they just taste *better* than standard. But the price is average, or even shy of average. Portion sizes are NORMAL .... not completely outrageous, so you can leave feeling full, rather than disgustingly stuffed. The rosemary potatoes are standard, and honestly this is a bit of a downside for me -- wouldn't you like to have the option of just plain-old potatoes cooked in oil with salt and pepper? Not being a hater, but ya know, sometimes I just am not feeling herbs and starch. Maybe I am just crazy. Service is prompt, friendly, and the master(s) of multi-tasking. One other thing that I wish they could improve on... the ventilation system. Good Lord, does it get stuffy and muggy in there... Talk about your cozy diner-like local joints! Bluestone is THE place to grab a seat with a warm coffee and a tasty plate of food. I was jonesing for a change of scenery in my local area so headed over here for some grub. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and bustling at the same time. You'll find families, friends, and solo acts like myself all congregating here. Be warned, they do close a bit early at 2:30pm. Their menu is vast and includes tons of breakfast favorites with a twist. I was lucky enough to grab the special tumeric tofu special. It was awesome and the home fries, gluten-free toast and jam were yummy too. I didn't enjoy the coffee so much, but then again, I'm not a big coffee drinker. The service was great too! My food came out very fast and looked great. The only bad thing I can say is that Bluestone does not stay open very late, so be sure to check before heading over. Otherwise, I highly recommend grabbing brunch here with a friend or with your family. You will not be disappointed! read more

Great breakfast/brunch place with plenty of seating and very reasonable prices. I got the spanish omelette with tomato, spinach, sausage, onion, and salsa and it came with rosemary potatoes and multigrain toast. Loved the omelet-normally I can't finish the whole thing because it's too eggy but it was packed with meat and veggies which I loved. The potatoes were seasoned and cooked very nicely-crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The multigrain toast which I normally fine to be standard at breakfast places was also much better here compared to other places. Our waiter was also really nice and patient-it took me five years to figure out what I wanted to order but he never once looked irritated by my indecisiveness read more

Really good, strong coffee. Food was fresh and satisfying. I had the Bluestone omelet and my dining partner had the breakfast burrito. The side of rosemary potatoes were crispy and savory. Definitely recommend for an easy Sunday brunch. Sitting tip: do not sit anywhere in the front of the main dining area if you are opposed to large groups of people waiting and gusts of wind blowing on you and your omelet. Came here for brunch on a Saturday and got the eggs Benedict and coffee. The eggs were nothing special and the coffee was good, but I'm not sure if there are free refills because the waitress never came back to our table after giving us our food. The service here wasn't very good considering we didn't even get water for the table or a check up asking if everything was ok. Also, I could feel the death stare of one of the hostesses who clearly wanted us to immediately leave. I understand that it was pretty busy since it was Saturday, but I'd like to take my time eating, so that was uncomfortable. Also came here another time for a belgian waffle and it was quite basic. 8 out of 10 Came here on a Saturday at 11 for brunch. The place was bustling as it always is. They recently expanded so it is quite a bit bigger than it used to be, so the wait is not long. Our waitress was very kind and quick when we asked for things, although she was very busy. I ordered an Americano, which was good-nothing to write home about. The veggie omelet I ordered had: Eggs (Shocking), Spinach, Tomatoes, I asked to sub the onions with Chives. It came with toast and I asked for fruit as a side instead of home fries. YUMM! Pretty good. My prego wife and I stopped in today for an early morning Saturday breakfast. Initially I was underwhelmed by the terse waitress who we spoke to first. We asked to sit at one of the empty booths, as we saw another couple leave the same table. She said "No, those are only for 3 or more." When I countered with, "No, we just saw a couple leave." She argued back that there was a child in the other seat. There was, but there were TWO booths initially occupied, one with a couple and another with a couple and a child. BOTH were now empty. Anyway, to not make a scene, we squeezed into a two-top. We enjoyed the omelettes, although a little over-done. Coffee was excellent. Service, too, with another waitress was spot on and this one was cheery and happy. We will come back, likely, hopefully this time without an argumentative waitress. By the way, those booths sat empty for the time we were there, until another couple arrived and they were seated at the booth. The waitress who had not honored our request served them. Bluestone is a solid breakfast cafe. They roast their coffee on premises and it is very good, although strong in flavor. Service has been good in the many times I have been and they have a fair assortment of omelets, egg dishes, and specials, which are listed on the chalkboard in the restaurant. There are 2 small tables for outdoor seating on Watchung Ave. The interior is a bit tight, but they do have a few booths. Many people I know come just to get coffee to go. read more

A cute spot in Watchung Plaza, it was a little busy when we arrived mid morning. Fortunately we were able to get a seat quickly. The French toast and buttermilk pancakes were both solid options. The scrambled eggs were pretty uninspired. Coffee was good. FYI- they don't take American Express. Say what? You can also order coffee and small snacks to go, which I imagine may be convenient for the commuters jumping on the train in the morning. Overall it seems like a quality establishment. I've had breakfast here many times because I enjoy the cozy atmosphere and have tried enough dishes by now to know which are their best items. A lot of the food is mediocre and the service is okay. It's great for families and children. I love the breakfast burrito and breakfast quesadilla, and their strawberry smoothies and hot chocolate are great too. Not a fan of their eggs benedict (which I looove at most other places), the belgian waffle is very basic, and their coffee is nothing special. I also wish they'd serve a more generous portion of potatoes with their egg dishes because they are cooked with rosemary and are delicious. This is really more like a 2.5 star rating. I actually had my first cup of coffee here. I had a latte. Does that count? Anyway, it is a little tight to wait for a table here since it was a little cold and not much space just inside the door. There were a couple tables of 4 open and they wouldnt seat 2 people at them. There wasnt a huge wait, so I am not sure what the issue was there. Overall, thats not really a big deal to me. The ambiance is interesting. A little music would have been nice. I saw that there were plenty of speakers. Maybe they forgot to turn it on that day. I went for brunch after getting a recomendation from a friend. We had the breakfast burrito and the breakfast queso's. Nothing really to write home about. I would have expected rice and some spices etc for the burrito. No dice. It was generally bland. The food tasted fine, but it was very basic. Same goes for the queso. It tasted fine but was a mess due to its construction. We were left hanging for a while and wanted to get a cookie and milk and we were brought the bill instead. We were able to get the cookie and milk anyway. The glass was tiny, but the cookie was served warm which was very enjoyable. It is not apparent, but you should pay at the counter, not at the table. Also there is only street parking at this place. Prices were decent but I probably wouldnt recomend this place to a friend or probably go here again. read more

The food here is excellent, fresh and diverse. The coffee and baked goods are greats accompaniments to the menu and I would highly recommend taking some home with you if your already eating an entree. The one star off is because of the limit amount of space this cafe has. It is very popular with the locals and as such the space should be much larger than it is. Prepare to wait on a line and be squeeze into a small area to eat, the tables size are most like what you would find in an elementary school classroom, the only way you are saved is if you come in a group of 3 you are given the option of a large booth, otherwise id advise not to come here with large bags or more than 4 people. When I brunch I tend to brunch in the city, but I woke up in New Jersey, so New Jersey is where I brunched. (That sounds so pretentious. I'm sorry.) At any rate, it was a decent brunch. Points for the cute cafe atmosphere, cheaper-than-Manhattan prices, speed of coffee refills, and my friend's chai. The food was pretty average, though. I had the salmon benedict and it was tasty but not special. And that pretty much described the rest of my group's food, too. A solid breakfast/brunch place with standard menu options makes it easy for everyone to find something they like, so despite the slight crowdedness, I'd recommend it for groups. To be fair I'll say it's been quite some time since I visited Bluestone, but being a foodie and bonafide breakfast lover (not to mention someone who likes to patronize independently-owned shops as opposed to the franchises that have worked to slowly all but eradicate the sweet novelty of the "café experience"), I was excited about trying this place out. We were a party of five and after waiting a few short minutes sort of crammed in a corner amidst the hustle and bustle, we were crammed into a booth. After the folks we were there to meet had raved about this place, I was excited, so I reserved any judgment until I'd experienced the food and service. Well, neither met my expectations. Our waiter was devoid of any personality and seemed thoroughly disinterested in general. The food? Mediocre at best. Not impressed- I've made better Rosemary Potatoes at home, and the coffee? Realllly not impressed. For a place that's supposed to be known for its coffee, Bluestone falls quite short of a two thumbs up on the java scale. Sure, you can have your coffee freshly ground for purchase at the counter, and they have a selection of some exotic roasts, but these are things other coffee shops offer. I don't understand the hype. This place is too small to comfortably accommodate patrons and in light of the quality of the food and service, I don't intend on returning if I'm in the area. Simply, another overrated venue that will continue to thrive largely on account of an "affected" subculture. read more
