Fried Tofu with Fish Purée
Andrew W.

All things considered, this type of "Hong Kong Style" street food is not easy to get outside of Hong Kong as the varieties of toppings for the "Cart Noodles" requires extra time for each items to be made to perfection, and this is not an easy task even in Hong Kong. In North America, Vancouver in particular in Richmond we are lucky to have a few entries that offers this type of food culture. After a few years of giving up trying, I finally ventured into Block 18. This is the same location as the previous Cart Noodle shop that as been here for a few years after they moved from Aberdeen Centre. The current occupant did a refresh of the interior and is more inviting, still keep the feel of a canteen type place but this is exactly what it should be, casual and friendly. The service here is outstanding compare to many other places be it fast food or not, one of the gentlemen was particularly attentive, he would ask for our input and feed back of the items we ordered. He is also very knowledgeable of the cooking method and I can feel that he is very meticulous about the way each item is prepared. Highlight of the food items: Pork Rind : perfect texture, very well seasoned, one of the best in town! 4 stars Curry Fish Balls : as authentic as you can get outside of HK, slightly spicy, good on its own or you can have it as a topping on you noodles. 4 stars Fried Tofu with Fish Puree : size in smaller then other places, but I actually prefer this over the larger ones, as this gives the tofu to have the better texture when fried and the fish puree / tofu ratio becomes more balanced. 4 stars Fried Chicken Wings : Their version is not as gingery then the ones we are accustomed to but the fact that it has less flour coating is a plus, its also less salty, but is still very juicy inside. I would suggest some Chinese Seasoned Salt on the side. 3 stars As I started at the beginning, with all things considered to have Cart Noodle in N. America is already a plus and to have the quality pretty close to what we can get nowadays in HK is a pure treat!

Location - good There are parking stalls right next to the restaurant. Quite convenient Ambience - good It is a very Hong Kong style type of interior design. Even the TV shows are Hk ones in Cantonese. Food - great All the food on the menus are very authentic. The flavour of the food that we ordered was delicious. Not too salty or too much MSG. I didn't feel thirsty after eating the food. The HK milk tea was similar to the one that I had in HK. Customer service - great The owners are also the chef and server. They were very caring and making sure all customers got what they needed. They were also friendly that they chatted with customers. One recommendation: instead of using plastic cups and containers, they should use the actual bowls and cups. It's more environmental friendly. I would like to try other dishes if I come back here next time.

They get the A-OK from me. This is called 車仔麵 with out the 車. A HK staple type of food, "invented" in HK. A-la-carte noodles without the cart. Or alternatively: 車仔麵走車 Given the huge Asian population in the lower mainland, I'm surprised there's not too many cart noodles places around. Unless I'm mistaken, this is the only stand alone cart noodle shop that calls itself 車仔麵. The rest are in Asian food courts and there's not that many compared to any other Asian noodle houses which are a dime a dozen. Cantonese, Northern Chinese, Taiwanese, Shanghainese, Viet pho (pronounced as fuh, like DUH!), and a plethora of Japanese ramen. Pick your noodle Pick your toppings Pick your sauce Pick sides if you want Pro tip: Pick a sauce. The broth that the noodles come with is a standard neutral broth. I went with a beef brisket broth. Very reasonable prices. One more thing. A Cantonese place where the owners were extremely polite and cordial. W.T.F??? This is a first. I don't think I've ever had this experience before from a Canto joint. Easy repeat if I'm in the mood for this again.

New HK cart noodle restaurant on Alexandra. Friendly and welcoming staff. You choose your noodles, sauce, and toppings ($7 for 2/$8 for 3/$9 for 4). The soup base is the same for all the noodles; you just pour in your chosen sauce to flavour it up. There is also a decent selection of side dishes, like fried chicken wings/legs, vegetables, etc. Prices for HK drinks here are pretty good compared to HK cafes in the area, but at the time of our visit, there was no option to add a drink or snack to the soup as a combo. Everything is purchased separately. The broth was pretty good. Noodles were typical and nothing special. Portion sizes of the noodles and toppings were small. The chicken wings were fried well (juicy inside, crispy outside) but lacked flavour. The fried chicken leg used a different batter and wasn't as good. I prefer the wings and side dishes at Wo Fung Noodle on Park Road (another HK cart noodle place). What I don't like about this place is that even though it's an eat-in restaurant, they still use disposable plastic and styrofoam for almost everything (bowls/plates/non-water cups/spoons). I felt like I was eating at the food court with so many one-time-use products in front of me. I get that it's cart noodles, but it's still an actual restaurant and this amount of waste really isn't needed. I hope they at least recycle the plastic bowls and cutlery, but all the styrofoam plates are just landfill city. Maybe it's a temporary situation since they just opened...

whats not to love about this place? i think they afe the best representation of hk hawker noodles in richmond. ive read about this thru yelp and i just had to go try it. for price, food quality, and serving...5 stars for sure! the brisket beef and sauce are amazing. when combined with noodles...wow! ultimate comfort food. for a mere 7.5 you get a 2 topping noodles soup of your choice. i tried the beef brisket and wonton...wife tried the beef brisket and curry fish balls. wow! spot on, let me tell ya. tender beef chunks in rich hoisin sauce. fish balls done right and not mushy, and despite being in the soup, retained their curry identity. another good thing is the soup base of the cart noodle didnt taste like bland sewer water. care was actually given in preparing this simple yet delicate broth. it was clear and flavourful. provided a nice canvass to the masterpiece that will be painted on it. the fired cuttlefish balls were yummy. larger than most places, each one was plump and delectable and perfectly coated in panko. inside was juicy and not not dry. the chicken wings were equally amazing. nicely coated in 5 spice powder and potato starch and fried to golden juicy perfection. best chinese chicken wings ever. i like it better than the famous viet/cambodian wings in east van. hk drinks galore here as well. although noodle combos dont come with a drink option, they are reasonably priced and you get a large cup. for drinks, iced lemon tea and ice lemon ribena with 7-up! so refreshing. brings back memories of dining on the street stalls in hk. i will be back for sure and try the other toppings. simple and no frills place for a quick and delicious meal without breaking the bank. service is quick and efficient. only 1 guy speaks english here though. lol. he takes orders and operates the till. order taking is simple enough with a paper and pen, just check and check. everything is nicely translated on paper. cheers! happy eating!

HK Style Cart food you'd find in Hong Kong but you can eat it indoors! The concept isn't really new as the predecessor here moved over to a bigger location. Still the variety although similar has its own differences and that's a good thing. So why come here? Well parking can be better and they have some different styles of chicken wings. My worry is that they can maintain the quality which doesn't seem to be a problem. I do like the difference in variety so it's worth coming here for that. I like how they did the interior. Friendly service too.

-Traditonal Hong Kong Snacky Goodness- For decent value, strong focus on its model, and keeping that Hong Kong feel alive. Milk Tea While I'm no expert in saying what is traditional and what isn't, I was told this place has pretty traditional Hong Kong style Milk tea where they pull the tea and use a sieve to filter the tea. It's true, the tea is pretty traditional and tastes great. We asked for less sugar to really get the tea flavours pop. And it delivers. Also it's fairly cheap which is great value. Fried chicken A light golden skin envelopes the hidden meat streaming with juices pouring out. Kind of impressive in a way. Curry fish balls Several mini fish balls nestled together in a plastic bowl. The curry isn't too spicy; it's more of a savoury affair. Deep fried cuttle fish balls This came as a freebie if you post on social media. It's airy and got a bit of an outer crisp. Decent. Cart noodle My Life choices: thin noodle, curry sauce for the broth, beef brisket, wonton, Vietnamese ham. It also comes with some veggies as part of the dish. Overall, the flavours are different from each other and pair well with the soup broth which is pretty decent on its own. There's a stunning sensation when you have to decide what toppings to choose from. The choices are biased towards meat, with veggie options are next to absent. Bad for people that prefer veggies. But good for basically anyone else. Cart Noodles are inherently junk foodish in its composition. So Embrace your inner fattie.

Snow White (Vanilla ice cream on top of 7-up)
Billie L.

Most new restaurants usually have a dish or two that might make you contemplate if you should give them a second chance. BUT this restaurant, Block 18 Cart Noodle, was amazingly good! Nothing beats good drinks like Snow White (Vanilla ice cream in 7-up) or Black Bull (vanilla ice cream in coke) that gives you nostalgic childhood memories. Or even the Iced Lemon Ribena with 7-up that reminds you of good old HK! I expected the Iced HK Milk Tea and Iced Coffee to be the same as others but it was surprisingly good. It was not watered down nor overly sweetened. The appetizers were top notch! Been dying to try the deep fried cuttlefish ball after seeing pictures of it. The cuttlefish ball was big and the batter was the right crispy texture. The deep fried chicken wings were absolutely bigger and juicier than anywhere! The shrimp in deep fried shrimp wonton was a pretty generous size. The vegetable dish, Kai Lan with oyster sauce, may seem typical but it was a good add on. It was not over cooked or dripping with water like how you would find in most places. Overall the appetizers were amazing and I could not choose one to complain about rather I look forward to ordering them again and know I will be satisfied! Soup noodles! Nothing beats a good broth! This restaurant does not use powdered msg chicken stock. In fact, their soup is bone boiled broth. We had the spicy sauce, satay sauce, and beef brisket sauce. All three were such good compliments to the broth that we could not help but drink up the soup. Noodles of choice was plentiful. We could not finish it! You can tell by the portions and sizes of everything that this restaurant is not about skimping out! Even though it was a busy Thursday night, the service was still friendly and they were able to address our needs in a timely manner. I also have to add what I found interesting, very creative and well thought out about in this restaurant. There are table booths in the middle of the restaurant. Underneath the table counter they have a shelf that looks like a planter box but it's actually designed for patrons to put their purses and jackets in there making eating so much more comfortable. Definitely a satisfied, happy and returning customer!

This is a small restaurant where you can customize order soup noodles. There is also a small drink and snack section. I ordered a $7 two topping bowl (marinated egg and wontons with flat rice noodles) and added an iced lemon tea. I also added spicy sauce to the bowl and it was actually spicy! Food arrived fairly quickly. The portion size was good for an average eater. However, for big eaters this might not be enough and you would have to order a side of chicken wings or another snack. I am noticing that a lot of Richmond restaurants like to use take out containers for dine in customers. I find it environmentally unfriendly.

New peppery wings

A very Hong Kong style 'cart noodle' stall that tries to stay true to the original flavour while rolling out new items here/there. I ordered rice noodle with four toppings, a side of brisket sauce and an order of new deep fried chicken wings (not the signature one). Overall, I like it. Their broth is not overly sweet or salty, just a good clear broth balance. My rice noodle was good, not stuck together/mushy, a good fluff. Toppings of beef tripe, fish cake edge, and cabbage and raddish/daikon were pretty good - daikon was a good highlight, stewed to moist and soft; and tripe were good-chewy and firm, freshly stewed. Daikon is always a must! The beef brisket sauce was packed with flavour from all the fat and juice from the stewed briskets, a bit sweet and savory with spice, this really adds a good punch to the bowl of noodle. Only thing was here/there I forgot about the brisket sauce sitting on the side, so I ended up not using it efficiently. I personally prefer just dashing it onto my bowl of noodle rather than dipping the toppings in it. Instead of their signature wings, I tried a new wing item on display, don't remember the name but it was peppery, coated with sesame, I think with cumin too. On its own - fairly good. The batter was different, bread-like and soft than crispy, not in an under-cooked way too. In a way, this becomes an 'disadvantage' - when you've had their crispy wings, this'd draw an underwhelming comparison. I still enjoy it, but you get what I mean. I believe this flavour/batter could stand out more if it was e.g, spareribs, etc without directly competing with the signature wings. Although drinks are not included in the meal, the price is super reasonable here. You can get pretty full easily. There are more than just mix-and-match noodles here. Plenty of attractive selections such as rice bowls and variety of snacks. I'd definitely try these items next time. Overall I like their food, and appreciate their flavour. The decoration on the wall was neat, showcasing all the 'cart noodle' or hong kong cafe items' names. Small cozy place that gives you that quick and simple ambiance. It'd be crowded on rush hour but otherwise you feel cosy. Service is great, very attentive and quick to order. Location is good, parking may be a challenge especially on the weekend due to the crowd.

There's so many of these customizable noodle places nowadays but I think Block 18 is my favorite thus far. The noodles are nothing special special but the broth is fantastic along with the sauces that come with it. I loved the beef brisket and the other toppings were pretty good too. We also shared a side of the fried chicken, which was well seasoned and perfectly fried. Service was definitely a step above as well, we'll definitely be back again.

Place forAsian Hong-Kong style cart noodle, you can customize your own bowl with choice of soup broth and toppings, and also has AMAZING selection of side dishes too! My faovourite is the deep fried chicken nuggets~ the only thing was that I just wish that the noodle wasn't served in a plastic bowl.

Sarah A.

Nice and cozy place to have a yummy meal! Delicious side dishes- cuttlefish balls, chicken leg, quail egg, etc! As for the cart noodles, plenty of toppings to choose from on the menu. Soup is amazing, made from chicken and pork bones. No MSG!

She wanted to go to Kirin. Plenty of parking in the mall. Hostess greeted and seated us promptly. Restaurant was busy but not crazy. This was at 10am on a Thursday. Waiters were attentive. Usual table service was in place. Took our order and food came out at acceptable pace. When we were done, they politely boxed up the leftovers and we paid our bill. So service was on point. The food we ordered came out hot. The staples that I order to test was hargow, suimai and pai gwut(spareribs). All 3 dishes in general were good.....the hargow could have used an extra minute or 2 in the steamer. The suimai was very good. I tasted every ingredient in this dish. Usually it is just a complete mix and you can't discern the different flavors. They tried something different with the cheongfun by adding pieces of Chinese donut to the roll. I personally think it didn't add much to the dish, taste or texture wise. I did like the pea shoots with shrimp. I think it is a good combo. All in all a good dimsum. I also noticed they did not charge us a tea service. The cost of the food is comparable with other restaurants at this level. On a typical Sunday evening, the restaurant is usually fully occupied, but my friend had thoughtfully made a reservation a week in advance, so our table for five was ready upon arrival. As always, the restaurant was clean and well maintained, with good airflow thanks to the wide-open front entrance facing the parkade. The front desk receptionist greeted us cordially, and we were escorted to a cozy table in a comfortable location -- not too close to the washrooms, which I appreciated. Our meal began with the Kirin Special Assorted Cold Appetizer, followed by Crab Meat, Dried Scallops, and Fish Maw Soup. The soup arrived piping hot and was delicious, with a generous portion that could easily have served eight people. We also enjoyed Pea Tips Braised with Bean Curd and Assorted Mushrooms in Consommé, Marinated Free-Range Crispy Skin Chicken, Fillet of Cod Sautéed with Seasonal Vegetables, and Live Crab in Consommé with Ginger and Green Onion, served with E-fu Noodles. Overall, the quality and taste of every entrée were excellent. Service was top-notch -- tea and hot water were refilled constantly, bones and used plates were replaced promptly, and the servers were friendly and engaging throughout the evening. My friend and his family have apparently been regulars at this location for over two decades, which likely contributed to the exceptional attentiveness we received. However, one aspect of the experience genuinely disturbed me. All servers, including the captains, continued to wear masks at all times. While this practice was understandable two years ago, now -- five years after the onset of the pandemic, with COVID-19 managed similarly to other seasonal respiratory illnesses -- the continued universal masking in a fine-dining environment feels unnecessary and detracts from the overall guest experience. Fine dining, in my view as an avid foodie, is built on human connection, hospitality, and personal interaction. Masks create a more impersonal, almost clinical atmosphere. In a well-ventilated space like this, the environmental risk does not seem to justify the visual and social trade-off. Rather than providing reassurance, the persistent masking may unintentionally signal that the environment is unsafe or that management is out of step with current provincial health guidelines, where masking is now a personal choice rather than a mandate. Final verdict: Food & Service: 5/5 Ambience: 2/5 Overall: 3/5 -- as the current aesthetic feels more like a relic of 2020 than a leader in 2026 hospitality.

We made a reservation on OpenTable (which is a rare platform to use among Chinese restaurants in Greater Vancouver). We were seated a few minutes after arrival. The space feels energetic. It's a more modern restaurant, so there is much color and younger vibrancy than a traditional Chinese restaurant. What else is different? No round tables - only smaller square tables - which means it's better designed for small groups rather than large groups. We ended up trying a number of items: - Beef Belly Skewers: Very good. Everyone loved them. I wished we had ordered more. - Chicken Skewers: Ok. I think asked for something but they ran out and gave us gizzards and hearts, which are never good because they become mealy and not enjoyable to eat. - Dungeness Crab with Salty Egg Yolk: Good. Prepared as well as lots of restaurants. They provide disposable gloves to eat with, but nothing to crack the shells. - Stir Fried Vegetables: Good. No complaints. - Fresh Fish with Tofu Hot Pot: Very good. - Fresh Fish Steamed: Very good. - Lobster with Sticky Rice: Very good. Service is really very good. Genuinely more friendly and talkative than I'm accustomed too, but I appreciated. Overall, a good meal. It was different in that the decor and service is what really stood out, and that's the difference maker compared to most other Chinese restaurants with the same quality of food. The braised combo is pretty solid - I didn't really like the funkiness to the intestines (I generally enjoyed it in barbecue settings) but the fish cake was fantastic. I also liked the texture of the pork ears. The Taiwanese egg wrap was a bit tasteless, so I wouldn't recommend. Braised pork sauce rice is the lu ruo fan which is a large portion with seaweed, bean sprouts, and soup on the side. Pork chop was flavorful and juicy but not crispy batter, which is okay.
