Was on a short family vacation to Banff in June 2024, and saw that Bluebird had prime rib, so had to stop in. We made early reservations and when we arrived we were greeted by a friendly receptionist that showed us to a great table for our small group of three (out of the way, but great people watching spot). Our server (and I apologize for not remembering her name...she was from Ottawa and moved out to Banff to ski) was cheery and welcoming. We ordered some house drinks that were tasty and strong. Marni (my significant other) was very concerned about the dress code for Bluebird prior to heading out. Based on looking at previous reviews, and speaking to the locals in town, it seemed that Bluebird was rather a dressing spot. I guess it's all relative but I don't believe it could be further from the truth. There were certainly couples dressed nicely with collard shirts and skirts, but many others mixed in with hiking pants and boots, or casual shorts and flip flops. Certainly not a place you need to wear your Sunday best. Jeans and a t shirt would have been fine. After drinks we ordered some salads. Marni and her mom split the Butterleaf salad, and I had a plain Caesar (no crab). I asked for the dressing on the side, but the salad was delivered by the kitchen staff with an exorbitant amount of dressing mixed into the salad. Our server came over to check in on us, and immediately noticed the dressing and said that she'd have a new salad made up for me right away (point for the server). Onto dinner....we each ordered prime rib. Marni and her mom ordered the classic cut, but I selected the larger Bluebird cut. Overall, the opinion at the table was mixed. It's kind of hard to screw up prime rib. It's rib roast with salt and pepper. The issue seemed to be that some of the pieces were overcooked. Good quality meet, but the chef that night may not have been on his game this night with timing. The killer for this restaurant was the sides. Not just the sides, but the staff's response to the sides. We ordered a side of broccolini and a side of oyster mushrooms. Two stapes when you are eating steak. When the two sides were delivered to the table, the appearance of both was great. The broccolini was charred perfectly. However, both sides had an overwhelming amount of garlic that just overpowered each dish. They were inedible (and I don't think that is a strong enough word to describe what it was like to try these sides). The amount of garlic in those two sides ruined the entire meal. So...here I am between a 2-3. Drinks were good, atmosphere wasn't great for what we expected from all we read, service so far was good, and food was OK. The kicker to a 2 from a 3 was when our server asked how the food was and I stated that the broccolini and mushrooms were inedible due to the amount of garlic, she responded that she'd "let the chef know." I chose this place for an anniversary dinner because of reviews. Unfortunately, our experience was abysmal at best. Started out strong with a friendly and witty server. We just didn't see her again (it looked like she got pulled behind the bar). There were four in our party. Sides came out first with 2:4 main dishes. We had to ask someone (not our server) where the other two steaks were after 5 minutes of waiting. The mashed potatoes were a good flavor but both orders came out cold. One was returned to warm it up and it came out lukewarm in a dish warmer than the food. Someone came by (not our server) asking if we wanted the dessert menu and he came back 10 minutes later. Service felt disjointed. Carrots and the wine were the best items we ordered. Ribeye was chewy. Quality of food and service was not worth the price. read more

I couldn't decide between the prime rib and the bone-in rib eye, but our waitress Christine convinced me that the sear was worth it. We celebrated my husband's 65th birthday at Bluebird, and we are so pleased that we did. We were warmly greeted and, at our request, were seated outside, even though our reservation had been for inside. They gave my husband a birthday card personally signed by staff; he was touched. Our server, Kate, gave us wonderful recommendations (just do what she says; she's got you). She and Johnnie, her co-server, checked on us in appropriate intervals, which we appreciated. Kate highly recommends the key lime pie. Again, just do it. She served it with a birthday candle for my husband. Ahh. A splendid experience during our vacation. Service - okay Food - okay Ambience - nice and cozy Wait - significant wait for food to arrive Bluebird's menu has good variety and the ambience of the restaurant has a cozy upscale cabin vibe. Noise level was okay, which is surprising given that much of the seating is close together. Service was okay - not great but not terrible. We ordered a cheese fondue for an appetizer followed by steak, pasta and prime rib for our mains. Sides were cauliflower, brussel sprouts and cheese mashed potatoes. The fondue and the mains were okay, but I'd give a pass on the brussel sprouts and cauliflower as both were over roasted and had a propane taste. The biggest issue, however, was the amount of time it took for our courses. We sat at 615, received our fondue at 7 and our mains at 750. The restaurant wasn't too busy, so probably some kinks in the kitchen to work out. We skipped desert there and went elsewhere to round out our meal. I would recommend that you ask for everything to arrive at once and not stagger your meal. We will probably look elsewhere next time we are in town. read more

My wife and I really had a great time at Bluebird! I am not kidding when I say this is one of the best hamburgers I have ever had. It was so flavorful and cooked to perfection. The fries are also very good, as well as the salad's. We came for lunch right we we arrived so we really were happy to see when Bluebird was next door to our hotel as that was one of our destination restaurants we wanted to go to on our trip. We opted for still water and she proceeded to go over the menu. She was super pleasant and very attentive to our needs and water glasses were always full. Despite the exceptional food, what most stood out was the exceptional service, the cherry (rhubarb) on the (pan)cake that made the whole experience an absolute joy. The dishes are disappointing. The crabs caecer salad got a fishy smell in it. The onions soup, tastes like pan washing water, something burnt and with a strong sour taste. Also I took one of the 20oz steak, they used opened flame so even I asked for a medium cooked steak the surface still looks like a piece of charcoal. And it took a long time for the this steak ready, I really felt starving to wait for it even after I ate some salad. Even without the burnt surface I can't taste anything but BITTER, if u want a piece of steak take the small ones. Stopped at Bluebird around 4:30 PM after a long hike, in need of a good meal to fuel back up. The ambiance inside is really beautiful and cozy, it felt like the perfect escape from the cold. To our surprise it was happy hour, so we ordered drinks and burgers off the happy hour menu. That made the meal much more affordable. There was nothing amazing about the drinks and the burgers were good but not special - I think if I had paid the full prices, I would've been disappointed (the happy hour price of the burger and fries was $13 instead of the usual $28). Our cocktails were $8.50 and $11 respectively, instead of the usual $18 and $17.25. The rosemary parm fries were worth it, however, and the burger meat had great flavor. I wouldn't stop by unless you want to spend $50+ each on their more signature choices like the steak or fondue. Staff was friendly and attentive but I don't think I'd go back unless it was a special occasion. read more

An hour and a half after we arrived and ordered we had to ask where our food was. Then she didn't even bring it out. Others did. Can't rate the food as it was cold by the time we got it. For what you are paying, the food and service is simply ok. Both the steak and my mashed potatoes came out Luke-warm. I returned both of them, and they brought the steak back to my table way before the mashed. I even had to complain by asking where my mashed potatoes were. So basically. My steak was like an appetizer and my mashed were the main course. This normally wouldn't be a massive deal, but I'm racking up a $220.00 tab with food alone, and you pay extra for all sides. The béarnaise sauce tasted funky as well. I didn't know who was really serving us as the manager came over more often than who was our server, and the restaurant was not busy. On the positive side, the place did have good ambiance. The staff seemed friendly enough. The vibe was alright, but overall, the food was simply meh. As for steakhouses, you get more bang for your buck at The Keg. Which is unfortunate as I try to stay away from chain restaurants. read more

Their French onion soup & caesar salad are fantastic! We told the management we didn't like their pasta, but did nothing to compensate for our dislike. At least take it out of our bill, free dessert or something. Another, our server was pushy on getting our water on the table. Overall, this restaurant is not worth a 5-star review.
