I really like Blue Mercury, including the people who work there (friendly and helpful) and the products sold (usually worth the extra $$). However, I stopped in this week to find a good, medium-weight foundation, and the Trish McEvoy rep who was visiting the story that day was incredibly pushy ("She should wear XXXX," she said in my direction, while barely glancing up from her victim) and dismissive. I've lived with my fair-yet-flushed skin, red hair and strawberry blonde eyebrows and lashes for 31 years, and I know what works for me. I'm interested in hearing other opinions, but I've definitely outgrown the suburban mall makeup counter makeover stage, and am not interested in subjecting myself to the whims of someone who doesn't even bother to listen to what I'm saying I want or need. It was this girl's dismissive behavior that really grated on me. A few examples: I say I prefer black/brown or brown mascara, contrary to current Avon lady wisdom. She says, laughing scoffingly: "If you're not wearing black, why bother?" She goes on, in a voice dripping with disdain: "No one even makes brown anymore. No one should be wearing it." She doesn't bother to ask, "Why do you prefer brown?" or even, "Have you tried black?" She doesn't know, and she doesn't care. I say I'm looking for a light-weight foundation for a very specific, minimal-use purpose. She says, in a tone that suggests she thinks I've just suggested (horrors!) skipping a bikini wax, "Why?" When I discover that the product I was eyeing is $75 and decide to go with something a bit more wallet-friendly, of course she changes her tune. "But you only need a drop! It'll last you a year. This product is great for you!" The Blue Mercury staff saved my visit. They were kind, responsive to the fact that I know my face better than they do, but also suggested other options in a helpful way that didn't seem intended to make me feel like I'm a 12 year old on my first trip to the drugstore counter. Sorry, Trish. I may look young (I guess my methods do work!) but that doesn't mean I'm clueless. read more

expensive, but everything i've bought here has been great. i have spent a ton of money looking for the right face power/foundation, and finally found it at bluemercury. i love the perfumes, and the shampoos they carry. read more

I only go into this Blue Mercury as it is convenient to where I work. Every time I go in there I am reminded how rude half the staff is. I walked in, (I was the only customer) and there were 3 people working there, not one said hello or asked if I could help.. That's fine, I don't like to be bombarded when I walk into a store either. However, after about 5 minutes looking for a certain nail polish color, the nasty women up front said "all the same colors are in the same row"- Um no they aren't which I told her and explained what I was looking for was mixed in with others. As someone that spends a fair amount (usually in other locations), I don't appreciate being treated this way. The store would be better off without the lady with the big bangs/ and dark hair (maybe Eastern European accent) who is there. She needs to go, not a good representation of Blue Mercury at all. read more

Admittedly, I have not been in this store in my neighborhood for a couple of years. Like the other reviews, the customer service at the front of the store is was rude and awful. I called the customer service line, but apparently it made no difference based on the recent reviews. It's a shame because the store is convenient and in my neighborhood, but I instead go to beauty 360 on the other side of the circle where the staff is super friendly and helpful and knowledgable of their products. While the products differ, I have been more than willing to adapt. After all, the main reason at least for me to go into a boutique and buy more expensive items, particularly make-up, is to try things on and get good help and ideas from customer service. That probably is what you are paying for in part after all. read more

Did a Brazilian here and it was honestly one of the more awkward experiences I've gotten. I think the nature of a Brazilian in general is just awkward so it helps to have a super friendly or relatively talkative waxer. I got an incredibly quiet waxer who had zero interest in brokering convo or responding to anything I said. Overall the wax was good I suppose and I appreciate the fact that I got some post-wax samples of goodies, but I'll likely go back to Elizabeth Arden or Cera before coming back here... read more

This place has lovely products, but the people who work here are cold and miserable human beings. I came here to buy a gift, and I guess I wasn't dressed up enough for the staff or something, because it took fifteen minutes to get anyone's attention on a dreary day when there were only three other customers. When someone did help me, she was very cold and short and didn't (or maybe couldn't?) answer my questions. I even bought something (!), and she and the other woman at the cash register wouldn't even look me in the eye. I got frosty vibes all the way around. Wouldn't go back here if someone paid me to. read more

Came here with my mom on a recent trip to DC and had a wonderful experience. Tanya is an amazing makeup artist with a knack for knowing exactly what her clientele wants to look like. It's like she instinctively knew my style, I didn't even have to tell her what kind of look I was going for. She gave me great tips and tricks and did my makeup better than anyone has ever done it before! She is not pushy with products at all--I felt very comfortable, and I'm a person that really hates sales pressure (who doesn't?). Tanya also did my mom's makeup made her look great--and my mom is NOT a makeup person. Loved this store, I walked out with products I felt great about and didn't feel pressure to buy. If you want to look amazing, have a fun experience, and buy some great products, go to Bluemercury and ask for Tanya! read more

Blue mercury is def the place to go for waxing. This review is specifically for the dupont circle location.I have had 5 brazilians waxings there with 4 different people. Good: I had almost always had a great experience- the ladies all using the hard blue wax and trying to make it as pain free as possible. I highly recommend Angelica. She spent time pulling out ingrown hairs and did a flawless job. Bad: This past time I had Krista. It was absolutely the worst experience I have ever had. She used waxing strips without even telling me or giving me the option to not have them used, as well as the hard wax which surprised me as I would have preferred to not have someone who uses the strips. She was sloppy, leaving wax all over me, especially in my butt crack, and rushed through everything creating an instant, more than normal, swelling all over my private area. To top it off, at the end of the appointment, she didn't even take the few seconds to clean me off. She pointed at a bottle I had never seen before and told me to use it to get the wax off. I figured I wouldn't need to use it as I have never had to before, but once I got up from the bed, I immediately felt my butt cheeks stick together because there was left over wax everywhere. I used the bottle to remove wax and when I did, I wiped my private area with a provided towel and when I looked at it I noticed some blood. I felt around and I was bleeding from a place where she had used the strips. I have never bleed before. I had to apply pressure to keep it from stopping. It was a terrible, painful, messy experience. Point: Blue mercury is awesome for brazilians. Make sure you don't have krista. read more

First off, to all the people that gave this store a bad review because they say the sales people aren't good....I couldn't disagree more and to be honest, those were probably one off experiences. In my experience, the service at blue mercury has always been superior to sephora or other beauty stores. I just started working down the street from this blue mercury location and every time I have gone in, sales people have been friendly, eager to help, and even give me samples of stuff when I am just browsing on my lunch break. I was in a pickle this past Friday when I was working late and had to be at a wedding by 4pm. I walked into the store, they hooked me up, Tanya did a BEAUTIFUL job on my makeup, and I didn't feel pressured to buy $1,000 worth of products. She listened to what I wanted, was able to do my makeup very quickly due to my time crunch, and even other people who were in the store shopping told me how great my makeup looked. Compared to MAC which now charges $50 for a makeup application, Blue Mercury doesn't charge, but as usual, you have to buy your favorite products they used. So bascially, free flawless makeup application! And with the great quality products in their store, it's a no brainer. *A short note: Southern Dupont location salespeople are not as friendly.... In short: TANYA DOES GREAT MAKEUP THE STORE HAS GREAT PRODUCTS HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED read more

We were in a bit of a crisis on Saturday because my friend was getting married and the place we hired to do her make-up failed in every way possible (ran out of time, had horrible old products and generally no skill whatsoever). So we headed to Bluemercury to see if they could help. Both Tanya and Lauren were amazing. Not only did they have a wonderful, calming vibe (much needed two hours before the wedding!) but they instilled confidence and made the bride (and me the bridesmaid!) feel beautiful and confident. With just a quick explanation they did our make up perfectly and suggested fantastic products without being sales-y at all. I will go back again and again to them. Really they saved the day! read more

This location has great customer service and a wide range of brands. Netsuhe worked with me to do a trial run of makeup for my wedding. She was very patient, knowledgeable, and fun to work with. I definitely recommend visiting her if you need advice on mixing and matching tones for your complexion! read more

Worst facial ever. I've had several facials in my life, including ones from Blue Mercury NJ locations. Save your money, don't go to this location for spa services. The associate basically applied a treatment then twiddled her thumbs until it was time to take it off. She even left the room for the last 10 min to fetch some product samples for me. For all I know, they were scooped from the public testers. I would've preferred she stay and do a proper facial service. I didn't get a proper service for the fee. Don't go here. Corporate will be notified. read more

Basically, I love their products and estheticians, but not their sales associates. I have been going to Bluemercury for about 3 years (for waxing and the occasional purchase) and never get any sort of recognition when I come in. They rarely make an effort to greet you or ask if you need help. I can't really say the same for their estheticians - they are all lovely and very good at their job. I have had very good waxing experiences here, but unfortunately the rest of the staff do not make you feel very warm or welcomed. Wish they would do something about this because this store could be a real gem. read more

Very impressed with their customer service. I had an allergic reaction to one eye cream and they allowed me to exchange even without receipt. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. read more

Had my eyebrows done by Heather. She's the newest of the estheticians, having started about 5 months ago. I had no idea the Dupont location had spa services, and since I'd had the best eyebrow wax of my life at Bluemercury in Georgetown a few summers ago, I thought I'd try this one out. She did a great job, listened to what I wanted (and more importantly, didn't want), and delivered. Although it's not the "best eyebrow wax ever" quality that I had in Georgetown, it is just fine! Very little pain, good shaping (I just want more of that perfect arch, which is hard to get), and she took the time to trim and tweeze to perfect the look. And she was super nice and talkative! Overall great experience and I'm definitely going back for more waxing services when the time comes. read more

I went to Brent who works with the Trish McEvoy make-up line at Bluemercury for my wedding makeup. Brent did an amazing job, and I highly recommend working with him for special-event make-up as well as every day make-up suggestions. Brent was fun to work with and he really listened to me and what I wanted to get out of the experience. I would happily go back to him anytime! read more

I was very pleased with the facial I had here this spring - it was wonderful, although the room is a bit snug. They have done a great job with my makeup before a special event, and the service is usually pretty good when I go to replenish my makeup bag. On the few rare occasions when I've returned something, it's been a easy process. read more

Am not surprised to see so many other reviewers rate this place for poor customer service--it confirms my experience over the past several years. I once wanted to buy some Mustela cream for a friend who'd just had a baby, but noticed the packaging was dirty and damaged so asked for a replacement. The salesguy rolled his eyes and told me that "actually, this is one of our lower-end items" ($40) and so I shouldn't expect decent packaging. He lost a sale. In general, the attitude is poor and the folks working here are not committed to service. I remember when it first opened years ago and was different. The Georgetown and Farragut locations employ much more professional and helpful folks. read more

Fabulous experience with Angelica. I highly recommend her for any waxing you may need. She was thorough, friendly, and extremely polite. I'll definitely be going back. read more

I went to Bluemercury on Connecticut Ave for an "eyebrow shaping." I left with an inch-long burn along the arch of my eyebrow where the technician had applied wax that was clearly overheated. When I called today to tell them the technician said that her wax is never overheated, that it must be some product I used before or after (Clinique gentle foaming cleanser and moisturizer, right), and to "put some neosporin on it." I don't have particularly sensitive skin and I've had my brows waxed many, many times and never had this happen. I will bring my burned face back there tomorrow to try to get my money back. read more

I am new to Washington D.C. and signed up for a facial with Blue Mercury at Dupont after a friend recommended the store. I have really bad skin and my dermatologist recommended to incorporate regular facials into my treatment regiment. My facial service was performed by Anjelica and I have never felt so comfortable and in better hands than with her. She explained what she was doing, why this particular approach, she made me feel special, and did an amazing job. I am writing this review because two weeks later my skin has never looked better. I still have breakouts, however, I finally feel that I am on the road to better skin. I can highly recommend this location read more

The crew at Bluemercury saved my wedding day. I was scheduled to get my hair and makeup done at a blow out place in the West End with my family and friends when things went terribly wrong. We ended up leaving the salon with my hair half done and no makeup. We stopped at Bluemercury, which was by our hotel and venue, and their staff went right to work on my bridesmaid and me. I was so grateful - they were kind and understanding and supportive and calming, helped us settle down. And the makeup was perfect. I wear very little makeup usually, and I showed them a picture of my dress, and they told me exactly what they were going to do, and I could not have been happier. I am so thankful for their kindness and the amazing job they did. I would highly recommend Bluemercury for all makeup needs. read more

This has been my go to cosmetic and toiletries store for at least 9-10 years without problems but the last three visits have prompted this review. All three times, the staff acted put out, rude, and tired. On the most recent occasion, the store manager didn't bother to even give me the "free" items that I had earned from my purchase. I caught that then she said they were out. Another salesperson corrected her and pointed out the pretty large shopping bag where they were sitting at the base of the checkout counter. (Thank you, sales lady.) Manager also told me she was too busy when I asked for items in stock, only to stand in the store for much of my substantial visit without helping anyone. On a previous visit, the person applying eye make-up at appointed time rushed through the appointment after telling me she wasn't supposed to be on the schedule for applications. (What does a customer do with this kind of info?) The unpleasant exchanges will influence me to try another Blue Mercury and even perhaps stop shopping there and going somewhere else entirely. Rather unfortunate since the DuPont store is the most convenient and my most frequented over the years. read more

I am a fan of the concept of this business. In addition, I can get all my Bobbi Brown essentials, Kiehl's and Bumble and Bumble products all in one place. It's sort of a smorgasbord of cosmetics and this girlie girl goes nuts with my budgeted amount for products. The last event I attended was a Bobbi Brown skin care event and the staff was welcoming, professional and kind. I love that they track your purchases in the system. If you were to forget the product's name from a previous purchase, it can be retrieved from the system. There's nothing worse than buying the wrong lipstick color, concealer or whatever to then have to make returns. I also agree with other reviewers that making appointments is not a problem. I give 5 stars because I don't have to trek to Georgetown or Pentagon for Sephora or the any other brand's flagship stores. The Dupont location brings everything to me: convenience is KING! read more

DON'T HAVE A FACIAL here! The store is very narrow, in an old building, which explains why the spa room where I had my facial is uncomfortably small, but not why it was stifling hot. Additionally, the spa room needs a renovation desperately. It looked tired and the bed slanted. When I made my first (and last) appointment I asked the store manager for an experienced esthetician; I have had monthly facials for years to manage my dry, sensitive skin. I was assured that everyone on staff was excellent. The esthetician assigned to me had less than four month's experience and wasn't prepared. She fumbled with the products and it felt as if she was practicing with me. She was nervous and had a hard time getting through the process. By the end of my facial I had to ask for a washcloth to remove the mask from a few areas of my face. A side note - they don't use steam which I wasn't told and should have been. I didn't feel as if my face had been cleaned at all when done, and it wasn't. In fact it was red - the heat? I used to purchase cosmetic products here but there has been a staff turnover in the past few months and I don't find that shopping here is a pleasant experience anymore. read more
