Everyone needs to go see the makeup artist, Nick, at this location. He made my day! I came into this location as a walk-in and told him what I needed done. I was on a time crunch and just needed my eyes done for headshots -- and I only had 20 minutes before I needed to go. He instantly made me feel so at ease even though it was obvious I was in a rush. He also did a great job of what I wanted, just a natural look. When I was getting ready to pay before leaving, he told me no worries- because the service was so short, he said I didn't need to pay. I love the lines carried at Blue Mercury - Trish McEvoy, NARS, Laura Mercier (there's more, but those are my favorite). The store is small, but well merchandised. However, the staff is awful. They are completely unfriendly, arrogant, and not helpful in any way. And the national make-up artists that visit are worse (though, that's not the store's fault; all national make-up artists are stuck up). And if you just want to play with colors or try a new look and not buy, forget it. You are completely ignored and given nasty looks. I try not go here unless I need something urgently, which is too bad, because I love the store. But the associates are so awful that I try to avoid at all costs. read more

In San Francisco, when I wanted to cheer myself up I'd flee my cube on the 22nd floor and bound down to Maiden Lane to buy myself a candle from Diptyque. When I moved to Washington, DC I brought with me a stash of these sumptuous candles. Though DC doesn't have a dedicated Diptyque shop (outside of Paris there are only two - Boston and San Francisco), I was pleased to find these indulgent candles not far from home at Bluemercury. The next time I need a pick me up I'm heading here for my Diptyque fix. And hey maybe I'll even branch out from my favorite scent Oyedo and try Baies, Menthe Verte, Mexican Orange Blossom or Feu de Bois! read more

I had an incredible facial with Tisha. She is extremely knowledgeable and gives you so much great information. I was extremely appreciative that she really listened to what I was looking for and interested in and not only tailored my facial to focus on that but also made some fantastic product recommendations. She didn't just say to buy the entire line of one company to push product. She recommended bits from one line and parts of another based on what would suit my skin best. She also answered 500 questions and was incredibly gracious about me chatting away the whole time she was trying to do extractions and apply masks. Speaking of the actual facial, she did an excellent job with that too. She is clearly a skilled esthetician. I highly recommend her and blue mercury as a whole. It was an enjoyable experience and facial. I will definitely be returning to see Tisha again. read more

I have been a repeat customer for many many years, particularly with their holiday party deal. In addition I shop throughout the year to get stuff I run out of. However the last 3 times I was not given/offered samples which is advertised on their site - the big jar is right there! Feeling fat? Head here because they'll make you feel INVISIBLE. I work across the street from this store and have been in exactly twice. Once I went in looking for some new eye makeup. I walked into the store and over to the Nars products. I milled around for a few minutes and not now one person asked if they could help me. So I left and went to Bloomingdales in Chevy Chase. The woman at that counter was only too happy to take my money. And they have a better selection there too. Then last month I lost my favorite lip pencil, so I went in to pick up a replacement. I didn't have time to run up to Chevy Chase so I thought I'd give them another chance. As I expected I was ignored yet again. Most of the staff were giving some women makeovers, but there were two that were free. One one woman was "really busy" rearranging candles and another just standing at the register staring at me. Since I just stood there and stared at her, the woman at the register finally decided to ask if I needed help. WTF!! Of course I need help. Did she really think I was just standing in the middle of the store for my health? It's not as if you can just grab the makeup I want and walk up to the counter. She did finally get lip pencil that I wanted and I did purchase it. But I have to say I won't be returning to this store. The women at the Nars counters in Bloomingdales certainly don't make me stand around like an idiot and are happy to take my money. My boss has been to the store a few times as well so I asked her about her experiences and she agreed that the staff is awful. No one wants to be attacked when they enter a store, but they could at least ask you if you would like some help. read more

Blue Mercury carries everything I ever wanted in a beauty supply/make-up/perfume place. Almost everything. Bliss, Bumble and Bumble, Terax, Kiehl's, Frederic Fekkai, Dermalogica......did I mention Bliss and Kiehl's??? In the way of make-up, there is Trish McEvoy, and for perfumes, there is Creed and L'Artisan Parfumeur (yes, they did have La Chasse aux Papillons - my favorite). They also carry a wonderful selection of Tocca and Diptyque candles. Expensive, yes, but no more expensive than the same thing sold at other places. Blue Mercury also offers a range of spa treatments. The service was great, and Gina even gave me some more samples of La Chasse with my purchase, not that I even purchased that much. 4.5 Stars. read more

I originally loved coming to buy makeup here. In 2010 I did a makeup lesson with Jessica Lucente, at that time the manager of the store, who did not try to sell me products but instead create a look for me that I would wear for years to come. However, Blue Mercury laid off Jessica and it seems that the store has suffered. I went in December 2010 to buy a number of products and had to ask at the counter if anyone could help me. Meanwhile, three makeup artists were standing by and acting unprofessional. One of the staff was checking her phone and doing her makeup. Empty packaging for products lay strewn across one of the walls. It felt very unprofessional and I do not plan to come back. read more

Do they only hire rude people? I stepped into the store last night and was greeted monotonously by an obviously tired employee. I wanted to look for a strong moisturizer for my dry winter skin. The gentleman took me straight to the M-61 Bluemercury Skincare Product Line instead of offering me advice on the Dermalogica product I originally wanted. It just seems like they are pretty obviously trying to sell their brand to their customers. I was not impressed and proceeded to go ahead and purchase what I wanted originally. The salesperson at the register was really rude,cold and hardly smiled or made eye contact with me. Worst customer service. I've gone in twice to make a quick purchase of some Bobbi Brown products. I knew exactly what I wanted to buy, I just needed an associate to help me locate the products and check me out. The first time, every associate in the place was too busy milling around and socializing to assist anyone. I had to stand at the register for 5 minutes before I could get any assistance. I thought, I'll give them one more chance. I went in on Tuesday and there were three associates working. Two associates were helping a woman select a lipstick color, great, but it doesn't take two people to assist one person. Again, I had to loiter around the register to get help. The male associate looked up and asked if I needed help, he's rather observant. I said yes, and he said well help yourself and I'll get to you when I can. Really, I'm spending money in your store when I could just purchase online. The second associate, who was eating a lollipop AT WORK finally pulled herself away from just standing and found the powder I was looking for after initially pulling the wrong product. Blue Mercury has a very limited, but high quality, selection of cosmetics lines. They carry Nars, Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, and Trish McEvoy. These cosmetics lines have their own salespeople working in the store, so you never know who you're going to encounter and what line you'll have pushed on you when you walk in. Once I was consulted by the Bobbi Brown lady, another time the Laura Mercier lady. They are very generous with samples and want to help with product recommendations (from their own lines, of course). All of their products are quite good, but definitely not cheap. Had a pleasant eyebrow wax experience as well. They have spa services available (quite pricey). read more

Blue mercury is a good store overall, but this particular location is a bit iffy. I have been here a few times - the merchandise selection is good, but service is unpredictable. Sometimes it's attentive to the point of being pushy. Other times you can't get an associate to pay attention to you or get you the samples you need - very dismissive and borderline rude behavior. My roommate and I stopped by Blue Mercury last week for a quick lipgloss revamp and emerged looking like straight-up Hollywood starlets. -- My beauty regiment is generally simple because my face has historically been a "tale of woe": round, moon-shaped face; plump, lopsided mouth; massive under-eye bags and the like. I was too clumsy to do my own eyeliner (which would, in an hour's time, end up a black smear across my lids anyway) and did not even know how to use mascara. Thank you Tanya, resident Blue Mercury make-up artist, for teaching me the glory and salvation that is the eye-liner pen! Now, with the pen, an ounce of primer, Tanya's perfectly curated eye-shadow palette, and some contouring bronzer, I have entered a no-fail 15-minute-make-up Enlightenment Age. It may as well be the label in the store window, because that's the slant these guy's are going for: chic and extravagant women's products---that elusive search for Youth in a Bottle. My personal favorite item was a satin-ribboned box of "Eau de Toilette" with its name letterpressed in gold-leaf: "Cannabis," it said. If that's not enough, they also have a therapeutic bath oil called "Rice." What's the secret to your healthy skin? Cannabis and Rice. What's the next big thing for New York's hottest spas? Peanuts? Oh boy I don't know where to start here. I had a pretty bad experience. Asking for help with an announcement for who had some time to spend with me when I walked in was a bad idea because it caused all the salespeople to scatter like frightened hamsters. The Trish McEvoy rep is horrendous- you'll know her because she will try to sell you ONLY Trish McEvoy regardless of what you are shopping for- so stay away from her. You'll also know her right away when you feel you are educating her on skin care instead of vice versa. In fact, sidenote: those salespeople are reps for individual companies, not for Blue Mercury (I don't know if BM even has their own BM reps) so make sure you talk to several people to see what each line has to offer. The worst part was I wanted to return an item and none of the salespeople could explain why they have a store credit only policy. I contacted Corporate and they listened in a really concerned way to my suggestions and are in fact implementing employee trainings on both product knowledge and store policies and a few other changes. The really redeemed themselves. I made the effort to call because I could have gone to CVS and spent $140 but I knew that they were really about customer service so I gave them the benefit of the doubt and they responded beautifully. The great things are that they have events like makeup application and product knowledge workshops and offer samples of items before you take the plunge to buy something. I give three stars at this point until I go back and have another encounter soon. ______________________________ I went back a few weeks later and met with Arika, the head Esthetician. She was FAB-U-LOUS! She knows everything about skin care and was so energetic and positive- she recommended everything I do and, more importantly, everything I DON'T need. I now give them 4 stars. 4.5 I've walked in here a few times in sweaty gym gear and have been ignored. On Saturday when I walked in for my appointment (more on this later), I was dressed very casual-chic and was toting a $2,000 YSL bag...so perhaps that is why I had 3 sales girls come up to ask me if I needed anything (even after I checked in for my appt). I had mixed feelings about my first visit here to this store based on what a friend or two had said about the salestaff being unfriendly. It turns out that I was impressed that the sales staff, who were very knowledgeable not just about the products themselves, but also how to apply them, and they were generous with sharing that information with me. My only reservation was that the staff was preoccupied with stocking the shelves as I was telling them about what I was after. There was another staff in the store at the time, and there was one other customer who seemed to have it under control, so the lack of eye contact was a turn off-- there was no acknowldgement. In any case, I was satisfied with the info I got. It's probably a bad thing that I realized how much cool stuff they had in there. I've never used the spa services, but Bluemercury has become my new go to place for buying skincare products and makeup. The staff is very helpful and friendly and seems to genuinely enjoy being there. I needed tinted moisturizer and the Lauea Mercier lady was very patient in helping me find the right match. After finding the right tinted moisturizer for me, she treated me to a full Laura Mercier makeover. Sales tactic or not, I was happy with the extra "non-pushy" service. I ended up buying just the tinted moisturizer. I also always appreciate the free samples they give out. The last time I was there they gave me a sample of Laura Mercier lotion that I have been using for nearly a month. I love that this place also has a large selection of Clinique items. I love Clinique skin care products and the sales ladies are great about explaining the products and providing recommendations. read more

I have gotten 3 facials there and they were all great! Most recently I had facial, waxing and a make up lesson all to get ready for my wedding. John did an amazing job on my make up! I felt so pretty. I had other trials at other places and i didn't like how I looked, he listened to what i wanted and I loved it!! Heather waxed me and gave me an amazing faicial with tips on how to keep my skin healthy. I loved her! I work in the industry so I feel like i know good when I get it and I totally got it! Go to get my makeup done for events! It is free to get done, they just request that you buy 3 items!! It is amazing because they teach me as they make me look beautiful!! Tonya was wonderful and I always feel beautiful at the end! Don't shop here! I had received a gift card that I tried to use online and was not able to use because it says: "This code does not match an active gift card". I went to the store and explained the situation, they gave me a new one that doesn't work either, same error. They told me to call the back of the card to fix this issue if it still persisted, but that phone just ended up being an automated call where they tell you your card balance... I initiated an online chat and after an hour we got disconnected. I was not able to reinitiate contact. A waste of time. read more

What has happened to the management of BM? This store is a disaster. I have been going to this store for 10 years. It has been my local "go-to" for high end stuff. Within the last 2 years, it has really gone downhill -- fast. The sale help has become unhelpful, dismissive and untrained about their most expensive products. Where are they getting these sales people? At a time when all the other stores are offering samples of expensive face products to try, this store no longer gives or make samples of products you would like to test, .... even though the website indicates otherwise. I just had an amazing experience at Bluemercury. They were so kind and helpful. I needed something for my wife and had to match a shade of a product that has not been sold in this area for years. I mentioned the brand and a rough description of the color. Not only did the person at the store know the brand and the product but also the exact color and was able to get me an exact replacement (my wife said the color matched the old one exactly). I feel that Blue Mercury needs to two separate reviews, one for the waxing/spa services and one for the storefront services. But I guess I'll just give you two paragraphs. 1. The waxing/spa services are outstanding. I have funky eyebrows that require a real expert and Angelika has been doing them since I moved to DC 8 months ago and she has done an outstanding job. She is professional, kind, and gets the job done. She also listens to what I need as a client. The other women who do services (whom I have used when Angelika is not available) are also very good. 2. The storefront is atrocious. Every time I walk in there I feel the people working there are treating me like they are doing me a favor by even looking at me. Their attitude is that "you should be grateful that I'm gracing you with my presence." The last time I walked in to make an appointment as I was pulling my BB to look at my schedule the woman literally walked away while I was talking to her asking her what appointment were available. Excuse me? The next time I went to check in to my appointment another one of the young women working there simply looked at me while I spoke to her and without a word made a face and turned around while rolling her eyes. I'm not sure if there is a standard to enter this establishment and get service but I certainly do not meet it based on the service they provide. I refuse to buy any of their products due to their horrendous service and attitude. The thought of any of these rude people getting any money (my hard earned cash) from my purchases upsets me so much I rather pay a shipping fee and order online than buy anything from them. All in all, if you need a beautiful wax go here. You will love their services, but put on an armor because in order to get to the back where they have the spa services you first have to dodge the eye-rolls, gum chewing, obnoxious front of the store staff. Not impressed! Situation: I made the last minute decision to attend a film screening post work. All of a sudden my "just good enough for work hair" wasn't good enough. Fortunately I keep a bottle of Ojon dry shampoo in my desk drawer for just such occasions (side note: it's amazing for busy folks who make spontaneous post work plans and frequent snooze button users but I digress). Unfortunately it happened to be empty. Solution (or not...) : A quick trip to nearby Blue Mercury. I'm a fan of the Georgetown location which is my go-to for Bobbie Brown since Sephora doesn't carry the brand. Anyway they were out of Ojon which is fine, it happens. The store carries a lot of quality brands and I would have gladly purchased a different one... had the sales woman not pointed to the only two other brands of dry shampoo and said "They are the same thing, they are both spray" "Well then which one is better?" "It doesn't matter they're both dry shampoo" "If it doesn't matter then why should I buy one?" *blank stare* Returned to the office following my first, last, and only visit to this location and put my hair in a ponytail.... read more

I see several reviews here about rude and indifferent service and decided to add my comments. In all the years the shop (1619 Connecticut Ave near Dupont Circle) has been open, I've never had anyone greet me, offer to help me, tell me what samples I may have earned, thanked me for my purchase (!!!) -- nothing. I have vowed not to shop there even though it is close to my office and my home so it is very conveniently located. Last week, however, I was in a rush and went in for a specific product. I was amazed -- again -- at the lack of service and the general attitude of the salespeople. Amazed! They couldn't have been less interested in my business. As a footnote, the Blue Mercury shop further down Connecticut Avenue (near M Street) provides a completely different experience. You would never tell but I am a beauty junky. I spend way too much money on makeup, lotions and potions considering how much I actually wear them. Well I do wear the lotions and potions but the makeup not so much. Blue Mercury has all my favorite brands and some wonderful perfumes. I prefer it to Sephora because it is smaller, and more specialized. The size also means they cater to their customer and they have my number in their book in case my lipstick, or dark navy blue Laura Mercier liner comes in. They also have great makeup artists and reps on hand if you want to get your make-up done. read more

To the very attractive homosexual man who thought using a bronzer and face tanning lotion on an Indian girl was a good idea. It wasn't. I had to turn up for an early morning meeting looking like a Jersey Shore cast member. Other than that, I really like this store. I think the customer service here has improved over the years. They aren't snooty by make-up store standards, and carry specialized products that are hard to find elsewhere. I love their bins full of travel sized products which I used to stock up on during my perpetually- on-the-road days, and still need for stashing in my gym bag. And besides that one terrible Snooki experiment, they're generally really good at make-up application and have great product recommendations, especially for folks like me who do not want to spend much time getting primped up on weekday mornings. P.S. - If you're looking for those amazing yet sadly overpriced Jo Malone or Diptique candles, Blue Mercury always has them in stock. read more
